smileydogg24 of course not. The point is to stress it until it fails to discover the actual limits of the blade for a comparison to an authentic blade.
smileydogg24 exactly that’s why we are here to watch him do it for us. By the way thank you buddy, I appreciate you subjecting your gear to these tests for science
I dunno... It looks like to me that unless you plan on doing something really stupid with your knife, a $30 clone will do anything you can reasonably expect a knife to do... and for a ton less money. It also looks like the clone makers could spend about $10 more on heat treating the lock parts and still produce a knife that keeps up with Microtech in this kind of test, again for hundreds less. ( Which points to Microtech and others overcharging for what you actually get. ) But then maybe I'm crazy for expecting a knife to be just that, and not a wood chisel or a nail. * shrug*

That cheap steal will really show after a couple hundred thousand clicks. My ultratech has been abused daily working in construction and its battered and beat but fires everytime
@@guarddog318 yeah they do overcharge, benchmade and spyderco overcharge as well, but with my spyderco knives, I know I have quality steel with a good heat treat that noticeably outperforms cheap knives, and they pay their workers a living wage. I'm willing to pay their prices to support them and keep them in business. Yes, I could get by just fine on a cheap clone, but I like quality, and I like supporting American businesses that treat their workers well.
I bought an Atomic Defender, a Titan, and a Lightning Elite for under $100 total. I've carried and used all of them for 1+ year as EDCs for work, in which I use them for opening tons of boxes and mail. I also fidget with them constantly. They have all had thousands of deployments and retractions, and they all still work just as well now as when I bought them. I will never buy another Microtech. They are simply a waste of money for ego and brand. I understand the FEELING and EMOTION of exclusive tribalism when you buy a super overpriced name brand thing like a Microtech, but I also have enough experience to understand that spending 5x the amount on a name brand buys you nothing except that name brand and the bragging rights for having spent a lot of money on it. Want a D/A OTF that functions fine for years with a lot of daily use? You're gonna be perfectly satisfied with a "budget" option like Lightning, Titan, Atomic, or AKC.
Actually any flee market that as people selling knives got em under the counter everywhere in Canada , quebec Montreal etc..if you ask discretly and calmly , the person will show you his under the counter goodies like otf's , butterfly knives, brass knuckles , tazers , chinese stars and if your lucky one or two revolvers 😁 eh eh eh
@BrutalJuice I just got my Vespa wasp from dhgate it's a Microtech Troodon clone it was $160 and the Precision Machining and everything about the knife is beautiful you won't be disappointed and yes you will receive in the mail no questions asked
I have owned a real Microtech Halo V for 6 years now. I thought what the hell, let's buy a knock off and compare the two. I paid $100 for the knockoff. It came in a real Microtech box with real Microtech paperwork. I was blown away by the quality of this particular brand knockoff. EVERYTHING was spot on, the fit and finish, the hardware, and the action. When deployed the blade has virtually no play in it, don't know what steel the blade is made of but it took an edge, and has held it. My guess is like an Aus 8 or something similar. When you go to retract the blade, the slide has all the info on it that the original does. I was so impressed that I keep my REAL Halo V in the gun safe and play with the knockoff. It was such a faithful copy that I have even fooled other Microtech owners with it. So not all knockoffs are created equal. I think it was a Vespa.
Bc they are not knockoffs...all the shit is made in China..so the "knockoffs" are not knockoffs at all..u just getting it at a cheaper price due to where u buy from..wish has knifes that are exactly the same..300 here under 100 from wish..n halg the shit made in usa is a lie anyway..its ridiculous..all for a selling point..but yea its not a knockoff mate..same same
The one I just ordered yesterday from here: www.dhgate.com/product/red-blue-orange-handle-mt-automatic-knife/480677414.html?f=edm|auto|auto_shipping_2017|browse1|20200422 says that it's D2 blade steel. I'm kinda doubting that but I'll see when it gets here. If it's hard to sharpen then you know. I'm basically buying this as a toy. Are people(soldiers) really taking these to war? I doubt it. More likely a fixed blade of some kind. I saw the Vespas on this site but I know nothing about them.
You just proved that if you buy that knock off knife its actually well worth the money, because in reality that test is not something you do to a knife of that type.
In my hometown we have a knife maker that was a contestant of “Forged in Fire” reality show on History Channel. He sales his knives at a extremely reasonable price. Reason: he doesn’t feel that there is no reason anyone should sale a knife at a high price considering the material at hand and readily available in today’s market. He’s older and honest along with the best blacksmith I know. He has knives priced a a premium only when very specific to a buyer. Good man with good intentions
@@mattmorrison9379 One's about $50, the other over $300. There's a 600% difference in price, and the cheap one performs nearly as well as the expensive one. It "failed" when induced to stress no reasonable person would be subjecting their knife to (hammering it through a 2x4). If the cheapo would spend a few bucks more on better raw steel, it probably would have passed that test too.
@@heathwasson7811 fair enough, personally I like having a real one it definitely feels better than some clones I've held but hey to each their own it's all good.:)
It's amazing the amount of money you can save on production when you steal someone else's R&D, use cheaper materials, skimp on QC, don't offer a warranty, and probably don't pay your employees a fair wage.
@@blc628 Yeah, no shit. Everyone's fully aware of that. Like we don't know the reason one can sell for $50 and the other for $300? Glad you came around to straighten everyone out on that. Feel good about yourself now that you had the chance to dazzle everyone with your stunning economical analysis?
I am a poor college student and I live in Europe where everything you get from USA is pretty much double the price you pay there. But since i am a knife maker and collector I appreciate the design and quality of the original. And I want to support the one who bust his head to come up with this design. So I only ate pasta with tomato sauce for 4 months in order to collect the money and in 2014 I bought my first real microtech. To this day 6 years later I have not regret it one bit. I know that the counterfeit if very good for the money but they don't have to spend money for research, for quality parts and American labour. I make knives I would want anyone to copy my designs for less $. In order for me to come up with one knife I have to break 2- 3 complete knives to test if the design is good enough. The copycats will just skip all this. Anyway I think that counterfeiting is just unacceptable wrong. The only way microtech can defeat them is to make a cheaper line in the company that are made in China. Like Byrd knives from Spyderco!
You are spot-on, Counterfeiting is despicable to me! The world would be a truly amazing place if it was full of people like you! Where do I buy one of your knifes?

I have a few microtechs that were gifted to me when I left my Special Forces team and when I retired from the Army. They are beautiful works of art. With the custom engraving, they are more sentimental and collector items for me than anything else. I wouldn't mind carrying a knockoff as long as it was NOT branded as the real thing. I typically don't spend more than $50 on my EDC knife. It gets used and abused and occasionally lost. My wife got me an unbranded OTF once. It was cheap and unstoppable. The only negative thing I have to say about it was the pocket clip and glass breaker broke off. I don't carry it anymore because of that so now it permanently lives in my center console of my truck. My recommendation would be to find one of these knockoff microtechs that are unbranded or to pick up a good affordable folder. Personally I prefer an Axis or liner locking mechanism, but that's personal preference. I want to be clear, I'm not promoting foreign businesses over US businesses (especially local knife makers and gunsmiths if you have them), but at the end of the day, this shit still has to be affordable, and a good knife, regardless of brand, is better than no knife.
Thank you for your service. I appreciate that you understand that knock-offs sometimes have their place. I’m a broke college kid and can’t afford to be carrying a 250+ knife. if an unbranded knockoff is what i can afford and it’s reliable then so be it.
I got sucked in on the knife buying from watching Nutnfancy videos and since then the market has just shot upwards with apparently no end in sight. I find it ridiculous too. You can buy several guns or even a used car for what some of these high-end knives are going for now. I have like 35 now, but only a few were more than $50. After retiring I have little use for them now.
Love these videos. Have to realize that this is a biased test though with your connection with microtech. Unbiased reviews and tests have more credibility.
@@XRING Its doesn't break anything on the counterfeit knife but it sure as shit guaranteed you didn't perform the full spectrum of tests on the microtech that you did on the fake. Microtechs are cool and kinda fancy and everybody gets the whole gimmick but you could've done a fair test. You didn't. Pretty simple.
Real microtech knives are well worth the money. I bought a knock off just to scratch the itch of wanting one and was immediately disappointed with the quality and reliability. I dug down deep in my pocket and bought the utx 85. When I received the knife I was worried I was going to regret spending that much money on a pocket knife. It was hard to see the value until I had it in my hand. I work in machining so I can appreciate the value of a real microtech. My utx and I have been inseparable since I bought it. I have actually had five people go out and buy one as a gift for someone after handling mine. I recommend them to people all the time. They are truly amazing knives and a must have for any one who is into hunting, EDC, and or collecting. Hell I've seen people who don't care for any of those things end up wanting one after handling mine. I am in no way affiliated with microtech or anyone for that matter. Save up and get the real thing. You won't regret it. Most people I see on TH-cam have five or six decent quality knock offs. At fifty dollars or more a pop that is more than enough money to go out and get a full size ultratech. Another thing people forget about when scoffing at the price of a microtech is that when you buy the knife it is basically a piggy bank. You barely lose any money if you decide to sell one and if you get a rare color, blade, and hardware combination you can actually gain money in the long run. Buying a microtech is a good as buying any high end fire arm. It holds it's value and is worth being seen as an investment rather than a spontaneous purchase. Anyhow, I'm done. ✌️
I've had one of those hellhound clones from DHgate for 4 years now. I've never tried to nail it into a board but I've been rough with it and it's still going strong. All the ones I've seen advertised say it's D2 steel and that's what it feels like, it's better than those 3cr13 Tacforce knives. As long as you know going into it you're basically buying a $40 knife and not to expect $400 worth of quality it's all good.
I’ve been carrying the same Ultratch since 2012 and have never had a problem that a basic air blowout and oiling couldn’t fix. I’ve even had it submerged for a day while rafting and it’s still working strong.
People say that to me all the time! They also have 20 pairs of $100+ shoes, $900 cellphones, and credit card debt...Fun part about being an adult is spending money on shit YOU like :D
No clue what steel they use in them but I've seen friends clones that are spot on and some even better feeling and looking than some of my older factory knives lol
Your point has been proved, thank you for clearing up that i can save 140$ and get a knockoff just as long as i dont carelessly nail it into a piece of wood for no reason :)
Yeah until one day when you're about to get mugged you pull it out of your pocket and a cheap piece of crap spring inside doesn't let the blade come out and your left holding a small rectangular piece of steel😂😂
Your exactly right! But they will tell you that 20 more dollars in the machine is going to hit the big one, I worked in a store for 7 years that sold lotto tickets, The House Always Wins
They will knock off anything! 🙄 I got to put my hands on some custom Microtech knives today made by the owner polished blades & all. 😍 Thanks for Sharing, Carry On
I have one of those $30.00 Lightning out the front knives and I have ruthlessly cut string and opened boxes with it and it hasn’t failed yet. Incredible!! I even dropped it one time. 😆
I lost my job a few years ago, so I did what any reasonable person would do. I went and bought my first Microtech Ultratech. I didn’t fear finding work and buying the knife for myself cemented the fact from my mind into reality. Found a new better paying job before my knife even arrived. I wouldn’t sell the knife for anything. I love that Ultratech.
I know this video is old and a lot of the comments are praising the knockoff. Not me. I've never been a fan of otf knives until recently i just got into them, and i have a genuine Ultratech, but you sold me on Microtech brother. Great video.
A little homework about Elmax steel: It is a tougher steel with high carbon content that hardens to Rockwell 61-62. It is also a powdered steel...meaning Elmax steel powder is compressed into ingots - or blade shapes, then heated to form the final part. Interestingly, in other areas of the consumer market, POWDERED steels are considered total crap! Many in the gun world never grow tired of dissing powdered metals as being "cheap" and "weak" and subject to breakage compared to good old forged and machined steel! Interesting indeed! Sure, eventually, all steel items will be formed from a powdered alloy because this is easier to create parts in the final shape and near dimension, and of course in 3D additive manufacturing, though even now that process is far too expensive for common knife making.
Thanks for these videos. I was a bit nervous about plucking down ~350 for one of these. I didn't know if they were legit good quality knives or just hype. I bought my first Microtech because of these videos!
Pretty impressive comparison! Interesting that it wasn't the blade lock that failed, it was the handle which I'm guessing is a Zinc alloy which would tend to deform under the hammer blows. 6061 Aluminum isn't the strongest alloy, I would expect that MT would be using 7075 which is much closer to mild steel in tensile strength, but then, that's not how the handle material failed, it failed in compression, though not really "failed" so much as deformed just enough to stall the blade. Most likely the knife could be put back into service by truing up the blade slot, and at least having a light-to-medium duty cutter. Gotta admit the MT UT was impressive!
Tbf it costs 33$ for a fake on alibaba and who needs to nail a knife into a 2x4.... ok its disposable and not as good as a real one but 33$... microtech is too expensive
I do understand that the real thing is going to be better but it is more than 10 x the price it’s crazy ! You can almost get a sebensa for that money (which is also expensive imo)
@@jameslordan3378 yeah that's why I don't own yet.. u do own a few benchmades and they are equally expensive but I love em to death. The real one also has the registered trademark or copyright under the Microtech name on the clip and the under the crest on the front handle. The fake had no such marks
I ordered two knives off dh gate. The benchmade 9400 came in two weeks and is fantastic. The fakerotec halo vi is still in the mail and it hasn't updated shipping in over a month. @@darkanglesnip3r I bought a Halo 6 clone off of dhgate and brought it to one of my local Microtech dealers (Note I said dealer. Microtech is so proud of their shit is so expensive it has to be financed) (I'm all for quality and made in America but seriously Microtech. And they aren't the only ones) today. When I showed him the knife he could barely tell the difference between the two. It was only after he called Microtech to ask about serial number and ways to identify a fake. The fake Halo VI actually deploys more harder and smoother. Granted the steel and a few other things didn’t hold up over time but what average Joe uses an OTF that damn much. We all know that most of us have one for showing off and shit like that. If you want a hard heavy use folding knife then buy a frame, liner, or lock back like the rest of us do. Even those systems fail from shit like this. (Not everyone designs or tests their shit like Lynn Thompson) (No I do not work for Cold Steel. I prefer Kershaw and Boker, and Sypderco knives for EDC) First responders and Real world text all operators that use this on a daily basis or when their lives depend on it should go for it and buy the real deal. @@MrMZaccone Yeah in the moment you take apart of Microtech you void your warranty so what's your point? I have my car tax I have old vintage rare ones I have a 85's and 70"s. I think the point that he was trying to make is with the knockoffs I can buy five of them for what I'm going to pay for one Microtech. And let's be honest I've never used the knife warranty in 42 years of carrying a knife. You don't this stupid crap with your knife you never need the warranty.
Thanks for showing us the high quality of the counterfeits. Why should I spend the ridiculous amount of money they are asking for the real thing when I can get the knockoff that is "good enough" to do the job for the fraction of the cost?
The Vespa OTF's steal largely from Microtec designs, but they don't market them AS Microtecs... They put them over their own label and they do make some aesthetic changes to them. Their knifes however, ARE legit premium steels... Their lower level $80 knives are D2, but the $130-$230 knives are M390, etc... Several buyers have sent theirs off to a metalergy firm for testing and got the test results back and they were legit.
Ders972 that’s your contribution to the discussion? To point out that I didn’t proof read my grammar? One might think that you went that route, because you had no other response to give? Lol. Thank you for policing the internet to make sure that everything is spelled correctly. Not all heroes wear capes.
The point people make about Microtech is that they claim the knife costs $10 to make (wrong) and they should sell them for $40. Now a China based company is making their own OTF knife but feel they need to charge $230 for it. Shouldn't they be able to make a quality OTF for $40? No one doubts that China CAN make a quality knife, but they are not making quality counterfeit knives for $40. Also, when it comes to counterfeits, it isn't in that company's best interest to make a knife that lasts, they rely on repeat business and know if you will buy one $40 knife you'll buy another when that one breaks... and another... and another. Eventually you'll have $300+ of broken counterfeits when you decide to buy one $280 Microtech and you'll finally find happiness.
@Kevin Exactly. Now, when at work, I make the extra effort to correct simple grammar or typos... but in the world of mobile and spotty autocorrect, I don't always catch it.
One of these days I'm going to get one of those Microtech's. It's going to have to wait a bit, I get to go back to work on Monday. Surgeon wanted me out for 6wks but my loving employer didn't put my leave in. No paycheck sucks!
That was the best blade video I have seen in quite some time. You are just cool.. not much else to add to that. I am subbed! and by the way that baby blue handled Ultratech look absolutely amazing. I'm going to watch some more I don't know much about guns but seems I'll be learning about them too here.
when is this man gonna test a different high dollar otf, I would love to see him put a guardian tactical otf to the test as those look far more beefy than the microtech lineup but only an intense test will prove it
Fascinating, thx! Couple months ago picked up a small chinese-made knockoff OTF for sumthin' like only 10-15 bucks on Amazon. And while I wouldn't take it 'camping', so far it's actually been pretty handy and reliable as an EDC clipped to my jeans, for doing simple stuff like piercing and slicing thru cardboard, opening packages, cutting cord, etc.. So from the looks of it, many of the cheapo mass-produced knives are starting to 'catch up', and occasionally some of 'em can even be an excellent value.
I would of loved to see if the blade and the parts from the clone would work in the real microtech, also tbh if they dropped the logo's on the knife they're making and just sold them as is it actually wouldn't be a horrible edc knife for a more budget minded person because for the $40-$60 price point it would actually be a really sweet knife for the money.
I think you just sold me on the clone. 🤷♂️ I mean I’m never gonna do any of the test you just did. And It looks like it can take a beating. And for 40$ what am I really losing. If microtech was cheaper of course I’d go that route but at 10% the cost how can you go wrong.
I have a utx clone from DHgate was 38. The quality is amazing. Fit and finish is amazing. Action is fast and solid. And blade took a shaving polished edge on my work sharp. Iv been beating on it and using it for everything and its held up great.
Not that I condone buying clones but those Microtechs are way overpriced for what they are. It would be a cool knife at $125. Costs them prob $20 to make it.
They cost WAY more than that to make. I did the series on birth of an Ultratech on the channel. Really made me understand what all goes into them. Not justifying the price, just stating the facts. Thanks for watching.
I've been tempted a few times to buy a Ultratech. I have a Cobratech, higher end with the Aluminum handles, and D2 blade. I paid about 130 dollars for it about 3 years and have never had an issue...Now, I was thinking of buying a Ultratech, and the one I was looking at is 290.00...The Kicker is, even though it's 290 bucks, the website says, "we can't tel you what Steel the blade is made of, as we change all the time".......If I'm paying 300 bucks for a knife, I'm damn sure going to know what "steel of the Month" I'm getting......
I looked at one at the last gun show I went to but I didn’t know enough to tell if it was a fake. I’m more informed now if I see another one. I started to trade a shotgun for it but I’m glad i didn’t. 👍
Here is some good news. I am doing a 2 part series on how to spot a Microtech fake. Look for it to drop next week on the Microtech Knives TH-cam channel.
Love these reviews, hope to have one some day, man it looks like all the channels I like are going to patreon and now I have a hard decision to make because I can’t afford all three of you guys, but it is totally understandable and I will support one or maybe two of y’all, man ( scratching my head)
Not going to lie when I saw all that it could do I actually thought it was pretty sweet for the money and tbh for what most people would do with an otf knife it would be a much cooler and fun knife then something like a Lightning otf would be and around the same price.
and nowadays they are even starting to use m390 steel for the blades because we had a couple tested. and I guess if your just using it to cut open some boxes or just clean your finger nails it would be just fine and I do wish more of the microtech knives were more affordable but they are extremely well made and can withstand more of a beating than any of us customers are ever going to purposely put it through so in the end microtech for the win for sure
Wow, I am stunned by the lack of ethics in many of these comments. Some are saying things like, "Wow X-Ring, you showed me how great a clone is! I'm going to go get one." First of all, X-ring did not demonstrate what happens to cheap steel when testing it as he did. AUS-8 (which is probably what these knock-offs use) can do all of the stuff X-Ring did, but will roll and possibly even chip. Bohler M390 (which is what many Microtech blades are made of) will also withstand those tests AND keep their edge without damage. But, on top of all that, even if these knock-offs can do what you need them to do, you are supporting criminal enterprises when you buy them! If they were simply crappy 30.00 look-alikes, it would be one thing, but these clowns are counterfeiting the Microtech logo and branding. They are pirates, period. Supporting their deception is unethical at best, if not downright immoral. Look, if you can't afford a Microtech, that's OK. They are expensive. So, go get a Lightning OTF instead. It'll only cost you 30.00 and you didn't sell out. Lightnings are from an honest company who doesn't pretend to be something they are not. One day, when you can afford the real thing, it's be a much sweeter experience.
You are 100% correct James and I appreciate your comment on this. Seems like cost is the only deciding factor and nothing else matters to a few people.
@@XRING Thank you sir. BTW, I just watched the video where you burned and abused your Combat Troodon. I found it because I just purchased one and wanted to see some reviews. Wow, I was impressed. I know that to some they may see your torture tests as extreme but I, for one, want to see just how far I could push my tools without actually having to. I appreciate your work! Keep it up.
I think is its far worse that there companies try to screw us by selling knives at a 900% mark up, if Chinese knockoffs are good enough to compete and at 1/10 of the cost then it is obvious who is getting screwed
that counterfeit did pretty good considering no normal person would go so extreme on their pocket knife. for 30$-40$ its not bad at all. it just shows how much some companies overcharge for their products...
The Microtech is not overcharging at all. The parts are made in the US instead of using chinese labor. They have to pay their workers a lot more than the chinese do, since our SOL is a lot higher.
@@notgray88 sure, labor costs are much higher than in China. However most of the work is automated and done on assembly lines. That is why it's hard for me to justify price of $764.26 for Microtech Troodon Tanto. Most of Microtech knives cost way too much, e.g. Microtech Ultratech OTF D/E Automatic Knife. Price: $935.00 or Microtech Combat Troodon Knife Price $1,150.00 I'm not even gonna mention Microtech Marfione Line where one knife can cost you $2,500.00. I know that most of Microtech knives cost in the range of $300-$500 but Kershaw knives average price is around $50 up to $100. Kershaw knives are made in Oregon. It is just my opinion, that Microtech is charging little too much for their products and I can see why some might want counterfeit instead.
I think the clone held up very well and wouldn't class it as junk. It's a fraction of the price and would last most people along time under normal use. I'm no knife expert but I'm sure it's not meant to be used as a nail.
It's "junk" in 2 senses. First in a political sense. Not authentic, not USA made, etc etc. Second in a life or limb sense, you can't depend on it, if you might need the OTF to save...or take...a life. I don't so I bought a clone. I occasionally cut mail with it. But it's barely a step up from being a toy to me. If I was a rescue worker or spec ops and this was my edc, I'd spring for the real thing.
I had a lightning OTF for three years never abused it and then it started to fail I wanted something better I love my knife but I didn't want to spend a lot of money for a high-quality Microtech so I bought a Vespa wasp combat Troodon clone and I am very impressed in the Precision quality for $160 you can't go wrong
Thats a real testament, to show quality of Mircotech !! Although I think the test was to hard for that particular type blade & mechanism. Nevertheless it did prove a major difference.
Ah yes, that 380$ extra for the actual microtec so that I can drive it through a 2×4 is completely worth it. Granted yes, if it is blatantly ripping the company off with branding, no thanks. However if it's just the design I'll gladly pay the 20$ for the "cheap crap" that is nearly on par for less than 1/10th the price.
I want to comment that the failure was not in the locking mechanism. It was in the body that bent which prevented the blade from sliding in. Not the small rectangle lock. The bent frame looked like it was caused by an off side striking blow, or could have just been weaker aluminum. I am not knocking microtech just my observation. What do you think?
The clone will still sell and it's all down to price and affordability for most, also you have done a strength test for people to see and that clone took a hell of a beating before it broke and no one would ever use this knife in the way you demonstrated it, it's a combat fighting knife not a servival cutting threw longs knife or smashing it threw 2inch thick wood knife, if anything this has probably upped the sales on the clone because most people will use it for normal tasks not cutting down trees. My advice for microtech is to contact a good knife company in China and bring out a few designs that's an affordable prices for people that can't afford the high priced American made ones.
The handle bent just enough like a guy slightly tweak bends a driveshaft yoke hammering out the universal joint and then it doesn’t work . Good materials and a good build is paramount .
Based on your recommendation, I got a Microtech Ultratech clone made by HiFinder. It's amazing; has better tolerances than the real thing and D2 is plenty good enough for me. These clones are just amazing
Something about microtech i couldnt get over is if you were holding a knockoff and the real deal in hand you cant really tell the difference unless you look at the small visual things harder to copy which isnt a good thing especially at micro tech price points. I hope the knock off also didnt need a propitiatory tool that cost almost 70 bucks lol.
Hmmm, I should probably email Microtech my question, but I'm on youtube thinking about this right now: AN unused 2015 Troodon.. how long will the spings hold up and act as new? If I purchase a new unused older Troodon, can I have the spring replaced if it is weak or fails? Does the lifetime warranty transfer to 2nd end users?? I enjoy watching these videos, thanks!
Got my first microtech today and was watching this video with dread until you were pointing out the fake give-aways and noting that mine didn't have any red flags. WHEW! Still not gonna hammer it into a board though. What's surprising me the most is when you took it apart the sheer simplicity of the design. I been thinking there was a ton of moving parts in there but it's honestly not a whole lot and it looks like worrying about pocket-link affecting it's function is not a real worry because it can be easily maintenanced due to the simplicity of the internal design.
I could buy 5 of the fake ones and replace them if they ever break and it would still be cheaper then buying 1 real one, I think I also would feel better hammering on a cheap one then a $300-500 one
Sure you can buy a clone otf knife that's identical, reasonably well-built, dependable and a fraction of the price of the original but the jokes on you because it's not a REAL Microtech! Ha!
I bought some knock offs on purpose before I bought my real microtechs back in the day. The main difference I found was the steel was much softer. Didn’t hold its edge. And the springs often broke in under a year. They are definitely not at even close to the quality of a real microtech
Microtech is awesome!! I have owned numerous microtech knives. Super, super sharp!! My best butterfly knife is a limited edition microtech. Totally recommend microtech knives. Sad to see these copies though. They did that to some chris reeves folders too. Watch out for the counterfeits! Nice knives man!!
I would still love to see a torture test of a vespa troodon knockoff.. those are on another level than the other crappy China knockoffs. Not all knives sold on aliexpress are created equal and I welcome the competition because that’s what will drive microtech to innovate further...
I have gotten some of the best knives I have seen in the $100-250 range on AliExpress and DHgate. Sure they are clones, but amazing knives. Got two Microtech Sigil clones that are just amazing. Got a Shirogorov RFT that is the sharpest I have ever seen a knife straight out of the box. Got a Shirogorov 110KS that is just a marvel of machining quality and smoothness. Got a Fischer Battle in damascus that blew my mind. There have been bad ones also, but fewer than the successes. I think the worst was a ZT 0777 where it is impossible to center the blade properly and still have it flip reliably and a CKF Decepticon with a detent so lose that the knife might open in your pocket.
With quality like that it's hard not to go with a clone.. I have a UltraTech and rarely carry it because it's just too expensive.. It would be a whole lot better if the clone was just marketed as their own brand..
Me: Hey I just bought a ultratech
Friend: Is it real?
Me: Dunno, let me get get a hammer and 2x4.
After the hammer & 2x4 with d Microtech….
Me: SOLD!!! I’m getting the clone. 😂
Was….. was it real?
I would never do any of those things with a otf knife!
smileydogg24 of course not. The point is to stress it until it fails to discover the actual limits of the blade for a comparison to an authentic blade.
smileydogg24 exactly that’s why we are here to watch him do it for us. By the way thank you buddy, I appreciate you subjecting your gear to these tests for science
Wouldn't do any of those things to any pocket knife that wasn't a fixed blade
That's what the word TORTURE means.
Lol nope !
Damn, that clone is a tuff SOB for $30, I figured it wouldn't take one wack on that nail test! Thanks for the display!
( Which points to Microtech and others overcharging for what you actually get. )
But then maybe I'm crazy for expecting a knife to be just that, and not a wood chisel or a nail. * shrug*

No this will only cheaper their brand.

True, I now work for Microtech as of January. How does that break the internal lock on the counterfeit knife. 🤷♂️
Some of his tests were before he even worked there. Biased or not it doesnt take a genius to see the chinesium specials are nowhere close in quality
Solidus Lives You need to watch the full tests I did on all of the Microtechs.
Then maybe some of those knives manufacturers need to adjust there price point 400 for a pocket knife is absolutely crazy!!

I would not be able to hammer my 230 dollar knife through anything without crying.

I prefer Kershaw and Boker, and Sypderco knives for EDC) First responders and Real world text all operators that use this on a daily basis or when their lives depend on it should go for it and buy the real deal.
Still waiting for a Zero Tolerance OTF to come out. I bet it will put everyone else’s to shame.
What this video showed me is that I can own a "microtech" cheap that will do everything I want it to do.
I have a utx85 clone/fake from DHgate the quality is absolutely top notch. The steel took a shaving sharp polished edge too.
@@YoungMulahBB No warranty though. Too bad.
Just not everything you might "need" it to.
For 6x the price, the Microtech probably isn't worth it, for most people
Cool to see the internals of the clone and see the differences in manufacturing.
If you are a knife guy it might help you to know the plural is knives
Well, five minutes in and you’ve done nothing but a glowing review of a clone❤
One of these days I'm going to get one of those Microtech's. It's going to have to wait a bit, I get to go back to work on Monday. Surgeon wanted me out for 6wks but my loving employer didn't put my leave in. No paycheck sucks!
I just got my first one, and I can tell you, it is absolutely astounding. You'll never regret it my friend.
Best way to spent your hard earn money.
I would of loved to see if the blade and the parts from the clone would work in the real microtech, also tbh if they dropped the logo's on the knife they're making and just sold them as is it actually wouldn't be a horrible edc knife for a more budget minded person because for the $40-$60 price point it would actually be a really sweet knife for the money.
the same material
Thanks for the knowledge about counterfeit Microtech knives , X-Ring !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you just sold me on the clone. 🤷♂️ I mean I’m never gonna do any of the test you just did. And It looks like it can take a beating. And for 40$ what am I really losing. If microtech was cheaper of course I’d go that route but at 10% the cost how can you go wrong.
I predict you will be wasting a lot of your money re-buying things. Better to save up and buy once.
I have a utx clone from DHgate was 38. The quality is amazing. Fit and finish is amazing. Action is fast and solid. And blade took a shaving polished edge on my work sharp. Iv been beating on it and using it for everything and its held up great.
Only downside is no warrantee but there easy to strip down and work on if needed
Thanks and it’s all good Hoot. I will continue releasing videos on this channel as well.
I met this guy that talked me into getting one and I never looked back
Bald&curious Shady character wasn’t he? 😄
I love the little speed ups you do,
I'm going to buy another clone because you are an amazing salesman! Thank you!
Can you post a link to where to buy the clone?
that counterfeit did pretty good considering no normal person would go so extreme on their pocket knife. for 30$-40$ its not bad at all. it just shows how much some companies overcharge for their products...
Price: $935.00
or Microtech Combat Troodon Knife Price $1,150.00
I'm not even gonna mention Microtech Marfione Line where one knife can cost you $2,500.00.
If I was a rescue worker or spec ops and this was my edc, I'd spring for the real thing.
i have a lighting otf im saving up to get a Microtech thats my dream knife
Love microtech. Tony doesn’t play. Built to outlast
‘Just doing a nail test’
Because everyone hammers their knives into a 2x4, amirite?
That Chicom knockoff lasted longer than my UTX85. I had to spend $22 to ship it back to Microtech.
I COULDN'T IMAGINE DOING THAT TO MY HALO VI!!!!!
Keep telling yourself that.
I have a hifinder too the clone is far away better for the money my friend.
Hey you can send me that fake Microtech, I think it would make a really cool Sinker for fishing on the bottom where it belongs
Hey 510th. The warranty is transferable for the knife. I’m sure of it .
@@XRING Thanks for your time! I think I will go for it then! 2015 urbancamo troodoon s/e!
That’s a nice one . Microtech will do a full service and sharpening if you call them and get a RA for it.
I open packages with my OTF, it’s not a survival knife. This comparison means nothing to me.
21maggot4life yeah, hard to look away from that car crash. 😂
I treat my Microtech knives with love and care......... Hate the copies
As always, great test! Keep them coming!
Thanx!
Why would you do that to an OTF? Amazing test, made me sick to watch.
biggest problem in this kind of situation, when you get knife is that its impossible to compare real vs fake .
I could buy 5 of the fake ones and replace them if they ever break and it would still be cheaper then buying 1 real one, I think I also would feel better hammering on a cheap one then a $300-500 one
Yep. I have two Microtechs now and they are quality.
They are definitely not at even close to the quality of a real microtech
did u get the hifinder clone
Microtech is awesome!! I have owned numerous microtech knives. Super, super sharp!! My best butterfly knife is a limited edition microtech. Totally recommend microtech knives. Sad to see these copies though. They did that to some chris reeves folders too. Watch out for the counterfeits! Nice knives man!!
Thanks Guitar Hiker and thank you for watching the channel.
Love these videos. I have a Combat Troodon and 2 Ultratechs👍🌴 These video’s helped me decide on all 3 of them.
You sold me, chinese knock off it is !! That thing is a beast !!
I would still love to see a torture test of a vespa troodon knockoff.. those are on another level than the other crappy China knockoffs. Not all knives sold on aliexpress are created equal and I welcome the competition because that’s what will drive microtech to innovate further...
You're totally right .
Great job. Now I can tell which is a real microtec and what isn’t
