    Thanks for doing these tests. I find the “safe queen” / “collectible” reviews to be worthless. I’ve carried a knife since I was about seven. As you said, they’re meant to be used. I’ve got a couple of OTF Microtech clones from the gun shows. I like the OTF because it’s one handed IN as well as out, but assumed they were too fragile to be a working knife. After seeing these I’m getting a real one. Kate

  • @randallscott-key802
    @randallscott-key802 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I got into OTF knives about 3 years ago. Started out buying cheap. Heard about Microtech, and "the price" to own one and immediately ridiculed it as a sucker buy! Then I watched some of these torture tests. I had already disassembled every one of my budget knives to see how well they were made, but without the real thing how could I tell? So I went against my better judgement (I thought) and bought a UTX85 distressed red D/E. The INSTANT I pulled that thing out of the plastic sleeve I knew it was on a level not even dreamed of by all the others - including some not so inexpensive brands. The quality was evident - fit perfect, finish perfect - well the distressed finish was "perfectly distressed" I guess! The blade was so crisply detailed, profile refined, razor sharp, and of course made of the highest quality steel - I read up on that too!
    So, I took it apart - I had to. It called to me to peek inside. Came apart easily and even the INSIDE is fully finished! The alloy chassis is perfectly executed with crisp, even, straight lines, but then came the best part...the very HEART of what makes a Microtech superior - the blade locks! If you haven't seen them with your own eyes you've missed the best part of owning a MT OTF! The locks themselves are 1.52mm thick with perfectly radiused opposing edges. The locks fit into precision cut recesses in the chassis that allows hinged movement only with no excess play, and here is where those radiused edges matter: At the "back" or hinge edge, the radius creates a perfect rotation. At the "front" or blade engagement edge, the radius swings down behind the upper edge of the blade shank - the shank being precisely angled to match the lock's swing arc, and when engaged, the radius causes all tip forces coming through the blade and into the lock, to cause the lock to "wedge" (for lack of a better term) INTO lock! Repeated hammering against the knife body cannot cause the lock to "bounce" out of engagement because of the perfectly designed, engineered, and executed geometry. I have not found this level of precision and clear understanding of the mission of a front blade lock on ANY other brand of OTF! Benchmade comes close with their twin-lock and 3-point lock-up, but the execution is simply not as precise.
    Even the size and style of screws attaching the top cover to the chassis is well thought out from an engineering standpoint...the screws have large flanges that apply tremendous clamping force between the handle-halves, making the knife body extremely strong. When I see other brand knives with their small flange screws located around the perimeter I am immediately reminding of how much weaker is their shell construction.
    $275-$300 for an Ultratech or UTX85 is a BARGAIN! They are so pretty, few want to use them for fear of damaging the pure looks, but they can take a beating, and undergo hard use and still function when other knives - even hinged blade knives will have snapped.
    I now own two UTX85s, an Ultratech, Troodon, Dirac Delta, with another Ultratech on the way, and a Combat Troodon on layaway! In contrast I only have two BM Infidels - the electric blue limited, and the olive green limited. I only have two Guardian Tactical - 035 and 040 - love them both and they're strong-built, but not VAULT-built! The GT 040 throws a massive 4+" blade.
    But for the money, MT knives are actually good buys.

    You should do a disassembly after all the torture test to see if there is any damage to the lock

    • @randallscott-key802
      @randallscott-key802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There won't be. For the lock to be damaged the entire chassis must be deformed which takes a lot! MT blade locks are perfection to behold and engineered for positive engagement under tip pressure - the harder you hammer, the more the front lock holds!
      Not saying you can't destroy a MT if you beat on it hard enough - FAR beyond even extreme duty use, but you will never destroy one without the aid of heavy hammers, and solid backing, or deliberately flexing the blade as hard as possible sideways.
      I'd trust my MT DA OTFs to stand up to abuse that would split the handle and warp the blade mount of many of my hinge bladed knives!

    All well and good, but just drop it in the sand one time and it won't be working until you disassemble and clean it. I was using mine to cut some leftover polyethylene silt fence that a construction crew left behind my house when I got a little dirt inside it. Totally jammed it up until I took it apart, cleaned and lubed it. I still love my Ultratech, however, and carry it every day.

    I have bought 2.....the first wad the "Fire Ant" Makora....great knife....but someone made me an offer for a trade that I ended up doing.....plus I had it for YEARS.
    Now I have a Ultratech....great knife. It is my everyday carry....just like the first one. Great knives.....durable. the only thing is sharpening the double sided blade is a little awkward but....the knife is tough.

    Has anyone had issues with their otf by Microtech not functioning properly in cold temperatures? Just got a UTX-85 and it will not deploy the blade fully anytime the knife gets below 40F. Hoping this isn't normal and I can get it replaced.

    • @XRING
      @XRING  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sean Tynan Hello Sean, I have heard that using lubricants or lack of lubricants other than Rem Oil can cause this issue.
      Have you tried flooding the knife with this and using compressed air to remove the remaining oil?

    • @tinovalle5278
      @tinovalle5278 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy X-RING. Your suggestion to use Rem Oil is exactly what Microtech recommends and they also have a quick video to help show how to maintain their OTF autos. I’ve experimented with many different conventional and synthetic lubricants in one of my Ultratechs and Rem Oil is the only lubricant I’ve found that doesn’t slow down extension/retraction of the blade. Also, for anyone else who might read this comment, stick with compressed air in a can like one would use to lightly dust electronics or computers when you blow out the excess Rem Oil. Ultratechs have four small springs inside and two small pivoting lock-open, lock-closed latches that might be blown out of place or even bent if a person used high air pressure from any shop compressor. Anyhow, that’s my two cents and I hope it helps people maintain their Microtech OTF knives. Please keep making your very informative videos. I learn something from every one I watch.

      Howdy X-RING and thanks for your reply. Sorry about my long-winded comments. I didn’t know about you working for Microtech until after I had droned on and on a couple of times while commenting. I was just trying to be helpful (I think you probably realize that). Anyhow, please keep making your very informative videos but please, pace yourself when hacking through tires... this old man damn near had a heart attack watching you work. ;)
