I have a decent collection (production knives--microtech, spyderco, benchmade, etc.) and I put a hogue knife in my pocket every day (I play with the others after work!) They (Hogue) sometimes use inferior materials (e.g. 154CM), but the design and execution with the given materials is always superb.
At this point in my knife collecting journey I have reached a level of skill as it pertains to maintaining an edge that has left me hardly caring about the specific steel; as long as it has been decently heat treated and is at least as capable as regular old 420. In fact some of my favorite knives that I own in the collection have ended Ik being in 420 specifically for that reason. Even my 63hrc magnacut knives get abused so hard they rarely go a day without experiencing damage to the edge. So when it happens with my cheap knives I am able to quickly fix it. Trying to keep a super steel edge perfect every day when you’re using it for hard blue collar labor type work is a mf nightmare. I can get a 420 blade sharp in 2 minutes using building materials on the job site.

Honestly I feel like hogue's lower priced knives are some of the best value on the market. I don't really like their higher dollar ones though. If I'm going to spend $300-500 on a knife, I'm going to want some better steel than s30v, not that s30v is bad or that they only use that. But you're right they don't really go for the higher end steels as often even with more expensive knives. Call me old school but I still like microtech for otf knives. I'm carrying a dual edge hera right now and can't believe how much I like it. I've always thought that I'd like a dual edge and I was right, it's insanely handy to have full serrations on one side
I thought I was the only one who sticks a bunch of candy in the box when I ship something. Especially international sales. You can find statistics on the most popular flavors in the country you are shipping to. Then find out what kind of candy isn’t sold there. I was shipping something to a country that loves peanut butter candy, but doesn’t have Reese’s. Apparently, certain luxury stores import them to sell for hugely inflated prices. So I grabbed two of every Reese’s variety at my local store and basically used peanut butter cups in place of packing material.
That's awesome. I'd import a lot of videogames and stuff from Japan/Asia, and sometimes they'd have little extras, or use their local paper as packing paper, but I don't think I ever got candy.... I love their candy, as it's generally less sweet and normal colors, rather than our dye your tongue crap too... You guys sold me. Adding candy/snacks needs to become standard practice!
Every once in a while I get a single tea bag or some candies when I import stuff, always makes me laugh. Though sometimes it can cause some issues with customs. In one very specific instance, Japanese customs blocked a package because on the declaration, the item was listed as gum, which it wasn't. It was some blind boxes of NFC figurines for a nintendo switch game, but because of the theming and marketing everything had food names. I do a bit of domestic shipping and it isn't a problem as long as it isn't liquid, just something to keep in mind.

I think that has been disproven but to each their own. If u have an edc knife you would want 64. In a fixed blade even id want 62. 60-61 is just on the soft side. But its kind of subjective
With blade side movement like that I wouldn't put much faith into how well the blade is anchored into the handle. That being said, I suppose the positive takeaway it that at least if it fails it won't fold into your fingers.
Ok, so HOW do you get knives? I went to Hogue, they don't ship anything automatic and apparently no dealers exist for them, according to their website.
So one thing I want to know about this...or any OTF knife for that matter before I consider buying it....if you put the end of the knife against an object...like a cardboard box and then deploy the blade, will the blade penetrate the cardboard, or will it jump off the track like I has seen so many other OTF knives do over the years?
If you want an OTF that'll do that, then you need to make it yourself....also, you know that's not what OTF knives are designed for, right? Because safety.......🙄🤷♂️🤦♂️
Right at 300 bills.. unfortunately , not in my budget. However, if for some reason I someday can drop 300 bucks on a pocketknife, id give it a look. Until then, 20 dollar knife for my poor ars
I had no love for an otf at all. Until I found the hogue lines. I had three of the Microtech, and all three were not fun, but I have the compound and the hadron. And they are constantly on me.
Depends on the button lock. The actuation and disengage are great. Just as easy. But if it has a hole for deployment it studs it can sometimes get in the way
Lol ... Ill keep my $30 Kershaw SpeedSafe thats been in my pocket for the Last 12-14 years. Its cut everything i ever needed it to, n i only have to sharpen it like once or twice a month. Its got a reversable pocket clip(yes... Im a lefty too, so that matters to me). I can shave with it, its that sharp! Lol 😂 n the best part is the $30 price tag n the flashlight that came with it, n they both still work Iike the day i took them out the package from WalMart. I bought 2nd one just in case! 😂
@@colbywood7667what if i care about the gay candy 😂. Better watch it, the wokety woke algorithm might cancel your comment. Anyway, yea i try to get to the knife fast these days. Check out my newer content. I posted a video yesterday about my favorite USA made otf.
I don't really understand the concept/purpose of these kinds of knives. Is it that you don't flick the switch until you're already moving the handle towards someone's eye?
Huh? No its so u can easily use it one handed. They are very popular with EMS folks because they can get them open in areas a folding knife could not get into or a fixed blade could not safely get to.
@@LeftyEDC I'm guessing EMS doesn't stand for extra marital sex in this instance. But unless you're trying to open the knife inside a tube I'm struggling to see how it would make any difference.. not saying you're wrong and thanks for the reply!
@@subspaceanomaly it stands for Emergency Medical Services. I meany police officers, EMS, Firemen, etc. they can reach into something and open the knife to cut things/people loose. They can also use them to cut seatbelts without having to shove a blade under the belt and into someones chest when cutting it loose. I also have Shorts showing that these double action otfs do not penetrate through things. I wouldn’t aim it at an eye, but if u test it against cardboard or even paper sometimes it will not deploy all the way and just lightly poke it. You are only looking at the movie type stuff, knives are tools. Yes some are designed to be weapons, but most are meant for a purpose as a tool
@@LeftyEDC thankyou, and that makes a lot of sense. It doesn't help that the general American frontier survivalist genre is so predicated on violence and the fantasy of violence, but I agree knives are tools and great tools. I've found fixing up houses and building furniture that a knife is one of my most used tools. The seat belt thing, I'm surprised they don't use special scissors for that.
@@subspaceanomaly can’t have everything on u at all times. I think raptor rescue shears could work. But even then u have to shove something into the person. Im sure there are better explanations but do u see cops walking around with shears as well as everything else on their belts? Haha
I’ve heard nothing but good things about their otfs. Love that the handle is g10. Not really an otf guy but might have to pick one of these up. This video made me get my ultratech out to carry for work tomorrow. Haven’t carried it in at least a year. Don’t know if you read all the comments but I got Karbadize to make me an 80s carbon scale for my firetac and it’s 🔥!!! When I saw the video of your Evo I had to get some.
Yeah man it looks so damn good! I’ll have it in my pocket at blade show Atlanta. I’ll swing by your table and show it to you. Love the content man keep it coming.
Id take combat troodon or guardian tac 035 over grant gavin hawk any day hawk one reminds me of spoiled rich peoples knife the hawk blade to body just looks stange any way just my opinion i love halo 6 and the heretic hydra
The Gravity knife is the five speed SS nitrous 16v custom and the OTF is the automatic 6c with CB antennae, curb feelers,8trak and a ski rack, "Oh The Fun!" lol
I own a few of each and I do not agree. A lot of it I think is muscle memory, one does better with lots of practice. I like my EXO-M for the weight/compactness. I like my MT otf knives for that 12 ga pump shotgun effect.
The fail is the switch not appealing to passing time flicking. The fact that the blade wasn't deployed in the first minute of this video is a review fail. It's why neeve puts in the first 5sec.
So this is definitely not for me. The fist knife you’re handlin is $450. You definitely get what you pay for, but you also get to keep what you don’t spend. Anything over $200 trips the wife’s radar. Any suggestions on a solid automatic for under $200? Thank you.
This was $300. Otfs are tough in the $200 range. Id bump up to $230 and get a Kershaw LiveWire. One of the best otfs out right now. If you don’t mind overseas, Maxace is making some affordable ones and the Takcom Knives Vigor is phenomenal

60-61 is ideal. But not for edge retention. 60-61 is good for well rounded use
Aww yeah Lefty bro . That s not a bad gig checking out as many knives as possible and then designing your own with that knife connosoir experience 👍.
Ok, so HOW do you get knives? I went to Hogue, they don't ship anything automatic and apparently no dealers exist for them, according to their website.
Check dealers. Like BladeHQ , here are some available shrsl.com/4h93w
@@LeftyEDC Bless you ;-)
Nice. Another unobtainium otf.
I can't believe I missed the Mash. It hurts to see how cool it is and not have in my hand.
If I gotta be picky, it's regrettable that the switch travel is so long. Might be necessary to get it to fire so well.
What’s the name of the bigger blade? I’m trying to find it.
Is there knife that shoots out with button press. But will also self retract with button press. Not a slide. Like a self retracting otf?
Not that i know of. That would be electric or something. Winter blade co is working on something like that
Hey Kev any plans for a deadlock?
Id like to try one yea
Man those look good but you should try a Wilcox Tactical. Id say they have them beat for lower price.
So one thing I want to know about this...or any OTF knife for that matter before I consider buying it....if you put the end of the knife against an object...like a cardboard box and then deploy the blade, will the blade penetrate the cardboard, or will it jump off the track like I has seen so many other OTF knives do over the years?
It’ll jump. Especially if u put it that close. I have some videos on it
If you want an OTF that'll do that, then you need to make it yourself....also, you know that's not what OTF knives are designed for, right? Because safety.......🙄🤷♂️🤦♂️
The Hogue is popping the microphone when fired. I love me some tritium- might havta get me that Hogue.
what's the name of the tool You use to tightening the screws ?
A bit driver. Probably GetGoodSkrew or Audacious Concepts Driver
@@LeftyEDC I found it - thx
Nice knife 🔪, I prefer a pew pew for the price. I’m still willing to get for EDC.
So, the one with the low switch is a lot like a Micro tech UTX 85 switch it's low.
What was the name of that driver you were using? Didn’t see it in the links except the stubby.
Audacious concepts anso driver
Right at 300 bills.. unfortunately , not in my budget. However, if for some reason I someday can drop 300 bucks on a pocketknife, id give it a look. Until then, 20 dollar knife for my poor ars
I would like some info on the OTF you used for comparison
Heretic Collosus?
I had no love for an otf at all. Until I found the hogue lines. I had three of the Microtech, and all three were not fun, but I have the compound and the hadron. And they are constantly on me.
The G10 sounds like when you strike the flint wheel of a cigarette lighter
As a lefty myself how do you feel a button lock works for left handed use
Depends on the button lock. The actuation and disengage are great. Just as easy. But if it has a hole for deployment it studs it can sometimes get in the way
What kind of screwdriver is that
Generally, the cheaper an OTF the more metallic ding, good ones make more of a thunky click.
ugh I wish OTFs are CA legal. it's so unfair, i'd love to use one for work
Lol 😂 n the best part is the $30 price tag n the flashlight that came with it, n they both still work
Iike the day i took them out the package from WalMart. I bought 2nd one just in case! 😂
I'm like you I like the hogue better. I'm not really an auto guy especially the ones with skinny blades but that on looks cool.
I just ordered one. Can’t wait to get it
Awesome! Its soo good
He sounds buzzed. Great vid.
Haha definitely not buzzed. I don’t partake in anything
5 mins in and still ain't seen the blade , peace out
✌🏻
@@LeftyEDC nobody cares about the gay candy and stickers. We click on your video to see the knife.
@@colbywood7667what if i care about the gay candy 😂. Better watch it, the wokety woke algorithm might cancel your comment. Anyway, yea i try to get to the knife fast these days. Check out my newer content. I posted a video yesterday about my favorite USA made otf.
@@LeftyEDCthey just hating man, I liked the review 👍
Knife shown at 3:13, your comment and opinion are invalid due to the fact you can't provide factual evidence. Simply put, you're a fucking moron.
Haha
Nice comparison! Nice video!
To be fair, this planet is “right hand biased” 😉
Whats the other otf looks pretty sweet to
That’s cool. tritium rocks. On anything.
How many knives do you have collected? I’m new to the channel.
Probably 50 or so total
I like colossus blade shape way better
Knives now are just ridiculously priced. Like spending 70k on a pickup truck.
Ford 450 4x4 $120,000
Compare blade thickness?
Dont have them anymore sorry. Should have those stats online.
Awesome dude! That scale sounds sick
Yeah man it looks so damn good! I’ll have it in my pocket at blade show Atlanta. I’ll swing by your table and show it to you. Love the content man keep it coming.
Where did u get the mini screwdriver from??
I got the compound for my cousin as a gift. He digs it.
where are the OTF knives that aren't a rectangular box?
uknow, like the ones we were buying for $20, 30 years ago?
Can anyone tell me what that white folder was that popped up towards the latter third of the video?
White or titanium? I showed my Divo Mash. Its actually my brand. Blue creek knives exclusive divo mash
Have you tried the Axial Shift?
Yea i have some videos on it. Great otf
Id take combat troodon or guardian tac 035 over grant gavin hawk any day hawk one reminds me of spoiled rich peoples knife the hawk blade to body just looks stange any way just my opinion i love halo 6 and the heretic hydra
It sounds like it’s full of sand?
And now the domain is available to buy.
Where do you get a tray like that?
Tinkerforce
Does anybody make this style OTF with a 5 1/2 inch blade?
I think heretic makes a xl one as a joke so that could work
@@LeftyEDC Thanks, yes it is a joke $1600 for a 3.7 inch blade
If you think this is the best you should try the Kershaw livewire same steel better switch
Its actually 20CV this is S30V. Livewire video is up on the channel. They are a bit different but also similar. I like both
Better than a Hawk Designs Deadlock?
Haven’t tried one….
Hogue bringin’ it!
I went to order a knife from Brian based on your review but sadly Google says this business is permanently closed.
And think, you could also leave the knives open so we could see them
Be nice to get a ok of 89 Upper Deck cards instead of the 90 Fleer. You'd have a shot at the Griffey Jr rookie 😂
You pass the vibe check dude 😂 👍
The fail is the switch not appealing to passing time flicking. The fact that the blade wasn't deployed in the first minute of this video is a review fail. It's why neeve puts in the first 5sec.
I love my trudoon or however it's spelled. Might try me one of these. Good vid.
I want an otf knife. If I had the money, I would get the John wick off knife. 😫😮💨
I'm surprised tritium isnt more popular in the auto knife market
Right. This one looks like the same idea on my Microtech Navy Scarab
