      The free recruit characters are the most interesting.
      A proper posse, each having unique character dialogue and remarks.
      3 humans (former Holy Nation sentinel seeking the truth beyond holy lands + one drifter claiming of dying of illness who wants to verify a legend + one nomadic wanderer who is interested in roaming and exploring the whole continent)
      1 Shek (Disgraced Shek Warrior charged with desertion after surviving a losing battle with no survivors by falling unconscious from her wounds)
      1 Hive Worker (slowly gaining self-awareness and independence, enthusiastic at doing anything and doesn't know what money is)
      1 Skeleton (waiting for the day it ceases functioning, but decides to take one last adventure even if everything is already seen thanks to long synthetic life)
      There are other ones, but most of the rest require payment and some require some non-monetary hurdles. 1 other "free" character is probably the most difficult "quest".

    On the off-chance that you do a series. Here's some tips:
    1. Thieving is easy mode. Stealing from shops can make you rich, is the quickest way to getting high-grade equipment, and will solve your hunger problems. It used to be even more broken. If you want to play normal mode, don't be a thief. Just a looter.
    2. If you build a specific storage unit (e.g copper storage for copper) and then set up the appropriate job, you will auto haul resources to your storage. This also works for farming and crafting.
    3. Some characters can be recruited for free. If you choose the right dialog options.
    4. Outnumbering an enemy isn't as useful as you might think. Outnumbered characters will default to splash damage.
    5. Enemies are attracted to player outposts like flies. A few bedrolls won't attract them. A single well will alert every nearby faction to your presence.
    6. Picking up characters is OP. You can smuggle allies, carrying drugs, into cities, prevent an ally from being arrested and keep an enemy helpless by picking them up.
    7. If you need money, and fast, you can turn in your allies for their bounties and then break them out of jail. Don't do this too often. It makes the game too easy.
    8. You're never as ready to start your own settlement as you think you are.
    9. Broken limbs will heal. Dismembered limbs can be replaced. Don't be afraid to lose a fight with a humanoid. Be afraid to lose a fight with an animal.
    10. Tech Hunters will actually heal you if they find your unconscious body.
    11. Kidnapping a hungry bandit is a great way to have a free punching bag and can help you get on the bottom rung of the combat ladder.
    12. Research is the most solid form of progress. You can get killed, enslaved or be invaded by an enemy faction and have everything basically reset. But, so long as you still have one playable character, you can recover and you can recover faster with more research completed.
    13. There is no end point to this game. Set your own goals. But, speaking from what I know, there is a character that exists as a final boss of sorts. They live in the most dangerous area in the game and no faction has been able to get a foothold in their domain. Let alone reach them.
    14. Good luck.

    • @greybayles7955
      @greybayles7955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Who do you consider the final boss? Cat-Lon? Im no Kenshi pro but ive sunk a few hours in and it seems like a lot of the end game foes are about on the same level. There a bunch of NPCs with 100s in combat skills, but knowing Kenshi there is probably some 200 skill ultra chadbot in a cave somewhere ready to yeet you into the void for walking within 100 yards of him.

      @@greybayles7955 If there's any 200 skill characters. I've yet to find them. But, by terms of lore and where you find Cat-Lon, it seems like he's built up as the final boss. I've kidnapped the holy phoenix and carted him around the holy nation for shits and giggles. But Cat-Lon is always awake and always has his army at his beck and call. Unless you have ridiculously high stealth stats, you have to fight him and his army and its hard just to get your army into his area.

      @polishlinks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There are no 200 skilled characters. Wingwam is the highest skilled recruit with 50-ish skills. Cat-lon would be the "final" boss, but setting your own goals (whether it be systematically taking over all Holy Nation towns, or liberating all slaver towns, or taking over a section of the map, or whatever) is really the best way to go. The beauty of the game is that you will never have quest marker or directives, instead you must forge your own path. Sometimes you won't know what that is when you start a play through, but it will likely organically occur. For example, I had a play though where the only characters I could initially find were Shek females and the Holy Nation were constantly on my ass. It evolved into a large group of only Shek females called the Valkyries whose sole mission was to crush the Holy Nation and hand their territory over to the Shek. It wasn't planned, but it was perfect.

    RE: Stacking items - some containers allow stacking, some do not. The base inventory does not, but some (not most, but some) types of backpacks do, notably the trader's pack. However, the packs that allow stacking tend to have higher combat penalties.
    RE: Holy Nation being the bad guys - yes. However, arguably most of the game's factions are the "bad guys", so it's all relative. At least Holy Nation doesn't eat you for breakfast.
    RE: Growing crops - so, what you need to be aware of is that there are three different biomes for different crop types (arid, green, and swamp.) Some crops (like rice) can actually be grown just fine in the swamp. However, greenfruit requires "green" biome. It's not always intuitive what kind of biome is where just by looking, but there is a prospecting feature to tell you the suitability of the current area, and what kinds of resources are in the vicinity.
    RE: Swamp raptors - they're mostly herbivores...

    • @benk50000
      @benk50000 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know this is a 3 year old comment, but something I would like to add about growing crops is that it's probably a bad idea to start building a base early game unless you have a lot of people and want to turn the game into an RTS game. Placing anything outside of the camping tab creates an outpost which then attracts raids no matter how big it is. Raids in kenshi are frequent and brutal early game. They will require your best units to always stay at the base to defend it unless you can afford to pay mercenaries to protect it at 1,000 c per day. In short, building an outpost early game will lock you to that location on the map and really hinder your ability to explore. You don't really need farming for food unless you have a very large squad. If you want a place to live, buying a house in a city is generally a better idea early on for small squads. You can still build infrastructure in a city to do research and be able to train trade skills like smiting to generate income to buy the food you need. Copper mining alone can easily produce enough income for feed a moderate size squad and there are a number of cities with copper just outside the city, close enough that you can still automate them bringing the copper to storage containers in your house. Since most cities have guards, you don't have to worry about protecting your property and can safely explore with your full squad to scavenge for certain things you need for research tree progression. If you want to play the game as an RTS and make a base in the early game, I would recommend picking the freedom seekers start as it it gives you everything you need to start out including one starting character with "decent" combat.

    @jacobellinger8027 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Use the icon on the lower left to choose the speed your party walks, there is a setting that forces everyone to walk the same speed.
    Don't build a base until you get a crew of about 8 and they all have most of their stats at 10 or higher.
    To build a defendable base you will need to research walls and build city walls around your base.
    In order to research you should buy a home in one of the city's and build a research project table in it.
    In the same building you can build a ore chest and anyone assigned to mine will automatically fill it.
    Early on you can get most of your food from wild dogs and herbivores.
    You can stack items and generally make your inventory larger by equiping a backpack. Not all backpacks let you stack items but most do.
    You can join the shenobi thieves who will defend you in that town if you pay a small fee. They also sell backpacks

    That village where he mined copper is called Hub. It's an awesome place and if Jon had gone on the other side of the town, out the entrance near the bar, he would have found two decent sized copper deposits, and a road with enough water and fertility he could have set up a farm right there. I've actually recorded fifteen episodes of a run where I did just that, ending in me going south into Shek territory with 20,000 Cats, and hiring an entire squad's worth of Shek companions as bodyguards.
    Granted, I started with the small group setup, rather than as a single person.

    Kenshi is actually more fun to watch when someone first experiencing it than a pro player playing it slaying everyone so easily ! Thx for the upload =) , I hope more experiment videos would come soon ^_^ and that was a good run for Gecko and Logan .

    Just started this game about a week ago myself, and have been thinking "I really hope Jon covers this at some point." Great minds my friend!
    I know it is a bit buggy and you have to be a little more RP since there aren't really quests, but I think it would be a great series!

    Jon, please do a full series. I got into Kenshi a short while ago myself and I have to say the game allows for a lot and although it's a learning curve it is one that makes it possible to feel connected to your characters and what they've gone through
    It will kick your ass because you're not special but it will also make you feel genuinely fullfilled when you overcome an obstacle or progress where you want to
    I had to start my current game 9 times just to get a base going and not get overrun each time and now that I've gotten there I will honestly say it feels like my Ironclad Keep (which is now recognised as a city due to it's size and economic production strength) feel like home, a battle hardened fortress and a place where I can feel safe in the wasteland. M characters all have their tasks and the strength they built up as a group makes me always smile when I see the base. An undeniable monument to the strength of the reforged, even if we're one day driven out, they can't take down our home, our place and I will rebuild and reclaim that place
    Kenshi is the kind of game where it's hard but fair and because of it's difficulty each victory is earned and makes you want to push further

  • @polishlinks
    @polishlinks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    If you ever decide to play Kenshi again, here's a couple things to help:
    Get beaten up in safe ways: The only reason Logan and Gecko died at the end is that you hadn't leveled up their toughness so they bleed out very easily. Getting knocked down and having some patch you up in the early game is important. When you had your mercs fighting the dust bandits you should have put your people front and center to take hits and become tougher.
    Take the "survival" aspect of the game quite seriously. When you do set up a base, the game will not be fair. Without spoiling anything, do what you have to do to survive. There are plenty of ways to bounce back.
    When your people become more experienced at fighting, note that they are becoming more proficient in the weapons they are using. Pay attention to what weapons they are good at (racially), and what armor could work well with those weapons. Kitting out a character isn't necessarily straight forward if you aren't familiar with the game. Any build can work with any race, but it's not always optimal.
    Happy to provide a lot more help but I want to stay spoiler free.

      Trimalchio is a character in the 1st century AD Roman work of fiction Satyricon by Petronius. He plays a part only in the section titled "Cēna Trīmalchiōnis" (The Banquet of Trimalchio, often translated as "Dinner With Trimalchio"). Trimalchio is an arrogant former slave who has become quite wealthy by tactics that most would find distasteful. The name "Trimalchio" is formed from the Greek prefix τρις and the Semitic מלך (melech) in its occidental form Malchio or Malchus.[1] The fundamental meaning of the root is "King", and the name "Trimalchio" would thus mean "Thrice King" or "greatest King".[1]

There's been a big emphasis on modding and it's distracting from new/obscure development. I kinda miss the really awful ones but this approach is far more important I reckon.

    Jon you can actually right click on the map with your people selected and they will go there. This way you don’t have to keep orienting yourself!
    Also items become stackable once you have a backpack. Garrus (pack animal thing) are good for this
    The shinobi guild mostly keep to themselves but if you join them you can fence any stolen goods without worry
