  • Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a game about the process of evolution over 8 million years, taking a small family of staggeringly dumb hominids and trying to lead them towards enlightenment. Though I'll settle for not getting eaten.

      It's _really_ hard to make evolution into an interesting game (at least, interesting to people who don't find evolution interesting on its own). After all, evolution is basically just how chance guided by an unforgiving environment makes for a really interesting path of least resistance. Lean into that, you ruin the game; lean into the game, you ruin the evolution.

    • @couchpotatoe91
      @couchpotatoe91 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothymclean Yeah, I feel you. A buddy of mine is making a boardgame which is about playing as an animal race which goes through evolution. The evolutionary path there isn't chosen randomly, but by the player: You draw cards and decide which path of evolution you want to take, e.g. walking upright, growing specific teeth etc. Some of them, e.g. swimming or flying, require special bones that make the species lighter, but also less resistent to attacks.

    Here are a few tips, just to explain things. When you enter unknown areas, you develop fear, you have to search around discovering things to reduce and eventually conquer the fear. You have to watch the circle in the left and fill it and then approach a white light. Also, coconuts heal stomach pains and venom( water too). The red leaf looking food heals/ protects against broken bones and coldness. The furry looking item heals cuts. Also be sure that you mate all the possible Aldults and creaye kids, because if you only do with one pair the next generation won't mate with the people in the clan because they're all related.

    I want to see more, and i looked at the game's page on epic games. I've noticed that a lot of the traditional gamer ques not to do something have been a bit subverted. I can see how the scary faces would frustrate someone when they go out into the jungle because most gamers see that and assume they aren't supposed to be there and the game will kill them outright for doing so via fiat. It seems from the videos on the page that the devs didn't really intend that as an inpassable barrier but more of a representation of being scared of what you don't know in character. It does seem dangerous though as it kinda obscures your view.
    Also i don't think everything needs a tone. Maybe experiment with the obsidian more? I saw obsidian modify obsidian in one of their clips. Also, more just because you didn't try it when the button prompt came up, try grooming your fellow clan members. It's a fairly common monkey social activity so it might unlock something!

      In one of the videos showing off the game pre-release they said that the fear eyes were meant to be pushed through with groups and general expansion as food will run out eventually- seeing the eyes as an out of bounds marker is actually beneficial to the intention from a meta-standpoint as the player may be worried they’ll die if they go to far which is exactly what the character is feeling

    In the next episode of Stellaris, you know when Jon dies, he better announce the next series as this, this'd be awesome as a series.

    If you make another video of this Jon, try grinding stuff with your half rock! Like maybe plants for a poultice or obsidian to make a stabby thing. Oh! Maybe you can grind a point onto that stick!

    I do find it a bit annoying how what most games call evolution is essentially inteligent design, since you have direct control over it, something no real creature has. It'd be much more accurate if they just evolved over time on their own, So if you want to make them go a certain way you have to alter your playstyle. If you want them to get better at something, you need to do more of that thing.

    • @alexanderchristopher6237
      @alexanderchristopher6237 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by intelligent design in evolution games? And what kind of evolutionary playstyle you're wanting? And isn't a lot of evolution just them adapting to certain conditions and learning new things? And that extinction is caused due to certain species can't adapt to the new status quo?
      I mean, you controlling your avatar in-game in the same way a divine being controls humanity.

    Whilst I would love to see you make this into a series I'm kinda glad it's not the first series of this game I've watched as you did misunderstand/misinterpreted a couple of things but it's alright, I mean the game doesn't tell you anything so interpreting what the game is trying to tell you is kinda part of the game.

    Jon! Definitely not the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs! The K-T event was about 66 million years ago, you said at the outset that we’re about 10 MYA. The most recent ancestor of all hominidae lives about 14 MYA.
