      In all honesty that RM125 should be very RELIABLE Joe. It was def NOT taken care of by previous owner. I believe they probably tried run straight gas in machine..as you said. Sad. 90s RMs are supremely reliable when taken care of. Hope it works out well 4ya.

    I wouldn’t adjust idle with the throttle cable. Basically that acts like moving the needle clip down. You want that sleeve to bottom out when you release the throttle and let the needle position decide how rich or lean it is. That can mess you up during tuning. That’s probably why you had to bring the needle clip position up more. Just food for thought

  • @deanburdick1474
    @deanburdick1474 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Don't adjust your idle with the cable. It will change when you steer and be super unstable. Otherwise, sweet bike man.

    You know I’ve watched enough of these rebuild videos by now and I’ve never rebuilt a carb mind you but when it was having trouble starting my first thought was pilot jet. I guess I’m learning a thing or two. Lol.

    10:31-----2-stroke engines will oil up sparkplugs when ran in an unloaded condition. Take it out and play with it, should clean right up!😎
    18:34-----Your crank seals are fine, otherwise it would idle way lean and/or smoke bigtime. I'd say power valve issues offhand if it doesn't clear out.
    If it were me, I'd put a 175 mainjet in it(172 being stock), and drop pilot jet size at least one down to a 38 and see how it runs, should clean up on the bottom and run even harder on top. Also drop jet needle one or two notches as needed.

  • @robert100471
    @robert100471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    NEVER EVER adjust the idle with the throttle cable it will accelerate when you turn the handle bars, very dangerous, and running it oil rich (40:1) will make it run lean and have terrible low end, run a quality mixing oil and correct fuel and you should be all set bub. oh and for the love of rods learn to shift lol.

    FYI, too much oil actually gives you a lean fuel/air ratio (more oil = less fuel). The crank should be just fine if you sent it to someone who knows what they are doing.

    • @RealSuburbanCowboy
      @RealSuburbanCowboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@splif7773 yes, you have 3 components, AIR, FUEL and OIL, the more OIL you add, the higher the air to fuel ratio, therefore more lean. It will burn smokey, but that is just the oil burning off. The air/fuel ratio will be lean. I am not making this up. You should run the recommended oil ratio for your engine.

  • @brents4729
    @brents4729 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Adjusting the cable is to be used for throttle freeplay ONLY. Good way to get someone killed having the cable too tight when they turn. Only adjust the idle with the idle screw on the carb. Adjust air screw for highest possible idle, then richen a tiny bit, then adjust the idle accordingly. Ride mid throttle and listen to the bike youll know if its too lean or rich on the needle setting. In your case your needle is way too lean. Drop the clip to raise the needle back where it was. If that dont work youll need a different tapered needle. Do a wide open plug chop on a new spark plug to check the main jet. Should be a coffee color. Jetting is super easy when you understand it.

Lol in the days of when all young boys had 50cc and 125cc. Now they make them all 4stroke and wouldn't do anything over 70mph. Excellent work as them crankshafts are hard to do even with all the tools as the bolts aren't the same size when you put it back together again.

    Adjusting the idle with the throttle cable is not how you should do it. Those adjusters are only for adjusting cable slack. You should have some play in your throttle, if you don’t chances are when you turn the bars it can raise the slide in the carb like your twisting the throttle because the cable has no slack. Adjust the idle using the idle screw that’s why they have that there lol some bikes have the idle on the choke nob, you twist the choke left or right to raise or lower the idle.

  • @davidmerlino4817
    @davidmerlino4817 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's running terrible you never adjust the throttle idle screw while it's running shut it off open throttle up put in a little bit and that's just I don't high then slowly adjust it down to where you want it you put little marks on the slide and then they stick and they can stick wide open or higher RPM than what you want then you were in the slide then you have to buy new slide for carburetor and also like I said jetting is done by elevation you're great you're good but you still have a lot to learn

    Do not set idle with throttle cable . Power valves are trash . Clean the carbs better .

    Still sputters a little when you first hit the throttle. Lotta guys back in the day used to bin those Keihins for a Mikuni Flatslide, and that low-end sputter usually disappeared. It's one thing if it's just a Trailbike, but when guys were racing them, that low-end sputter usually cost them the Holeshot, and that's why they swapped the Carb...
