  • !*!*!*!* NOTE!*!*!*!*: BEFORE STARTING THIS PROCEDURE, CLOSE AND LOCK ALL DOORS, OR UNPLUG THE SBC BRAKE MODULE UNDER THE HOOD TO PREVENT THE BRAKES FROM PERFORMING A SELF TEST DURING THE REPAIR. (IE: CRUSHED FINGERS, BLOWN OUT BRAKE PISTON)
IN THIS VIDEO I'M REPLACING MY DUSTY MB BRAKE PADS WITH LOW DUST CERAMIC PADS.
THIS IS A VERY EASY JOB TO DO.
MY CAR IS A 2005 E500 W211. I DON'T KNOW IF THE BRAKES ARE ANY DIFFERENT ON OTHER MODEL YEARS OR ON THE E320 OR E350. BE SURE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
I USED THE POWERSTOP EVOLUTION PADS FROM ROCK AUTO. IT'S BEEN ABOUT 6 MONTHS SINCE I MADE THIS VIDEO AND I HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THEM SO FAR. NO CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE, BUT MY WHEELS STAY 100% CLEANER!

I really like the newspaper trick between disk and bracket when greasing pad slides area.

Before you do anything YOU MUST disconnect the battery & keep the doors closed if you have an SBC brake setup on your W211. If the system is activated while you're changing pads or rotors, the loss of fingers is a distinct possibility!!!!!

Good job what about to bleed the fluid I heard something about the sbc unit disconnect? If you know anything about that

You need a module or a STAR setup to bleed the brakes, plus a good pressure bleeder. You are better off just spending the $120 and have the MB dealer do it.

Suggestion for the author and the comments section, only thing making this short of perfect would be a tools list pinned to the top of the comments

So this should be the same on my 08 E350 base model correct? I appreciate the tutorial!

I think 2006-2009 is different pads on the E350. They may install exactly the same though. I'm not sure.

Someone told me you can retract all four brakes eletronically for service if you have the software. Not sure if its true the software is probabally expensive.

STAR system, expensive & you're not "officially" allowed to have it. There is a module you can buy on ebay that does nothing but deactivate and/or depressurize the SBC unit.

@@DIYBenzGarage I bought a well-regarded Mercedes-specific diagnostic that includes SBC deactivation... It works but there is a specific procedure to follow that leaves you thinking "well... is the SBC deactivated?!".
TBH it's easier to just unplug the SBC pump, despite the somewhat fiddly Torx screw holding in the connector. Even though I have the tool, I just unplug the SBC if I want to do anything brake-related now (and obviously leave all doors shut and ignition off). I've never had an error come-up after reconnecting.

How about a video showing how to disconnect the SBC unit?

good one , thanks , what did you do about the SBC brake unit? did you deactivate it?

    • @DIYBenzGarage
      @DIYBenzGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

You should at least unplug it. I didn't, i was just sure not to open the doors or anything that might activate it. If you don't unplug it, proceed at the risk of your own fingers.

@Iskren Ivanov Only thing about that (in the USA) is it will reset the computer and you will not pass an emissions inspection until you drive over 100 miles. If you are not due for inspection, fee free to unplug.

I had no idea what the sbc unit was but I followed this video did the rear ones and nothing happened luckily but I did some research on the front pads would it be the same as long as the doors arnt opened during break replacement ? Or do you know if just disconnecting batteries would be fine ? I’m hesitant to do the front now please get back to me ASAP !!! Love this video

The SBC will test the brake system if you open the doors as a self test. I did it without disconnecting anything, but I recommend you unplug the SBC connector. Don't unplug the battery, that will erase some settings for the power windows and other things, plus the SBC has a backup battery under the cabin air filter, you would need to disconnect that also.

Also, I have a front brake video posted, you may want to watch that also.
