How to Find Preceptors

Finding preceptors is HARD! You want to spend you time studying not looking for a preceptor. I explain the difficulties and successes that I had with finding my own preceptors.

This is one of the most helpful videos I've seen. I am in the "desperate" phase and have just a week left to find a primary care preceptor for this fall or I have to take the semester off... I may be reaching out to one of the services to find one... but better than falling a semester behind I suppose. I've tried networking but it seems people still don't follow through or get back to you. Thank you for the helpful tips!!

I'm so glad you were able to find all of your preceptors. You are right, that is the most difficult thing about NP school. I think no one wants to precept because they may be afraid that they really aren't confident in their skills and they may think the NP student would notice. Who knows, but NP schools need to do something about the preceptor problem. I think I may be in the same position as you were, I may have to pay. Thank you for the informative video. :)

Enjoyed your video. My experience was a little different. My 1st clinical preceptor, networking did help. I had to ask for help from NP at work, she referred me to someone who referred me to someone else, but it worked. Three of the preceptors I used were from a list my school supplied to us of contracted providers other students used in the past. Normally this does not produce preceptors because like you said if they don't know you, then they have no obligation to precept you, just because their neighbors son or friend happened to attend the school and now they are on a list of contracted providers, does not mean they will do the same for you. But for me it worked three separate times. I literally picked up the phone and explained who I was and what I needed. I e-mailed or faxed my forms without meeting anyone or knowing anyone. This last semester I hope to work with the preceptor I have now. Yes, it can be challenging but you just have to do it. Start early but I was always nervous about staring more than 6 months before the class started.

I highly recommend reaching out to the nearest Area Health Education Center. They are non-profits and one of the things they do is help find preceptors.
