- I've ridden the Trek Roscoe 8 for just over a year now. Here are my thoughts on this plentifully playful plus hardtail. For context, I got into mountain biking about 8 or 9 years ago and have ridden regularly since. My previous trail bike was a GT Karakoram 3.0 that, by the time I finally pulled the trigger on this Roscoe, was only stock on it's frame. I grew up riding motocross, and the more I learned about bike geometry and how it affects riding characteristics the more I knew what I "wanted" out of a mountain bike. After countless hours spent researching my next bike purchase I arrived at the Roscoe. Find out in this video how it's worked out!

Got my 2020 Roscoe 8 for almost 3 months now and i love it! Great value for the money. The midfat tires give great confidence. Surely a bike to consider for all.

Hey brother, great review, I'm wondering; do you feel like you get enough rear comfort from this hardtail? I know it won't perform like a full suspension bike, but I'm on a dual sport Trek, not a good single-track bike, the shop techs are suggesting a Roscoe. Looks like you were really handling single-track well and I'm no speed demon. A few times (4-5x) a year I hit Big Bear and Brian Head Summit Mtn Bike Park, but I'm getting beat up using the dual sport trek. Even though it's a hardtail, do you feel the Roscoe makes the trail more comfortable?
I've had my 2019 for almost years now and still love it, I did all the same mods as you but upgraded the hubs to hope pro 4 they are a game changer 👌 also put mt501 4 piston brakes and levers night and day difference
I have a 2017 Roscoe 7. Added a one up dropper post and upgraded the pedals. Ive ridden a lot of trails on it in Western North Carolina. It's been a great bike. I highly recommend it.
almost 1.5 years on my 2019. love it. upgraded the wheels, to some dt swiss due to the rear hub issue. got it fixed under warranty. gave my son the old wheels for his schwinn axum , also , fork to a pike and new pedals. i find it perfect now. oh and threw on some slx brakes off my old bike. i really have no complaints. works as my commuter and trail bike. great review and on point. i agree.
Awesome video, well done. I pulled the trigger on the Roscoe 7 2020. I thought the same thing more value for the money. I upgraded the pedals and put a volt seat on it. At 58 this is my first MTB, I love it and ride thge single tracks everyday.
Awesome review of an awesome bike. I have the roscoe 8 '21, ridden it 3000km+ now. Good for both commuting and mountainbiking. Had to replace my rear wheel as that one was worn around 2500km.

Good deal! Yeah I'm a little jealous of what you can get in the slightly cheaper 6 and 7 models now vs when I got mine lol. They're amazing bikes for the money. When I started trail riding 8 or 9 years ago, you couldn't get anything NEAR this fun and capable for around $1,000-$1,300.

Killer review man! I almost bought the Rosco, ended up buying the Stache 29+ instead. I like that I can run it SS, but essentially similar spec'd bikes. Couldn't agree more about how fun and capable it is for where I live & ride. There are some really nice HT's out there, but where I live, choices were slim and I actually wanted a LBS to backup what I was buying...which they've done, already with no questions or problems. Treks go on sale maybe twice a year, if you can wait, it's worth giving them a test ride. I will be upgrading the brakes this year, the 180's for my size/weight are undersized. I see 4-piston in my future.
I have the 2018 and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve upgraded to the Hope rear hub, SLX brakes and added Cushcore. Each of those upgrades was significant.

Got a fuji bighorn 27plus and I love the plus tires hartail. So fast and fun! And the front fender is a game changer
I upgraded all the same parts on mine. But the game changer (especially if you have a lot of climbs) is the rear hub. I just went with the Trek Line Comp 40 rear wheel with end caps to make the 148 fit the 141 hub spacing. Its 54 points of engagement and I added extra pawls to make it 108 points. Its so night and day better now.
You are spot on with the 2020 Roscoe 7 being the best bang for the buck. It's almost identical in spec to the 2019 8 but was $200+ cheaper.
I bought a 2019 X-Cal 8 - demo'd the Roscoe 8 but didn't like the wider tires. X-Cal shares the frame w/ Roscoe. Upgraded to a 1x11 drive train and added a dropper post.Added carbon bars, pedals, grips, tires. Yeah... have the Judy Silver as well and I think its next to go. Front fork is really important on a hard tail. Great video!!
I agree, the 2021 Roscoe 7 is the best value right now and it just happens to have the best color scheme for me (murdered out black). I'm pretty sure I'll upgrade the cockpit too for the same reasons. I like risers and just about anything non-OEM for saddles & stems. I'm sure I'm going to go with SPDs for pedals. Great review. Just picked up my 2021 Roscoe 6 from Trek @ Williamsburg VA on Saturday! First ride yesterday and WOW.. Previous road racer and brand new to MTB. Looking forward to this new adventure.. GREAT video and keep on PEDDLING!
UPDATE: I finally got rid of the Suntour front fork and replaced it with the Rockshox REBA RL. I’ve also upgraded the seat to an Ergon Seat and have had the tires setup to Tubeless. I’ve ordered the Line Pro Carbon handle bar and Line Pro Stem as well. I’ve also upgraded the wheels to the Line Pro 40 Carbons with XR2 tires. I also upgraded the peddles and grips with Ergon as well and WOW, does this bike ride like a DREAM!!!!

Thanks for mentioning the "cement mixer" noise. My Roscoe 7 2020 does the same. I hear it only when on a stand.
Same with mine. You can easily hear it costing on the work stand or with it flipped (like for a trail repair), but otherwise it doesn't seem to affect anything at least on mine.
Excellent review! I have my eyes set on a second hand R8. Yes, 2019, and 27.5. Interestingly, I find that the lettering (S,M,M/L,L, etc) nomenclature runs a bit large for me. I'm 5'11", longer legs than torso, and I'm going for a M.

I just bought a roscoe 8 XL 2021 a few days ago at my local Trek shop. They had a 2021 Fuel Ex bike XL also but it was like $4k. Wasnt trying to spend that kinda money on my first mountain bike yet. Lol. Im loving the Roscoe 8 though :)
I built this exact bike except I put another 3k CND into it with the plan of moving components to a full suss frame and throw all the original components back on and sell it.
After riding it, I think I'll just keep it. Fantastic everything bike.
Great review! Totally agree with all you said. I just had for a year as well, and just decided to upgrade the fork for a Fox Rhythm 34 140mm, put SLX brakes and a 15mm riser Spank Spike bars a couple of months ago. Rides much nicer now, although bottom bracket is crooked now, thinking of getting a dub with nicer cranks soon. Same issues with the rear hub, replaced the free hub body 2 times and waiting for wheels to come back in stock to get it replaced under warranty.
Heck yeah man! I bet it rides like a whole different bike with that fork! Were the slx brakes worth it? I keep thinking about going for them myself... The levers alone just look much more comfortable and easy to one finger in techy trails...
Inconsistent TechDad the feel of the SLX is much better, more snappy bite. Also bigger rotor at the front make it a bit better. Overall not a hugeee difference but worth if you can get it for cheap (I got the 2 piston second hand taken off a new bike, but 4 pistons should be much better) or if the stock ones stop working.
@@InconsistentTechDad I have SLX on my Roscoe as well. Take a look at the Shimano MT 520 Quad piston brakes. I have them on another bike and they are an amazing value. If I had to do it all over, I'd get another set of the MT 520's instead of the SLX.

This video is inspiring, I am looking at options for my next Mtb, hardtail, a new used Trek X-Caliber 7 2021, ML frame, 29 rim, and I recently saw the new Roscoe 6 with rim in the official Trek store in my country 27.5 plus, only available in M frame, and it is captivating me, the question I have is if the M frame of the ROscoe will be enough for me, height 1.77cm, 81 cm inseam, do you think the M measurement in the Roscoe It will fit me well, thanks for your comments

I got the 2020 Roscoe 8, as an upgrade from an ex-rental hardtail. Such a lovely difference, really enjoying it. Have changed the chainring to 34t, as mine came with 30t. Really good upgrade. Next thing for me is new pedals with more grip. Totally agree with the fender. Especially in the rain so much better.
Yeah I keep tossing around the idea of the front chain ring swap, but my legs really like the super low tooth count on our hills around here haha. Wouldn't mind a few more teeth coming back down those hills though or for just cruising around town.
Do the roscoe 8 and roscoe 6 have the same frame?
My 2020 Roscoe 7 rear hub started making the same noise during the second ride! Decided to just bite the bullet and throw a Hope Pro 4 in there. Overall, I love the bike and can’t wait to get it back from the bike shop!
The hub problems people have on this bike really are a shame. Whether it's "just a noise" or a real issue... I feel like we shouldn't all be having these problems on a $1500 or so bike. It's not technically a real issue for most people, but... I dunno... Seeing how many people here have the same problems that I had with it are pretty bad 😐
I have a 2019 stach 7 and absolutely love it...I was gonna get the Roscoe but at the end of the year I picked up the stach on sale for same price as a Roscoe 8..the hub is complete garbage and I am currently waiting for a new placed wheel with a bontrager rapid drive 108 tooth hub.
That 3M stuff just use spray bottle with couple drops dish soap in it , soak the whole sticky side with the bottle as well as your hands and the frame. This method you can move it over and over and when in the right spot just squeegee the water off from under the 3M film center out. I use a towel and a finger. This will give you flawless results!
oh and round the edges on the film way less likely to peel.....
Definitely a cool review - good stuff. Dunno if I can stretch the budget for a full sus. Sounds like a good option. Oh - I agree with the flat bar thing. A little rise make bars just look like bars imo.
That's where I was at on the full sus, just couldn't quite make that kinda spend without feeling like I was cutting too deep into family funds lol. The Roscoe is a beast for the price especially, and I feel like I can enjoy it so much more since it wasn't overspending.
Try some 2.6 maxxis wide trail if you want a little more of nimble feel .

I had the Roscoe 7, the geometry definitely needs to be better, here in bc (north shore Squamish ECT) anything that is steep will feel sketchy on this especially if you upgrade the brakes like I did. I also had the cement hub issue. there are other more "trail" bikes at this price. but it's still a overall fun and poppy ride if your trails are flowy and more calm
I think I need clarification on something... in the video you mentioned that the tires were set up as tubeless... yet you have a spare tube attached to your frame. Can you confirm why?
Does the X Caliber actually shares the frame with the Roscoe?

nice review! I have the same bike, same year, different upgrades but mainly stock. Good times. I may go down to a 2.6" tire size. Oversize hardtail the way to go for us with not enough money for a full suspension but sometimes the 2.8" feels a little soft on corners. I'd like to try the 2.6" and see if there's more "feel". Or maybe change tire pressure a bit. overall I love it
If you want a stiffer tire even on 2.8 get one with 60 tpi, if go a 120 tpi it will be squishier
I have barely owned my 2020 Roscoe 8 a month, but it's been a blast so far. I had taken over a two year break from Mtn biking after breaking my third frame, not from super aggressive riding, just fatigue as far as I can say. My only two upgrades were; tubeless right out the door and a new set of Bontrager 32mm grips (I have fairly large hands and the Trek store sent me a $20 coupon, so they only cost me $5)
Awesome choices I'd say! When you hold these plus tire tubes in your own hand, you reallize what a difference tubeless really makes in rotational weight. Best $20 or so you can spend on a bike in my opinion.
Upgraded my trek 4300 to a Specialized Fuse last year and I love it so far. Really wanted another Trek, especially the teal Roscoe, but went with the Fuse instead bc it was the same price as the Roscoe and had the thru axle. Not sure if I'll ever notice the added stiffness, but it's just reassuring to have
Totally understand. And for me I was really torn between the same two bikes. I like the guy that runs my local trek dealer more than the specialized shop near by lol. So I landed on the trek. I'm sure they're both awesome bikes though. Plus hardtails are just excellent.
I wanted to go with a Specialized Fuse Expert, but I couldn't justify the extra $400. I ended up with a 2020 Trek Roscoe 8 and I have no regrets. Like another comment, my only gripe is the lack of a thru-axle even if for the last 30 years of riding Mtn bikes my previous bikes had QR rears.

@@shmoggy417 I wanted a lighter fork. I really wanted the Fuse Expert, but couldn't justify the extra $350 just to get a through axle. Not to sound like a bike snob, but I had certain components and fork choices. Gotta be happy with your purchase or you won't want to ride it as much. The Recon is a decent fork, but a tad heavier than the RS 35 Gold. I tend to ride alot of slow going rocky trails that require alot of front end lifting, so any weight saved is good. My Roscoe by no means is light, but it's tons lighter than my last Chromoly full suspension I use to ride. I clean sections that I never could on my old full suspension

I personally just went with the Fuse bc I figured the frame was the most important part of a new bike, bc everything else can be upgraded/changed in the future. I also wasn't really worried about components since it was really my first real bike and I'm looking to keep it for a while. But, long as you are happy with your ride, then it's a great choice, especially if it suits your riding better! I understand the "wanting to ride it" part too, the Fuse is great, but that Roscoe did look amazing 😂
I upgraded the rear wheel to the powerline Comp 40 with the bontrager rapid drive hub... then upgraded to the 108 points of engagement... huge improvement
Great honest review man ! I’m sitting at the bike shop as they set up my new rear bontrager 54 hub to 108 lol cause the stock one grinding so much it slowed the wheel ( first month riding ) the formula hubs are sub par
They crank the cone caps to tight and low grease .

Nice! And yes if I ever upgrade the fork, I think the RS35 will be my choice. That thing is a beast of a fork for the price. Anything much better is like double the cost or more! I still (knock on wood) sorta can't wait for the crappy hub to fully go out so I have a real reason to get a nice loud one!

ABMVT Applied Body Mechanics can you explain what the 32 oval is? Is that the chainring? Do you have an actual part/brand name you could share? I have the 2020 trek Roscoe 8, the fork is amazing and the new brakes are really nice.
Larry Buller sure ok there are a few out there but the leading one is called Absolute Black , you want a 32 oval ( that’s the best size for our bikes ) it’s a 3mm offset for boost bikes .

Man I don’t know what to do!! Looking at Roscoe 6 or Xcaliber 7. I’ll be doing trails that aren’t too technical. Also plan on some bikepacking with roads and paved trails mixed in with single tracks. Would that be stupid riding these fat tires on roads? Like a trip 50/50 of trail/road.
I have the same bike and have been going through the rear hub battle. Freehub body has been changed twice, outer bearing once, and then last week the pawls let go in the freehub body about 4 miles into a ride. Was able to snag a Stans Baron S1 rear wheel with a Durasync hub that just went on today. That Formula hub freehub body combo is garbage and under spec'd if you ask me for a trail bike with 1x12.
The fork was a something I wasnt a fan of until about 500 miles in then it seems to have broken in and no complaints.
I have however bent 3 NX eagle Cassettes. SRAM has made good on them each time but I threw a Sunrace on there when I swapped the wheel.
Otherwise I agree with you I love the bike, I love the plus tires. Tempted to get something beefier than the Rekons but also love the low rolling resistance.
Yea, the hubs are the only thing I dislike about this bike. Very playful, and the 120 mm fork feels like it has at least 140 mm of travel w/ volume spacers.
im very happy with mine. Would buy again. I also went with the blue accessories! Just had my raceface chesters bite the dust. One snapped off.

@@InconsistentTechDad yea Im Ok thanks. I noticed it was slightly bent and then I sent another drop and slightly after yea the metal spindle part snapped. I weigh about 240 lbs but I guess thats too much for them.

Finally a solid review!
I had the same rear hub issue. Its actually the freewheel that is the problem. After taking it in the second time they replaced it with an upgraded one! I would ask about this if you have issues and its still under warranty as I've had no problems whatsoever with the new freehub, has been on for a few months now. I recall the mechanic saying it was from a remedy(?) but I could be wrong.

That's just the way mine came. Personally I don't mind since I've never had internally routed cables and like to be able to easily mess with / tinker on my bikes. I'm sure it's not that complicated to work on internal ones, I just haven't tried lol. Did anyone elses 2019 Roscoes come with them ran internally? I know the 2020 does for sure.
That internal routing hole on the right side of the frame is for a front mech. There are small brackets inside the holes to stop the outer and only allow the inner to pass through.
What are your observations or other Roscoe owners observation of the large tires drag versus skinnier tires? Thinking if this one for my son so drag can be an issue...
Because of how much they soften bumps in the trail, I think it feels faster than my previous bike with 2.3 in tires.
Great review and great bike! I'm hesitating between the Roscoe and the X-caliber. We have a lot of technical, very narrow climbing segments where I live so I'm now sure if the + tyres are the way to go. What are your experiences on climbing with this bike?
The new 2021 xcal 7 29er is a fast and comfy ride. Both use same frames. You can put wider tires on xcal
I just wish it was 148 boost with a solid through axel. My only gripe.
true but there are enough good rims/ hubs you can convert it's near a non point minus some slight stiffness

Do you ever ride it on pavement or a bike path? I can ride to some trails but it’s a bit of bike path to get there and the trails aren’t too crazy. Not sure if i should get the x-caliber 7 or the Roscoe 7.
If you plan to do lots of paths and more mild trails... Honestly the x-cal may be better for you. I'd try to test ride both if possible first. The Roscoe is more geared towards somewhat playful/aggressive riding. Comfort would be better on the x caliber for what it sounds like you may be doing more of.
Would this bike be okay for a little bit of distance? I have some trails about 6 miles from my house. I'd like to be able to ride there and back and do some of the trails while I'm there. I thought maybe the 27.5+ might be too heavy for the roundtrip.
I've done rides close to 50 miles on this bike, and was totally fine. If I regularly rode long distance I'd invest in a more comfy saddle like something from ergon. But personally I've never had a stock saddle that didn't bother me some after 20 or so miles into a ride.
I have a 2020 Roscoe 7! Do you find the slack seat tube angle annoying at all? It’s the only major complaint I really have
On climbs, I kinda miss how my old bike felt a bit lol. But otherwise no. And really so long as you stay forward and put some pressure on the bars here and there it hasn't kept me from climbing everything I've attempted. The slack angles are totally worth the slight climbing trade offs when you start heading back down the hills! I like to throw a lot of body into my riding, hucking the bike around and pumping/jumping everything I can manage to. For that type of riding.. the slack angle totally works 👍
I am new to mtb and just bought the 2020 Roscoe 8. Do you have problems with the back wheel coming loose or off. Maybe I just don't have it clamped tight enough.
It's very likely that you don't have it clamped tight enough. It should take a decent amount of pressure to close it. Personally I would say if you're new to riding, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go to a shop and have them show you about what the sweet spot on tightness feels like. That way you can get it about right which will keep you safe, as well as keep you from overtightening it which can add wear and tear to your rear hub as well as slow you down.

I know this isn’t what you might want to hear, however, if I were you I would save some more money and get a Santa Cruz chameleon. I’ve ridden a lot of hard tails and the chameleon is by far the most capable most fun hard tail out there. I think starting price is somewhere right around 2k, trust me you won’t regret it. However, for under 1500 there are a ton of great options. Just my 2 cents.
might be a stupid question but we don't have that much trail here yet id still love to get a Roscoe for when I do hit them, how does it perform on the road? comparing to say a marlin or x caliber, or just in general
It's okay ish. Nothing just won't ride on the road, but it isn't really laid out for long drawn out seated pedaling in my opinion. It's totally doable though and the trade off is it's a total blast when you do actually get onto a trail.

Yup, the Roscoe 7 and 8 both come with a dropper pre installed!
Are those blue deathgrips? I tried ordering the blue for a build and got sent the gum. I couldn't find them anywhere a month ago. (nevermind, i got to the grip part lol)

hey man love your content!! do you think it is possible to get into dirt jumping, going to pumptracks and start getting air time and have fun in a dirt jump bike park or a skate park on a hardtail? (got a Trek Roscoe 8 2021, 27.5+ Size XL (I'im pretty tall ordered it kinda undersize for my heigt)) =D (I'm thinking about upgrading the handlebar, stem and the hubs later on as I get used to the bike)
Yup totally would work. As a matter of fact, for pump tracks and dirt jumps most people use hardtails specifically for those types of rising. As for the hubs, just use em and replace em if needed.

Excellent user review, thanks. Since you're so stoked about the Roscoe hardtail, now you need to do a serious ride on a full suspension to see if it moves the game on just as much. I have a MY 2000ish rock hopper comp with rigid forks that I am considering installing RockShox on, but after listening to this, it's probably just a waste of money. Money ahead by getting a new bike. Congrats on the bike, looks really nice! By the way, what tire pressures do you run?
Believe me once I can afford a good full sus (if that ever happens) I'll be on one haha. Maybe someday I hope! And for tire pressure on trails I shoot for 22 front and 25 rear with the tires in the video (keep in mind they're tubeless too). I weigh 225 and have never damaged a rim or broke a spoke on this bike running those pressures. Handles amazing. I've ran lower but I can feel the wheel wanting to pull sideways if I go lower so that's the pressure I've settled on for em.
Edit just to add: that's on super technical trails with loads of roots and rocks which are more my local-ish trails. When I've taken it to a park or places with my faster and more packed trails I bump them up by 4 or 5 psi each for less rolling resistance and to deal with harder hits.
I love the roscoe 8 Have it for 10 months now. But had to change the casette because i didnt change the chain on time. Also change the bottom bracket to a dub. Because the casette is not in stock because of corona I had to buy a whole group. Change the derailer also because it was kinda crooked, prob cus of stones. Anyways Its a really nice bike but if you rough it up it tears up quickly
I got rid of the cement mixer noise by just replacing the bearings in the hub. Nothing was pitted, but for whatever reason there was no noise after replacing them haha
Wow now that's the way to do it! Way cheaper than doing the whole wheel haha. I'm STILL running the stock one, cement noise and all. Still only audible when it's up on the work stand. Otherwise the tire noice drowns it out completely. When it finally gets too loud sounds like I'll try bearings first for sure!

Do you mean the 2020 Roscoe 8? If so yeah I'll be honest I'm not super crazy about the 2020 color scheme either. The Roscoe 7 in the stealth black looks pretty sweet though. I've always wished you could just buy any trim level of a bike in any of the color schemes offered lol. But yeah to answer your question, not big on the black and sunburst 2020 r8 scheme. It looks a little better in person than in pics though, so if you haven't seen it in person that MAY change your mind.
I've had a blast shreddin my 18 Coe 8 for the past two years. It's done just fine on everything from black diamond trails to park days and tons of urban freeride. I am disappointed Trek has chosen to raise the price on the Coe. Especially since they have chosen to stick with the qr rear. The best brake upgrade btw is to put a 203f and 180r. That's been a huge upgrade for sure! Cheers, and enjoy the ride!

Not really but I haven't read anything about it lol. It's exciting for anyone looking into it though if they can get people on a dropper for an even better price. Personally I'm not one of those people with the money to re-bike every year or two, so I haven't even looked. I just "shop" for fun for bikes that are way out of my current price range lol.

What tyre pressure do you run with plus size tyres ?
Like any it depends on weight, but I'd say average is around 20-22 psi. Tubeless I tend to run in the high teens even being a heavier rider at 225lbs. So definitely alot lower than more standard size mtb tires.
I put Hope Pro 4 hubs on my 2019 Trek Roscoe 8 and goodbye cement mixer sound! You just have to remember to buy the QR adapters. Upgrade to Bontrager Line Pro pedals! You can thank me later. The brakes are really just fine.

I agree with @Brad U on the Roscoe. It does have the slight issue with the hub, but like I mentioned in the video for many including myself, it's a small noise that causes no actual use issues. The noise isn't even audible when riding. Personally when mine goes out and I put something like a hope pro 4 on it, the total cost is still super competitive for the package even after that expense. I'd go for it!
@TIMOTHY MAMATI If you plan on doing mostly XC riding it is great. I was a lot faster on my Roscoe 8 in the tight stuff than my Pivot Switchblade.

I still have it actually, but haven't ran it in quite a long time now. Last time though it did still work but all of the suspension type parts are so worn now that it drives very sloppily, and parts aren't actually that cheap. So it would need like $50+ to drive close to new again, and because of that it's a hobby room decoration at this point. It way outlasted trucks I've spent more on though! Drove it a ton before it became a decoration lol.

Im debating on this bike or a stache or possibly a Specialized fuse comp 29.
I would say try and test ride this and a stache back to back if at all possible, or at least some trim of each (so you can feel out the frame geometry side by side). They are pretty different feeling bikes. The fuse is extremely similar. To me, picking the trek was partly due to my favorite bike shop deals trek, salsa, and all city. I considered the salsa Timberjack as well, but liked the slightly more aggressive geo on the Roscoe. They're all awesome bikes though for sure!
The Roscoe is much more jumpable and nimble than the Stache, at least in my opinion. It also feels strangely BMX-like on jumps. If you want something jumpable and nimble, go with the Roscoe. If you want a 29" trail hardtail go with the Fuse, and if you like epic backcountry adventures get the Stache. All are great bikes for money!

This is better if you can afford it. But if you're not sure just how committed you'll be to the hobby/lifestyle (lol).. the marlin is an awesome bike especially for the money. I know plenty of people who started on marlins. Heck some of them started on them almost 10 years ago and are still rockin em.

I hate the brakes on the roscoe 8. I broke my lever in the first week of having my 2020 roscoe 8. The levers have plastic shit inside that guides the mechanism. Brakes on the first crash. The better model shimanos have more metal in there.

It actually has rack mounts on it yes. You couldn't put much thinner tires on it though without also having to purchase more narrow rims. Your tires can't be more narrow than the rims they're being mounted on, and the Roscoe has decently wide stock rims. If you go in knowing that AND intend to also use the bike with the stock wheels and tires for trails and such too, I'd say go for it. Personally though if you are looking at buying a Roscoe entirely to swap for skinny / narrow tires and stuff I'd look at something different entirely. If you're settled on trek they have plenty of great bikes for more long rides and / or commuting type of stuff. Check out marlins or the Stache. Both are more comfortable too if you think you'll spend the majority of your time seated and just peddling away the miles. Hope this helps!

I am right on the line for most brands between their two largest sizes (including the Roscoe). I've always went the size up. It feels more stable and more like a feather light dirtbike rather than feeling too small and almost BMX'y.. if that makes sense lol.

Did the Roscoe 8 2019 come with 27.5" or 29" forks?
They're 27.5+ forks. So wider than a normal 27" or 29" fork in order to clear the plus tires, but will also fit normal 29" tires (different rims than stock would be needed though for the bead to sit correctly).

Great review but I honestly don’t think that comparing plus sized tyre hardtails to a full shock is very fair for the hardtail
I wasn't trying to compare them as in a direct performance comparison, more in a what your money gets you (assuming similar price). Really it's very fair for the hardtail since, for the price range, I believe you are WAAAAY better off with the hardtail. Just my opinion anyway 👍
I love my hardtail and I have used other peoples dual shock bikes and i can honestly say that I prefer the hardtail just because they are so aggressive and so fun.
Those hubs do really suck , but they will keep going , 50/50 chance the free hub goes .
Honestly..a full suspension bike is unnecessary unless your a real down hill lift rider I have a marlin 7 and a top fuel 7..they both will conquer anything both have done black diamonds.the top fuel is better but not that much better..that being said..the top fuel is a badge of pride and getting a full suspension is almost like telling the world your stepping up..I'll be honest..Its about looks most the time..but bombing a rocky decent is easier on a full suspension. .nice but unnecessary unless your a pro racer...
Does it have thru axle or QR?
Front is a 110x15 thru axle (it's the rockshox maxl), rear is QR boost 148mm spacing.

The rear is boost 141 spacing QR not 148x12. You can run a 10mm QR but need to change the wheels. SRAM run a 3mm offset chainring with boost bottom bracket spacing but to run the same chain line with a shimano bb you need the non boost version, this also changes your Q factor by 6mm total (narrower pedals and cranks).

Wow that's strange. Does the '19 Roscoe 7 and 8 share the same hub? I think they do.. if so then there's your proof right there that it's something odd in the hub manufacturing itself. Personally it doesn't bother me, but there is a small part of me that wants it to fully fail so that I have an excuse to get a loud hub like the Hope Pro 4 lol.
Just looked up the specs for both on treks website. They are both listed as the Formula DC2241 for the rear. So there ya go, common denominator is in fact the hub 👍
@@InconsistentTechDad I relaced my 2018 Roscoe rear hub with a Bontrager Rapid drive hub and did the upgrade of adding 3 additional pawls. Makes for a very nice sounding hub with lots of engagement.
