      @Jerry Rawlings A flat bar Roadbike (like Specialized Diverge Evo) is best for commuting. MTBs are heavy (due to suspensions) and the gear ratio is tuned for climbing, so you can't really pedal very fast. For instance, my road bike Ultergra drive chain has 52 teeth on the biggest chainring, 11 tooth on the cassette. And my MTB only has 30T-11T and twice the weight.

    I just bought my Roscoe 6 - i took 3 years off from biking, I used to live in Arizona and did alof of road biking but since moving to alaska a mountain bike seemed more fitting. Since i got my back last month I have only been able to do paved rides till snow melts, the resistance is no joke over time, i ride 20+ miles each ride and its a great workout pushing at full resistance

    I have a Roscoe 8 and a Marlin 5.
    I've been using both bikes for a year for commuting and now I am riding Roscoe 8 all the time.
    Mid fat tyre bike is just awesome so I also bought a Full Stache 8 bike not long ago.

      I have the trek fx 3 but I really want something with Suspension ( at least something that’ll feel like my fork won’t snap on a bad hop ) and fatty tires. My fx only fits 38 x 700 smh

    Great vid bro! I use my 29” full suspension to commute to work, gets the job done but even with the rear shock locked out.. it’s nowhere near as efficient as a hardtail!

    I love taking my Roscoe 8 down on the pavement through downtown and what not down here in Davenport. The one thing I can suggest for Comfort reasons is go to list it's a whole different ball game it rolls better your chance of a flat is half as much but otherwise I mean as far as a Roscoe goes yeah I like you said either lock it out or go to the highest compression setting and it pedals wonderfully. Like you man I love jumping on the bike and riding downtown and grabbing a bride or a beer you know who thinker and around then go hit the trails you know it's all good man this bike can do everything

  • @DrBunnee
    @DrBunnee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just something small that i realised. When cleaning the bike you might want to start with the frame because it is the least dirtiest part of the bike, then end at the wheels

    Been riding a mongoose malus with fat tires on trails and pavement.
    Tire pressure about 20-25psi
    Swapped the seat to a larger, fat butt, gel seat.
    I ride a lot of the trails sitting down.
    Swapped the factory cranks and 36t sprocket for a 2 speed 24t/38t crank and sprockets.
    I didn’t add a front derailleur.
    I usually keep ii on the 24t as I’ve found that I prefer the lower range.
    3rd gear is about equivalent to the factory first.
    It’s not a perfect bike or the best quality, but with the 2 easy modifications, I’ve found it to be a really fun and enjoyable bike for off-road and pavement.
    There are some off-road features and jumps that I avoid with this bike.
    But the majority of those I would probably avoid on any bike.
    I’m not surprised this Roscoe performs well on pavement.
    It’s been my experience that most off-road bikes cross over to pavement well with a tire pressure and perhaps a tire change if you have aggressive knobby tires.
    I rarely have any slide with the factory malus tires.

    Thank You, I’ve been wondering about how the Roscoe Series would be able to handle commuter style use. Your video and opinions are very helpful. I have the Trek 3500 and now I’m ready for a new mtb. I do enjoy riding the 3500 to an extent, I just don’t like the spring coil forks & the entire gear shifting system. I like the marlin series but what I want as far as a mtb in functionality, I’m leaning towards the Roscoe 7 it’s just i’m not sure yet on pulling the trigger. One of the key points I really like about the Roscoe is the drop saddle and the wider tires for better handling on the trails, unlike my 3500 which I’ve wiped out many times on the trail because the tires were to thin. I think the main thing I keep hearing bad about the Roscoe Series is that it’s not friendly on road conditions but I don’t care about speed really. I just want to be able to ride to the beach all the way to tackling some good trails to the extreme such as the Stagecoach 400 or the Impossible Route which both have some form of road travel included in the routes. Thanks Again 👍🏻😎

    • @BuggSmasher
      @BuggSmasher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Portland Rob - I've just checked the "Trek 3500'"s specs and your wheel profile is the same as my current ride , 26"x2.0".
      Anyway, I've just slapped down a deposit on a Roscoe 8, 2022 model, comes with 29er wheels x 2.6" tyres. I'm basically expecting more rolling resistance accordingly, but the larger tyres should also absorb a few extra bumps over the rough terrain. But keeping my 26" just because it's always been a nice cruiser with the thinner tyres. The other option is find a lower profile tyre to use in the city, and change back for weekend shredding !

    Check your local Aldi. They actually sell a folding bicycle stand that sometimes goes on sale for about $25. Get yourself a ton of brushes and picks too to get all the mud and dust that cakes up in all those hard to reach places. Degreaser helps too.

      Brad Bell yes. I was surprised to learn of it on Reddit but sure enough my local Aldi’s had a folding bicycle maintenance stand for $30. It’s pretty stable too. I use it to wash my bike in my driveway and then fold it and put it in the corner of my garage. It folds up to about the size of a beach umbrella.

    Looks like your Marlin 6 was the best street bike you can tell by watching your videos it was a little faster I was thinking about a Roscoe 7 but think I like the wider gear range on the 6 Its a good all round bike for a old man like me but if I was younger but I'd like a 1 x 12 for off-road but if I was younger I wouldn't ride all that crazy double diamond rock stuff thats made for a 4x4 truck with a good stereo and a cooler full of beer

    • @kwaktak
      @kwaktak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m an old guy too. I have a 2 year old Marlin 7 which is a 3x9 which is best for cross country riding up to 30mph but sticking to the middle 32t cog in the crank is the best for trail riding. The 2021 Marlin 7 is now a 1x10 and the rear derailleur has a clutch to keep the chain taut in rough terrain. They bumped the price tag up to $850.

    • @bradbell4055
      @bradbell4055 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I give 650 for my 6 buying accessories I already have 1250 in it and through buying yet I need a bike work stand a helmet and probley more tools like a torque wrench chain tools cleaning brushes the list and s never ending but it's worth it just for physical and mental health and it's very relaxing and fun I've had lots motorcycles but this is even better and a little cheaper

    hey matty, i have a rosco 7, and i have other bikes, and comuter bikes too. this aint no comuter bike. it is slow and alkward. awesome trail bike but thats it. no my trek fx/ or duel sport/ or marlin7/ are all worthy commuters. but to narrow it down. in this order as far as fitness and commutting goes. trek fx/ duel sport/ verve. i like the verve. i have a verve 3 and eventhough its a comphy bike. it is very fast and capable. i rode it yesterday and ave 13mph with all the city red lights and stops and hills. my road bike i only got 15 on this route due to all the stopping and starting. this verve 3 is so compfy and fast and versitle. i am going to use it as a touring bike. it really is the best one for comutting. as far as the rosco goes, you are asking an orange to be a lemon.the rosco is stricly a trail bike. i have been doing this for years now. go buy a verve and you wont regrete it

    I’m thinking about roscoe even tho they are super backordered. I hit trails/create my own trails from lack of sidewalks or paths here. If you don’t pay attention, you’ll end up in a ditch because the sidewalks just stop and dump you into the ditches which is about a foot high. I was suggested the x caliber 9 with 100mm travel fork but I’m not sure, would that be enough? I’m an aggressive rider (commuting and trail riding), but I don’t haul my bikes in a car (epilepsy) 😒
    Mad a Marlin 7 2019, sold it for $$. Only pavement I ride is intersections in the smallish city I live in.
    Sooo, cross country with 29 2.35 tires or a roscoe? Video looks like you were going pretty slow. I averaged about 12mph on my old Marlin but I’m not going coil fork this time. Didn’t last long for me. Nice video! Road bikes here are unavailable (backordered till next year!)! Plus road bike wouldn’t suit my needs. Lots of wet mushy tall grass riding, potholes everywhere, construction you get the idea hopefully. It will be definitely a commuter but also I love trails 🤘

    It would seem that the width of the handlebars would be a hindrance in the city. Giving room to peds to get around and by them like on the bridges and railed walkways. As far as the tires go, do you think 2.25-2.30 inch wide would be better?

      TheOutdoorLife thanks for watching! I would get the 7. The only reason I upgraded to the 8 is because I had a dropper post issue and my local bike shop said it would be a month before I could get it fixed. So they gave me a full refund towards an upgrade because they had no more Roscoe 7’s in stock

    I detail my car and one basic thing is when you just use wipes to ‘remove’ stuff, you are just dragging small bits of dirt and stones across your paintwork. Now mountain bikes get thrashed si doesn’t matter that much IMO but you could minimise it. Use multiple wipes to avoid transferring the dirty picked up crap against the top, shiny bits, that you want to keep looking good. Cheers for your uploads though man. Like your channel a lot.

    Dude, the biggest question I had was, “Will it kill me to ride long distances on asphalt/concrete”? Great video. In the beginning I thought, ‘ok, I’m getting a gravel bike’, I think I can get a good mountain bike now and be happy. Getting a good saddle sounds like a wise investment.
