I like the Golgari version of this deck for two reasons 1) Nothing feels more in the spirit of this event than running 4 Channels, 4 Demonic Tutors, and 4 Dark Rituals. 2) Phyrexian Fleshgorger can be both cheated out early with Channel or cast normally if your combo gets pulled apart. It's especially good in the mirror where they can't pay the ward to exile it with Ulamog, and it has menace to get past the indestructible creature. The lifelink has even let me have games where I've Channeled twice.
On an imaginative level i always imagine non-banned formats like this as being two wizards dueling each other using the most forsaken/evil of spells because of just how dangerous they are to wield to those untrained and the sheer apocalyptic destruction they would bring if unleashed. If they make a format like this it should be called "Forbidden."
I need a format where it's *only* banned cards. You want to use something that's merely good? Out of luck. It has to be terribly, terribly broken to even make it into your deck.
One of the best decks against Channel are the various Grixis variants. Thoughtseize, Inqusition of Kozilek, and Spellpierce do a lot of leg work of course, but getting to play Bolts, Ragavan, and Mishra's Bauble are nice too. I really enjoy the Lurrus/Death's Shadow lists. I've won plenty of games keeping 1 landers, on the draw or play. And weirdly, lost a lot of games because of my own bad choices that I could have sequenced better to win: not as many non-games as you'd expect.
I would absolutely *love* more events like this in the future. Running altered banlists or other wacky rules while allowing players without huge collections to participate. It’s a fun way to spice up the late stage of an expansion while also letting players experiment with decks they may have only heard of from other people.
This format has been so fun for the few hours I've played it just to try out stuff ive never been able to play before because the cards were banned and I didn't own them. Other fun decks to try are Madness with Hollow One, faithless looting, ragavan and lightning bolt, and also rakdos storm with dark ritual and demonic tutor

i have a question , i you have protection from everything, does it mean ulamog can't attack ? you'd still need to sac permanents right ? or doesnt he have annihilator
I actually beat a Channel deck with my Persistent Petitioners deck 12 hours before the event ended. I went first, dropped a petitioner on turn 2. My opponent dropped Hope of Ghirapur turn 1, then Channel and Ulamog on turn 2 and exiled my 2 lands. Luckily, I had a 3rd land and Unsummoned the Ulamog turn 3 and pinged him for 1 damage. He then played Demonic Tutor, Channeled again and paid 4 life for Karn, grabbed Shadowspear, but couldn't equip it until next turn. I just pinged him every turn and Unsummoned Hope of Ghirapur after it was equipped. He then grabbed The One Ring but didn't play it, and finally conceded when he was down to 2 life.
Field of the dead bant flavor beats this most games. Uro, oko, bounce spells. Once they pop that's all they have. Use the 5 drop green sorcery that tutors 2 deserts aka field of the dead. Then scapeshift. You can also run lil tef. Deck is the nuts and if you make it to turn 4 you win.
I'd like to imagine it becomes like that one video where the guy runs all the chancellors of the dross to win turn 0, where it breeds all these weird kooky decks.😊
The meta for this format has been interesting. Rock hard control, Channel Eldrazi, and Rakdos Ragavan kill you ASAP seem to be the big three contenders so far. I've been trying to modify the Channel deck to combo kill with Aetherflux Reservoir the turn you Channel to improve the winrate. The issue, naturally, is that you need more pieces. Even with Demonic Tutor, it's not consistent enough with the variations I've tried. We'll see with some time. I'd love to see your take on it in the format. EDIT: Well. Looks like people already figured it out by doing Realmbreaker things. Plus your Karn lock is very close. Also, while it's almost impossible to pull off and not reliable at all, you can T1 Channel with Dark Ritual and Chromatic Orrery. It's not good. At all. But it's fun when you do it.
Already got an aetherflux list, most consistently wins on turn 3, but with a channel in opening hand it's still a turn 2 kill. I've given up on trying to tech for channel mirrors, it's almost just a coin flip on who goes first. If they get Emmie then they can use your channel to kill you on the spot. The Guild Globes also let you cast them. Meteor Golem is for any weird match up or if opponent gets a Karn down. Portal is for Eldrazi when they don't win immediately and you can't for some reason combo off. Staff of Completion is actually a house in this deck and can often times be the better pick out of the board besides the one ring since you can untap it without Paradox Engine. The pro of this deck is that the turn you channel you almost always win. And not making opponent conceded either. Fiddled around with the list for a few hours and it did work. Good win rate, just not against mirror. The draw back of the Eldrazi is if you get a bad draw you can get got by a swords to plowshares or other removal. This deck gets around that. The only draw back I've had is that my kills are some times just a turn too late in mirror.
I used the no-ban historic event to try out standard legal decks with cards that I wanted but didn't have. So obviously my deck would be very weak in comparison to those banned-card focused decks. I got up against one who kept copying a spell that would give an extra turn. Then at some point when I had only 2 lifes left, and the opponent could finish me off and win, he/she instead decided to make infinite turns. Opponent having a card to put cards from graveyard back to the library, which was copied as well. And the copy spells got copied 😂 Up until that match I had a principle of never reciding a match (I only started playing mtg 3 weeks ago). But after about half and hour with the opponent having 53 turns in que, I then decided to recide. And everytime an Opponent would cast Ulamog in other matches, I would recide as well. I didn't use the format for it's intented use, so that's on me 😅
I like the turn 2 wins speed to get daily wins. Not spending 2 hrs a day on the game is nice when you have other things to do. I splashed black to stop others who go first and it didn't miss a beat. Arena hates me though so my win rate is more like 35% :-P

You CAN cast Channel on T1. Play an Island. Cast Tormod's Crypt - counter it with An Offer you Cast Refuse, giving you two treasures. Cast Channel. Let the good times roll.
In no bans historic, why not run Emrakul, the Aeons Thorn? its not counterable, you get an extra turn, and annihilator at round 2 means they're never getting a board - AND it has protection from coloured spells.

I didn't even purposely build a deck or meta game for the the format, I basically added counterspell and Memory Lapse to a Historic deck I've been playing. By the weekend the channel decks got wise to being blown out by thoughtseize and inquisition of Kozilek and started adding themselves.

This deck is absolutely opponent balls destruction 👍If you ask Wizard of the coast about what they smoked while creating such cards (we see what would happen to the game without bans)))
There's some craziness that shouldn't ever be legal in Historic generally but I've been having a lot of fun with a Grixis deck that goes really long and is structured to just hose the go-for-it turn 2 combo wins while having really solid go-long support.
Could someone explain with rules to me what happened at 16:40 ? Why is he able to pay life for the Eldrazi? There is nothing that has mana abilities except two already TAPPED lands on the board... Am I missing something?
The whenever you could activate a mana ability timing on Channel doesn’t mean you have to have other mana abilities to activate, it’s just wording that makes the timing be the same as tapping a land for mana

That’s what channel does. For the rest of the turn, you can pay 1 life to add a colourless mana, any number of times. That’s why it’s banned.

I went into this event with a Simic Flash Oko pile and beat this deck game 1, got my 1000 exp and didnt look back!
