- In this longer video I’m back on the #BasicBuild series and making three #drawers to fit into our storage #cubes and just to make life interesting I'll be doing it without a tape measure or a ruler. Enjoy!

As an apprentice joiner 37 years ago, I was taught "never measure when you can mark" and you have just demonstrated that in a practical example 👍
I own a router, but not a router table so far. So yes, it would be of interest to see a basic router table build.
Definitely would be interested in a backyard beginner friendly router table!

Exactly right. If only the kids (and older!) could get past, "there's an app for it". Halving, quartering, triangulating, rollers and levers are all so simple and deceptively helpful.
I’ve a feeling I’ll keep coming back to these videos as a reference. Really enjoying this ‘lateral’ approach as it gives me ideas of how I might approach projects with my limited skill set and tools. Thanks Peter.

@@10MinuteWorkshop I stumbled upon you page on TH-cam and have a very similar, albeit larger space in my basement. Although I do have space in my detached garage, it is not heated and in NYS USA it’s not good in the winter. Do you do any work with dimensional lumber using a track saw?
Wow! First, paper templates and story sticks are the way to go. With them there is no question about measuring systems or questioning which side of the line… Second, the way you use a tracksaw is incredible. Typically I see others use them for breaking down sheet goods which I feel any circular saw and guide are good enough for. The things you do really brings into question the need for a tablesaw in the small woodworkers shop. Thanks for the great content, I look forward to all your builds.

You are absolutely right about table saw - TH-cam woodworkers who made it are doing major disservice to beginners making it look like track saw is not good enough.

Really like this video using basic tools to do the job very accurately. IMHO track saw and palm router build series would be awesome. Assume folks do have tape and the ruler. Include dowel jig or use screws for assembly.

I would say to any aspiring woodworker - DO get a tape measure and ruler!!😉 Like what you've done here though Peter. Great way of demonstrating ways of gauging, sizing and templating. They look really cool too which is a bonus.👌
Cheers Stew! Oh goodness yes, use a tape & ruler! It's just that I get loads of comments and questions - as I'm sure you do too - from folks new to the hobby asking wether they should save up and buy e.g. the Woodpecker ruler, or would the Benchdogs one be 'good enough' and in reality either of those rulers are going to be more precise than 99% of new woodworkers can manage. I just wanted to get across the idea of referencing off the material and the workpiece to get those measurements close. 👍 And yeah, really pleased with the colours! 😆 I feel a Mondriaan-inspired side-table coming on... 😃

This is a great presentation. The folding paper trick is neat. The more projects I build, the more measurements become subjective. Sure I start with a plan including dimensions, but those become more like guidelines quickly. Well done.

An excellent training video. In have been woodworking since 1972 and have only seen a few videos of this quality. Just awesome. Reminds me of building a high chair for our first child 30 yrs ago using a leather dog leash to measure a high chair while we ate a pizza restaurant.

Thanks for this Peter, these are great, and there is a lot of really useful technique in this build. It really proves that far from being a work around, dispensing with making measurements and instead using templates and shims etc can not only produce a more accurate result but also lead to fewer errors !
Thanks, yes - I have a fancy Talmeter tape-measure that had a little extension for internal measurements, but mostly I use it as 'two sticks on a roll' and don't actually refer to the measurement, just reference off the length between the ends. 👍
Good work, does show what can be done with brains. All sorts of things have been made without access to accurate measuring equipment. Add a bevel gauge and you do a whole lot more too!

It looks like you're using PVC pipe for bench dogs. That's a great idea and if you cut into them there's no damage to the blade.

Great video and build with a lot of tips but my favourite is wedging the sides with a stick to prevent glue scraping off! I've often ended up using my elbows and teeth to do that!

Just brilliant.
Clever idea! I do things like this quite a bit, as audible tape measures and tactile rulers are only accurate to a millimetre at best and I want to achieve accuracy to within a 10th of a millimetre for most of my projects. There are a lot of materials and objects in the workshop that can be used as size references when necessary, but I've never thought of using strips of paper.

outstanding!!! being a printer, the folding in half is an old trick the find center on printing letterhead... fold and hold it up to the light and see if your print is "centered"....

Definitely need a simple router table. I have an old Black & Decker single speed with only a 1/4 inch collet but I know it would be much more useful upside down for simple shaker panel doors.

Excellent work - I'd love to see you do something similar using just a circular saw or other similar tool that a real beginner/diyer might have. Also clearly I need to buy more clamps!
Thank you. The whole idea behind this series is that I use a minimal and entry-level toolset; this tracksaw cost £80 - not much more than most basic circular saws, and I’d recommend one over a circular saw all day long unless the beginner had some particular use case in mind. 👍

Love it. Thanks Peter. Had to slow the video down to get the gist as I’m still a newbie. I really love the technique for cutting the rebates on the drawer fronts. Obviously don’t have your equipment but there must be another way to clamp it to something else so that I can still cut with a circular saw. I think you can cut rebates with a planer. I have one but haven’t worked out how to do that yet. I’d love a table saw but that may be several Christmas and a birthday gifts away 😅

A palm router is best tool for small shop to do rabbets and grooves.
I've already purchased my MacAllistar track saw. Ready to build some slide out drawers for the space under my stairs, using techniques gleaned from many of your videos.
However, dowels, biscuit joints and screws will have to suffice...a domino cutter is way out of my budget for home DIY.

You're a track saw wizard, Peter 😂. Router table build would be decent, I've just got a Triton tra001 to build into a table and even though there's a tonne of build videos on the tube, it's never a bad idea to see what someone else might bring to the table.

I see how the sticks set the spacing between drawers. But how is the spacing set on the sides of the drawers, or rather the perimeter of the box? Do you make the runners proud of the groove?
When I see what faboulus furniture you are doing with such a limited set of tools I think that I have to improve my skills much more to make good use of all my tools I already own…

In the same spirit of paper templates: if you want to carry over markings from one piece to another without measuring, but can't do that by putting one on top of the other for some reason, just photocopy your reference piece and use the paper print on the piece that needs to be marked.
"This is a cube on its side" . . . as Euclid slowly rotates in his coffin :-) To be fair, it could have been on its edge but you know what I mean.

+1 for the router table build. Just to add a little spice, how about a build with a budget router? The Bauker 2100w routers were on ebay recently for £36, pretty good value for a reasonably powerful 0.5" router. I'd love to see how you'd link budget components together to produce something hopefully very usable.

Perhaps if I can add another dimension - how about using budget materials only? Birch ply is pretty unaffordable these days, so a budget router table project might be more appealing if it's constructed from lower grade materials from the likes of Wickes and B&Q.

Measuring stuff has long been my Achilles heel. I avoid rules tapes and numbers when at all possible. Rods, dividers, templates etal, lead to far fewer workshop missile launches.

Is that coloured mdf moisture resistant? And is it much more expensive than regular one? Thanks!
I don't believe it's moisture resistant, but check with Finsa UK as they'll have the spec & data sheets for it. 👍 When I bought it for my benches it was about £170/sheet, but the sheets are big, 2850 x 2100 so almost twice the area of a regular board.

As I say in the video, the rebate in the fascia acts as a stop against the drawer runners. 👍

4:12 what is the thickness of the runner.
Doesn’t really matter as long as it’s less than the thickness of the rebate. I used a 5mm domino as the gauge for the 6mm rebate. 👍

FYI - dave stanton didn't invent those Dog Locks, Sauter shop sells them and they can be found 3D printed on eBay, all before david made his, he won't admit that thou.
A point I made when I reviewed the Sautershop Variobench. But the sautershop 'bench hooks' as they call them only fit the sautershop benchdogs, which are an oddball size. The Dave Stanton doglocks fit regular benchdogs, or even plastic conduit as used here. FYI 👍

While the video is interesting I'm not really sure who it is aimed at? No ruler but bench dogs, a track saw and forstner bit of the right size? Surely people are likely to have a cheap router as they are a track saw yet you've stopped from using one. It does show the basics I guess. If someone has never knocked a bit of wood together EVER they are going to have to buy some tools. I'm not sure a track saw would be my first buy but then I don't know. Surely a circular saw and a steel rule would do at a push? How about a decent handsaw, chisel and a mallet (plus ruler and pencil). I like the marking out for some things don't get me wrong, but it is going a bit far when we don't measure the height of the finger hole. Oh well you'll have your reasons I assume.
Go back and start at the beginning, where I make a bench in my back yard with a tracksaw and drill.
