    Really dig the way those boxes were constructed. Using a rebate/dado to attach the faces is an economic and aesthetically pleasing solution. Building drawers that way would be fantastic. I’ve always thought it was a silly waste to make a drawer box then add another layer of face wood to the front. You’re method reduces the amount of material used, is strong and looks very good. Loving the basic build series!

      Thank you! There are other benefits to fitting a drawer fascia of course - ease of alignment being the main one from an installers point of view - but I do like this approach, with the rebates. 👍👍

      Thanks! You’re not the first person to ask about tracksaw dovetails, so it may be something I need to investigate. Needing a set of battery-powered tools for occasional use I went with Ryobi. They get more than occasional use now, but are never abused. I bought their battery-powered brad nailer after much deliberation, my only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. I still enjoy the tactile experience of panel pins and hammer, but it is good to have the choice. I also bought an entry-level track saw (I was going to go for Makita, but was put off by some negative reviews on the tracks). You have now convinced me that a track saw can be a precision tool. Once again, great to have choices: router, router table, table saw, track saw, hand tools. The best thing about multiple options is that you can set up your router, table saw and track saw for various processes in a job, and complete it with zero or minimal setup changes, giving consistent results.

    I bought my MacAllister track saw after watching your videos. I use it too infrequently to stump up for the bigger brands, and replaced the blade with a Freud laminate blade. Works for me. One thing I found was the saw was binding in the track sometimes on longer cuts, so I removed 2 of the guides in the saw base.
    Still excellent neat cuts & much better than on the table saw. Benefits from rubbing an old candle on the saw base too.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop

    The admonishment to check front & back measurements came a day too late for me. I was making some rolling storage from ply and the back of the opening was smaller than the front so the first box jammed just before it got all of the way in... Thankfully it was the first of five and it went in nicely to one of the other openings and I learned the lesson.
    The idea to use the track saw with the piece clamped to the side of the bench was brilliant....I may have to steal that one.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Peter, I noticed the variable depth cuts that you had here when making the rebates on the front panels. I had this a few years back ( when I had an economy track saw ) and put it down to flex in the body/base/hinge of the saw allowing the blade to drop slightly more into the wood. Since buying a better one I haven't had cause to try similar cuts and wonder if you had tried this with other saws.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’ll always get a slight variation unless you use a flat ground blade, and obviously the entry-level saw are less well engineered than the higher end so the effect is more pronounced with them. 👍

    I've been considering upgrading to a Festool track saw (from my 'love-it' Makita) in order to do some finer work but notice you used the more modest MacAllister saw for this project. I've concluded that, before upgrading my saw, I'm going to upgrade my worksurface and engineer a set up similar to yours. I suspect my current saw would meet my needs if I had the ingenious setup you've built. The dog/clamp holes and vertical track work really well and show what can be achieved even with modest tools when the set-up is right. Thanks.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is part of the ‘basic builds’ series, so entry-level tools only. I use Festool for preference, but also have Makita; I prefer the Festool, personally, it’s a step up IMHO, but all the saws I have will do the basic job of cutting a straight line. 👍

    You should have raided the laundry from some plastic pegs to hold the various nails as you hammered them in to start. Saves a lot of bruised fingers & blackened fingernails. Also, looking at the amount of setting up for using the track saw to do the second cut on all those rebates I would have thought even a blunt chisel would have knocked them off very quickly, followed up with a sharp chisel for the final shave.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As always, these things take far longer to explain in a video than to actually do, and in practice the setup time for the edge cuts was minimal - and once done, all 15 were cut within a minute or so. If you think the chisel route perfect rebates is the way to go, then there’s nothing stopping you, but this is a basics build, and assumes a modest skill set to go along with the modest tool set. 👍

    Hi Peter. Since becoming self employed I've found your videos so helpful and inspiring. Especially when it comes to your fitted wardrobes and your loose tenon shaker doors. One question though what make of PVA wood glue are you using? I'm having trouble tracking some down. I don't like using the 5 minutes expanding glue it ends up getting messy, so I've been using standard PVA but that does take a while to go off. Cheers

      Hi Chris and thanks! It’s a fast-grab (10Minute !) PVA; I’ve used all kinds and have never found much difference between them, though I tend to go towards Polyvine PolyTen as I can get it in 5 litre bottles. 👍

    A few years ago I noticed how many Ikea 'Moppe' CD storage drawer sets were on Gumtree etc. I refitted my workshop storage with them for a few pounds a pop, cheaper than I could buy the timber even then. Alas my fixings store outgrew them and I moved to used plastic storage bins, just not as classy.

    Great video series as usual. Your camera placement is just superb as well as your audio. Question, would this project have been any easier with the all Festool tools you have used for years? I have bought quite a few Festool products based on your videos so I am just curious. I am very happy with my Festool purchases. Be aware that Baltic Birch plywood is all but impossible to purchase here on the left side of the pond. Would your project have changed with a cheaper plywood with only 3 to 5 layers? Thanks

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Easier? No, but more comfortable, and with much better dust collection! This video's from May last year, before the Birch ply drought, but as I say in the vid I'm recycling bits and pieces of old / rejected loose tenon jigs that I've already paid for! Now *That's* an expensive way to get Birch ply!😂 👍

    Wanted to say thanks Peter, my 1st track saw arrived today - ready to attempt to build some benches for our dining room. I see you using tape sometime to hold the wood together as the glue binds. I dont have a nail gun yet to drive home the pins and only have a couple of clamps. Is there a particular type of tape you'd recommend for this - or even a cheap nailer? Thanks again - I have been consuming SO many of your track saw videos and content these last few weeks.

    I'd say the bent nail was less about technique and more about the terrible quality of pins available now, most of them have completely offset heads.
