I’m a psychiatric nurse in the US. I took some time off this year because I was ill with fatigue, falls, and seizures. I got diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder related to trauma in my work and my past. I’ve been doing EMDR and the majority of my symptoms resolved, but I was still having “kickbacks” where one or two symptoms would come back when activated. It would be for an hour at a time, and I would be at work running a fever, blood pressure high, so it was very uncomfortable. I came across Feldenkrais while reading up on somatic therapies, looking for something to help, and then came to your videos. I can say this as someone who leads groups in my workplace, you are a) an excellent teacher. I can follow your videos and they make me smile b) your series is practical for a busy life and I can pick it up whenever. As to my symptoms, they’ve mostly resolved and I’ve seen my episodes reduce in the two weeks since I started following your videos. Last week I was able to cry through a panic attack instead of maintaining a fever, and got through it faster (baby steps, panic attacks are actually an improvement if you can imagine lol). Not to mention I just have a better “feeling” of my body all around. The lessons make me feel giddy and aware. I look forward to having “me time” every other day or so and rolling around on the floor :)
I just want to thank you for this video series and for helping me over an ocean. I’m truly getting better “day by day” 😁

I'm working my way through this series for the 2nd time now. The first time I did this lesson, I wasn't able to get much out of it, but after doing this again last night, my lower back feels so free. I can feel my abdominal muscles and how they are supposed to help support my body and how the support frees my chest and upper body. I've completely lost touch with my body from years and years of sedentary work, body shame, and chronic pain. These lessons are helping me learn to feel comfortable existing in my body again. Thank you so much Alfons for putting these lessons together and sharing them. I've never felt such joy in my body before.

Thank you so much for these free videos. I suffer a lot from back pain and neck pain because of desk work. I practice zen retreat. Your method seems very similar in the awareness of body connection and movement. After this video when I stand up again, I feel so free and so light. It's wonderful.

My body felt like it was rocking on my hips at the end when standing - like the hip joints and vertebrae were so relaxed they didn't need to be tense to hold me upright. Very nice feeling - the Feldenkrais float. Thank you.
I also notice a stiffness in my lower and upper spine the morning after some of these lessons. It may be nothing to do with the lessons, but I suspect that the more I do Feldenkrais, the more my body releases old tensions as it re-adjusts to new ways of moving, and tensions that I would previously deal with through stretching, yoga or more more vigorous movements that I do each day. I may be wrong, but either way, I find it interesting.

Alfons, Mary here. :) -You are hilarious & I totally felt like falling asleep myself at the end of that! When touching right elbow earlier on toward the right knee, I could feel a tightness & what felt like a trigger point on the point of right shoulder. It went away a bit afterward & I could feel that muscle weakness. But when I was done, I felt like I should win the award for "fastest rolling yo-yo", as when I stood up, I felt like I was more stacked but yet flexible-stacked. haha! Have a spectacular day-I know I will! :)

Hi Alfons! Just a quick note to say thank you so much for all the work you put into sharing these teachings. I've always been curious about Feldenkrais and after hearing you on a podcast recently I immediately came to your channel and tried it out for the first time. Have now been incorporating your videos into my daily movement practice and I can already feel huge shifts in happening in my body awareness. I come from a place of efforting so much whether it's yoga, work or just going about my daily life and this has soothed my nervous system like nothing else in addition to reminding myself it's ok to take time, be intentional and feel GOOD when we're using our bodies to do something.. i could go on, but I'll end my little positive rant here! Look forward to continuing my exploration of this method.

Many discoveries with this lesson... hard to feel the vertebrae in my neck.. like one "block" and I was astonished when you said to rest your neck on the floor.. my neck is pretty far from the floor, probably from years of jutting the head forward, and also rounding the chest. I'm very interested to see if/how this changes as we move along. Thank you for your wonderful humor, all the effort of this, and how spontaeous you are with language.. exploring there, too, as words emerge from your mouth and you "taste" them and explore whether there are other ways to say what you are wanting to say. I've been on the Buddhist path for over a decade and this is so compatible, and also such a help for being in the body!! Much gratitude, Susan

Hi there & greetins from Canada! :) I just found your channel this evening...it’s pure awesome! *Do you have therapies for the thoracic spine? I am getting spinal decompression for C 5/6 & 6/7 (DDD) and after this traction treatment, my chiropractor tries to loosen my mid-back (with manipulation) but to n avail. I am very tight and very, very sore. I also have degenerated discs in my lumbar (3 discs) but not receiving treatment for the lower right now. Just the neck...I have a numb left arm b/c of the neck discs but it has somewhat improved after 18 treatments with the DRX 9000 traction machine. *My concern right now, is my left shoulder and scapular area is burning with pain and that mid-back seems to not ‘crack’ or loosen. He says the muscles in the mid-back are so tight. I am a 51 year old female and just want to be ‘soft’ again. Your channel, I so hope, will help with that! :) ps...I’m pretty flexible, but ironically, my back is ‘hard as a rock’. TY so much! I so hope you find this message!

Dear Kathy, this question is a great starting point for diving into the literature of language, psychology and philosophy! 🤓☺️ A lot has been written in the past 50 years on these topics and I find it quite exciting. I'm not sure if there's anything significant about this in the sparse Feldenkrais related literature.

I'm wondering if there are variations on these movements that don't involve putting my hands behind my head? Hi Alfons. So, I've hit a sort of wall here. When I do this one I feel worse particularly in the groin/tops of thighs around hip joint, where there is pain anyway. Have tried doing less, but there is something about going in that direction - forward towards knees - that irritates what is already going on. Any suggestions? AND Thank You for you great work on these TH-cam videos and making this available to those of us out in the hinterlands!

    • @ImprovingAbility
      @ImprovingAbility  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Susan, don't think of these lessons as exercises. They are not exercises. If you found a limitation (or "wall") that's actually already an achievement, and you need to honor that. Don't try to push the wall. Instead continue with another lesson. Be gentle to yourself, go slow, small, make yourself comfortable, enjoy your movements, explorations, your experience and learning (and the moments when you feel stuck). There's hundreds of lessons, I just present a few. Finish this series first, and maybe later come back to this lesson.

Hi Alfon.. I got diagnosed 3 years ago with PTSD.. I still go into fight or flight .. I know the feldenkrais is so good for reconnecting with one's self.. I can alway feel my spine or certain areas you mention. Is this normal ..

My head felt lighter by the end of it, more fluidity in between my shoulders. :)

Great movement sequence, thank you. Does the lesson foresee to contract the belly while lifting the head or should we only work with shoulder/chest/arm muscles?

focus on the movement, movement quality, your experience etc, not on the muscle action. Maybe like this: when you write an email you focus on what you want to express, and how you want to express it, how you feel about it etc. you don't put your main focus on your computer hardware or software

Sometimes after a lesson, I find I become very tired and often fall into a deep sleep. Is this part of my Feldenkrais process? It is like falling into another universe.

I also experience that, so do many others. It seems like there’s another coastline too, that once we are rested enough we become active again. I heard a few explanations on that phenomenon, maybe it’s best to do your own research because on this topic I can only quote people who already quote others and who knows the sources...

Hi Alfons, thank you for all the videos! I have recently discovered the FT and am very excited by it. I am a little bit confused about the exercises where one limb helps lift another..I have been practising lifting the head with the arms by trying to let the arms take all the weight of the head so I can feel what it is like to move the head with out activating the neck muscles and this has been useful- however it requires a strong effort in the shoulders so I am wondering if really I should just be assisting the neck muscles by using the arms- making it easier for the neck but not completely disengaging the muscles of the neck...the same for the hip exercise- I gained a lot from making the hip completely passive..but not completely sure I have the complete picture. Any advice will be highly appreciated. :) Joe

Hi Joe, trying to lift the head (or any limb) without helping with the neck/spinal muscles is a movement variation, to get to know ourselves better. I agree to me it also feels quite "funny" and heavy. I think it's not very "functional", just something to try and play with. However, It seems to be a save thing to do, and gives us something to talk or even debate 😅 I myself like to switch between vastly different modes of lifting during these movement explorations, the differences are striking. Great to hear you like my videos, Welcome on board! Alfons

@@ImprovingAbility thanks for getting back to me and welcoming me aboard Alfons :). I interpret the movement of the head or a limb by another as a way of seeing what muscles habitually contract- and how we may inhibit them consciously and perhaps later this will become a new habit making our movement more easeful. Does this resonate with you?
