i own 2014 GX 460 , i have been putting regular fuel since brand new , because the Lexus tech to told me i can put regular unleaded fuel but i just get less horse power, and regular maintenance and have no issue , engine runs smooth and no knocking noise so far
Is the 2014 the facelift? Looking for one at auctions not sure if i need the latest i prefer the body lines but a good bumper helps. Not sure if a 2012 and 2014 are completely different animals
Another plus - it's made in Japan at their best facility (forgot the name) for both Toyota and Lexus for a long time (4 Runner is made their as well). You're getting the best of the best at this facility - best engineers, best suppliers, best assemblers etc.
As a GX owner for years, I always wished they made a “TRD Pro” type model for the GX with a high clearance front bumper, slight lift with Fox shocks, more aggressive tires & wheels and no 3rd row seats to save weight. Since these aren’t cheap rigs it would be nice not to have to mod it right away for off-road use. It looks the new gen one will fix that, though

Here in Germany we are converting our v8 to lpg autogas. It's not gasoline but liquid gas and its half the price of gasoline. I got it in my bmw v8 aswell. And looking at the priceshock that was a smart idea 3 yeats ago. And most American v8s that are Imported run on it. Most of tokios taxi fleet. Most of then are toyotas aswell
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD the consumption increases by around 10 %. But co 2 output goes down by 30%. But we have lpg on every second gasstation. The real kings of lpg are the polish. I think 70 or 80 % of they're cars run on it

Just bought one of these beauties. Unfortunately my 2016 RX F Sport was deemed a total loss (don't you love when other drivers dont pay attention to the road? Yeah.. me too 😑) BUT... with my insurance pay-out i was able to nab a 2018 GX460. I am in total awe of the fact that this beast out did my previous F Sport. I thought the RX was my favorite car that I've owned. After driving the GX for a mere 5 days, I realized how much BETTER this beautiful monster is... ...It's going to be even better when I turn up the engine noise by a few decibels 😁
We have a gx 470 and a gx 460. I can attest that these videos of the gx going on some fairly technical terrain is not camera magic or Some bs. This is real. The A-TRAC works!

We live in the Colorado mountains and I was thinking of getting an older 3rd gen (2010-15) AWD RX but my wife wanted a GX. A used 2013 GX460 showed up that drove like new because it had 21k miles so we got it. It is a beast. I hope the pro that it never gets stuck is true. That means I won't have to snowblow the driveway to escape.
I had the opportunity to drive a LC Prado in my family's home country that has awful streets and roads and terrifyingly reckless drivers on all kinds of vehicles. The LC was a tank. Torque and acceleration to drive in chaotic stop and sprint traffic was amazing and so was the comfort. If I had to live in that country I would own that or a Hilux. I think I will buy one of these as my retirement vehicle since I live in a mostly rural northern state. Shame on Toyota USA for not bringing their diesels here to the states! Great review my friend!

We also commute longer and have a wider range of off-road situations in America. I love my 19 GX and its V8 engine. We use it off road occasionally but also tow a 17 foot RV trailer. The V8 power is nice to have when towing! Also, I've put a set of Dobinson springs that gave me a little over an inch of lift and also installed BFG 265 65 AT tires which are an inch taller than stock. Also increased the payload some to help with the tongue weight of the trailer. Overall I think its set up perfect for what we do.

Hands down just a tune being the first thing before mods is the best money you cam spend, better throttle tip in and gear changes and from there maf calibrator and washables filter and decent exhaust later. 4Runner for sure, better angles back window rolls down, 4x4 system , practical, its just a far better experiences all around too. If you ad supercharger youre having fun but really a 700.00 tune by itself you're having fun and getting better mpg.
Lexus should keep the V8 AND offer the new engine as an option. " Don't throw out the baby with the bath water." Dumping the ICONIC V8 is a BIG mistake.

As a Pros I would add how last long this vehicle can live (with the proper service) and for the dated infotainment system, I found a very great solution (don’t want to ad anything) that added to my car a wireless Apple car play navigation and solved 90% of all my issues (also it was very easy to install by myself).

Again I don't want to advertise some product, but here is what I have and how I installed it: 1. I bought Grom V-line2 unit with navigation (latest hardware). It's a bit expensive (~$600) but it is 100% worth it. 1. I used a Step-by-step installation video from Sami (on his "DIY Speed garage" youtube channel). It's super easy to follow. 1. I also placed my unit under the central console. 1. important-1! I placed the unit right under the front air tube (of the central console) to cool it effectively. (I played with different locations and this place is the best). 1. important-2! This unit has connectors from both sides :(, it was super inconvenient and it's very important to make sure that wires and not *pinched or *broken or ... (I don't know the right analog of *the russian words "заломленый провод"). 1. That's literally it. It's super stable (it hung before a couple of times because of the problem with the wrong unit placement), you can disconnect-connect the battery and it will work, and it is 100% wireless in turms of connecting to my phone and intuitively knows which device to connect to (I share my truck with my wife and she is also very happy with it). 1. I didn't install the USB cable on the dash (as Sami did, it's not necessary), but I still have it plugged into the unit (just in case) and concealed under the dash panel for easy access. The whole process is relatively safe to DIY and took about 2 hours MAX. I can email pictures of the process and answer more questions.

Hi! All the steel crap definitely weighs it down... I would recommend aluminum honestly for all skids. The bumper is a pig and I wish it was aluminum. The sliders are steel but they weight is distributed evenly... don't recommend Victory sliders.. please try another brand instead ❤️
I own a 2008 120 Prado here in Panama, and it has the 2.7 2TR-FE 4 cyl. from the Tacoma. The 120 Prado weighs about 4000 lbs., which is probably 1000 lbs. less then the GX460, and I get 16.8 mpg U.S. in the city, and 19.2 mpg U.S. on the highway. Which, may be equal to, or maybe less than , the GX460. Plus, the GX has twice the horsepower and three times the torque. So for me, I may be looking for a GX460, but all of them are imported to Panama from North America, so you have to make sure you get a good one. We get the Prado and the Land Cruiser 200/300.
Just found this video, thanks so much for posting. I will add that, with the old Land Cruiser and LX570 gone, this is the only Toyota/Lexus vehicle which has full time 4 wheel drive and KDSS standard. The 4Runner Limited is the only 4Runner trim with the full time 4 wheel drive and it has X-REAS instead of KDSS, which is a huge downgrade (I know as I have owned both). So, the current 22 (and now, 23) has the old V8, hydraulic KDSS, full time 4 wheel drive, ATRAC and updated infortainment - that's why I got one :)
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD They are very different - X-REAS is only on the Limited trim and was designed to help with the on-road handling of the 4Runner. It’s a very flawed system, which fails regularly at about 40k miles and is very expensive to replace (if one shock fails the whole systems needs to be replaced). Handling is still not good and it’s not designed for off-road use at all. Switching to KDSS is a big upgrade - combined with the v8 and better transmission the GX is much more surefooted and drive-able. And that’s with a system that is designed to be used off-road as well. The simplicity and performance of KDSS is a hallmark of Toyota engineering and this simple version of it will be missed when it’s gone. It’s why I believe that the current GX, with the reliable v8, 6 speed trans, KDSS and upgraded infotainment all standard, is a bargain.

@@swron_rules understood - however, I wanted full time 4 wheel drive along with KDSS. Only the Limited has that option and it’s very difficult if not impossible to get the limited with KDSS. Meanwhile, it’s standard on the GX, just like it was on the Land Cruiser.
One of the reasons I went pre-facelift (2013) with my GX is the greater similarities in the body style to the prado in relevance to off-road performance. More approach angle, and (I believe) more departure as well from the factory. I love everything else about it being a Lexus though, and wanted the GX for every pro you listed, especially over a 4Runner which I owned previously.
I am trying to understand why you guys like the V8 when they can make a V6 twin turbo that makes more hp and torque at the same time you spend less on gas price. The money you save can be spent on accessories and upgrades. Can you guys enlighten me?

Yes... we wondered if they weren't adjusted right at the dealer?? The hood seemed to shake since new. We've added the 2 additional latches and adjusted the rubber bumpers upward to keep that upward tension on it. Is that what you recommend? Spin the bumpers as high as possible right???
The Jeep Grand Cherokee I had about a decade ago had a center differential and I believe they still do. It handled slippery road surfaces amazingly well. I sold it a long time ago and I'm planning on a GX460 for my next car.
I have 2021 gx and just came back from Florida to Jersey and terrible gas mileage very expensive . I prefer peace of mind and the reliability Over saving on mpg saw way too many stranded cars going cross states. Two things I hate about the gx was that terrible barn door not the best for groceries and convenience . And virtually no space when third row is up
I’m just so conflicted on purchasing. Love the Lexus reliability, size and rugged capabilities but hate the gas mileage and “outdated” luxury. For what people spend on it you shouldn’t have to use your phone for a updated map lol
the 2022 model got an updated infotainment... this is a 2021 model... the mpgs are unhappy 🙁... the vehicle is very comfortable though and feels refined... check out the 2022 GX460 infotainment specs for more info... peace ✌️
I feel you man, I'm getting this car but I actually kinda hate it. I work for toyota north america and the only reason i'm considering this vehicle is because my stipend covers so much of the cost, and getting an RX would mean slowly killing my soul. Everyone on the GX forums just can't put their mind in the brain of a 2022/2023 new car buyer. If you tell them a JEEP Grand Cherokee (reserve summit) is more luxurious than this LEXUS. They hit you with "muh reliability and dependability". Even the rear half styling sucks. Literally the ONLY reason to buy this truck is to keep it for 15+ years. Even then you have to buy it 3 years used to justify what you're getting. Which basically means waiting until 2025 to get the 2022 infotainment for $50,000~ since there's no way in hell anyone should pay $70,000 for this vehicle. Even if youre fine with the spartan dash of the 2021 and earlier GXs, there are still about a half dozen ReLiAbLe off road options one could choose from that doesn't require them to immediatly rip the bodykit apart. It literally doesn't even have the body to support the "muh reliability and dependability" narrative for offroading, and it's too old looking to be a modern posh city truck. Literally laughing as i type this because this vehicle as a 2022/2023 "new" car offering is just so freakin deplorable it's actually funny. Will end up leasing a 2023 for 2 years, buying it out, selling it to these odd V8 nut huggers, then diving all over the GX550 when it comes out.
I just went from a 2017 Nissan Titan with a 5.6l V8 to a 2022 Toyota Tundra 1794, non hybrid twin turbo V6. So far I got 1mpg better on Nissan. When you have to move all those pound around at speed, it takes gasoline. Tundra is really powerful, tons of power, but needs the gas. Love the Tundra and I loved the Titan!
More the EPA then Toyota/Lexus, if the EPA has it their way we will all be walking to work. We need to fight this BS, cool video, looks like Borrego CA.
Here in Australia the Toyota Prado has been one of the best selling 4WD for a long time now. I am waiting for mine due next week. It’s the last model 2023 before it’s replaced with the new Prado 250. Looking forward to some stock off roading with the 2.8L diesel turbo 😁. V8? no thanks
I have owned three GX460's and I never had a hood latch fail nor have I heard of this on Mud so I wouldn't consider this a common issue. The ML sound system isn't standard, it's not available on the base model, you must option it on the mid-grade Premium, it's only standard on the top trim Luxury edition. They are incredible vehicles, I still choose our 200's over it but I am happy to have one in the drive way.
Mark Levinson (ML) is overrated and I would advise everyone to stay away from it. Their speakers go bust especially the sub-woofer without much use. I have an ultra lux LS430 that these failed me after being replaced twice and now I have GX 460 and I'm loving it.
I own a 2011 GX. My 5 pros: 1) Reliability. I did have to get a sensor replaced, but Lexus covered it under an extended warranty (they had extended it to 10 years because customers were having issues) 2) It goes anywhere and laughs at snow days 3) Even though I have the base model, I have the Mark Levinson stereo. Excellent stereo. I'm a but of an audiophile and I love it. 4) Smooth ride 5) Cooled seats. A small thing, but you really appreciate it when you have them My 5 cons: 1) The Lexus badge. My brother in-law likes to refer to it as my "fancy Toyota". I take that as a compliment. 2) Requires premium gas, although I have only ever used regular and have never had an issue 3) I have the NuLuxe seats, which serve the purpose, but I believe I would have preferred leather 4) It's pretty hard on it's brakes. It's a lot of vehicle to have to bring to a stop 5) Infotainment/Navigation screen is dull
It does have some brake dive for sure... and at highway speeds the steering is pretty loose. The newer GX ('22-23) at least have the 2nd to latest infotainment system, which is a big step up from the original one used in the vehicle (but also still dated). They're intentionally withholding the current gen infotainment "Lexus Interface" until the 2024-5 GX so they market that with the presumably lesser/smaller displacement turbo drivetrain that they will come with. I hope the best for the new generation of GX though... I wish they'd bring the Prado's diesel engine over here to the US for the GX.
Good video. Slightly confused about the mpg deal. Slow =better mpg? I have a 22 4Runner and the worse mpg I get is off road. Same with any car or truck. Off roaring has nothing to do with mpg, has to do with having fun. No offense

But everyone occasionally given the chance puts there foot down , equals more gas usage . My real worry is the Tundras performance now with the turbos . Definitely not perfect so I’m glad we’ll not see GX turbos I’ll bet for 2 years . ( maybe less) I think 2023 will be delayed .BTW if the turbos take premium , the cost will still be the same .AND turbos have limited life , if they go 10 years it’s a miracle , then $$$. I’m hoping for a hybrid ? Lexus will get it done
I like this truck because of V8, i mean come on, even if you get 3mpg better in turbo engine that is not deal breaker. Like on new Tundra i see peple complaning about there engines, and they miss V8. If you are getting this truck forget mpg. And enjoy that V8 because in few years this V8 will disapear for ever
I would say that there are one or two more cons such as 3rd row seats (you cannot shose package without tham, but they are heavy), also the back door is opening the way which is obsolutly incorrect if you park the cur on street
All 4WD’s will get stuck at one point or another, typically driver error. KDSS is hydraulically driven rams allowing the axle further downward travel in off-road scenario. It doesn’t “disconnect”. ATRAC is basically simulated axle lockers and works well but it’s definitely not the best system out there. The Land Rover Terrain Response System is probably best in class, when it works. For a V8, mpg’s aren’t actually that bad IMO. Better gearing and more gears would help things but Lexus/Toyota, like all other MFR’s have to worry about EPA requirements which means going to a smaller engine is necessary.

I disagree that the current v8 power is not needed. I was driving up very steep mountain passes in British Columbia near Kelowna, and I needed to stay in 4th gear at 3500 rpm to maintain a speed of 75mph uphill. As soon as the engine went into fifth, the car bogged down... I was wishing for an extra 100HP so the engine could chug along at a relaxed RPM.
The new turbo V6 will make more horsepower and torque than the current 4.6L V8... so technically it will have more power for the situation you described ✌️ ❤️

Lexus has, to date, not mastered the "infotainment" space. But, they usually get the rest right. Back around the turn of the century, i bought a lightly used 1998 LX460. I wanted the luxury, but also wanted the capability "just in case". Sure enough, on a day when light flurries were expected, I traveled home into a monumental blizzard. For a hundred miles, in a total white-out, i eased along (where no one else had made tracks) and i got home. My 2019 GX460 is my modern day version of THAT. I'm not conquering the desert like you are, but it pays to be prepared no matter where you live.

So, what is the difference between the 4Runner Limited's full-time 4wd system compared to the GX46's? From my research, they seem identical in terms of function with the only difference the GX has an auto-locking rear diff.
Center differential is exactly the same as the 4RL. The GX460 adds KDSS (sway bar disconnect), auto ATRAC, V8, 6speed and LUX features. There is no tear locker on the GX460... ATRAC is implemented instead
AFAIK Lexus puts 3 hood latches on NX because it has aluminum hood. Soft aluminum hood with just one latch would “dance” (bent) on highway speeds and this does not go well with luxurious vehicle, so Lexus fixed this with additional latches

The issue is not that it gets poor mpg, but it gets poor mpg and you have to still use premium fuel. What gets me is this exact same engine was in the Toyota tundra and till 2021 and used regular gasoline. I don’t understand why you have to put premium which to me is the break point for me. I’d buy one of these in a heartbeat and I don’t care about the mpg but I’m not gonna pay an extra $1.50 a gallon for premium fuel.
V8 over smaller turbo motors all the way. The V8 is infinitely more reliable than a turbo motor where turbos develop flutter, there’s increased clamping loads and stress, and I don’t believe that they actually get better gas mileage in the real world. The V8 has more soul with the sound, and not need the power off road? Seriously??
Cons are pretty bad and deal breakers for me. Here’s the thing… if you are not going to go off-road then those features are useless (except for the 4WD). The REALLY bad gas mileage and outdated luxury items are enough for me to pass.
What you call outdated is what lexus calls reliability. Every other auto maker packs all that electronic crap on their vehicles , and guess what, only problems. Lexus don't update when things just work. Your right though, if your only concern is keeping up with the Johnsons down the street, by all means buy a updated turd that is pretty but will barely get you to 100k before you start having problems

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I think the 2.4t in gas and hybrid variants will be reserved for the 4Runner and Tacoma. The GX will get the slightly detuned twin turbo V6 from the Tundra SR. The GX is too heavy for the 2.4t. The GX is 400+ lbs heavier than the 4R.
Not true. The GX has a torsen limited slip center differential that also locks.. not an open diff. Thus in normal driving all 4 wheels have power.. hence why Toyota calls it fulltime 4wd. The front and rears are allowed to slip without loosing power due to the center differential being a torsen limited slip type.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD incorrect. The center diff only locks to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. Front and rear differential are open only one tire is receiving power at a time. You admitted it yourself in the video. If one tire is spinning atrac applies the brakes to lock that wheel to send power to the other wheel that has traction.
@@Mr19assassin74 Nope. On road an open diff will send power to both wheels, just at different levels, thus why Toyota calls it fulltime 4wd. In fact, that's the only way to get fulltime 4wd... open front and rear diffs... otherwise you be in basic 4wd trying to go around a turn with both axles locked and binding... all 4 wheels get power in Toyota's system.. if they weren't allowed to differentiate you'd have binding...
@@Mr19assassin74 Not my knowledge. Toyota's Chief Drivetrain Engineer knowledge. Differentials are variators. they are not full on or full off. They trade speed for torque. Thus on any open diff, when you go around a turn both wheels on the car get power, just not equally. A fulltime 4wd system is just like the WRX Subaru's.. there's a mechanical center diff and open front and rear diffs. The diffs are open at the front and rear to allow for a power Differential.. aka a difference in power. But all 4 wheels get power on this system or any system like it including Subaru's system, the Mercedes G-Wagon system, etc..
GX has KDSS, fulltime 4wd, 4 wheel ATRAC standard. Closest 4runner trim is the 4RLimited. The premium GX offers muti-terrain select, it cab be added to lower GX trims by ordering the button and installing it...

I purchased a 2016 and at the time they had different trim packages, the base model didn't have alot of the features offered like blind spot, ventilated seats, etc. Just wanted to comment about kdss being standard on the 4runner offroad trim, and my experience with features on the GX, but great video and thanks for putting this together.
@@ericaho3837 Yes. Overall Toyota limits the add ons to the 4runner to prevent you from optioning a "V6 GX". I think a limited with KDSS would be the closest.. but I don't think you can get KDSS on the limited... like the video said marginal but objective differences.. 4runner or GX will get you anywhere off-road ✌️

Initially I wanted a TRD pro but they were nowhere to be found .A GX just off lease was less $$ and I have the executive ( top line) version at less money than (yes) new Pro but with its better highway handling and towing .In satisfied .

i own 2014 GX 460 , i have been putting regular fuel since brand new , because the Lexus tech to told me i can put regular unleaded fuel but i just get less horse power, and regular maintenance and have no issue , engine runs smooth and no knocking noise so far

Another plus - it's made in Japan at their best facility (forgot the name) for both Toyota and Lexus for a long time (4 Runner is made their as well). You're getting the best of the best at this facility - best engineers, best suppliers, best assemblers etc.

As a GX owner for years, I always wished they made a “TRD Pro” type model for the GX with a high clearance front bumper, slight lift with Fox shocks, more aggressive tires & wheels and no 3rd row seats to save weight. Since these aren’t cheap rigs it would be nice not to have to mod it right away for off-road use. It looks the new gen one will fix that, though

Here in Germany we are converting our v8 to lpg autogas. It's not gasoline but liquid gas and its half the price of gasoline. I got it in my bmw v8 aswell. And looking at the priceshock that was a smart idea 3 yeats ago.

Just bought one of these beauties. Unfortunately my 2016 RX F Sport was deemed a total loss (don't you love when other drivers dont pay attention to the road? Yeah.. me too 😑) BUT... with my insurance pay-out i was able to nab a 2018 GX460. I am in total awe of the fact that this beast out did my previous F Sport. I thought the RX was my favorite car that I've owned. After driving the GX for a mere 5 days, I realized how much BETTER this beautiful monster is...

We live in the Colorado mountains and I was thinking of getting an older 3rd gen (2010-15) AWD RX but my wife wanted a GX. A used 2013 GX460 showed up that drove like new because it had 21k miles so we got it. It is a beast. I hope the pro that it never gets stuck is true. That means I won't have to snowblow the driveway to escape.

I had the opportunity to drive a LC Prado in my family's home country that has awful streets and roads and terrifyingly reckless drivers on all kinds of vehicles. The LC was a tank. Torque and acceleration to drive in chaotic stop and sprint traffic was amazing and so was the comfort. If I had to live in that country I would own that or a Hilux. I think I will buy one of these as my retirement vehicle since I live in a mostly rural northern state. Shame on Toyota USA for not bringing their diesels here to the states! Great review my friend!

We also commute longer and have a wider range of off-road situations in America. Sadly, indoctrinated activists rule our regulatory system instead of actual facts and the political left capitalizes on emotional buzz words over stats to get those votes and keeping their donors in big oil and corporations happy! So smaller diesels are all but banned here..
I love my 19 GX and its V8 engine. We use it off road occasionally but also tow a 17 foot RV trailer. The V8 power is nice to have when towing! Also, I've put a set of Dobinson springs that gave me a little over an inch of lift and also installed BFG 265 65 AT tires which are an inch taller than stock. Also increased the payload some to help with the tongue weight of the trailer. Overall I think its set up perfect for what we do.

@@ramblr5900grab 4Runner, amd get a tune or supercharger. Hands down just a tune being the first thing before mods is the best money you cam spend, better throttle tip in and gear changes and from there maf calibrator and washables filter and decent exhaust later.
4Runner for sure, better angles back window rolls down, 4x4 system , practical, its just a far better experiences all around too. If you ad supercharger youre having fun but really a 700.00 tune by itself you're having fun and getting better mpg.

As a Pros I would add how last long this vehicle can live (with the proper service) and for the dated infotainment system, I found a very great solution (don’t want to ad anything) that added to my car a wireless Apple car play navigation and solved 90% of all my issues (also it was very easy to install by myself).

I did this mod at the end of 2021 and did a lot of investigations in that field before choosing the best one.
Again I don't want to advertise some product, but here is what I have and how I installed it:
1. I bought Grom V-line2 unit with navigation (latest hardware). It's a bit expensive (~$600) but it is 100% worth it.
1. I used a Step-by-step installation video from Sami (on his "DIY Speed garage" youtube channel). It's super easy to follow.
1. I also placed my unit under the central console.
1. important-1! I placed the unit right under the front air tube (of the central console) to cool it effectively. (I played with different locations and this place is the best).
1. important-2! This unit has connectors from both sides :(, it was super inconvenient and it's very important to make sure that wires and not *pinched or *broken or ... (I don't know the right analog of *the russian words "заломленый провод").
1. That's literally it. It's super stable (it hung before a couple of times because of the problem with the wrong unit placement), you can disconnect-connect the battery and it will work, and it is 100% wireless in turms of connecting to my phone and intuitively knows which device to connect to (I share my truck with my wife and she is also very happy with it).
1. I didn't install the USB cable on the dash (as Sami did, it's not necessary), but I still have it plugged into the unit (just in case) and concealed under the dash panel for easy access.
The whole process is relatively safe to DIY and took about 2 hours MAX. I can email pictures of the process and answer more questions.

Hi! All the steel crap definitely weighs it down... I would recommend aluminum honestly for all skids. The bumper is a pig and I wish it was aluminum. The sliders are steel but they weight is distributed evenly... don't recommend Victory sliders.. please try another brand instead ❤️
I own a 2008 120 Prado here in Panama, and it has the 2.7 2TR-FE 4 cyl. from the Tacoma. The 120 Prado weighs about 4000 lbs., which is probably 1000 lbs. less then the GX460, and I get 16.8 mpg U.S. in the city, and 19.2 mpg U.S. on the highway. Which, may be equal to, or maybe less than , the GX460. Plus, the GX has twice the horsepower and three times the torque. So for me, I may be looking for a GX460, but all of them are imported to Panama from North America, so you have to make sure you get a good one. We get the Prado and the Land Cruiser 200/300.
Just found this video, thanks so much for posting. I will add that, with the old Land Cruiser and LX570 gone, this is the only Toyota/Lexus vehicle which has full time 4 wheel drive and KDSS standard. The 4Runner Limited is the only 4Runner trim with the full time 4 wheel drive and it has X-REAS instead of KDSS, which is a huge downgrade (I know as I have owned both). So, the current 22 (and now, 23) has the old V8, hydraulic KDSS, full time 4 wheel drive, ATRAC and updated infortainment - that's why I got one :)

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD They are very different - X-REAS is only on the Limited trim and was designed to help with the on-road handling of the 4Runner. It’s a very flawed system, which fails regularly at about 40k miles and is very expensive to replace (if one shock fails the whole systems needs to be replaced). Handling is still not good and it’s not designed for off-road use at all. Switching to KDSS is a big upgrade - combined with the v8 and better transmission the GX is much more surefooted and drive-able. And that’s with a system that is designed to be used off-road as well. The simplicity and performance of KDSS is a hallmark of Toyota engineering and this simple version of it will be missed when it’s gone. It’s why I believe that the current GX, with the reliable v8, 6 speed trans, KDSS and upgraded infotainment all standard, is a bargain.

@@swron_rules understood - however, I wanted full time 4 wheel drive along with KDSS. Only the Limited has that option and it’s very difficult if not impossible to get the limited with KDSS. Meanwhile, it’s standard on the GX, just like it was on the Land Cruiser.

One of the reasons I went pre-facelift (2013) with my GX is the greater similarities in the body style to the prado in relevance to off-road performance. More approach angle, and (I believe) more departure as well from the factory. I love everything else about it being a Lexus though, and wanted the GX for every pro you listed, especially over a 4Runner which I owned previously.

The GX460 rubber bumpstops for the hood can be spin adjusted to maintain more upward tension on the hood so it doesn't shake.
Yes... we wondered if they weren't adjusted right at the dealer?? The hood seemed to shake since new. We've added the 2 additional latches and adjusted the rubber bumpers upward to keep that upward tension on it. Is that what you recommend? Spin the bumpers as high as possible right???

The Jeep Grand Cherokee I had about a decade ago had a center differential and I believe they still do. It handled slippery road surfaces amazingly well. I sold it a long time ago and I'm planning on a GX460 for my next car.

I have 2021 gx and just came back from Florida to Jersey and terrible gas mileage very expensive . I prefer peace of mind and the reliability Over saving on mpg saw way too many stranded cars going cross states.
Two things I hate about the gx was that terrible barn door not the best for groceries and convenience . And virtually no space when third row is up

I’m just so conflicted on purchasing. Love the Lexus reliability, size and rugged capabilities but hate the gas mileage and “outdated” luxury. For what people spend on it you shouldn’t have to use your phone for a updated map lol
the 2022 model got an updated infotainment... this is a 2021 model... the mpgs are unhappy 🙁... the vehicle is very comfortable though and feels refined... check out the 2022 GX460 infotainment specs for more info... peace ✌️

I feel you man, I'm getting this car but I actually kinda hate it. I work for toyota north america and the only reason i'm considering this vehicle is because my stipend covers so much of the cost, and getting an RX would mean slowly killing my soul. Everyone on the GX forums just can't put their mind in the brain of a 2022/2023 new car buyer. If you tell them a JEEP Grand Cherokee (reserve summit) is more luxurious than this LEXUS. They hit you with "muh reliability and dependability". Even the rear half styling sucks. Literally the ONLY reason to buy this truck is to keep it for 15+ years. Even then you have to buy it 3 years used to justify what you're getting. Which basically means waiting until 2025 to get the 2022 infotainment for $50,000~ since there's no way in hell anyone should pay $70,000 for this vehicle. Even if youre fine with the spartan dash of the 2021 and earlier GXs, there are still about a half dozen ReLiAbLe off road options one could choose from that doesn't require them to immediatly rip the bodykit apart. It literally doesn't even have the body to support the "muh reliability and dependability" narrative for offroading, and it's too old looking to be a modern posh city truck. Literally laughing as i type this because this vehicle as a 2022/2023 "new" car offering is just so freakin deplorable it's actually funny. Will end up leasing a 2023 for 2 years, buying it out, selling it to these odd V8 nut huggers, then diving all over the GX550 when it comes out.

I just went from a 2017 Nissan Titan with a 5.6l V8 to a 2022 Toyota Tundra 1794, non hybrid twin turbo V6. So far I got 1mpg better on Nissan. When you have to move all those pound around at speed, it takes gasoline. Tundra is really powerful, tons of power, but needs the gas. Love the Tundra and I loved the Titan!
People get way too caught up on fuel mileage with these vehicles. Get a car if you care about mpgs. Not a v8 truck or suv.

Here in Australia the Toyota Prado has been one of the best selling 4WD for a long time now. I am waiting for mine due next week. It’s the last model 2023 before it’s replaced with the new Prado 250. Looking forward to some stock off roading with the 2.8L diesel turbo 😁. V8? no thanks

I am pretty sure all 4Runners come with ATRAC. With the exception of the 4x2, all base SR5s and up have it standard.
4runner is awesome. Auto ATRAC on GX/LX... one less button to remember to push 😃
I have owned three GX460's and I never had a hood latch fail nor have I heard of this on Mud so I wouldn't consider this a common issue. The ML sound system isn't standard, it's not available on the base model, you must option it on the mid-grade Premium, it's only standard on the top trim Luxury edition.
They are incredible vehicles, I still choose our 200's over it but I am happy to have one in the drive way.

Mark Levinson (ML) is overrated and I would advise everyone to stay away from it. Their speakers go bust especially the sub-woofer without much use. I have an ultra lux LS430 that these failed me after being replaced twice and now I have GX 460 and I'm loving it.
I own a 2011 GX.
My 5 pros:
1) Reliability. I did have to get a sensor replaced, but Lexus covered it under an extended warranty (they had extended it to 10 years because customers were having issues)
2) It goes anywhere and laughs at snow days
3) Even though I have the base model, I have the Mark Levinson stereo. Excellent stereo. I'm a but of an audiophile and I love it.
4) Smooth ride
5) Cooled seats. A small thing, but you really appreciate it when you have them
My 5 cons:
1) The Lexus badge. My brother in-law likes to refer to it as my "fancy Toyota". I take that as a compliment.
2) Requires premium gas, although I have only ever used regular and have never had an issue
3) I have the NuLuxe seats, which serve the purpose, but I believe I would have preferred leather
4) It's pretty hard on it's brakes. It's a lot of vehicle to have to bring to a stop
5) Infotainment/Navigation screen is dull
It does have some brake dive for sure... and at highway speeds the steering is pretty loose. The newer GX ('22-23) at least have the 2nd to latest infotainment system, which is a big step up from the original one used in the vehicle (but also still dated). They're intentionally withholding the current gen infotainment "Lexus Interface" until the 2024-5 GX so they market that with the presumably lesser/smaller displacement turbo drivetrain that they will come with. I hope the best for the new generation of GX though... I wish they'd bring the Prado's diesel engine over here to the US for the GX.

Good video. Slightly confused about the mpg deal. Slow =better mpg? I have a 22 4Runner and the worse mpg I get is off road. Same with any car or truck. Off roaring has nothing to do with mpg, has to do with having fun. No offense
As for turbos if you lead foot it there goes your gas mileage . My gas mileage is smooth on the highway where it simply purrs with revs at 1500

I like this truck because of V8, i mean come on, even if you get 3mpg better in turbo engine that is not deal breaker. Like on new Tundra i see peple complaning about there engines, and they miss V8. If you are getting this truck forget mpg. And enjoy that V8 because in few years this V8 will disapear for ever

All 4WD’s will get stuck at one point or another, typically driver error. KDSS is hydraulically driven rams allowing the axle further downward travel in off-road scenario. It doesn’t “disconnect”. ATRAC is basically simulated axle lockers and works well but it’s definitely not the best system out there. The Land Rover Terrain Response System is probably best in class, when it works. For a V8, mpg’s aren’t actually that bad IMO. Better gearing and more gears would help things but Lexus/Toyota, like all other MFR’s have to worry about EPA requirements which means going to a smaller engine is necessary.

I was driving up very steep mountain passes in British Columbia near Kelowna, and I needed to stay in 4th gear at 3500 rpm to maintain a speed of 75mph uphill. As soon as the engine went into fifth, the car bogged down... I was wishing for an extra 100HP so the engine could chug along at a relaxed RPM.
The new turbo V6 will make more horsepower and torque than the current 4.6L V8... so technically it will have more power for the situation you described ✌️ ❤️

Thank you 😊 This is a Premium trim... I'm not sure dealer's even stock the "base" trim in SoCal.. I think the base model is just a msrp catfish..lol.. the luxury has crawl control and MTS.. they can also be added on to the lower trims as well... enjoy your new GX ❤️

Lexus has, to date, not mastered the "infotainment" space. But, they usually get the rest right.
Back around the turn of the century, i bought a lightly used 1998 LX460. I wanted the luxury, but also wanted the capability "just in case". Sure enough, on a day when light flurries were expected, I traveled home into a monumental blizzard. For a hundred miles, in a total white-out, i eased along (where no one else had made tracks) and i got home.
My 2019 GX460 is my modern day version of THAT.
I'm not conquering the desert like you are, but it pays to be prepared no matter where you live.

So, what is the difference between the 4Runner Limited's full-time 4wd system compared to the GX46's? From my research, they seem identical in terms of function with the only difference the GX has an auto-locking rear diff.
Center differential is exactly the same as the 4RL. The GX460 adds KDSS (sway bar disconnect), auto ATRAC, V8, 6speed and LUX features. There is no tear locker on the GX460... ATRAC is implemented instead

AFAIK Lexus puts 3 hood latches on NX because it has aluminum hood. Soft aluminum hood with just one latch would “dance” (bent) on highway speeds and this does not go well with luxurious vehicle, so Lexus fixed this with additional latches

Air or auto leveling suspension is available in the rear only as an option but it is less preferable & not ideal for off-roading.

All infotainment systems get outdated in due time. The GX is for older folks who are ok with this kind of technology.
I am an owner of a prado diesel normal suspension, by looking this video, I may think prado has a better suspension than the gx460,
The EPA is making it hard for manufacturers to put in V-8's. I'm sure Toyota would keep its most reliable gas engine in the Lexus GX if they could.
The mpgs on the new turbo engines should be better though... that could be considered good news?

MPG for the 2024 GX is 17 combined. Only 1 MPG better. Not a fan of turbo ‘magic’.
The issue is not that it gets poor mpg, but it gets poor mpg and you have to still use premium fuel. What gets me is this exact same engine was in the Toyota tundra and till 2021 and used regular gasoline. I don’t understand why you have to put premium which to me is the break point for me. I’d buy one of these in a heartbeat and I don’t care about the mpg but I’m not gonna pay an extra $1.50 a gallon for premium fuel.

V8 over smaller turbo motors all the way. The V8 is infinitely more reliable than a turbo motor where turbos develop flutter, there’s increased clamping loads and stress, and I don’t believe that they actually get better gas mileage in the real world. The V8 has more soul with the sound, and not need the power off road? Seriously??

Cons are pretty bad and deal breakers for me. Here’s the thing… if you are not going to go off-road then those features are useless (except for the 4WD). The REALLY bad gas mileage and outdated luxury items are enough for me to pass.

What you call outdated is what lexus calls reliability. Every other auto maker packs all that electronic crap on their vehicles , and guess what, only problems. Lexus don't update when things just work. Your right though, if your only concern is keeping up with the Johnsons down the street, by all means buy a updated turd that is pretty but will barely get you to 100k before you start having problems

Apple Play or a larger screen is a bit crazy. I don’t need a lot of the other stuff but the minim these days does include a good onboard digital screen and smart USB. I don’t need heated steering wheel and cooled seats. Just saying.

The KDSS system hydraulically extends the swaybar endlink it controls not disconnects 😉
NO. It makes one end link non-ridgid which is mechanically equivalent to it being disconnected.

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I think the 2.4t in gas and hybrid variants will be reserved for the 4Runner and Tacoma. The GX will get the slightly detuned twin turbo V6 from the Tundra SR. The GX is too heavy for the 2.4t. The GX is 400+ lbs heavier than the 4R.

current generation comparisons. The 4th gen 4runner in V8 trim only was essentially the GX/Prado... at least in the USA 🇺🇸

It has open differentials. Only 2 tires, 1 front 1 rear spin at a time not all 4.
Not true. The GX has a torsen limited slip center differential that also locks.. not an open diff. Thus in normal driving all 4 wheels have power.. hence why Toyota calls it fulltime 4wd. The front and rears are allowed to slip without loosing power due to the center differential being a torsen limited slip type.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD incorrect. The center diff only locks to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. Front and rear differential are open only one tire is receiving power at a time. You admitted it yourself in the video. If one tire is spinning atrac applies the brakes to lock that wheel to send power to the other wheel that has traction.
@@Mr19assassin74 Nope. On road an open diff will send power to both wheels, just at different levels, thus why Toyota calls it fulltime 4wd. In fact, that's the only way to get fulltime 4wd... open front and rear diffs... otherwise you be in basic 4wd trying to go around a turn with both axles locked and binding... all 4 wheels get power in Toyota's system.. if they weren't allowed to differentiate you'd have binding...

@@Mr19assassin74 Not my knowledge. Toyota's Chief Drivetrain Engineer knowledge. Differentials are variators. they are not full on or full off. They trade speed for torque. Thus on any open diff, when you go around a turn both wheels on the car get power, just not equally. A fulltime 4wd system is just like the WRX Subaru's.. there's a mechanical center diff and open front and rear diffs. The diffs are open at the front and rear to allow for a power Differential.. aka a difference in power. But all 4 wheels get power on this system or any system like it including Subaru's system, the Mercedes G-Wagon system, etc..

Few false statements, 4runner offroad has kdss standard and gx doesn't have every feature standard.
GX has KDSS, fulltime 4wd, 4 wheel ATRAC standard. Closest 4runner trim is the 4RLimited. The premium GX offers muti-terrain select, it cab be added to lower GX trims by ordering the button and installing it...

I purchased a 2016 and at the time they had different trim packages, the base model didn't have alot of the features offered like blind spot, ventilated seats, etc. Just wanted to comment about kdss being standard on the 4runner offroad trim, and my experience with features on the GX, but great video and thanks for putting this together.
@@ericaho3837 Yes. Overall Toyota limits the add ons to the 4runner to prevent you from optioning a "V6 GX". I think a limited with KDSS would be the closest.. but I don't think you can get KDSS on the limited... like the video said marginal but objective differences.. 4runner or GX will get you anywhere off-road ✌️

Initially I wanted a TRD pro but they were nowhere to be found .A GX just off lease was less $$ and I have the executive ( top line) version at less money than (yes) new Pro but with its better highway handling and towing .In satisfied .
