You know there is another bolt you can remove to level out the fluid while you in the CVT. Just watch this mechanic video. th-cam.com/video/qhd39HU-TJE/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video! I was getting ready to trade my Rogue in on another car. I did this procedure just as you did in the video, and my transmission about a quart and a half overfull! The crazy thing is I had a new transmission put in a year ago and it hadn't worked right the whole time. I kept taking it back but the guy couldn't figure the 'safe mode' issue out. So, when I found a 2016 service bulletin I realized he didn't know about it and overfilled the transmission from the start. Thanks to your video I was able to get it corrected!
Brilliantly thorough and detailed. Thank you very much for making this video. I scoured the internet looking for something just like this and you provided it! And it worked for me! Thanks amigo! You saved my bacon!
Use the leveling plug and wait until the bottom of the trans pan feels warm, like a kid with a fever, its going to be SUPER close. I did my first cvt swap on my 17 pathfunder this way after dropping the pan, and swapping both filters. The amount that ultimatley ended up in my catch pan after leveling to a trickle was 4.75 qts and I put in 5. With all the paper towels and drips on the floor I likely took out exactly what I put in. I am, of course assyming the flyid level was correct from the factory
I bought an oven meat thermometer with a wired probe from Walmart and used it for my 2018 Nissan Sentra instead of an infrared temperature gun because you don't have to worry about outside, ambient temperature. All I had to do was bend the stainless steel probe into a curve until it fit perfectly down the CVT fill tube all the way to the bottom of the pan. If anyone is interested in trying this, the thermometer brand name was Taylor and I bought the one with slimmest probe. I drained the excess fluid when it hit exactly 104 degrees Fahrenheit and had no issues at all. The thermometer has an alarm that you can set to any temperature, so that comes in handy. You can set the alarm, get underneath the vehicle and wait for it to beep so that you can immediately drain the excess fluid from the drain bolt.
I am confused! For I just had my transmission oil changed in my 2007 Maxima (50,000+ miles). The mechanic told me, "When the car is cold (like over night) the fluid should be right in the middle of the "scratch" marks. Then, AFTER the car is hot; the oil should be at the "Hot" mark. Yet kind Sir, you tell us that it should be in the middle of the scratch marks; AFTER the car has been running to "148 degrees". And get this: that "Hot" mark is 2" from the top scratch mark! Believe it or not. Now WHICH one is correct? Does any one know? I really NEED this information. For CVT's are VERY sensitive to the right amount of oil. And it is my understanding that the CVT can be damaged; If the exact amount of oil is not in the transmission; at all times! Please kind Sir...I have tried to get the true answer for 14 yrs; but everyone says it differently. What in the Pluperfect Hallelujah is going on? Huh?
@Auto Fix Pal because it was overfilled you can just make sure car is at operating temperature remove the 19mm drain plug, and let the fluid level itself out.
This was very helpful information needed to get the correct fluid level without the scanner. I had replaced the 2010 sentra transmission and filled 6 qts in the 8 qt system, then added the 7th qt incrementally thinking the torque converter held a certain amount. Once I thought I had it right I drove it around for about a month checking it a few times. It was difficult to hit the mark but it was time to drive the car on a 400 mile trip. On the road I checked it and found that at higher temps the fluid contracts to the point there is no reading on the dip stick. This was very concerning and I did add more. As the fluid cools it expands and there is a higher mark on the dip stick. The trick is to read it at 160 degrees. The car made the 400 mile trip without blowing up. I took several more readings and felt satisfied leaving the car for my daughter to drive while in college. However, I don't think I will ever buy a CVT transmission again.

complain to Nissan (corporate and or consumer affairs) you are just outside the warranty of 60k. Be a PITA to them, most of the time you can get assistance with the replacement from Nissan be it a full cost coverage or partial coverage. If your fluid is low you can possibly get lucky by correcting the level. If its correct then You will need repair and you still may have DTC's stored in the transmission module which doesn't always trigger a Check Engine light.
Only put NS-2 in pre 2013 Nissan CVT as per sticker under hood, NS-3 is for nissan CVT's after 2012 and has not been recommended as an alternatif to NS-2..
I have the Veepeak bluetooth Adapter paired with the OBD fusion app and can read CVT temp! When CVT temp is around 160F the level on the dipstick reads .75" over the full Mark. How bad of an overfill is this? I've driven it for over 20K miles like this but I'm afraid being 3/4 of an inch over filled may damage the CVT. It's a 14 Murano AWD.

No, Chances are your Altima CVT was already failing. I dont believe that using Castrol brand CVT fluid is the reason especially if it says that it applies to your vehicle. I am not even sure Nissan Makes the fluid. Now with that said, i dont reccomend using anything But Nissan CVT fluid because i cant vouch for the other stuff and i dont want anyone blaming me because their CVT went bad afterwards.
@@100mrrisky You can use NS3 in an NS2 vehicle. i think its plausible. If you can prove that the fluid casued your failure than that would put Castrol on the Hook for a CVT. I don't think they would want to expose themselves to that type of liability.

only use nissan cvt oil, just killed my altima with some Castrol cvt 🙁
No, Chances are your Altima CVT was already failing. I dont believe that using Castrol brand CVT fluid is the reason especially if it says that it applies to your vehicle. I am not even sure Nissan Makes the fluid. Now with that said, i dont reccomend using anything But Nissan CVT fluid because i cant vouch for the other stuff and i dont want anyone blaming me because their CVT went bad afterwards.
@@Autofixpals the castrol fluid is supposed to be universal for ns1 and ns2. Im no expert but i think that is impossible
@@100mrrisky You can use NS3 in an NS2 vehicle. i think its plausible. If you can prove that the fluid casued your failure than that would put Castrol on the Hook for a CVT. I don't think they would want to expose themselves to that type of liability.
@@Autofixpals i cant find anywhere that says you can use ns 3 in a ns 2 transmission..
@@100mrrisky All of the new transmissions come with NS3. Even if you get a rebuilt one for a vehicle that originally came with NS2. It's backwards compatible.
Removed the extra fluid just to put it back in lol.
yes its stupid. But thats the procedure in the manual. over fill it til its correct. when you say it out loud yeah its stupid.
so in other words just wait about 15 minutes with car on till worm
Wish there was some way to shut off the music...
Blame Renault. It's ALWAYS Renault's fault!
Just run the car for 10 minutes
This nissan or the junkies cars on the market they build them to break
they dont break as often as you think. They are not too bad.
Yeah, got 300k miles on 2007 versa w cvt, never any problems beside normal maintenance
It's kind of hard to watch the video with that stupid music playing
The music sucks.
Amen, amen and AMEN!
Guys critiquing the music..you're on the wrong Video...not a music Video

Hi Hakim,2010 Maxima,i drove 30 min to get to the mechanic to get the cvt fluid level check and corrected,i ll wait for the cvt temp go down,my question let say i wait an hour and when checking it,starting temp is let say 130 degrees, and i go thru all the gears wait 15 sec, most likely temp will reach 155 degrees in minutes.if i do like this will it be an accurate checking?or the time difference between going thru the gears and checking the level effects the reading?does it matter how cold the starting cvt temp is? Thank you again
starting temp is important without a scanner. Start with the vehicle and fluid at ambient temperature for best results.
@@Autofixpals Thank you
