Those words "catastrophic failure" really do give me the chills. I'm off to give my 2013 Rogue with 153,000 miles it's second CVT fluid change right now. This video prepared me last time and helped me again today. I'm expecting 200,000 or more from old Bessie.
I own a 2012 Rogue, & had heard about the CVT failures. I’ve never changed my fluid (86000 miles), but I definitely will now! Very clear, concise instructions. Thanks !
Good advice! I would also let people know, because I went through this, to add a transmission cooler to the system. Makes all the difference in the world and is not expensive too do. Thanks for the video.
I’m lucky to watch this video now I know my car needs CVT NS 3 . Now my car is 51 thousands miles if i go local workshop 100% they gonna put regular transmission oil. Thanks for information.
I have a 2016 Altima with almost 42,000 miles. I decided to change my CVT fluid at around 36,000 miles after reading many horror stories about these transmissions. I saw in the service manual that the fluid seems to be very sensitive to temperature, so I did the drain and fill on a morning here in Florida when the temp was around 60. Just under 4 quarts came out, so just added the exact same amount. My car does not have a dipstick, just the cap on top of the tube. I plan on doing a 4 quart drain and fill every year to keep the fluid fresh. Just bought some on Amazon and I think it was around $17 a quart for the Nissan NS-3 fluid. After the warranty expires, I may decide to use a different fluid. Hope to see more videos from you.
Watch Symbiote215 video on your CVT oil change. There is an overflow drain bolt you need to remove while engine is running to drain fluid back to proper level.
When changing the fluid..you got two filters to change..take trans pan off filter there & a filter goes in the transmission cooler...then replace pan & transmission cooler then refill..👍
Thanks for the video. I plan on disconnecting the oil cooler line after the initial refill to get the other 4 quarts out of the system that way I am not mixing old fluid with new. Only because my Rouge has 98K and never been done.
@@TheRegularGuyDIY I was able to get out another 5 quarts of fluid. So thats a total of 9 quarts. I got out. 4 from the pan, then 5 from the cooler. Still was a little dark coming from the cooler but I ran out of new fluid. So next time I will purchase 11 quarts to do this complete service. A drain and fill doesn't even touch half the fluid in this vehicle.
@@alexthephotoguy I used the Aisin Brand NS-2 fluid. They are the manufacturers of the fluid anyway for Nissan. It's available for about $7 a quart on RockAuto.
Well done, great info. (Just got back from a dealer today who wanted to charge over $100 to check the level of the trans fluid because, they said, the car "doesn't have a dip stick and requires a special procedure." I now know better, thanks to you.)
Solid "how to" video. I think all of the Nissans made between 2008 - 2014 have had their CVT transmission changed/fail by now, Nissan should have recalled all of them. We have already put over 138,000 miles on the new/replacement transmission so I think Nissan fixed the problem. However, I've noticed all CVT transmissions require fluid changes more often than traditional geared transmissions, every 40,000 to 50,000 miles vs 80,000 to 120,000 miles.
@@shellybelle6781 What has worked for me is Valvoline Full Synthetic CVT ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid - in the blue bottle). It is both NS-2 and NS-3 rated covering all Nissan CVT transmissions. Also, being replaced every 40,000 it is also one of the cheapest options. With this being said any CVT transmission fluid that is NS-2 or NS-3 depending on your CVT transmission should work fine. Also, our Rogue has over 160,000 on the replaced transmission and going great. 258,000+ total miles on the car.

You will ruin your torque wrench, or at the very least, throw the calibration off. Instead, invest in a breaker bar for loosening hard to turn fasteners, or in this case, drain plugs.

Vehicle is cherry and I want to try and avoid any unwanted issues. Great advise. Maintenance book says every 80,000. I will ignore that suggestion. I will also use oem Nissan fluid.
There's actually a process to measure the CVTF level, where you have to warm up the CVTF a little bit, park in a flat surface, push the ebrake, go to 1st Gear, take the dipstick out, clean it, put it back in and then take the selector to either N or P, then grab the CVTF level, which has to be between the 2 dipstick notches. That's how it's instructed on the FSM.

Excellent video!! Thanks. I have a question. Do we have to change the transmission filter as well, every time that we drain and fill transmission fluid?
Changing the filter requires taking off the transmission pan, which is probably the optimal service but not something I wanted to do, exchanging the fluid should extend the life of the cvt
