That's how you set the proper level of the fluid, otherwise, it may be overfilled. There is no way to accurately measure everything that comes out because of the way the filter housing is mounted, and the amount of fluid drained may not be consistent from one service to the next, depending on how the vehicle was lifted and other factors. There is also no guarantee that the previous fill was to the correct level. Since the transmission fluid expands a lot with temperature, the transmission needs to reach operating temperature and be on a level surface to be measured properly.
You're awesome and this is fantastic. Almost no one covers replacing the filter! I wonder how many of these Nissan transmissions could be saved if they not only replaced the fluid be also replaced the filter! 💯

Incredibly good video. Our nissan versa 2017 has 65k miles on it and is starting to have transmission issues. The mechanic said we may "need" a new transmission. After watching this, i am hopeful that they are full of BS. Thank you sir.
These CVT’s are horrible and you might need a new transmission. Changing the fluid will not magically fix it, just might prolong it a little longer. Now if you just have dirty fluid and your mechanic told you that you need a new transmission then that’s a bad mechanic
Late response, but I will warn you about my 2018 Versa which I was told needed a new transmission. It's a well known issue now that corrosion on the tail light bulbs/boards will cause the Versa to act as if it's having transmission issues. I confirmed this by cleaning rust/corrosion off my tail light bulbs/boards and it solved my "transmission issues." You can google it now and it's all over the internet. Check those tail lights before buying a transmission.

Since you pulled the fender liner, you can remove the fill tube by removing a single 10mm. Then a flex tube funnel can be used to fill the transmission from the wheel well

@@Mr_Musty420 Hi! I’m sorry, but I stopped checking my car’s MPG after the second year of ownership. However, if your CVT is slipping due to a lack of friction, I believe that could lower your MPG. Thanks for the tutorial, that was very helpful. I tried my best to get the cap for the filler tube out from the top, but I just couldn't get it, the plastic was all messed up. Since the fender well was out anyway, it was super easy to just take out the tube from the bottom (one 10mm bolt only), and then remove the cap, and put it back.
I read in the Haynes book about that little overflow tube. No others on TH-cam talked about using it to set the volume. Thank you for confirming the system in the Haynes book.

Just an update. I have a 2018 Vera S with 75,500 miles. I decided to do the transmission fluid and filter change. It was a rental car in great condition with 32K miles when I purchased it three years ago. It had no problems but I decided to do the change. When I drained the fluid and replaced the filter there was slightly more than 2 quarts in my catch pan. I then removed the transmission pan and removed the screen filter. That added almost 2 additional quarts of fluid drained out. The fluid was dark but relatively clean. The three magnets had some very fine metal but not much. I replaced the metal screen and gasket and buttoned it back up. I added 4 quarts of Nissan transmission fluid because that was same amount I drained out. It runs great. The worst thing is removing and reinstalling the fender liner. Also I filled the transmission by removing the filler tube when I had the fender liner off. Another person suggested this and it is the easiest way by far because the end cap on the filler tube is a pain to remove. You just need a flexible funnel.
Great video, big thanks! One thing doesn't make sense to me, though. You show draining the fluid, installing a new filter and gasket, putting 1 qt of transmission fluid in, and then draining some (or all?) of it out. That can't be all that you did, of course. Would you please tell how much fluid you drained (and why) and how much you put in (and at what stage)?
There's not an exact amount. Measure how much comes out and put that much back in. Will probably be around 4 to 5 quarts. Could be more, could be less, especially if you do the filter.
Easy way to get the 'dipstick' filler cap off was if you look at the bottom the the filler tube there is a 10mm bolt....remove that and pull the filler tube up and out. Then you can work on removing the filler cap outside of the car where it's easier, or just fill the fluid where you removed the filler tube and then reinstall the tube. As the pinned comment says, this is by far the most comprehensive video. After a lifetime of being intimidated by the CVT, I feel like I can take it on. I do have one question raised by the local dealerships here in PR: does the transmission need to be reprogrammed after every flush or are they just trying to get more money out of me? I was told by two techs that it's essential, stating that without it the transmission just won't work as it's supposed to. But I've been researching for hours and have found nothing to back this claim up. Now I'm not sure if I want to do the change myself (which I feel I can) or just pay the $300+ in order to avoid giving my wife ammo if anything goes sideways 😄.
@@grampzquad I personally feel they said so in order to secure our giving them the vehicle so they can get the money for it. But you're not the only person I've seen make a video without mentioning it, so I'm fairly confident it's probably not a necessity.
@@nightmover101035 Hello! Not sure if you're poking fun or if you found something in particular funny, but if you have any info, I'd be happy to hear it. If not, hope you have a good day.🙃 (PS, I realize it sounds incredibly sarcastic, but I'm being sincere.)
This video is excellent, but ive got one question. After filling up your fluid and running your car to warm it up, when you pull the plug will it stop draining the fluid once its no longer overfilled or will it just keep draining til its empty unless you put it back in?
@Grampzquad Great info, you are a lifesaver, I am not sure what kind of camera you have but if you are using an iPhone you just have to tap the screen where you are trying to get it to focus and should focus for a few seconds even if it's off-center
My 2014 Versa didn't have a filter in that location. It's a base S model. Could it be inside the transmission pan? Maybe the American models are designed different? I just changed the fluid. Will change the filter next time if I can find it.
I do strongly believe that the round filter is doing most of the filtering. I do not believe for even a second that the screen can catch all of the debris that causes problems. Look at Volkswagen with their 09G transmission, I had one and know that the filter is just a screen. They also have a ton of valve body problems with those. My only guess is that SOMETHING is making its way through that screen and it gets stuck in the valve body and the solenoids become abrasive from that debris and wear the valve body out very slowly over time as the solenoids actuate. Now I realize that a CVT is different. It would have less parts likely to cause debris to get in the fluid. That is far fewer clutches. I wonder how many CVT failures are the result of not changing that round filter? I just have to wonder because some people think that little things like that don't make a difference. Odds are they may be stuck on the side of the highway one day with a neglected CVT. This isn't the 1960s any more, our cars are a lot more complex than that these days and it just gets worse!
guyssssssss u want to shift thru gear before u let the over fluid drain thats the only step this guy did wrong . u want to shift thru each gear before u open the drain fluid bolt or overfill fluid.

You know what you need to do. Secure that tube in there permanently cut the bowl off the top now you have yourself an easy accessible fill tube. You just can't check the level with it. That's what I did on 2017 Nissan
Silly question, after the 10 minutes run, when you second open the drain plug to drain the excess fluid I guess is with the engine shut off, because it sounds like the engine is running in the background

Hi, Great Video. I have a Nissan March K13 with the same CVT it seems. There should be a metal filter just above the fluid cover. Does it need to be changed or cleaned? Or is it there for the car's life time? Thanks.
Did you get all the dirty fluid out of the torque converter or just leave it in with the new fluid? I have a 2018 S model. It's white just like yours. Hope it's the same procedure. I got over 40K on it so I will have to do one of these soon. I just had a front wheel bearing fail on it.
An LPG space heater behind the bumper cover, (obviously when it's off the car), will make most of the plastic return to its original shape. Thermoplastic memory, or something. CVTs - if you're going to change the fluid, do the damn filters, as you have! Easy - just lots of bolts. Why wouldn't you?
So do you want the car level when you check the level using the overflow tube? and should the car be running? I have seen conflicting answers on that. Thank you again.
Good morning sir. My question is, i recently have a p0705 for neutral safety switch.. that doesn’t have anything to do with changing the fluid right? Because i ordered the neutral safety switch. And how much fluid did you put in?
What's the name of that doohickey you put up inside to turn the whatchamacallit way up inside there to let the fluid come out? Is that something they sell at Auto Zone or do I need to brave the wilds of eBay?
That is a bitch. I took off the driers side tire, the plastic wheel well cover (about 15 plastic push fasteners) then disconneted the entire tube from where it mounts to the transmission block. Carful there is an O-ring in there.
I have a 2018 Versa. When you removed the drain plug to get the proper transmission fluid level, was the engine running? Also what is the transmission fluid capacity? My manual does not tell me this information. Thank you.
I'm so angry that the Nissan service manual doesn't even mention the upper cartridge filter on the CVT. When I finally discovered it, and changed mine (at 91K Miles) it was really really filthy and clogged. Before changing it, the trans temp would get really hot (220 F) (I installed a temp gauge) AND it would downshift kind of funny on hills, in so far as the RPM would remain really high when coasting downhill, as if it was hanging in a low gear while coasting. AFTER getting that dirty plugged filter out, the shifting issue went away and the shifting from start was smooth as butter, moreover the fluid temp never goes above 205 now. Even with 4 people in the car, at freeway speeds (which used to send the temp to the 220-225 area) it runs cool as a cucumber. Had I known this, I'd have changed mine every 30K miles, seeing they're so cheap. Nissan is truly evil for not putting this filter on the regular service plan. EVIL! I'm sure I did irreparable wear to my trans running it so hot and straining the valve train by restricting the fluid flow with that plugged filter. GRRRRRR.
@@grampzquad I have a 2013 Sentra SL at 94,000km. It just recently started jerking and rpm moves up and down when accelerating or coming to a red light. Would a cvt transmission fluid change fix it?
I've paid Wilson motor Nissan in Logan Utah to service the transmission in my 2016 Sentra, five times. I just found out they didn't change the paper filter once. The last few times they charged $300.00. I'm pissed. I just had it serviced two weeks ago. I ordered the paper filter today along with a quart of Nissan cvt fluid. I'm changing the filter tomorrow. I have 210,300 miles on it. I may need to replace the transmission now. I feel betrayed by the dealership.

That's how you set the proper level of the fluid, otherwise, it may be overfilled.
Mine did not need reprogramming. It would be interesting to see if anyone else has been told they need reprogramming?
@@grampzquad I personally feel they said so in order to secure our giving them the vehicle so they can get the money for it. But you're not the only person I've seen make a video without mentioning it, so I'm fairly confident it's probably not a necessity.
😂😂😂😂
@@nightmover101035 Hello! Not sure if you're poking fun or if you found something in particular funny, but if you have any info, I'd be happy to hear it. If not, hope you have a good day.🙃 (PS, I realize it sounds incredibly sarcastic, but I'm being sincere.)
Same they told me the same thing plus with no filter
I've also seen mechanics on TH-cam take the pan off and clean that whole area as there were metal shaving there too that need to be removed.
Yes. That's not a bad idea. The pan just has a metal screen. The main filter is the cartridge on the side. Thanks for your comment.
Hello how do you check the transmission fluid level?
how many quarts did you pour in before starting the engine to warm up?
Looking to hustle up a Versa Note for Turo. Hopefully this will fix the issues!!
I have a 2015 Nissan CVT sentra sv is it about the same way as the versa to do
5mm hex bolt where is located? Is it next to the 19 mmm drain bolt?Or is it underneath of the 19 mm? Thanks
Thanks. This is a really great video! This'll help me out with my 2013 versa!
Respect man, your efforts have been helpful, very informative, thank you buddy! 😀
This video is excellent, but ive got one question. After filling up your fluid and running your car to warm it up, when you pull the plug will it stop draining the fluid once its no longer overfilled or will it just keep draining til its empty unless you put it back in?
@Grampzquad Great info, you are a lifesaver, I am not sure what kind of camera you have but if you are using an iPhone you just have to tap the screen where you are trying to get it to focus and should focus for a few seconds even if it's off-center
u need to drain fill a few times to fully swap liquid
Yes, I've seen videos that indicated that must be done.
How many bottles of CVT oil do you need?
My 2014 Versa didn't have a filter in that location. It's a base S model. Could it be inside the transmission pan? Maybe the American models are designed different? I just changed the fluid. Will change the filter next time if I can find it.
Is there a coolant line for the transmission to be flushed out ?? 2018 versus plus 1.6
how much would it cost for this job?
This is the same cvt that is in my mirage, the nissan branded parts were cheaper so I bought those.
Is it the same for Nissan versa 2021
Read good information sir.
Thank you❤🌹🙏
Excellent video. Very helpful. Thank you!
I’m assuming the versa note is the same?
Thank you for the video, do you know where is the filter located in a 2020 Nissan versa? is it same as this video, or is the one that have to be reached by removing the oil pan?
Nice job Mr
I'm wondring how many Litres of transmission liquide should we put in ?
El mejor tutorial para esto que he visto,,💪👍
Muchas gracias! Gracias por ver!
hello
thanks for this video
please can i have the reference of this oil filter to buy it
also how many should i put in the transmission
i have the car
thx
You know what you need to do. Secure that tube in there permanently cut the bowl off the top now you have yourself an easy accessible fill tube. You just can't check the level with it. That's what I did on 2017 Nissan
Once you take out the drain plug the tube unscrews with an Allen socket which allows you to drain the pan without removing it.
THAT WAS A GREAT INFORMATION I LIKE IT
Where can I get a transmission funnel> I have never seen one like that before.
Why brand of fluid is that youre using? Sorry if you mentioned it in the video and i didnt notice.
Silly question, after the 10 minutes run, when you second open the drain plug to drain the excess fluid I guess is with the engine shut off, because it sounds like the engine is running in the background
I think the engine needs to be running.
Yes engine needs to be running for sure.
THAT WAS A GREAT IMFORMATION I LIKE IT
Do the 2018 models have this as well? I’m gonna have to drain my girlfriends transmission and im so glad I stumbled upon ur channel! Please any advice helps!
As far as I know it should be similar.
How much fluid is needed on drain & refill with new oil?
GREAT VIDEO JUST ONE QUESTION WHAT BRAND IS THE TRANSMISSION FLUID??
It is a generic brand from Canadian Tire. It has the same spec as the Nissan brand.
Great thanks 👍
Quick qeustion sir. How many quarts did tou end up filling thwm up? Then for my undesatanding, after filling it and while at ilde you have to open the one plug with over fill, and while still ilding fluid witll come out until there’s nothing more coming. Is that mean bu its where to right right level?
I bought a nissan nv200 from japan with 70000km on it. Should i change tramission fluid. I have for a year. Will it have a catridge filter to
Gr8 video & info TY what type & capacity fluid ?
I wish I knew if there was an update video. If the car acted up again later
Is it necessary to reset the CVT fluid degradation counter?
Great video, how many quarts of fluid did it take?
Quick question being an owner of the same car, how has it been since the exchange??
new car to me 2014 Nissan maxima 161k my mechanic (with computer) said i have low oil pressure in the transmission you think filter would help. TIA nice video thanks for the help.
Fluid and filter change is a good place to start. A good transmission additive may help also. It's a lot cheaper than a transmission!
did you do a full flush? if not how much fluid di you drain, and how much did you replace? I want to do this on my Versa, but I don't know how much fluid to buy since it is a 7-quart transmission.
Is it the same process for a 2020 nissan versa ?
the cvt trans are trash engine is good but these trans go out at like 150k notice its a common thing. mine just started giving that slip feeling at 160k and basically needs 2 business days to get up to speed lol
How did you know much fluid to put in before getting car into regular temperature and draining at the end?
What year is the Versa you’re working on? Wondering if this is the same for a 2018.
I would've pulled the pan to drain the rest and cleaned the magnets
Thank you. You have helped me so much.
What brand of fluid did you use? Factory Nissan fluid or a aftermarket brand fluid??
I used a compatible brand from Canadian Tire. I think most autoparts stores would also have something to match.
I wish I knew if the code came back up after you did that
No codes! Thanks for watching!
Is this your first transmission fluid change or hace you done interval changes already?
Hi, Great Video. I have a Nissan March K13 with the same CVT it seems. There should be a metal filter just above the fluid cover. Does it need to be changed or cleaned? Or is it there for the car's life time? Thanks.
It's a metal screen. You can take it out and clean also. The cartridge filter is the most important.
How do I know how much fluid I need to put in?
Running and level
My question is the car need to be running to drain the excess fluid?
Yes
Good morning sir. My question is, i recently have a p0705 for neutral safety switch.. that doesn’t have anything to do with changing the fluid right? Because i ordered the neutral safety switch. And how much fluid did you put in?
How many quarter oil need ?
Thank you
Really well explained. Thanks for sharing
What is the colour for the transmission fuild for nissan versa 2012 model mine is quiet dirty so cant really see the colour. Please any help
Don't worry about colour. Just make sure you have CVT transmission fluid specifically for Nissan CVT .
Pls I used this same kind of a car but all off a sudden It doesn't move properly as it is meant to we have replaced the fuel pump, nussel pumps, plugs
Hi dear
Please tell me
how many liter for cvt.
4 or 5 liter type NS3
What's the name of that doohickey you put up inside to turn the whatchamacallit way up inside there to let the fluid come out? Is that something they sell at Auto Zone or do I need to brave the wilds of eBay?
Hey, thanks for watching! It's just a 5mm hex. Good luck!
but how do you take off that weird looking fill plug??
That is a bitch. I took off the driers side tire, the plastic wheel well cover (about 15 plastic push fasteners) then disconneted the entire tube from where it mounts to the transmission block. Carful there is an O-ring in there.
I have a 2018 Versa. When you removed the drain plug to get the proper transmission fluid level, was the engine running? Also what is the transmission fluid capacity? My manual does not tell me this information. Thank you.
Yes engine running
GRRRRRR.
I’ve been looking for 2024 Sentra cvt maintenance. Not sure what years apply.
@@trollsymctroll5361 Just take it to a transmission shop that does CVTs, they will no doubt service it better than Nissan ever would.
when i went to the Nissan dealer, they said it's not a good idea to replace/flush the fluid as it could make it worse. I have a 2013 Sentra SL.
That dealer doesn't know their own service procedures. CVT are a different animal.
@@grampzquad I have a 2013 Sentra SL at 94,000km. It just recently started jerking and rpm moves up and down when accelerating or coming to a red light. Would a cvt transmission fluid change fix it?
Yes absolutely! Change filter and fluid.
How did they explain not changing the filter?? Must be dirty Ute fans! 😂
@@grampzquad They explained it like this,....... Uhhh let me see if the mechanic billed a filter. Me- had he billed a filter I wouldn't be calling you to ask if the filter was changed.
I've been on the other side of the service writers desk. It's my experience that it's better to under promise and over deliver everytime. This can be accomplished in a direct, respectful and honesty way.
On a different note, I'm sad to see what your prime minister and his group is doing to your country.
@@grampzquad I just watched you winter hike. I can send you a Utah State Aggies stocking cap. No wonder you turned off comments on that vid. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. However BYU kaka.

@@I_am_archie we call those hats Touques.
I won't be bothered with the brake cleaner since there's still more in the CVT than in the cooler cover
That's nice
