  • A student asked me about the difference between Snake and Dragon because in the practice of Qi Gong and Martial Arts they look very similar.
    Dragon and Snake have many things in common, but in Chinese culture they also have very different expressions and concepts as we see in this video.

    Interesting that Dragon in mythology is the guardian of treasure. Perhaps cultivation of dragon energy is the guardian of our health, our greatest treasure? Thank you for this explanation and thank you again for the English subtitles!

      In Japan in Karate, Judô, Aikidô, there are two opposite principles: irimi and tenkan. Working with the energy or going against the energy of the attacker. I think the dragon is with his absolute power is more fixed in the irimi-principle (power against power) and the snake with his flexibility works more with tenkan (power with power). Maybe it's nonsens, but i think, it's logical under the aspect of the posibilities of the different bodies of this two animals

    I studied wing chun and I see snake techniques in this style. They said that the Wing chun style is the style of a crane and a snake together. But I have never seen an independent snake style... only snake techniques and forms in other styles or in movies .... I don't know the masters of the snake style.. Nothing is known about this style. Maybe it existed but was lost in the past. What do you think about it Dante? Thanks

    • @DanteBasili
      @DanteBasili  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ciao Nicola. In the eighties, when I was studying at the Beijing Institute of Physical Education, I met a taxi driver who handed down an exclusively snake style, taught to him by his father. He was very effective and impressive. But other than that I've never come across a standalone snake style, just inside other methods!

      @@DanteBasili you studied at a Beijing institute. Do you know about such a rare Emei fire dragon fist style?....Like most old styles it has few forms. Four if I'm not mistaken. It's something like a snake style. ... Your dragon style is also very interesting.How many forms does your style have.Is it southern or northern style?.Who made it?It is also a very rare style.Thanks Dante.

    • @DanteBasili
      @DanteBasili  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ciao Nicola, traditional Emei style I only saw practiced in Chengdu, Sichuan. Very interesting martially, but I don't know if it's the style you're talking about.
      The Dragon style that I teach is the first style of Kung Fu that I studied in Italy when I was still a kid. It was widespread in the Sino-Vietnamese community in France in the 1970s. For historical reasons in France there was a very active Vietnamese community, both in martial arts (not only Viet Vodao, also Chinese style) and in Traditional Medicine (Nguyen Van Ghi) and in Buddhism (Thic Nat Han). Like all quality things I made when I was very young I continue to perfect this style to this day.

    Thank you for this excellent, advanced level Study, Teacher Dante Basili.
    In terms of weapons the dragon forms look more suited to single sword and staff, while the snake to spear, and bow and arrow?
    So much to think about and learn here. Just this week I was thinking about opening one side and closing the other, and wondering if this is correct. It seems it depends upon the contexts of style and application.
    (Also, the snake style you display, reminds me of a boxing drill using a horizontal shoulder height washing line perpendicular to the boxers' guard, to duck, bob and weave beneath with a rising strike - I understand that it was invented by Black people incarcerated in the US Prison Industrial Complex. However, it is also reminiscent of Mike Tyson's 'peek-a-boo' boxing which combines a zig-zagging rectilinear/advancing foot work to close the distance.)

      Ciao. Spero nel video di spiegarlo bene: ambedue incarnano la spiralità e la flessibilità, ma con particolarità uniche. Se per spirito intendi la loro essenza simbolica parlo anche di questo a proposito di animali benefici e nocivi...
