  • The Four Snakes Taiji are a practice of Tuishou, handed down from the Chen style, which develops the same concept of the 扠 Cha technique of traditional Chinese wrestling.
The fact that this Tuishou is present only in the Chen style, which is considered an ancient Taiji, suggests that this working method is inherited from Shuai Jiao, because it is believed that wrestlings are more ancient than boxing.
This video documents the moment I studied this exercise for the first time with Master George Xu and a performance by Master Ma Hong who called it simply: one hand clockwise, the other counterclockwise.
Through the Cha technique the wrestlers can apply all 36 throwing techniques... very interesting for all Tui Shou practitioners.

What I absolutely love about your classes is that there are no weird uniforms, no ceremony, it's all about the substance of the art.

True Antonis. Formalities and rituals can be useful to give value to what you do. Good food is even better when served well. But when you get old and the time that remains is short, you look at the substance.

This reminds me of when I started taking martial arts in the 80s, I thought all this was magical, and impossible to learn.
Now I'm 55 years old and teaching what I thought was impossible! It really makes me happy. 👍

it is a very good exercise for balance and unbalance the opponent. Not as good in practical grappling wrestling and striking fighting in comparison with other modern martial arts disciplines.

In olympic wrestling, there’s a very similar motion that, in English, is called “pummeling.” I wrestled in secondary school and always find I understand taijiquan better when I view it through the lens of wrestling than striking. Great video as always, maestro!

"and always find I understand taijiquan better when I view it through the lens of wrestling" for me too... "pummeling"... very interesting! Grazie Angel.

I learned under a Guy who studied push hands with George Xu. Then I did pummeling in wrestling in the 90s. So the pummeling mostly had to directions or (Tai chi energies Ji and an) forward and down. Really good wrestling would sometimes have (pung) rising. Like he said in a video about testing the 4 directions (I assume Pung Lu Ji An) an exercise like pummeling can become a full art to destabilize someone. Learning Yang style push hands was interesting (good for striking in my opinion) but not as useful as the Chen (for wrestling) from the way it was taught.
So I coached Greco Roman wrestling for teens for a couple years pummeling was most of what I teach rather than technical throws and they were all hard to throw and good at finding openings. All this was from the Chen push hand that I learned. I'm definitely going to watch all these videos because I know I only got pieces of this style of push hands. All of these videos are amazing

Yes, but traditional martial art adds and uses the Fa Jing to make it powerful and explosive also in terms of striking.
