How do you feel about the master’s actual fighting abilities and do you think he can defend himself from a random attack by a skilled fighter? I know from experience that traditional martial arts are more effective in self defense than consensual combat (unless it’s against the same style and skill level ) but I do believe that they work against unsuspecting attackers. Be safe and thank you for your great content and respectful enthusiasm.

If you want to feel it very strong try standing on stake Zhan zhuang. Find a quiet place outside and a big healthy tree. Hold you hand (lau gung which you learned) facing below the navel (dan tien) in a triangle. Root your roots from your kidney pt in feet deep to the earth. Put a timer for 15 minutes, close your eyes, relax and deep belly breath or reverse breath, tongue up. See you in eternity :).

Hey Jesse, I can tell you that the moment Sifu Shi Heng Yi showed you these hand positions at 4:52 I (and other Craft practicioners probably as well) already knew what's going to happen, that's like most basic exercise in any forms of Craft that deal with concept of energy itself. So for you to get this feeling that quick I can tell you, you have potential and can develop more in the area, also I like his approach to this exercise as Sifu throws out the visualisation, which is fine if someone cannot grasp it at all. Great vid :)

I used to practice the iron shirt chi kung for about 3 years, I was able to do what the waster was doing , my skeleton was very stable and also I was able to control chi like him. there are some secrets that cannot be told though. I see why the video lasted just 10 minutes.

This particular wording is indeed very beautifully put but it is in fact a basic concept in Gongfu. The concept is called "Six harmonies" or "Liu he" in Chinese. This again is seperated into "Three intern harmonies" and "Three external harmonies". The three internal harmonies are: Attention in harmony with the mind, energy in harmony with attention, power in harmony with energy. The energy in harmony in attention is what he was refering to in the video. The three external harmonies are more simple. Shoulder and hips in harmony (moving in harmony), elbows and knees in harmony with, hands and feet in harmony.
I thought you might be interested in this. If you want to learn more about this concept look up "Six harmonies in gongfu" or "liu he in gongfu" and look for the "three internal harmonies".

@@Sliderone73NZyou cant access attention without the intention of that attention. Regarding the body awareness of energy attention is probably a better term here. If I think about
My right ear there will be more awareness to the ear as seen in a functional mri. There is receiving information and giving , a dialogue mind to body the quality and coding of what we deliver back to our body for example indeed I
Would call this intention and we are doing it both consciously and unconsciously. Conscious plus unconscious intention = are state of being

This is where you can develop a "third eye", deep listening, taking in everything they say, and when you say, speak fully, to the core of their being. Then you will also notice a difference for example if something is being received or not and if not, how to say it differently.
But this is really a mind body connection (which can create a lot of depth). I just don't want anyone new coming in here misunderstanding this and dismiss it as "oh ok he is just talking about focus." Yes he is, but he is talking about an internal connection to and between your being. That is something that is developed. It creates a lot of real depth in you. It's like any other muscle, but this is a soul/feeling-muscle that you can develop, if you will.

Jesse, I started Martial Arts training when I was 14.Traditional Japanese jiu Jitsu. My sensei always emphasized the spiritual aspect of Martial Arts & the power of the mind. He called it focus. As I got older, I sought out and learned about Meditation. Those teaching and practices stayed with me ( daily practice) until at 19, when I went into military service, and then after, getting immersed in what I call the material world. As I got involved in education, career, etc etc, I moved away from what I call my roots; my earlier training. I am now 75 and have gone full circle. I am meditating again, daily, exercising, and while not taking any formal classes, I am mindfully remembering my early trainings and watching your videos for inspiration, for remembering, and learning. This is a great asset for my mind, body, and spiritual well being, and probably more importantly staying focused and positive. I have lost almost everything material, but it is the teachings of my sensei, my daily meditations and your videos that help me stay on track. Thank you for doing them and sharing them with the world. They help (me) in more ways than I can say here.

@@americanosbadassius9292what is real? What your mind tells you about the world? What science understand? There is a branch of philosophy that is studying what is real and the debate is long as long as the human been.
Perception can be guided by the intention of the mind, the mind is deeply connected by a very intricate system of proprioreceptors in every inch of our body, in the skin and inside our body.
The communication is done by electrical current and chemical signals.
Chi is a natural sensation of these electrical waves that pervade our bodies. More than that. The simplest explanation of chi I have found, so it’s easy to understand: 氣 is traditionally the sum of two characters 米 (rice, carbohydrates), and 气 (air, oxygen), and so it represents the reaction between these two chemicals compounds.
The energy released during this combustion is called 氣, qi, chi.
So it doesn’t exist, but can you leave without it?
      Just saying.

Many years ago, my grandfather told me an interesting story about Chi and karate.
Premise: I am a former karate practitioner (mainly Goju-Ryu, Kenshinkan and some years of Kyokushin) even though it has been many years since I stopped. Back in the day, my grandfather was also a Karate practitioner, mostly Kempo, in his days as a investigative police in the '60s.
When it was My turn, he had stopped his practice for many years, but he still recalled many many lessons, especially from bunkai and sparring, that had helped him a lot in his law-enforcing work.
So, one day we're taking about karate, our trainings and our experiences and of course I'm being a bit blown away by a couple of anecdotes when his karate training proved extremely helpful in his work back in the day. At one point though, we mention Chi (or Ki, we used the japanese pronunciation) and he says to me:
"There is something thought that I never managed to wrap My head around. One day I'm in lesson, and there comes a foreign Master that was in exchange for a brief period. We start doing normal chudan tsuki and chudan uke.. all is going normal until this Master stops for a moment, promps me to strike him again and when he blocks, I suddently felt a surge of weakness and tiredness. Didn't fall, but My balance was a bit compromised for a second and even felt a bit light-headed. I ask him what the hell was that, and he explains it to me: it turns out that this guy was also very involved in the study of Ki, what is ir, how it works and such. So when he blocked, he focused his energy into his hikite: but he was visualizing "grabbing" some form of my energy from my stomach and 'pulling it away', sort of speak. And he integrated that in the simple hikite with the hand he wasn't using for his uke. I don't know what was it, I don't know how, I don't understand how it is possible but from that day on I never questioned that there *is* something going on, when we hear about Ki. Shame that nowadays is being so misinterpreted"
So.. of course: this is something that happened to my grandpa. I never experienced something like that, and I tend to think about all this stuff with the same amount of healthy skepticism that the next guy.
But watching this video, the memory came rushing back and just wanted to share 😂

    • @squidsleap
      @squidsleap 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +105

That was a cool story. Thanks for sharing.
My grandmother was born and raised in Okinawa. She practiced judo and studied ki. She moved to Canada after the war and began training Canadian military forces in basic practical judo. Stuff that could be learned quickly enough to help the troops. This is where she met my grandfather who was doing a joint training camp with the Canadians.
He was so taken by her ability to throw around full size men when she was only 100lbs. She credited the study of ki bringing awareness to her internal structure for being able to do that.
When I was little and would fall and get hurt as little kids do (my family lived at her house for yrs growing up) she would come over and tell me to focus my mind on giving her the pain while she put her hands close to the injury and the pain would feel better. I'm mostly sure there was a huge placebo effect here as I already regarded her as some super woman haha but when a placebo works is it still not viable?
Even into her 70s she could still throw me at will on the mats, and it's not like I didn't train. I just wish I trained with her more. She would show me basic things, but said she is not a master, and not qualified to teach, I would need to seek out my own teacher her to move forward. In the 80s, especially after the popularity of the karate kid movie the chances of finding a master to teach was very slim. Too many people out for the money and sadly, I never found one.
She passed away a long time ago in her late 90s, born in 1911 she was a great connection to a time before Japan's industrialization.

The most clear phorm of Chi is orgasm, a massive release of energy. Many professional boxers refuse to ejaculate for long periods and store unusual amounts of chi in their body. This is a simple form of iron body. When you consume food, food is broken down and becomes a kind of chi that nourishes your body. Chi manifests as body heat, a easily observable aspect of existence. Life force exists in your voice and is sent out thru your eyes.

No. Chi (ch'i) means "vital energy". It's a key principle in Chinese medicine and applied in Chinese martial arts. Chi flows through pathways in the body called meridians, with many points along those meridians used in acupuncture to regulate or correct chi flow imbalances. The state of the body that is released and energetic is Sung. Yi is similar to our notion of consciousness; it means mind and intention, though the term is used somewhat differently in martial arts versus Chi Gung or Chinese medicine. Cultivating and directing Chi requires focusing with Yi. Only when Chi is cultivated and enhanced can it be converted into Jin (jing) which is power in various forms. So each of those terms are different but related to the same system of energy in the human body and in the world around us.

As someone who worked in healthcare for years (first aid/CPR, medicine administration), and having studied physical therapy, I have a hypothesis about what we call "chi". Chi is basically a simplified way of talking about circulation. Blood circulation, breath circulation, the flow of signals in the nervous system, etc.
Think of how we view optimal health. If our blood pressure, breathing, and reflexes are healthy, we are considered in optimal health. And what's the opposite of that? High blood pressure, breathing problems, and nerve damage. This is reflected in the anatomy chart of Chinese traditional medicine, especially in pressure points.
The circulation theory doesn't limit itself to anatomy, however. Physics, economy of motion, the flow of movement, all of these tie into the theory of "chi". This is why so many martial artists focus on flexibility and fluidity.
So chi was never meant to be something mystical. It is merely a reminder of the importance of smooth circulation and the physics of fluidity.

Not to mention lymph flow 💫

    • @nyhyl
      @nyhyl 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

There is a lot truth in your thoughts. After all the concept goes that chi follows attention and blood follows chi. Chi not so much the blood circulation but rather the liveliness/vitality/activation of bodily functions in a certain area. The blood follows increases where chi is flowing. Chi is an abstract term to talk about vitality in generall. A healthy body, a body that works well is a body with good chi flow. Chi is like a potential and the bodily fluids and functions are what follow suit.

The first time I tried it I felt not only energy between my hands, but also a jolt/shock to my system that I can't describe with words, however it was amazing! The energy was strong enough to almost become uncomfortable(Probably just because it was my first time doing it) and I could feel a sensation on the palms of my hands for about 15 minutes afterwards that slowly dissipated. I've done it 3 times since and although I could definitely feel the chi it wasn't as strong as the first time. Thank you thank you thank you :)

    • @ikkuhyu4395
      @ikkuhyu4395 หลายเดือนก่อน

It probably wasn't as strong the following times because you tried/expected it too hard. In my experience, especially in the beginning, the right state of mind, namely first be relaxed, then bring in focus, is very important. Later you will need not be as relaxed. A second thing that helps is to eat something about 10 minutes before summoning the energy. A third is to summon the energy from inside your plexus and focus on how it flows through your arms, into your hands, a couple of times before focusing it in the space between your hands. Hope that helps you.

@@MrCmon113 Is it really so far fetched that there are some yet unexplained biomechanical interactions or perhaps even some lower level fundamental energy that life itself takes advantage of on a quantum scale?
I mean, we haven't even pinned down the quantum interaction by which mass applies the force of gravity, aka warps space time. The deeper our understanding of these fundamental forces get, the more mysterious the nature of the universe becomes. To top that off, literally everybody experiences gravity! It's the most apparent fundamental force, and yet we've just barely managed to develop theories that merely suggest why particles with mass miraculously possess gravity.
Now, imagine the possibility that there are other fundamental forces at work in the fabric of the universe that are not so obviously present, and you may get the impression that there is still an absolutely staggering amount of things to learn about the true nature of energy transfer amongst matter all around us. For all we know, the granularity of these interactions could be infinitesimal, destined to forever evade deterministic metrics.
Modern atomic theory is just barely two centuries old, while humans have been around for tens of thousands of years. Meaningful discovery and its science require both patience and an open mind.

For people who are skeptical about this, I think a good way to look into this subject is like a hyper focused "Mind-Muscle Connection" like we use in fitness.
Just like you do on certain gym exercises, depending on how aware you are about one muscle you will activate that specific muscle a lot more during your series.
When master Shi Heng Yi mentioned "I can't break a brick with my hands if I'm thinking about food" I immediately had this realization, it's exactly what we are doing on the gym.
In my opinion "Chi" used for martial arts could just be the way those ancient masters named this thing that we call "mind-muscle connection" nowadays.

You're not far from the truth. However, I believe that chi is better than just focus, because the human brain is very limited in the number of things it can focus on simultaneously. To put your body into the right alignment for a technique, you might have to focus on 15 joints and 26 muscle groups at the same time, which is humanly impossible. Chi simplifies this process by letting the subconscious mind deal with it. That's why chi is something you feel, not something you think about. With enough practice, you just need to visualise the flow of chi, and your body falls into alignment instinctively. Kind of like dancing.

@@wirewyrm01 it sounds a bit like a combination of deep concentration on the task, and slowly building up a muscle memory. The more focused you are on the details of a movement, a kata f.eks, the faster you will build muscle memory. And Muscle memory, is pretty subconscious. Anyway it is just phsyical and mental training. No magical power. Visualisation is a great tool for just about any form of training.

I was taught by an amazing 85 years old Sensei, called Moritoshi Nakaema and he was OLD SCHOOL, he taught a couple of students, myself included the technique you were trying at 5:00, you can feel something like a ball forming between the hands, it's pretty weird as you can definitely FEEL it, but there is nothing in between and people can't touch it... I made the mistake of touching both hands and my hands went numb for a few second. Pretty weird.
There was no practical Hadouken or anything like it, but it was a pretty cool breathing exercise with some interesting results which I can't comprehend, even today.
Not sure if it's related, but I went from breaking boards to breaking ice blocks a few months after learning this. It definitely helped having a couple extra months of training, and the breathing and intent also helped, but I still get a weird feeling thinking back then.

As someone who's studied hypnosis, the exercise he had you do is one we'd call a "convincer," or something to "prove" trance to the subject. He had you breathe in and out for a bit, settling you down into at least a relaxed state, if not a light trance, then added an important-seeming gesture around your hands, had you focus attention, and then an open-ended suggestion that you were going to feel something. Our brains will make something for us to feel in those situations almost no matter what: you can also pick just about any spot on the body, focus your attention there while breathing in and out in a controlled fashion and eventually feel something simply because you're expecting to. Also, with your hands that close to each other, you're likely going to pick up on the warmth radiating from the other hand, even if your brain doesn't produce some other sensation.
The good thing is he wasn't making the extravagant claims that a lot of other chi practitioners make. Some of what he said, I'd agree with if worded slightly differently; body mechanics and proper rooting of the stance, etc., for example. The power of focused attention to affect internal states and whatnot. There's another exercise I've done where you close your eyes and point behind you, swinging your arm as far to the other side as you can. Open your eyes and note where you pointed. Spend a minute breathing and imagining that your arm is made of rubber, it's spaghetti, it's really loose and stretchy, etc. Now do the same thing and see how much farther you went with that arm.
No chi needed for that, but it's still quite impressive how much an effect we can get just from a couple moments of relaxed but concentrated focus.

We experience "Qì force" every time we so much as scratch our ear.
氣 "Qì" is an ancient metaphor that the Chinese created 2,500 years ago to describe real phenomena that they could observe and even refine.
Similarly, 400 years ago in the West, scientists said that materials were combustible because they contained a substance called "phlogiston". It turned out that "phlogiston" never existed, but that did not stop people observing and controlling the very real process of combustion. Over time, scientists came to properly understand that process, thus giving them even more control over it.
In 2024, I feel talking of 氣 "Qì" only mystifies the phenomena that the Chinese observed thousands of years ago. I practise internal TCMA and everything I do involves 內功 - Nèigōng. But I never talk about 氣 "Qì". I feel it behoves all TCMA instructors to speak in modern terms and not hide behind esoteric language. Many instructors use such language to mask their lack of skill. Others who do have skill use such language because they do not have the modern terms to explain what they do.
To do so in the 21st century is like talking about "phlogiston" instead of describing combustion in modern terms: a high-temperature exothermic, redox chemical reaction between a reductant and an oxidant.
I doubt my opinion will be popular among practitioners of Chinese martial arts.
    All the best from Madrid!

Phlogiston is a separate term from a different culture that can serve as a rudimentary analog to Chi.
In a reductionist Materialistic view, phlogiston may not "exist" as it does not conform to the paradigm that Scientific Materialism has posited.
I would say that when you are seeking to skillfully convey concepts to those unfamiliar with Qu, then using "modern"(see: Euro-centric Western thought) terms will certainly assist you in helping others.
But this too has its limits, and if you can dialogue with those familiar with these concepts in order to seek greater understanding within that system of thought...I think you should.
Being skillful means knowing how to apply your knowledge, not necessarily needing to pick one as true and one as false.

After that, my legs didn’t hurt anymore and I actually felt like I could’ve stood in horse stance for an hour at that point. My teacher basically told me that was qi, I just used qi.

Hello, I'm 33 years old and from Manitoba Canada.
I wanted to share my very real experiences with everyone because I believe it's so important to keep an open mind.
I grew up in a martial arts home. My dad, brother and I trained in jiu-jitsu for a many years. Bruce Lee was always in the vhs player and DBZ on the tv.
With that being said, energy and chi were no strangers to our home.
It wasn't until I was 17 when I started dating a certain girl that I realized how very real energy/chi is.
To make a very long story short, this girl came from a very religious background. She told me many things about religion, demons, shadow people you name it.
One thing that stood out to me was the conversation about her dad using kabbalah (witchcraft I believe).
She told me her dad would do EXACTLY what you're doing with your hands in the video except he would do it by a running water tap.
He would create a ball of energy and put it under the running water to pushed the flow around.
The idea of creating a ball of energy and moving it with my hands definitely peaked my interest.
She showed me how to place my hands and what to do and at the time my imagination kinda just took over.
I started reading books on it, researching online and practicing by myself.
After so much practice and relaxing my mind something happened... I could feel this ball of energy between my hands.
It would expand, shrink and always felt like it was flowing. If I lost focus for a second.. poof it would be gone and I'd have to start over.
3 years later of living together in the middle of the night I experienced ONE of the most terrifying paranormal nightmares come true.
That night was the end of my relationship with that girl. Her dad turned a one and a half hour trip into 20 minutes to pick her up.
That's a very long true story that I'll have to save for another time but onto my next experience!
    Experience #2
I'll make this a short one.
I was experimenting with mushrooms because I thought it would enhance my spiritual awareness and what I ended up getting was more than I asked for.
After a lot of seeing things, feeling things and crying my eyes out I later found myself in the backyard next to the fire and more relaxed than ever.
There were two friends sitting with me.
After staring into the fire for so long it was like I was hypnotized or one with the fire.
This is where the some crazy stuff happened.
I felt this urge to touch the fire and so I did. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I was touching the wood, the embers, the fire not even a single hair was singed.
The friends sitting next to me were in shock. They could see everything I was doing and took no psychedelics themselves.
Years later and learning more about energy, chi, vibrations, frequencies etc. I truly believe that with the right mindset and focus you can open your mind to everything that is natural but has been shrouded and labeled unnatural because of strategic distractions.
Just imagine how strong your being would be without distraction... just being one with everything at once.

Yogis have known this energy for years. What is called Chi is known as Prana in India, and for a much longer time it was known there. Applying your life energies you can do many things. Monks generally only use the potential of Muladhara, and Manipurika only.

I will leave the following for those who have an open mind......... everything in the universe is on a fractal pattern, same concept/structure just in different scales/dimensions........ aside from that, we find an energy field & bio field surrounding moving bodies (celestial bodies & organic bodies), these fields are in the mathematical shape called a 'Torus', this Magnetic\Torus field also has its own behavior (depending how strong the field is) of movement, which is called Toroidal & Poloidal, the Toroidal direction (horizontal) is the long way around the Torus field, the Poloidal direction (vertical) is the short way around the Torus field. When someone who is very aware of its own body mass, then they are aware of how it behaves. The Human Body has 2 Torus fields (just like our Planet Earth) generating/emitting at all times, one surrounding the entire body and the other is surrounding our hearts, The Human Heart is a resonating chamber that has been scientifically measured to emit a field that stands out about 3 feet from the heart, that 3 feet radius field does affecting our brain activity. When you start looking into meditation & 'astral projection' is when you are aware of how your 'Energy Field' is behaving. A person like a 'Chi Master' would have all these capabilities attuned since they are aware of it. When they start the pattern of movement they are aware of the energy/torus field that starts generation within their limbs (arms & legs), it's all about how strong the torus field is that the individual is making it out to be, willing it forging it out of their minds. Mind over Matter!

I am 66. When I was 20 I met a man that was to become my martial arts instructor and for 2 years my roommate.
I was a big guy and worked Security at concerts and as a Bouncer/bartender to pay for school. I was around 295 and my mentor told me he could knock me across the room without laying a hand on me. I had heard of this kind of thing but felt pretty confident I could take the hit. To make his point he stood on one leg and merely snapped his hand from facing toward him to facing away extending his arm only slightly. I was uprooted and flew across the room landing on a pinball machine.
I went on to study Chi/Qi/Prana as a means to heal. It is more than real and Western medicine is too dense to comprehend it. Literally too dense- Western Medicine is all about the material person with no regard to other aspects. I highly recommend learning all you can to optimize your health.

"This is what internal Kung Fu styles, Tai Chi and Qi Gong is about."
Should that be read as: "This is what internal Kung Fu styles (such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong) is about"?
Or as: "This is what internal Kung Fu styles *and* Tai Chi *and* Qi Gong is about"?
