I took my first long trip from Virginia to New York (about 400 miles) with my BMW i4 eDrive40 a couple of weeks ago. I left with a full state of charge and made my first stop at an Electrify America charging station 243 miles away. What shocked me was that I was still showing 110 miles of range remaining. That's 343 total miles including miles traveled + remaining range. That's far greater than the 282 miles published as the official range by BMW. I am very happy with my decision to buy the BMW over a model Y or a Kia EV-6. Range is great. Build quality is light years ahead of Tesla. Ride and handling are superb. And I find the minimalist design of Tesla interiors to be boring and appliance-like. BMW has been making EV's for a decade now. It shows.

BWM still have reliability issues with the toasters on the front's of the cars, owners have reported after inserting a slice of bread, they fail to toast or eject them either. I'd wait until BMW fix this issue.

Model 3 Performance compared to BMW I4 - great review I will post link
Interior - quality - Interior material is just adequate (not a big fan of SensaTec) but build quality is excellent. However the best part of this car's interior is the sound insulation. While not as sensory-deprivation-chamber-quiet like the iX, it's still amongst the quietest cars I've driven/ridden in, and it includes my parents' 2016 S-class (the 18" wheels help). This alone sets the i4 apart from the Model 3, and 3rd party test shows it's about 4-6 dB quieter (which is very significant since dB is logrithmic) at highway speed. In reality it translates to a truly premium experience on the highway that my M3P was just not able to provide and was my least favorite thing about the Model 3. In my Model 3 I often turn up the music to hear it better but in my i4 I have turned on the music just to not fall asleep.

My iX1 is due in January. I got the eDrive30 under the EV discount threshold when it was new on the market before all the price rises. I preferred it to the Tesla Y because the interior was nicer for me, I really dislike minimalist look interiors (opinion). The exterior I think alsp looks better, less like an egg and more like an SUV (opinion). I also think it is going to be far less common on the road. To me, the Tesla Y is like Holden Commodore of 80s/90s, they are just becoming so common that despite them being great cars I don't want one because of that.

A Ford CEO took an F150 lightning on a road trip from Bakersfield Calif to Las Vegas Nev , it did not go well he had trouble finding chargers, some were broken (but no mention on web site) and at one point he waited 40 minutes for a charge that only gave him 40 miles, it’s seems that those owners who have problems with their Teslas are not always dealt with in an expedient or honest manner, I’m surprised that no Tesla owners from Arizona haven’t called saying my batteries dead from the 110F heat we’ve had for 31 days, or how half the range is lost at minus 20 worse yet at minus 30, these are topics you avoid like the plague ,but something potential owners deserve to know.

A bit over 400 km range in this day and age is way too little. Add kids, bagage and cold weather and what will you have, 300km? Double the range and it would be an interesting proposition. Once longer ranges are available in a couple of years time, the resell value will be low. Also the EV prices for new cars will most likely be lower. Financially it doesn’t make sense to buy an electric luxury vehicle currently, as a company car yes, but privately?

BMW are already reasonably priced in Europe and the US. In Australia, it's a different matter. I have only ever bought Mercedes and BMW cars second hand, a few years old, and let someone else take the hit on price. There seem to be a cliche of buyers in Australia that like to show off that they can afford to overpay for a car. The German brands tap into that buyer mentality.

I'd maybe slum it and get the id4 or Enyaq (more space) as they have decent efficiency (vs non-Teslas) - but once Model Y / Juniper launches there'd be no competition. BMW did much better imo with the i3! Far more innovative, ugly, but gret space, "just" needed a more modern battery & motor. These ix1/ix3 - meh. Get the new Mini Countryman that's cheaper and effectively the ix1 if you must.

I like tesla safety, tech and charging infrastructure and how the car can be continuously updated with all in-house programming. Don’t like the look, quality, Confort , noise .. the BMW ride and highways speed Confort and driving pleasure are very important.. quality is important for the luxury buyers.. again I respect and consider the tesla.. but after driving them I am left wanting more luxury and comfort from the seats, the sound insulation and overall some cheap looking. Rear taillights.. they need to improve the quality

Very nice but where’s their chain of BMW Charging Hubs ? Every single Tesla comes with a whole heap of chargers with reasonable costs per kilowatt whereas BMW drivers have to rely on what other chargers are about and pay through the nose per Kw. These old manufacturers seem to miss the point that its not just the car its the refuelling too all in one bundle. Maybe if these wonder cars can travel 500+ miles per charge then a reasonably priced charging network won’t be needed but the reality is they will be nowhere near that range so users will have to buy from the likes of Ionity or BP who are eye-wateringly expensive especially if you don’t have a pay-monthly account.
We have an iX3 in the family, its quite nice but not in any way competition to our Model Y long range. If I won the Lotto tomorrow I would still keep our MYLR as I just don’t see anything thats near to it on the market …..yet

There is a lot more to a car then software. It is a physical experience and the German car companies have been building cars much longer then Tesla, it's not all about range, power and charging speed. Your spending ten's of thousands on a new car, you have to like the feel, the look, the experience. Tesla's technical advantage's are exaggerated and it is probably going to compete with major innovations from German car makers in mass produced electric cars within 5 - 10 years.
German companies have already developed electrical engines with advances and they are starting to put gearing systems that are designed to maximise torque efficiency, that fit within the EV drive system. The Germans will leverage their strengths; They will have a state of the art gearbox fitted right at the wheels and maximise power and efficiency. I suspect part of the decision by Tesla manufacturing in Germany is to build a relationship with German companies and form some collaboration.

    • @stevehayward1854
      @stevehayward1854 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@alexandermelbaus2351 You would like to think that Teslas technological advantages are exaggerated but they are not exaggerated at all.
German car manufacturers have been caught napping and it will take 10 years to get to were Tesla is today. The production techniques developed by Tesla means that they can make very large profit out of every car sold, unlike German firms who make a huge loss out of every EV they make and just a small profit out of ICE vehicles.
German manufacturers have traditionally made up for small profits by the profits made in dealerships, but EV's do not need the maintenance or the amount of repairs that ICE cars do and with the Tesla sales model, the end of the dealership is coming to an end.
Teslas production techniques are showing the traditional car manufacturers up

    • @alexandermelbaus2351

@@stevehayward1854 Across the German car companies and the industry within Germany they have experience building everything from motor bikes, submarines, jet planes, helicopters, trucks, tanks. F1 race cars. Germany is one of the countries at the forefront of creating different metals, precision tools, advanced parts. Germany supplies the best scientific equipment and chemicals. German ingenuity has a history of finding scientific solutions to it's problems. They are on the back foot but expect to see great innovations now they are directing their efforts towards electric cars. This is going to be good, I don't know why you sound so negative about it.
Car manufacturers do not rely on services for income, dealership's do. The engine and gearbox rarely needs parts that are supplied by the manufacturer. Most of all the other parts are the same. I would think that all car manufacturer's make more money from smash repairs. Oil, leads, spark plugs, coolant and brake pads are made normally by other companies. There are some parts like hoses which would be common, but it is dealerships and car mechanics that are going to suffer here mostly.
