  • This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from an 8-day solo backpacking expedition that I took to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I covered ~90 miles in August 2019; notable sights included Yellowstone Lake, Thorofare Trail, Yellowstone River, the Absarokas, Thorofare Ranger Station, South Boundary, Thorofare Creek, Two Ocean Plateau, Mariposa Lake, Snake River, Continental Divide Trail (CDT), Heart River, Heart Lake, Mount Sheridan & the Heart Lake Geyser Basin. This was my first backpacking trip west of the Mississippi, first time backpacking above 7000' and first time sleeping outdoors in Grizzly Country. My starting pack weight for this trip was ~38 lbs.

    Admire your doing it solo in the heart of Grizzly bear country, I've always been reluctant to backpack around them with less than a group of 5 which I've read almost ensures no bear problems.

    Thanks for sharing your trip. That is an interesting part of the park that I hope to see some day! I always enjoy the mountain overlooks, especially when the trip up is not life threatening, like Granite Peak in MT. But the whole trip was cool.

    Aside from the unexpected company, did you enjoy campsite 6Y2? We have are trip planned out for august and have 6Y2 locked in, but also notice 6T2 is available and wondering if I should switch. Great video, thanks for the footage!

      Very jealous that you'll be in the Thorofare this year! I had planned to be there the week of the big flood. The unexpected company was the best part of 6Y2. 6Y2 is fine but I think anyone would say that 6T2 is the better site.

    I enjoyed the video Layne. Looks as good as I have imagined. The only part of that hike that I have done is the Heart Lake trail. I may have even stayed at the same campsite you did back in the '70's. The worst mosquitoes I have ever experienced. So thick it was almost like breathing them in. Would love to make the Torofare hike but at my age and physical condition the only way it is going to happen is on horse back. Retirement is not too far away so I need to get myself and my horse into shape! I did a lot of hiking in YNP and GTNP during my time there but with only one day off a week I was limited to mostly day hikes or one night hikes.

    • @LayneComfort
      @LayneComfort  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Leon and for sharing your experiences! I am very glad the skeeters weren't bad the nights I spent at Heart Lake - they can make the time miserable. I passed 2 horsepacking groups in the Thorofare (and the trail was covered in horse droppings) so you can definitely get out there and do it on horseback!

    Awesome video, thank you for sharing this. I wanted to ask how you felt about your pace. I'm planning on doing the exact same route but I only have 5 days to work with, so I'd be having to do mostly 15ish mile days. It looks like you were able to get to your campsites with plenty of daylight left but I wanted to see how it was.

    • @LayneComfort
      @LayneComfort  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Physically it wouldn’t be terribly difficult to do 15 miles/day. There is a ton of flat land over that 90 mile route. For me the 8-day pace was perfect to enjoy that incredible area. What time of year?

    This was a great video. I've done the thorofare trail twice now, and going back to do it again in September. Awesome country. I too would love to know your gear list and food list if you still know that. 38 lbs is around as light as you could go. What did you finish at? I've never climbed Sheridan, so to see that was my favorite part. Thank you again!

    • @LayneComfort
      @LayneComfort  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome that you've been out there twice and are getting to go again! A truly incredible land. Sheridan was breathtaking, definitely recommend hitting the top and looking out over the Thorofare (and much more) if you ever get the chance to do so. My finishing pack weight was probably ~23ish pounds but that's just a guess. Here is my gear list notwithstanding a couple minor changes: lighterpack.com/r/1sny72

    Let me ask you something...if you happen to know the answer to it. What do you think it is about humans, camped in a tent, if you did everything right and don't smell of food, that makes grizzly bears know that you are not something to be messed with?

    • @LayneComfort

      Thank you! The Yellowstone Backcountry Office was very helpful in planning. A permit is required to backcountry camp in Yellowstone NP and they have all the application info available on their website as well as a backcountry planning guide.
