  • It’s the 14th installment of my walk across the country on the CDT I hiked from Dubois, Wyoming to West Yellowstone, Montana. I backpacked 138 miles - the majority of which were through the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park. I got rained on (nothing new there), saw geysers erupt (including Old Faithful) and ate lots of wild strawberries. We celebrated crossing into a new state and behaved like typical hiker trash in tourist towns.
    The Continental Divide Trail continuesd to deliver both excellent and challenging backpacking. Stay tuned for the northernmost section as we travel along the border of Idaho and Montana for several hundred miles.

    Your voice commentary really does take your videos to another level above other thru hike vlogs.

    I love when there's that one bug who keeps you company. I want to be that kind of bug in a future life--a temporary companion. :)

    Thanks for another great video. Once again, your voiceover commentary is exceptional. And the Peacock at the zoo analogy for being a thru hiker at Yellowstone Village is so spot on. Perfect. 😀😀 Thanks again so much for these videos. It really is a wonderful way to start my week. Peace and happy trails to you and Kid.

    I'm interested in this hike because you're going close to the most saturated grizzly bear country in the lower 48. The Continental divide goes right through it. I don't know how much betrayal is diverted to the highway because this is the most remote area in the lower 48. It's called the Thorofare-named because it is the Thruway for most of the large migratory animals in the lower 48.

      We carried bear spray and practiced bear safety. It's definitely an extra consideration!

    So, “thru hiker burnout”, is a real thing. Any comments about how to cope with “thru hiker burnout”?

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  ปีที่แล้ว

      totally. For me, I try to allow myself a zero in town, and maybe cut back a little on mileage - pack out my favorite snacks, etc. and if that doesn't work, my stubbornness usually takes over.

    I noticed your partner was carrying a Reyr gear compact fly fishing rod in this video. For someone that wouldn't mind fishing along the way, where do you think its worth while to start carrying a fly/tenkara rod? Where did he start carrying his? Did he carry it the rest of the way? Did he find he fished much?

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes! So the fly fishing situation was a sad saga of mail mixups. But long story short, we hoped to have it for the Wind River Range especially. And ended up carrying it I believe from Dubois to Somewhere in Idaho. Kid gets very focused on crushing miles and didn't use it very much to be honest. It also depends how many fishing licenses you want to buy. Overall, I'd say everything north of New Mexico has plenty of fishing opportunities with the Winds being the highlight for fishable water features. The idaho/montana border area is also pretty dry so maybe top sections would be CO and WY.
