    Thanks for watching everyone! I genuinely appreciate it.
    Just for clarity, I am aware of the audio issue (the right ear problem), and it will be fixed in future videos.
    I am also aware of the fact that "gong gong" is not a name; I should've checked that before completing the script. I apologize.
    Again, thanks for watching, despite the flaws, you all rock!

    The googly eyes (white circle with black center) are the direct inverse of the Donut (black circle with white center) - analogous to evelyn's absurdist response vs joy's nihilist response to everything everywhere all at once! What a masterpiece!

      I love how even the center of the googly eyes is never completely in the center. It's chaotic and adapts to the movements of whoever its stuck to, thus also adding this idea of "it's okay if it's not totally perfect, you'll adapt, and you might as well see the humor in it along the way"

      There is more than that. The third eye is a religious symbol in Buddism and Indian culture. When Evelyn put on the googly eye on her head, it suggests she has looked through the multiverse (but in a hilarious way). "The third eye refers to the gate that leads to the inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment" From Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_eye

      I'm not Chinese but as a queer black woman this movie absolutely destroyed me. When Joy was begging her mother to let her go, and saying they only hurt each other, and her mother took the time to actually understand her, I realized how desperately I needed that with my mother. There were times when I was depressed and suicidal and simply wanted my mother's comfort, but she could never give it in the way I needed. I never expected that pain to be so perfectly articulated on screen.

    I've seen films where characters are decapitated, dismembered, gutted, and tortured, and I handled them without blinking. And yet, in a film where some guy just gives himself a few paper cuts, I literally had to turn away in my seat. THAT is an achievement in sound design.

We are able to know exactly what's coming and how much it sucks to get a paper cut and because of that it makes the scene more intense

    I think about the googly eyes a lot. The thing that stuck with me is that Evelyn puts it on only after she got encouragement from all the waymonds in the universe. And not only is the eyes a direct opposition of the bagel, it is also Waymond's--his signature tools to help him be kind and loving, as has been reinforced by Evelyn in the movie's first part--signifying how his influences finally affected her and her worldview.

      Me, watching the trailer: "Hah, googly eyes."
      Me, seeing that moment in the film: *emotionally raw, inspired, and moved to tears*
      That GOOGLY EYES are such a POWERFUL statement of... hope? It's hard to summarize just what they represent. "Optimistic Nihilism" has had a moment as of late. "Nobody is born on purpose. Nothing really matters, and isn't that just a LITTLE freeing?" is voiced, in one way or another, in a lot of recent pop culture. EEAAO isn't quite the same thing, though. In an unfeeling, infinite multiverse where every decision is already made, where everything has, or will happen, where each choice dooms one version of you to the bad timeline, what could POSSIBLY matter? What's in front of you. What you CHOSE to care about.
      There's a Mr. Rogers quote. “Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.” That's ultimately the message of EEAAO. Evelyn choses to love her daughter. To love her silly, foolish husband. To love the her who made all of those "wrong" decisions and the life it left her with. Confronted with the infinite possibilities of a single mortal life. A world where she's famous, a world where she's powerful, a world where she saved the world, a world where she doomed the world, a world where life never came to be and everyone is just rocks, and, yes, a world where people evolved to have hot dogs for fingers, she choses plain old Evelyn, with her failing business, her tax troubles, and her silly husband and her daughter that isn't what she expected, but is still worthy of being loved. Of making that active decision to continue to love that person, each and every moment. Viewed through Joy's lense, the infinite multiverse is a dead end, if you've seen and experienced EVERYTHING, what's the point of anything? Viewed another way, from another perspective, one that took Waymond to show her, it shows that decisions MATTER. All of those choices that put her on her current path mattered, because SHE made them. So why not chose to love and embrace the life she made?

      Someone also blew my mind earlier by observing that the Bagel a black circle with a white dot in it, is basically the Yin, and the googly eye, a white circle with a black dot in it, is the Yang, making the 2 of them the complement of each other. Which is very representative of Joy being the Yin, therefore dark, moody, depressed, being finally balanced by founding her Yang in Evelyn at the end of the movie.

    Saw this movie twice in 2 days. Tried to go for 3 but didn't work out. It might be one of my favorite films to date if not ever. Certainly laughed and cried, but the main thing about this film that I connected with is the infinite potential we all have and our ability to decide how we want our lives to be. It's our choice. And yes, given the sheer muchness of everything, it can be easy to fall into nihilism like Joy, but things become magic when you choose to navigate it with compassion, love, happiness, etc. Either way, "nothing matters" is a true sentiment. Nothing matters in the grand scheme of things, but you can decide what matters to YOU. It's all subjective and it's all a game. Have fun. And in the words of Waynond, "Be kind..." Love you all.

      but your purpose should be personal, what you decide matters to you. and this movies says if you get to choose your purpose, then why not pick one that makes you and others happy.

    I think what really got me about Hsu's performance is that she got comparatively few scenes to actually be Joy, since so much of her time was taken up being Jobu, yet I feel like I have just as strong an understanding of her as I do Evelyn and Waymond. She communicated so much genuine teenage angst, confusion, uncertainty, frustration, and exasperation in just a few scenes that she felt like just as strong a character as any of the others while STILL being terrifying, weird, hilarious, and sympathetic as Jobu.

    This might actually be my favorite movie of all time, and I've seen a lot of great films. This movie hit me on every level, and every aspect of the production was on point and added to the story telling. I feel that, as good as the sound, choreography, editing, cinematography, soundtrack, and direction were, the best part at the end of the day was the acting. Everyone brought something to this film and this cast was special. Michelle Yeoh proved beyond all doubt that she is a very versatile and gifted performer who can handle any role. Ke Huy Quan offered an excellent performance and in many ways was the emotional heart of the film. Stephanie Hsu knocked my socks off. They all had to act out multiple versions of the same character, an interesting challenge. This movie is helping me find gratitude day to day for the life I have, not the one I could have or wished I had. It came into my life right when I needed it and for that I am thankful. another thought & note to add to the analysis - the way to "switch" to another universe through the improbability of an action you would never normally take, is also such a creative metaphor for reality. Loved this analysis! This movie has been stuck in my head for weeks, and it's amazing to see all the unique takeaways people had. Your breakdown of this new type of 'modern' nihilism born from the 'too much-ness' of it all is really well done.
    I think one of the underrated and best used tools in this movie is actually the pacing. The chaotic whiplash was entirely deliberate. The movie breaks you down by overwhelming you, much like Evelyn's own experience. Every moment that it appears Evelyn has a chance to breathe in part 1 is quickly interrupted, and she never has the chance to be in the moment- something else is always pulling her away. The movie weaponizes pace to give the audience the exact same sense of suffocation and anxiety. But by doing so we are brought to a higher emotional state of mania, so that these absurd gags and emotional moments hit us much harder. And it absolutely worked! Who would have thought that gags like rocks, buttplugs, and racacoonie would get through to us and make us cry? I'm just in awe of this piece of art; nothing has ever effected me to this extent. I love how you talked about weaponizing pace. The rock scene was the perfect palette cleanser at the right time right when our brains are about to explode, there is a peaceful setting of two rocks.
      But what I do love on subsequent viewings is that the dialogue syncs up so well. When Waymond was discussing how Evelyn feels she should be not be with him at all and he said "You don't have to say it....I see it." But what is messed up is literally a couple of moments later when Evelyn first jumps she tells Waymond that her life without him was beautiful. And it makes me feel that despite her life without Waymond....she wants Waymond to see it with her. Not in a way that she does not want him, but she wanted to see her at her best.

    • @ananythingbagel5197
      @ananythingbagel5197 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lw8099 Agreed, the rock scene right after the seizure-inducing montage was so well done.
      That take on Evelyn and Waymond is very interesting! Honestly on my watches it always seemed to be more vicious and petty at that point (before it's all reversed later), but I like that interpretation. And with how complex their relationship is, there's probably no wrong way to interpret it.

    • @lw8099
      @lw8099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ananythingbagel5197 And that is the amazing thing this film is open to interpretation. Even on multiple views (I've seen it 4 times, once in IMAX) I've interpretted some things differently and even cried at different times.
      I truly feel that when Evelyn tells Jobu to stop calling her that and saying she is her MOTHER that Jobu was snapped into the parking lot, where they had their final fight. I'm sure Joy was in the parking lot....but when she got into the car, it was completely Jobu....because that was when Evelyn was talking to all Joy and all Jobu. She even relates back the doubts that Jobu has during the rock scene to herself in the parking lot. As if somehow throwing the words back into her face. It was simply magic how they had that scene at night but also contrasted with how Evelyn first told Joy she was fat in the morning.

      I think that too muchness angle hit the nail on the head. It’s that feeling we all get when we haven’t started an essay due in twenty minutes, and we haven’t talked to anyone for a few weeks, and the sink is leaking, and there’s a potential for a world war now, and…. just all that shit is happening all at once inside our tiny little world. It’s an aspect of human experience which is difficult to formulate into words and therefore gains the power of appearing as if it’s only happening to you, but it isn’t, and it’s ok to feel that way.

    • @pleaseenteraname8211
      @pleaseenteraname8211 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ananythingbagel5197 I mean it makes sense at both angles but I interpreted that she was just being brutally honest without really thinking about what she said. Like when she calls her daughter fat at the beginning. She is just saying what she thinks without much forethought

    I completely agree with everything you said here. Most Hollywood movies rely on heavy CGI and egregious special effects to cover up a mediocre script with a hallow heart. But EEAAO proves that when you have high caliber acting talent and an amazing script, the audience is more willing to accept the obvious puppetry & animations because everything else is so emotionally moving.

    The scene with the dad where he talks about how being silly in the face of everything the world throws at him is his superpower made me cry. When I was younger I would've resonated with Joy's character more, but even though I'm still pretty young I have a daughter who just turned 5, so hearing him put to words this beautiful quality I have that I never recognized in myself as being a strength, was so profound. There's a million other beautiful moments in this movie, but that one was so poignant and relevant to me on a personal level, it always makes me feel better about myself when I'm struggling or feeling overwhelmed as a parent

    As a man whos has lived life with many regrets, many failures, many unavoidable catastrophes (as is every humans life), this movie is the perfect refutation of nihilism and giving into despair. The idea that every choice we make branches off into a world where that choice went a different way, leading to infinite possibilities for our lives, does seem at first to be cursed knowledge. If there were a few key moments that could've changed the course of your life forever, then the life you're "stuck in" would seem like the worst possible thing. But the next logical step to take when learning that nothing in life matters, is that the decisions YOU made, the life YOU lived is a completely unique one that no version of you could ever have. And thats what you have to fine joy and pleasure in knowing, that no matter happens, your life is the most important thing in your world, because there's no other one like it.

    • @nanashipersonne4151
      @nanashipersonne4151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don‘t think you understand that there can be a joyful reaction to nihilism. Just because there is no objective meaning in life. Does not mean you can not enjoy it. I thought the movie showed how you can accept this truth and still have a good life, that you do not have to only see despair, but also take it with humour and love.

Each new viewing I would pick up on something that would pull at my heart more and more. I cried with a smile on my face so much throughout the whole movie. To think, there was a scene with text for dialogue, and it moved me, because I could still feel the characters. And boy those characters, Michelle put on an incredible display of range, she changed her aura every dimension. Ke Huy Quan, his performance made me so upset we have been deprived of such a talent for so long, Hollywood standards. And then Stephanie, a Jobutopaki spin-off movie would be so ideal, can’t wait to see more of her. Plus Jamie and James, both being assholes, in the best way possible. The best thing a movie can have is relatability through it's message, and this movie had many perspectives from people of different age, gender, mindset, etc. to relate to. I feel like this movie helped answer questions and feelings for people that couldn't be expressed through words or even thoughts, maybe not directly, but maybe it gave someone their own interpretation and understanding of their problems or feelings through the script and movie structure that may be overwhelming due to lack of expression or different perspective. Well at least that's what it did for me. It feels so nice to finally watch a film that feels so human and full of passion and purpose that grounds you in reality under all of the overwhelming mess of overthinking and worrying about things and possibilities that will never affect you or don't matter as much as you think they do and overlooking what really matters that's right in front of you. (at least in this universe lmao)

    I loved this movie too and I have come to be a fan and lover of Michelle Yeoh late. But, just now as I watched this video -
    probably not for the first time - I found more reasons that I love it. The last one was the comment: "We hope you see yourselves in the characters." That got to me too. Surely, that was one of the reasons I loved the movie right from the beginning, I just didn't know it. Ms Yeoh is sensational at making me, the viewer, see her as a real, earthy, honest, hard-working and bewildered ordinary, decent person and I really believe she is a really beautiful, decent, honest down-to-earth person - as I am, or at least I try to be. And all of the actors did that for me - made me see them as real people like me, whom I disliked and liked and criticized and appreciated - because I could see something of me in each of them. And in the end I can appreciate being me and I love the team of actors who did that for me

    Solidly critical analysis! Just as "Everything Everywhere" trust us to keep up with the speed, you actually trust your audience to grasp your cinema/media terminology when you make deeper critiques which is the cathartic feeling we all look for in a proper film review, that contextualises specific themes of immigration/familial trauma/sci-fi etc with a wider picture in the real world. Great to see a critic who is "Western" pick up on the sentimentality of the Kung Fu/martial arts/ cinematic choices like Asian audiences do, so I had a wide stupid grin watching this throughout.

    I absolutely love your poetical description and explanation of the movie and its meaning. I confess to rewatching your review multiple times just because of your voice and the poetry of it all ... also your voice kinda makes me think of Huey Freeman from The Boondocks. So excellent 👌
    PS: I can't believe I had no idea about Wong Kar-Wai. I kept hearing "one car wide?!?!?"

    This movie made me cry so much! Everytime the mother traveled through parallel universes it was like my own life was flashing before my eyes. I've literally had the same problem with my parents and it hit so close to home. I was so happy and sad and high af.

    This movie is incredible and this is a great breakdown of some of the reasons why. In a just universe it would sweep the Oscars in every category.

    i saw this movie with my boyfriend last Sunday. We laughed, we cried, and we were perplexed by the absurdity and excited by the amazingly choreographed action scenes. It made me call my mom and tell her I loved her. I loved the Chinese-speaking parts (I would've been happy if the whole movie was in Chinese). The art direction is amazing. The cast is amazing, and the references are amazing. I'm so happy I saw it in the theater.

    this is my favorite short-form video on this movie. thank you
    I didn't come here to hear my opinion back at me, and I learned a lot more reasons why I enjoyed this film here. but you did say something that I tell everyone who asks me about the movie: it might reduce the value/be a disservice to concretely label anything about the movie and look at it that one way for the rest of a conversation. This is the most "3d" film narrative (that you can pick up and turn around to look at all sides in the moment) that I've seen without being completely abstract. It's a very vivid, overwhelming experience.
