    One of my professors in college (this particular class met once a week) would have us close our eyes and do some motivational talk and trying to get us to forget about everything that’s going on outside the class. One of the things, I remember, every week she would say something about noticing your feet on the ground and just being attached to the earth. And honestly, that shit helped me get into the rhythm of the class and just be grounded and mentally prepped.

      you shouldn't be relying on friends or family for your mental well-being, that'll only drag you both down to the ground. you'll slowly ruin all your relationships by constantly dumping negativity on everyone around you and hoping to get positivity out of other people. you need to learn how to be stable and functional on your own first, and getting therapy might help you get your footing for that.

And yes, I know that one should not use friends or family as an emotional dumpster, because from a young age my own parents have unloaded their emotional baggage on me, effectively fucking me up.
      However, a lot of people in my position CANNOT AFFORD THERAPY, and live in shitty countries where seeking help for mental problems is a huge stigma. I'm a minor, and am trapped in a abusive household and have no money. Lots of kids out there like me. Worst thing is that this is normal in my country. Services for child protection won't do shit. So I understand if someone turns to Motivational Speakers as a last desperate resort. It is easy to attract and manipulate emotionally vulnerable and lonely people.

      @@wrioculus that sounds much like victim blaming, also as the other comments said not everyone can afford a therapist, especially while being underage and in a non-supportive household. Or maybe they tried and had a bad experience (I got a shitty therapist [which my mom didnt even actually get for my mental health, she just wanted to get a paper saying that I needed a support dog or whatever so our dog could stay home] that costed hundreds and they literally just made me feel like shit and my mom got angry at me for "exaggerating" things. I know this was only 1 therapist and doesn't reflect on all the others, but lmao my mom ain't taking me to another one since she got the paper for the dog.
      Also, saying that you shouldn't rely on friends or family is only your personal belief. My friends have been what are keeping me floating and alive. I understand than friends are not professionals and they are not equipped to help with your emotional baggage, but that isn't what it is about. It's just about having someone who you know likes you despite you thinking that you're shit. They just listen to me, I listen to them and then we play games together and forget the bad things. Motivational speakers are a lot like fake psychics in that they say incredibly generic things but their audience is going to interpret those generic sayings to apply to their specific situation without even realizing it so they will attribute wisdom or knowledge to the psychic or speaker. It's a natural human instinct to relate to other humans and relate what other humans are saying to our situation. It's a basic part of human empathy. Unfortunately con artists know this and they use it to manipulate people. Which is why so many people believe in horoscopes and those psychics that claim to speak to your dead relatives and motivational speakers apparently.

They get so desperate to get the attention they're unable to get with their set of skills that it makes them jealous someone can actually have it (even when it's mere courtesy) - it's similar to how misogynists always focus on how "men are expected to open doors/carry things" whenever there's an argument about women's rights, as if it's relevant and the "extra niceties" they bring up are at all comparable to the issues discussed. Similarly, they will find any excuse to think to themselves that when someone else has what they want it is undeserved, and must be due to (for example) disability, since everyone is "too nice" - they can't face the fact that they're just not good enough. They almost wish they were in the same situation as they know they wouldn't get the "attention" otherwise, convincing themselves that even mere courtesy is some kind of special treatment (that they crave but can't have), therefore demonising it and staying ignorant to all the issues that come with disabilities. • @rosemali3022
      @rosemali3022 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Alice Kae Well for one thing, they arent "Alphas" at all. They try to project it in a "fake it till you make it" kind of way.
      But you will find many men who arent speakers also try to enforce that ideal of manhood in their own lives. I'm sure you noticed that the actual likely response of the audience is that they become less confident right? They are protecting a very narrow version of what masculinity is, and can be.
      I think fear is likely at the root of it. Fear of having lived their lives "wrong", or resentment that maybe this new generations will be able to follow their own true personalities when it hadn't felt like an option before, or fear of realizing that their actions throughout life weren't 100% their own, that propaganda played into it, society did, that they arent the only influence over their own lives that they thought they were. Etc etc. Plenty of reasons, even if they are still hurtful.

      My 5th grade math/science teacher was the same way. He’s the reason I had such a lack of confidence in math that it was affecting my grades. He would get up in front of everyone and throw out two three-digit numbers and ask us to multiply them (without use of a calculator or pencil and paper, might I add) and after a minute of silence he would clap his hands together and say “c’mon guys, this is simple stuff!”

    The worst fear of being in a wheelchair is people being “too nice” really got me as someone who is scared of being in a wheelchair because I know I’ll be harassed and questioned by strangers because I am not paralyzed. Wheelchairs would probably benefit me but how people will react scares me

    • @Mort-ko7lj
      @Mort-ko7lj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      I understand the fear you feel about this, but if something will provide you with aid and you can get it, please do. Potential judgement by strangers shouldn’t outweigh the actual benefit for you. I understand your fear, but too many people (including myself) are afraid of using tools to assist themselves and make their lives easier just because they think they don’t need it bad enough or they’re afraid of judgment.

      I'm very late but I feel the same way tbh. I've recently started using a cane and have got endless questions ("oh, did you hurt your leg?" "But you're so young!"). It's frustrating because I don't have a diagnosis or really any clue as to what the issue is. All I know is that I get extremely dizzy randomly and fall a *lot*, as well as just having a bad ankle that gives out sometimes. It helps me be a lot less likely to fall, but because of the lack of a proper diagnosis, it's hard to explain to people who ask (and a lot of people do). Going so far as getting a wheelchair sounds nice but by god do I fear having to deal with that.

    • @honeysickle
      @honeysickle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@luminationbutthisisforvide522 before I got officially diagnosed with persistent nerve issues, they labeled my chronic pain as "fibromyalgia". its basically the word for when doctors can't figure out what's wrong with you. it's a pretty broad term, and people might get off your back a bit if they hear an "actual" diagnosis. there's also this huge, persistent assumption that everyone in a wheelchair is "crippled" without it. that's not true. just like how you use a cane to help, I sometimes use a wheelchair on my bad days. but ableists just can't wrap their head around the fact that not every single disabled person always needs their support tools to function. being disabled is a spectrum; some people are more mobile than others, but that doesn't make ones pain lesser or greater.
      apologies for the long comment, but I didn't get a lot of support because my chronic pain origins were so vague. I don't want someone else to go through the same thing. your pain is valid. you're valid. don't let anyone convince you that your pain is "all in your head". just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. cheers

They give a lot of emphasis on "Jesus took everything on the cross" which is interpreted as every kind of illness by many, therefore, if you have faith that he died for you, then you will be cured. The problem is that this interpretation is spat out like a mantra like every other christian phrases you may often hear, and it's extremely ableist. Like, what about the people who are born visibly disabled? Did they not love God enough before being born, so that they could be born with a "perfect" body? And so on. But the perfectly able bodied people who frequent churches don't think about that. They don't have to. You wouldn't imagine how much judgmental comments I started getting there after getting disabled, because it's interpreted in many ways by christians, many of them being that I sinned to get like this and that all would get back to normal if I repent, implying that disabled people ain't normal lol
