I’ve had an M2C and now have a 981 Cayman S. Can totally relate to your comments. The Cayman is just a better car in every way; engine sound, handling, and way quicker on twisty roads. But I remember in the M2C I’d literally laugh out loud a lot at how crazy and fun it was to drive. Both great cars! Love your vids btw.

A mid engine car is always going to be different to anything front engined.
The closest comparison to the Cayman 4.0 GTS would be the Evora GT.

Not in every way....the M2C has room for 4 people and a trunk. There is no such Porsche (4 seater and trunk) to beat the M2C .....no Panamera, no Macan, no Cayenne !!

For me it’s the Cayman all day. To me the cayman is a true sports car vs the BMW. The BMW Is a passenger car that is done up sporty. Add the flat 6, the mid engine balance, and the lighter weight and it is just brilliant.

May be the wrong thing people want to hear, but when I switch from the GT3 to the e46 or e92, I might smile more driving it on the street. Being able to do small power slides in public (allegedly) when no one is around is just so much fun in an FR car.

Nice review. I love the focus on driving enjoyment, that is really what is all about. I went from a 2020 M2 Comp Manual bone stock to a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 Manual bone stock. For me around town the M2 is more fun on the curves and ramps, it has a playfulness to its handling the GTS 4.0 lacks. But I would still pick the 4.0 for overall enjoyment as the naturally aspirated flat six with a superior manual simply connects you to the driving experience in a way the S55 and rubbery manual (in comparison) can't. For someone who values playful handling over drivetrain though, the answer might be the M2 Comp. The value equation is also tricky as the GTS 4.0 has appreciated and will likely hold its value better than the M2, so it may actually cost less.

Love this video. As an M2C owner i'm biased, but it's nice to see someone put into words my feelings about the engine. It doesn't really sound very good, but it FEELS really "motorsporty." It feels like a pretty nice car that someone dropped a race engine into and the nosies it makes aren't necessarily good, but they are very exciting. The M2 Comp feels like the tuner car you always imagined having as a kid.

Believe it or not, I sold an M2 CS to get a Cayman GTS 4.0. Never regretted it at all! The CS was a great car but the Porsche was just superior in every way. The BMW was possibly the best M car ever and was fun to drive but it did not sound great and I didn’t love the manual gearbox. The Porsche was not perfect (gearing not great) but the manual gearbox was amazing, the engine always wanted to rev and the sound was intoxicating! Both awesome cars but the Porsche was a cut above!

Great video bro! 100% agreed to your comments. Before I bought my M2 CS (DCT), I was x-shopping between it and the Boxster Spyder or GT4. I finally picked the M2 CS due to its practicality and that "Fun" factor you also mentioned.
Also I find the DCT is way more "fun" than the pdk despite the pdk may be a tiny bit faster, but pdk just doesn't give me that raw and violent shift like the DCT. The pdk is too smooth like a CVT in my opinion.

I think a key point is the way the car you drove feels much improved with the mods done by the owner. I remember driving M2C stock at a BMW event, and it was objectively better than M2 base but it felt more like a parts bin car in terms of steering and suspension. Like it didn’t quite have that unified steering/suspension/chassis feel, which the M2 base (stock) did imo

Great cars and some good points made during the drives. One fact that has to be made if really comparing these two is resale. While being more expensive it has WAY better resale value and the potential to continue to just rise. Especially since the Cayman/Boxster chassis is going electric. While both are quick, etc. they are not in the same class when it comes to appreciation in value.

I own a base M2, and test driven 3 different Caymans (718 base & S and 981 S), and I preferred my base M2. It's just more playful. The Caymans were objectively better cars and could take a corner at far higher speeds. That said, they were SO perfect that all the fun had been sapped out of them. The M2 was a dance, you had to tame the wild animal and finding that balance was an enjoyable challenge.
That said, I test drove a 991.1 S Carrera, and those & 997.2 S are what I'm looking for. They have the perfect blend of higher capability of the Cayman, with the playfulness of the M2. You can feel the weight over the back axels, behaving like an unstable pendulum.

Fully agree with your conclusion. I'm not the biggest fan of the F87 M2C, but I found the 718 GTS 4.0 a bit too clinical, too sterile, and frankly too expensive for what it is. The M2 is more fun for ~55k. I'd go for a 981 GT4 with some miles on it over all of these, full stop (have owned a number of late model--EPS-era--Porsches and that one was definitely my favorite). Throwing a 981 GTS or lightly modded ~50-55k 981S into the mix would be interesting, too.

Fenton, you completely captured the essence of these two cars, and why I can’t take replace my M2C with a 718. The M2C has a sense of humor that the Cayman doesn’t (even with my M Performance coilovers, which are made by KW). The 718 is clinical, surgical, pristine. The answer for me is 718 and M2C in the same garage. Selling my Evora 400 today with the intent of grabbing a GTS or GT4. In the meantime, I grabbed a GR86 because I miss my Miata. Slow car fast is the ultimate joy, but the M2C is surprisingly playful and safe at reasonable speeds. Love my M2C on track, but the 718 is a different animal altogether!

To me, comparing the M2C to a GT4 or CGTS 4.0 is kind of silly. They are completely different cars at completely different price points. They are ALL great cars; just different.
To me the M2C is a better all-around, more usable car and the Porsches are more of an event. If nothing else, the seating position alone makes them very different driving experiences. All of those cars have more power than most of us can ever use safely on the streets.

I've owned 4 BMW's and 4 Porsches (inc. my current 718 Spyder). They are my two favorite car brands, and each has their own personality. The only thing I would add is that you really need to take resale value into account if you're going to talk value as part of the equation. The $15k in mods hold basically no value when you sell the car, and BMW's depreciate faster than Porsches, especially something like the GTS 4.0. That $25k to $30k price gap is going to largely disappear when you sell the cars. On the flip side, modding is fun and brings you closer to a car. Thanks for the video of two excellent cars.

While my 911 was slower and less powerful, it was an absolute joy to drive. Conversely, it was terrible for moving my daughter in a car seat to and from school. My M3 is FAR better at being a normal car that I can exercise on backroads from time to time. It won’t ever be as nimble as my old 911, but it’s a superior single car option.

Not Zygrene, but i have an M2 Comp with a stick. It's better than a shifter from an economy car and worse than the shifter in a sports car. Slightly rubbery/isolated, but not nearly as much as in most FWD cars. Kind of like a WRX shifter with a bit more feel. But not "direct" and "connected" like most porsche shifters, most modern american perfromance cars and high performance hondas. Maybe 6/10 in the grand scheme of things. Lots of short shift kits though and they'll significantly increase feel if that's what your'e after. Also worth mentioning that there's a clutch delay valve, which can make for a slightly odd feel in the clutch/weird timing. It can be removed pretty easily though.

    • @ronin84
      @ronin84 ปีที่แล้ว

I went from an NC Miata, manual, to test driving both a manual and dual clutch M2C and ended up buying the DCT. If you're used to shifters like a MIata or a Civic Type R, BMW always feels subpar and vague. Loved the DCT for a couple years but ultimately regretted my decision and sold the car. At the end of the day, the DCT while superior, made the car kinda boring.

    • @kidon3000

Does the short shift kit make a lot better? I've have driven E92 M3 manual and the shifter was awful, but the tranny did not have any upgrades.

  • @volodymyrshoniia2424

There is no difference between og m2 and comp in terms of suspension, the steering feel is only different due to software (you can easily update steering/lsd/dtc softwafe to m2cs level, dct programming as well if it's not a manual), your better impressions there are mostly due to modifications. There is some additional front end strut reinforcement with the carbon bar and extra bracing in the comp (can be retrofitted to og, but youre likely better off just doing a strut tower brace and maybe stronger corner braces for a fraction of the price and work), some reviews said there is some difference in bushings/subframe mounting.
Stock shocks on the m2 are awful (economy car level), happily replaced with ohlins r&t with softer swift springs and a revalve aka 3dm roadsport.
Can't wait to get my auto solutions ssk, still gotta install e90 slave to get rid of the annoying cdv.
Fbo n55 with a custom tune is pretty decent (stock was running out of steam a bit early at my elevation and didnt sound as exciting), maybe pure stage 2 turbo is viable.
Stock pads are terrible (lots of dust, non linear response, don't hold up to heat, too much initial bite), but at least og m2 calipers allow fitting 18" wheels unlike the bigger comp calipers.
Didn't really see much of a point in paying $10-15k more for comp over an lci and having an around 200 pound weight penalty as well as not being able to fit 18" wheels without switching the brake calipers to something smaller, twin turbo power delivery could be more exciting in certain scenarios, but i don't think it's worth the extra money compared to how an og m2 can be improved with that extra money. S55 also suits dct better while n55 is better matched with a manual from what i've heard.
Maybe get a better rear diff mount with bushings to eliminage wheel hop which seems to have gotten better after suspension and lsd upgrades.

Unusually late on a Zygrene comment. I don't own either and no fanboi, but too many people rush to the Porsche dealership and put down an allocation for P cars without driving them. The status, high resale is a sweet spot for them.
Modern P cars are precision balanced lethal speed weapons, great for putting quick times anywhere and shocking the driver about the performance envelope vs actually experiencing motoring joy managing weight transfer, lean, some rowdiness, maximizing the power etc. Few actually accumulate a lot of miles for this lack of fun reason.
Drive a Boxster and Miata side by side to know what I mean, and I'd take an 86 over the Cayman anyday if it was my dollars.

Miatas are cool, but they are literally half as much car as the Cayman. I can’t even fit in one.
Wouldn’t want to get hit in one. And large vehicles can barely see you,
The 86 is nice too, but closer to a Miata than the Cayman. A great value, though. I could at least fit in one, and also have some metal around me, if someone hit me.

It's understood, you're splitting some pretty subjective hairs here and to your credit you don't hiding that. Performance is important to me, but I agree, there are times when the appeal of a car is the overall experience of driving it. IMO a truly great performance car gives you a tactile relationship with the road/track. I've driven some ridiculously fast cars where it often feels like you're either an afterthought or a passenger. The higher the numbers get, it's a harder balance to strike.

So I had a 17 n55 manual m2 and now own a 2022 718 gts 4.0 pdk. The m2 is more fun, I describe it as a puppy on the beach just romping around saying cmon let’s play let’s play! (btw please stop calling the n55 ‘the base’ they were never available at the same time.) The gts is a much more serious car. Finding the edges of its capabilities is scarier and more nuanced. You need time in it to learn how to extract more, for example I can tell you are not being as aggressive with the throttle and you are not trusting the suspension as much as you could. Also your downshifts were pretty sloppy, keep the revs up as you go through the corners. I mean, do what you feel is safe, but there is SO MUCH more to be found in that gts. For me, zero regrets after I found out more about its capabilities. Took me a few months though. Great video and I respect your opinion.

    • @parkman8595
      @parkman8595 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think if your reference is your local track, driving skill is the limiting factor here. If you're looking at Pro laptimes, even the 2.5 GTS is faster than an M2 Comp. These are laptimes around VIR at Car & Driver Lightning Lap
      M2C 2:59.7
      718 2.5 GTS 2:56.7
      718 GT4 2:50.3
Heck, Randy Pobst ran 2.5 seconds faster around Streets of Willow in the older 981 Spyder(1:21.74) than the M2 Competition(1:24.30).
Perhaps why you see M2, M3, M4s faster around your local track is an FR layout is easier to drive, especially for less experienced drivers. In order to get the speed out of MR and RR layouts, you not only need to understand concepts like weight transfer, trailbraking, etc but you have to master them as well. Even more so true for a 911.

Yet another pointless modded vs stock comparison, (no I don't care about the relative price points of the modded BMW vs stock Porsche - only a infinitesimally small percentage of owners ever mod their cars - that's a statistical fact no matter how full of such modded vehicles car forums or youtube are). You need to change the title of this video to say MODIFIED BMW M2 Competition vs ..... Otherwise it's a totally misleading title to what's actually being compared. When you have a title that implies stock vs stock, then test stock vs stock.
