@@thunderboltcalgary1559 As a Porsche fan I don't hesitate to admit the 718 cayman has lost it's edge. If Porsche stopped holding it back to make the 911 look better maybe things would be different, but as it is that 4 cylinder turbo is a tragedy.

I'd still take the Alpine. It's such a unique car and you want it to feel special. Also the fun and pure factor of the car is very appealing in the sea of electronic gadgetry etc.
I think the outcome here is, you're already a winner if you're looking to buy either of these cars.

I do love the early 90's Japanese sports car homage looks (I bet that's not what they were aiming for but it's where they ended up) and it seems like the purest of this lot - it would definitely make a great second car for weekends and track days.
I had the same decision between the Cayman T or M2c... in the end i chose the M2c for many reasons. The angry and aggression of the m2 made it so much more enjoyable over the cayman. I felt special in the cayman, but it just lacked that aggression.
The BMW M2 sounds almost like an E46 M3 and that was an epic sounding car

Yes! Yes it was! Only true enthusiast can appreciate the way an e46 M3 sounds.
I'm a fan of the s55, for a turbocharged car it still has that raspy tinny sound (like you said)

I’ve had both and there’s no comparison, the E46 had a kind of tinny sound as it went through the power band, intoxicating. The M2 is a deep growl though the pops and bangs are kind of fun. I would love the M2 to sound like the E46, May an Akrapovic exhaust when it’s out of warranty.
In other words "we didn't like the Alpine, the Cayman is your wife's car, the M2 is the best but we've been sponsored by Toyota, so..."

Things are often not as obvious and black&white as some of us wish in order to avoid complex analysis, thinking and judgement which might feel painful if the ability or willingness to do so is limited.....

I wish there were timed laps, but regardless I'd choose the Alpine. I like its light weight and fun factor over power and pure perfomance approach and the retro desing. Also, unlike the 718, the 4-cylinder fits with its character in my opinion
Agree, just wish they made a nice manual box! 😪 They went to so much trouble and expense to make a great involving sports car and then stick a dct in it 🤦🏻♂️ deal breaker for me
And the best braking feel ever, a point many dont talk about, but its an incredibly important part of driving experience.
If you ever get the chance to drive one, take notice of that.

Lucian I have unfortunately never driven one but my last car was a gt86 and the manual box just helped make it so involving! Surely I wouldn’t have loved it as much as I did with a dct... I’m sure the Alpine is a really great car as it is, just think it could’ve been even better with a nice manual. It doesn’t even have the 991 gt3 argument of being so fast that you’re glad you get to keep both hands on the wheel all the time... I’m really happy they went ahead and built the Alpine but these things are made (ok a little bit for the image factor but mostly) to make money! And I’d like to give them some of mine for having the guts to do it and do it properly but the lack of a stick and a 3rd pedal really breaks it for me... Porsche went back on it when the gt3 came out as pdk only, I hope Alpine have the courage to do the same!
@@nunobandeira1811 I had the GT86 followed by an Elise S2 but the Alpine is an absolute joy. I totally agree with your thoughts on manual driving, but, for me - and for every other tester on YT, they don't miss a manual at all. I urge you to have a test drive.

I can only have one car in my garage, so I went with the M2 (albeit in OG N55 guise) thanks to the backseats and usable boot space.
The last 5 minutes of this video made me want to self-harm. Painful it was I tell thee.

Nice review! Looks like there’s massive glare on the infotainment screen (the tablet mounted on the dash) on all of the cars. Seems like a horrible design flaw to not have a cowl around it (like there is for the tach and speedometer). Your thoughts?

Nuno Bandeira Alpine avoided the manual root due to a DCT being lighter! Shame, I agree, but you actually don't really feel that the car needs it!
@Viet Phan Well in reality is true and the Alpine point is the low weight so... We can expect a manual soon... or a catherham ;)
Viet Phan Well, it is the reason, whether you believe me or not... Alpine focused on light weight over power for the A110 project and thus to save weight with the ability to have a central tunnel for lightweight components (an E-Handbrake for example) they opted for a DCT.
You can also get a manual on the M2
So, is the 718 the handling "benchmark" or is it the A110?

4C is no longer produced.
I think that a lot of reviewers discount the 4c and the exige/elise just because they are so much less liveable than the big ones. They're so driver focused that you can't really daily them so the reviewers say "bah no one buys them, lets not bother"

Squadrone Rosso 4c spider is still produced - the coupe has been killed. Agree on adding a lotus. Would also be good to see a corvette or similar in the mix for good measure.
Exige Roadster should be in this mix, Evora’s a different price point now, but still worth looking at in this collection

I got a 718 base Cayman MT but it does have a sports exhaust. Never had an older 6 cylinder one. Could never afford/justify the new 6 GT4 price so somewhat limited in choice. Looked at the M2, but wanted 2 seats only. Funnily enough though took my buddy for a test drive last week and he commented on how surprised he was that the engine/exhaust sounded so good. Im not sure these tests with the mic only picking up the inside noise is a true indication of the sound. I do like driving with the windows down though so I can hear more of the exhaust. Out of those 4, I'd still buy the Cayman. It's just a joy to drive, and the chassis, gearbox make it just a great place to be in all the time. I daily drive it through the summer.
i think you forgot to mention looks. It does look the best of the group. i though went for a c43 amg coupe . enjoy the porsche.

Andy Bettencourt No lap time because the M2 comp didn’t make it on top. I finally know the reason of the missing lap time, the last couple days, people from the US & Canada brought their Supra to the track, and the 2020 GR Supra beat the M2 comp in a back to back dog flight, as well as cayman s 981 and 991 C4S lap time.

Probably aesthetics, suspension, and a whopping 5hp increase allowing the Supra to run a slightly faster lap time. Toyota is too cheap and conservative. At the end of the day it's still a Toyota tuned Z4.

lmao its not destroyed, i had a 981 before i got my 718 and im actually very happy that i can easily pick up speed at any rpm on the highway. the older car struggled unless i downshifted a few gears on the highway.

That's why I have a M2 Competition in my garage, 6 speed manual of course. Just did my break in service last week, can comfirm, the thing is a pocket rocket.

Yeah it has the best engine of the 4. When buying a sports car, you also have to look at upgradeability, the m2 will get you over 500hp with just a tune

Here's a crazy suggestion. During a British summer (or any season) if you bring cars to a track to do a track test and the weather is being cooperative - now hear me out - YOU DO THE FUCKING LAP TIMES BEFORE IT STARTS PISSING RAIN.

Do a 3 of 5 lap race with the most powerful car starting from the back like the folks at Best Motoring. That would enable viewers to make an informed decision.

Great comparison video, and applause for not copping out at the end and saying they are all good for something (ie. not making a pick).
What I suggest should be done, is bring value into the conversation. That way you can expand on the aforementioned conclusion of “they all do something well”, but the most value for your sports car dollar with the criteria of x, is y.
Not sure what UK pricing is, but here in North America, there’s a large price difference between a Supra and Cayman/M2.
How about the cayman s 981 against those?

I'd choose the Supra. I like the Alpine's agility, but Nordschleife lap times show that the Supra is 4 seconds faster than the A110.

Great review guys! I’d take the Alpine:) More of a sentimental decision. Just seems to me that is has the most character.
Car makers making cars like the Alpine needing us buyers to buy them to keep them building them: I absolutely love the thing and would love to have one BUT at more than 50K a car maker would have to give me much more than a tiny 1.8T 4 pot, an extra pedal and a much better build e.g. as it stands it is massively overpriced in my opinion a problem that has affected Lotus for donkey years. Sales will tell but as with Lotus it will probably remain an exotic rarity which will be the main reward for those who have and who will sink their dosh into this lightweight dough
Cool video, but nothing that wasn't already on the internet. Really, the lap times were all I was interested in. Maybe start with the lap times next time? You can still hoon around in them in the wet and talk about the cars and stats.

I love Porsche but I would probably take the M2 comp out of this lot. More fun, practical etc. But real world I would pony up and look for a used GT4 or even a GTS with the flat 6 for around the same $.

Manuels in the works for now and has been rumored to be released in a few months after it's release or next year.
Would easily take the manual M2 Comp or 718 Cayman with stick shift.. Also does this guy know the people that made the chassis of the 86 was Subaru, not BMW. I think he was saying Toyota built the chasis of both which is incorrect.

Guys, could you do a Z4M40i vs M2Competition? I know it’s an unusual comparison, but when you think about it, they are in approximately same price range and appeal to same target market.

I think it'd be so useful with so many of these reviews if we could also use a second hand example as a wild card option. Something that previously was perhaps levels above this type of field but over time is more equivalent. So for example, when reviewing a new Cayman, why not throw in a cheaper end Ferrari 360, a mid-priced 997 / 991 or the last edition R8 or M3 etc etc. Because that's what the average consumer is trying to weigh up, and those types of choices are out there. 👍
Given the Supra is putting out some 400hp, that's actually quite a sleeper bargain.
The M2 is by far the best looking and probably the most useful as a daily driver. Love the Porsche's handling but I can't get into the look of it. Supra's Ok and the Alpine is too much of a weekend toy -very cool- but not for me.

thorandmoljnir Manual M2 is my daily driver for almost 3 years....I absolutely love it. When my Girlfriend wanted to buy a new sportscar...she ordered the A110...which is indeed the perfect addition besides the M2 😉

Not to be biased, but what would the daily annoyance of the M2 be?. I recognize that this is not an easy choice or verdict - but perhaps follow up with a race driver in the seat for some hot laps. and on the other side bring on some luggage that would fit for a long weekend tour. It is kind of weird to judge these cars and include daily driving as a parameter when only being on the track - Then it should be about which one makes most fun/satisfaction on the track that determines the verdict. At least I´d like to see a follow up to this episode, whatever the theme would be. Daily Driving/living with, hot laps, acceleration. I´m sorry but this comparison review was a bit muddy waters overall.
I agree. Surely by every metric the M2 is easier to live with over the Supra. More room inside, rear seats, a larger more usable boot...

for so many years people have been pro cayman, now there is a new kid on the block.
I agree with the non verdict verdict and with the Porsche verdict xD. 5 years ago the Porsche had the great sounding n.a boxter engine soooo.....
The cayman with proper sound would be the one that both of you would take as a sports car ! All day long :)

The best is in fact the z3 m coupe! Naturally A 6 cylinder, manual, rear w d, best looking, and going up in value. This is the one I would have next to my mondeo
