More "walking the cup" TIG Welding Tips

While its mostly useful for pipe welding, it can also be a good technique for long runs on fillet welds.
In this video, I talk about cup size, electrode stickout, and how to hold the torch.
I set the lincoln TIG 200 to 177 amps and pretty went full pedal for most of the welding and I used 1/8" er309L filler metal just due to the fact that I had plenty of it. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

Really enjoy your vids, Jody. I'm retired, past 70, have a full machine shop, and just bought a nice TIG machine a few months ago. Still experimenting, with better and better results. I ordered a pair of TIG fingers a few days ago. Thanks for thehelp, man.

I always enjoy your videos. You explain it well and your welding is great. I just need to work on making it second nature for me. Thanks for taking the time to put these out there. Also I will say that I bought your TIG Finger XL and it works great! When I am making some parts I am welding on 2 ends of a 7" tube and without the TIG Finger it was impossible to prop on the part due to the heat. Now its not an issue at all and I get much more repeatable welds on both ends of the tube because of it. Thanks again!

This is the only form of welding that I don't have under my belt just yet but I plan on practicing daily, as soon as I can afford the whole setup and a small workshop built to practice in.

Very nice welds, looks so easy. I need more time at the bench training and have some fun. Every time I need to TIG the conditions are horrible. Unknown metals, awkward position or not enough time. ☹️

Excellent, I have been watching your videos for a long time now. I love them you do a very nice job of of filming. Not to mention you are an excellent welder lol. I always say I have to get one of those Tig fingers, but I never do. I think it's time, I started a new Job a couple months ago and all they do is stainless tig as far as welding goes. Can I get one in Canada?

Thanks for answering; I said it's always good to see a welding craftsman. Many can weld, but few know how to handle their hands as a good cartoonist would do with their drawings.

Still trying to master the action seems I am pushing to hard and the cup releases its stick to the part and I get a jump in my bead I just need to do more practicing. I use the #8 gas lens fo almost all I do. Like your videos very much keep it going.
Bruce Kennedy practice with a dry rig with a big cup. Turn and roll in the direction you are travelling. It doesn't require much force. Too much and you will slip.
I also think my angle is to close to 90 degrees need to learn the sweet angle for just the right movement forward.
Bruce Kennedy stick your tungsten out almost as far as your cup is wide. If you use an 8 cup stick your tungsten out close to a half inch.
I know I'm on the wrong video (wrong process) I'm learning welding on my own by watching your videos and a little trial and error. I've watched a ton of videos from you and some other guys on here. I've passed my 1g test the first time I took it. I need to now pass my 2g and 3g test. With each test I pass I get a little more money. Could you do a video on vertical groove test with backing focusing on rod movement? I would like to see the different rod manipulation techniques and the results of each one. I can't run a good stringer. All the videos I've already watched on it are extremely helpful however I can't really notice any sort of rod movement.
Can anyone link me to a previous video on this great channel where Jody built an arm rest / support stand for TIG welding? I've looked for 20+ mins. Searching by several different key words and going back in chronological order. Can't find it. Thanks for any help.

Hey Jody! For that second piece you had with the smaller lap weld, what material is that? Should I expect oxide coloration from all normal steel, not just stainless?

What size tungsten are you using? In what instance would you use a thicker tungsten?

Wiggling the cup: 2 contact points on the cup
Walking the cup: 1 contact point on the cup
All right, that seems reasonable, and is a real difference. Did you just make that up or is it in general use? In my case at the moment, I'm trying to make fillet welds, and want to do this just to steady the whole business, and enable a tighter arc than I can hold with my shaky hands. SO, the cup will be in contact with two surfaces all the time, not rolling back and forth like a drum as he said. OK, "Wiggling" it is! I just tried it today for the first time with one of those nice glass cup setups, and of course it's just held on there by an o-ring and is not steady enough to do this... serious beginner mistake and no harm done, but it seemed well to watch some more videos at this point.

I have an issue with my cup moving smoothly across the metal. It seems the cup really scrapes against the metal to the point where its difficult to smoothly walk the cup. Any tips?

What angle is cup when walking. I know with aluminium you should not walk cup but torch should be always close to 90 degrees as you free hand. ??

Could you do a more in depth video to either the ahp160st or the Everlast140st machines and their tig capabilities(if you have them). It's all my current budget will allow and I'd be a beginner with tig so they're presumably be a good place to start

The Everlast 140 is a good machine- plan on getting better cables/torch etc in the future to make it more useable- otherwise, it's a good machine to start with.
But how capable is it? This is the kind of thing where a video is helpful, to actually show what all you can do with it and to what extremes. And since the ahp is in the similar price bracket, which is the better of the too?
And what's the deal with the accessories that you'll be replacing them?
Machines like this need to have a shoot out so people can actually decide which is right for them, as I farm and the stick welding side of things will be used quite actively as well

Hi Jodie. I am trying to get the hang of the walking the cup technique. It looks kind of like weaving to me. But i keep getting undercut at the top and of my welds. I reduced my current but then i cant seem to get a good puddle forming. But wen i get the right current to make the puddle form and flow nice. Undercut happens. I am doing practice pieces. Can someone help plz. Thanks
What position are you welding in? Meaning, is it laying flat like in his videos? But just generally speaking, you might not be pausing enough at the 'top' edge. That said, pausing too long is also a problem, but remember - the puddle follows the heat. If you're getting undercut at the top edge of your weld, try moving your filler rod up higher, near the top edge. That puts the new material in closer to the point you're seeing undercut, and again - pausing to let the puddle flow out around the heat is how you get it smooth. If the filler is added near the undercut portion, it'll smooth out more and undercut less.
Also, you don't need to just lay the filler in and 'walk' over it - I often will walk the cup, but dip rod in along top edges to avoid undercut. Dipping while walking works very well.

Is to use a 1/8ths (3.2 mil) tungsten and #8 cap a good idea for every welding job?
not every job....but a lot. each job has its different details that might dictate a different size cup...but a 3/32"" (2.4mm) electrode can be used on DC up to 200 amps and down as low as 5-10 amps
