A popular tig welding technique for stainless steel is walking the cup.
But there are times when walking the cup is not practical because of limited access or when there are other pipes in the way.
And in certain situations, walking the cup can leave scratches on a machined surface that might not be permitted either by a drawing requirements or customer preference.
Thats when a Tig Finger® comes in handy.
It's like having a prop in your pocket that lets you prop right next to a hot weld without smoking your fingers.

I'm not even a welder but this is one of the coolest videos I've ever seen. And if I didn't do what I do now (restoration) I'd definitely be a welder. From a marketing perspective, I also gotta give the guy credit. He positions his "commericals" in such a way they don't even seem like commercials. Nice work man.

it's never too late to start. learn it as a hobby and you can probably incorporate it into your restoration services.
I know it's been 4 years buy you should start in a garage or something with a starter welder. I be you not to get an Everlast, as they are imports. Since they are imports, it is hard to find parts for it. I am getting an esab. They re cheaper than big brands like Miller, and there are parts for them all over the internet

Just thought id drop a line..just finished 1st year welding in Alberta, Canada. On the road to Journeyman welder. All the students love your videos that you have produced. My wife wanted to know what i wanted for christmas and I said a Tig finger, I have a great wife, she got me two of them. I didn't need anything else but the tig finger I told her. She wanted to know why the Tig finger was so important to me so I turned the electric stove on high then slide the Tig finger on laid it on top of the glass for five min pulled it off, slide my fingers out and had her slide her fingers in. she said know i now why you wanted this tool…Like the penguins of Madagascar said "nice and cool baby nice and cool!!!!"
I went thru Welding school in 1983 and remember the TIG process fondly. We called it "walking the dog" back then. I loved it when it left a pattern of the belly of a snake. I noticed the adjustable tig rig and instantly thought why didn't we have that back then. I don't know if it's a recent invention, but it would absolutely pay to have one of these. I’ve been welding for over thirty years and I gotta say that tig finger is genius. I always took a larger gloves thumb and wrapped it around a glove that fits on the pinky, scorch the wrap so it becomes dry and slides on the material easier. Good work sir, I wish I had internet when I started in high school, I had to learn the hard way on my own.

Dam right, after I retired all the nice stuff came out. I am still welding at home on rail Buggy's and Roll Bars on 1 1/2" Chrome Molly I still have a small standard torch.
I recently moved up to tube welding out in the power plants and the TIG finger is a life saver. I dont have to search for a crappy strap or air hose to cut up anymore. Your products and videos are great.

not coded, learned by keeping my mouth shut and paying attention. Built a chicken coop and weldedthe galvanized pipe to chicken wire with a 40 year old buggy rig . Even chickens impressed

I use a TIG Finger and will not TIG pipe without it. Jody is a BEAST of a welder! He got me better on TIg just by showing CLEAR videos. Not a bunch of fireworks. Thanks man!

I'm 17 and started welding in my grade 9 started welding mild steel like most people, but now I am welding stainless steel and aluminum like a pro, tryout videos were like a second teacher to me :)

I bought a couple of TIG Fingers and just love them. They just lie on the welding table and when you need them, just slip it on. Sometimes I use two at a time. I like using them even when heat is not the issue as they slide along the metal really nice.
Been TIG welding for 30 years. not sure why I watched your vid but I liked it. You really don't need to show how good the Tig finger is I can see how good it will work and how versatile it can be. I just ordered a 2 pack & I know I will like it. Thanks
your welding is like jewelry bro, thats what i call a "Finnish" weld , i bet your penmanship is like the declaration of independence ,all fancy and artfull, some people lack your welding calligraphy skills, i bet 90% of the population cannot be trained to weld like that.

There's something about watching an expert welder that calms my senses.
Not gunna lie, welding seems like it can be pretty Zen.

im not a welder but I have taken some classes. you definitely have to throttle back and make sure everything you do is thought out and precise. all of you movements must be fluid and smooth. its a lot harder than it looks, to me at least. much cred to guys that are masters of their crafts!!
effumall especially make sure the I, U settings are correct, technique is proper considering what material you weld.. quite a lot of knowledge in preparation work before you even start welding..

This guy is merely an adequate welder. I can tell by his instructions and terminology. I work along side welders who've forgotten as much as this guy knows. He's a backyard welder, self taught which is admirable enough, but not truly an elite craftsman.

How do you know how deep your penetration is or does that just come with experience? Just starting out I want to know Im getting enough strength if that makes sense
Makes sense. So if I want to build a trailer frame stick welding would be the preferred method? What would you recommend for a welding machine that could do both or all 3 or is there issues trying to get it all in one package? Thanks again
+Jeff DeLuca you can get machines that do all 3 but they're not great. stick is the way to go with a trailer but you need to know what you're doing as its mostly done in position. 2.5mm gp rod @ about 70-80 amps should do the trick.

My dad got me a tig finger, I was like "pfff, what the heck is this thing?!" Then I watched a couple of your vids and gave it a try. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! SO much easier, and better welds too!

ive used the stuff to keep my starters from melting.... i study computer science in college, i turn wrenches because im too poor to have it done.... being poor makes you learn lol

I recently got a lincoln Viking and it is super nice.
I also have a miller digital elite, a huntsman auto dark, jackson nexgen, a speedglas, and several others.
right now I am using the Lincoln Viking more than others.
What temperature we need to use in the machine...?

how are you getting such color in the welds we spent hours on one chunk of stainless and all we got was kinda copper color. what amps, gas, gas pressure, filler metal, tungsten, and stainless grade please get back to me
I'm doing metal work at school (vwo), my teacher does know how to get it. I can ask it for you brcause i saw him doing it a lot of times with that color what you mean;)
Try using 130/140 amps? Maybe that works
well we were using 1/4 inch 440 stain less from 60-220 amps and 8cfm-35cfm after super heating it we tried dipping it in oil and nothing. were are trying to get the color of the videos thumb nail all the blues. we got it once about an 1/8 inch of it no idea how and we tried replicating it and nothing.
It can be the temprature and air condition of your work station. This looks like overheated metal, so you can try it in a cold room;) my teacher get those colors, only i don't know how
please ask him because we were getting colors but just coppery type color but thats it. and temp was around low 70s high 60s when it was done. we werent using any filler metal either just root passes
My welding instructor had a heat shield, but it wasn't very flexible. Your videos are amazing and i'm learning alot. I also bought 2 pairs of your tig fingers. One for me, and one for my journeyman.

I really hope you make a living off these! Very in detail and informational videos, they should show these in welding schools, they are even fun to watch. You are a very intelligent man, good luck and keep up the great welding!
I can attest this is a good video for beginners to learn about walking the cup. I am a Union Pipefitter/welder, worked in a fab shop welding and fitting nothing but thin wall stainless(some heavy wall, some carbon, chrome, etc), a lot of 100% x ray welds....this is an informative one to get you started. As any pipe welder will tell you though, you'll end up taking this from that person, that from this person, and put it all together to make your own style.

@weldingtipsandtricks Just to be clear psi is pressure. Not to be confused with flow rate in cfh. With the 7/16 # 7 cup I used 15-20 cfh flow
I'm currently doing my A ticket in B.C. and I'm learning about stainless. What we've learned is that when your stainless weld turns blue like that you are burning it too hot and the stainless has lost its stainless capabilities and is now regular carbon steel. I wasn't sure if you we're aware of that. But besides that, that is a really nice looking weld. Walking the cup is really nice on pipe but for me I prefer my stringer beads.
I have been stealing....er I mean borrowing welding tricks for several years from youtube and this is the most professional instructor I have encountered. I do alot of low tollerance , precison parts for nuclear safety and military communications and this channel has saved me a shite load of time and aggravation. TY for what you do...btw , omw to order a tig finger (hot pinky nails suck)!!!

Love the video,for people who r trying to learn to weld u have the knack to keep peoples attention on the task at hand. I stumbled across this video and Walking The Cup caught my attention in the title. In the military i did metalworker/welder for my MOS training back in 1983. In 1985 i went to Tulsa Welding School, we had excellent instructors who were actually pipeline welders earlier in their career and thats where i heard the term Walking The Dog same as your walking the cup. It amazes me i havent heard that term since and i still weld and taught welding school for our local union hall and when i mention that term i get the deer in the headlight look. This is an awsome technique i still use today. Keep up the good work, im sure u have helped alot of begginners and experienced welders w your videos and from the comments u have inspired a few to take on welding as a new hobby or career. Peace

I miss welding heavier parts. After 26 yrs of welding I've migrated to aerospace welding. Some of our stuff is .020 aluminum and can get stressful. We have a nadcap audit thursday, such a over regulated agency. Nice welds.

thanks, i kinda figured thats what the difference was. i've heard of zirconiated tungusten and that does the same thing. and about using pure tungsten, where i work thats what we use for all aluminum tig welding, and it balls up really easilly during normal welding.
Welding stainless has always been easy and fun even when stick welding. No rust, and also makes a clean connection thru the ground and lead wire.
