TIG Welding Technique - Walking the Cup

A very good TIG welding technique for pipe and a few other round shapes is walking the cup. But its good to be also be able to freehand.
Sometimes there are obstacles that prevent walking the cup. For those occasions being able to prop with a tig finger can help.
Other times, a part has smooth machined surfaces and job specs will not allow the scratches from the ceramic cup.
Walking the cup is primarily a technique used for pipe welding but I have found a few other uses for it like a run of 50 round parts I welded in my shop a while back.

I am a union pipe welder. Weld all day , every day.....the tig finger is worth it's weight in gold. especially when the guys are doing hot welds on small bore.... They always want to use it. We put em' down on the tool list. let's see if they come in.

The reason he says that is because tig welding breaks you're ego.
You have to realize you suck.
Even a pretty good beginner looks awesome to a stick welder.
But the better you get the more you can pick out that's flawed. Because it's such a perfect (theoretically) process

Most are like time-lapse on the torche so I could never judge how fast they were moving and adding filler until now! Thank you so much for a superior instructional video and videos! I have a stick and a mig but was wanting to get into tig and yours was the topper offer number 1! Thanks for all your hard work! Those arc shots are still getting better. If only I could see as good when I weld as I do when I watch you weld. The welding equipment manufacturers need you for some consultation for their videos. I have not seen a welding video from anyone else that is even in the same league as yours. Since I only TIG occasionally, it's always a great refresher to watch your videos and see how it's supposed to be done. Thank you.
I have a couple of TIG fingers that I use for all of my welding and I put my buddy onto them too.

The tig finger is literally the best invention out there for tig welding I even use it for flat welds and just slide my finger on the table just because it slides so smooth instead of getting hung up if you were to drag your glove. Smooth = consistency.👊🏻 thanks Jody for your awesome invention 🙏🍻

I know my old tig welding instuctor orders them in bulk lol. I know at work every day i got to make the choice of weaving freehand ,dabbing or walking the cup... Your videos helped me when i was in welding school and still help me now. Your tig finger just helped me pass a 3G open root tig test! Thank you so much for your videos and products. This is like watching dancing, to a particular rhythm. Very elegant when one treats metals in this manner , that is with great respect. I always thought that the duty of education is to take away and remove all the clumsiness mental and physical clumsiness with which we are born. Not many people eradicate their physical clumsiness, but a good welder certainly does and suing my experience I can say, sometimes even better than a surgeon! May sound surprising to some, but it is true and I shall not go into details. Congratulations for this video.

Very nice video. Beautiful shots. Beautiful welds. Years ago I welded what felt like miles of tube for the dairy industry. Walking the cup was a skill the pro's pro always had in their pocket. Like anything else worth doing it takes tons of practice. I learned by running a strip of masking tape around the tube. The cup leaves a mark on the tape so you can see how even.... or wonky your path is.
