I was planning to get this camera. Thanks for mentioning the USB charging. This gets rid of the need to carry additional charging kits. Always good for a travel camera.
Thanks for the review. I just found that the WX500 replaces the WX350 in Sony's lineup. I agree that the apps and the Playmemories app are what set these point and shoot cameras apart from those offered by Nikon and Cannon. I love the fact you can control more than one Sony camera with the Playmemories app and add more functionality to the camera itself.
Bought it at Aldi for 189 EUR to use as a hidden snapshot camera to complement my Canon D60. Used its creative programs a lot (never did on D60) and I am absolutely satisfied with this camera. Put it in your jeans pocket and take it anywhwere.
I don't recommend you to buy a new battery - instead u can buy a good power bank and plug the camera to it and enjoy your many hours of video or photo shooting - i use this method on my sony zv - 1and im so happy
I use this camera to make Stop Motion Animations, and I realised as I slowly moved other objects into the frame (depending what they were), the photos would turn out darker or lighter, how do I turn this auto brightness off, I have searched through the camera but I can't figure it out, there must be an auto brightness setting somewhere, can you help me?
+David Mills Unfortunately you can't attach wireless microphones to this camera. The only other option is if you record the audio on an external device and sync it to the video later on in post.
+David Mills There really isn't a compatible brand because there is no mic input BUT the Rode smartlav + will allow you to connect the mic to your smartphone so you can record the audio separately and sync it later.

Thanks man! It does not have 4k video video. Only full HD. When filming the maximum time limit per clip is 29min. Although, battery life if you're just filming I would say is 2-3 hours. Give or take.

Just purchased this camera. I don't understand how image size and aspect ratio work. I want to enlarge and create a canvas on line but keep getting the message 'low resolution'. What am i doing wrong?
Do you mean you want to use this as a wallpaper for your pc? If yes, make sure that the aspect ratio is 16:9 and that your picture quality is set to the best setting.
+Roshan Kanesan If its for vlogging, the WX500 is a cheaper option than the HX90, the only thing you would be missing out on the higher model is the pop up viewfinder and the control ring and the grip. If you don't think you need this for vlogging, I think the WX500 is the way to go.
This is the reason why i bought this camera, it's amazing zoom. I have a sample vlog on my channel using this camera. Though my video is very shaky because i didn't realize that intelligent active is the strongest stabilization mode.

Oh congrats if you do start off a YT channel. For its compactness and because its reasonably cheap. This camera would probably be one of the best ones to go with for sure.
Hi John, many thanks for your review of this camera. I will definitely be adding this to my collection of Sony point and shoot cameras. I own an RX100 vii, ZV-1 mki, HX-80 and waiting for a delivery of an HX60 thru ebay. For extra grip I've added Smallrig cages to the RX, ZV and managed to shoe horn the HX-80 into a ZV cage for protection. The camera mount on the 80 is plastic and I hate removing screw threads from it for fear of crossthreading the plastic. With the cage attached the only potential damage would be to the cage. It looks quite classy and adds grip to the camera. I'm wondering if I added a cage the WX500 if that would solve the grip problem? Cheers.

Tripod will be easy to get cause there are so many to choose from but the ring light might be difficult. Keen to see what you come up with for your setup though.

Is the viewfinder, the GPS, the control ring on the lens. Those are the main differences. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like time lapse is available for both cameras. There isn't anything you can add to the camera to improved audio. You can record sound separately using an audio device and sync it later on in post but I think that it would be too much effort.

How long does this camera film for? I saw that certain cameras had different film times. And also, can you continue on a video? (Not sure that makes sense but what I mean is, can you film a video, then pause but them continue filming from that same video?) thank you for the helpful info!
The camera can go to 29mins and then it'll stop but you can start filming again straight afterward. As for your other question, you unfortunately can't pause the recording and start it again.

Any dedicated video camera can do it actually. Just for point and shoots and DSLRS and mirrorless have 29min limits, otherwise its classified as a video camera and end up being more expensive.
Unfortunately it isn't. You can remove the card from the camera and get an adapter that plugs into your phone though to get some photos off it? Do you have an android or iphone cause they should have wifi built into the phone.

Hehe thats okay. From memory I don't remember having an issue. I think it should be fine in terms of keeping up with the exposure. Although, the only thing I think it may struggle with is if you have some backlighting from possibly the sun when you're filming yourself.
Hey John, I have just watched your reviews on the HX90, RX100M2 and this one, obviously and I am very impressed! Very very good reviews. I am a pretty amateur vlogger/film maker wanting to step it up a notch in terms of camera quality, upgrading from my iPhone to one of the suggested models above. The reason I am looking for a new camera is because in a few weeks I am heading off to Kilimanjaro to trek up the mountain and then go on a safari and am looking for a suitable camera. I'm pretty torn between the WX500 and the HX90 mainly due to the RX being a bit too pricey, and I was wondering which one you would recommend out of the two? By the looks of things the WX500 seems to have a better microphone, but doesn't have a grip on it. Anyway, i'll stop twitter on and let you get back to me haha. Essentially my question is which out of the WX500 and the HX90 would you recommend? :-) (quick last question, how long do the batteries last when recording and how long do they then take to charge back up)

I wonder if this Camera is Highly Recommended for lond distance photos. Examples say if you were sitting on the top level of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, The Wembley, MCG or any Football Stadium thats big. Im going overseas for a few super awesome soccer matches but I want to get this camera if its camera is good compared to my Sony Xperia z3.

It might be best to use manual settings and possibly shoot in continuous lighting and turn off Auto ISO.

Both are very similar and will give you the same quality. It really comes down to the hardware. If you want to save a few dollars, go with the WX800.

You can use a self timer or use the app that you can download onto your smartphone.

On the WX500 you don't get GPS and the control wheel on the lens of the camera and you lose the grip which has the HX90 has.

It has a better codec for video which is the XAVCS codec and is a great option to use, especially if you intend on editing your videos.

Hi John. Very nice and detailed review. I have a question. Is the flash auto popup or manually controlled via a button? Also If I have to compare this with Nikon S9900 which one would you suggest?
+Rahul Satpute You need to manually pop up the flash by sliding the switch on top of the camera.

@@JohnSisonPhotography Oh sorry, I meant when you're filming yourself and you walk out from your house where it's dark then go outside where it's brighter. Does it struggle to switch light exposure on your face?
Hehe thats okay. From memory I don't remember having an issue. I think it should be fine in terms of keeping up with the exposure. Although, the only thing I think it may struggle with is if you have some backlighting from possibly the sun when you're filming yourself.
Can memory stick duo be inserted into the card reader slot ?
Is that the small memory stick thats roughly the size of an SD card? If so, then yes.
Hey John, I have just watched your reviews on the HX90, RX100M2 and this one, obviously and I am very impressed! Very very good reviews. I am a pretty amateur vlogger/film maker wanting to step it up a notch in terms of camera quality, upgrading from my iPhone to one of the suggested models above. The reason I am looking for a new camera is because in a few weeks I am heading off to Kilimanjaro to trek up the mountain and then go on a safari and am looking for a suitable camera.
I'm pretty torn between the WX500 and the HX90 mainly due to the RX being a bit too pricey, and I was wondering which one you would recommend out of the two? By the looks of things the WX500 seems to have a better microphone, but doesn't have a grip on it. Anyway, i'll stop twitter on and let you get back to me haha. Essentially my question is which out of the WX500 and the HX90 would you recommend? :-) (quick last question, how long do the batteries last when recording and how long do they then take to charge back up)

The app I used was Sony's "Imaging Edge" app. It would be under the heading "SteadyShot" in the menu.

Nope. It was the internal microphone that I was using.

I wonder if this Camera is Highly Recommended for lond distance photos. Examples say if you were sitting on the top level of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, The Wembley, MCG or any Football Stadium thats big. Im going overseas for a few super awesome soccer matches but I want to get this camera if its camera is good compared to my Sony Xperia z3.
+ShadowAussie101 It would be good compared to the Z3. In terms of zooming in at a long distance, its definitely capable of getting some good shots in stadiums.

There should be a bin icon on the camera. If you hit that button while you're playing back the photos, it should allow you to delete the photos.

Yeah definitely. For this type of camera and price range, I would say its one of the top cameras to get.
Hey John. I'm looking for a way to adjust the ISO setting when in video mode. It always say "This operation or setting not availble as follows" What should I do if I don't want my ISO to be always auto? Thanks!
