  • In this pet care video we are going to learn how to give subcutaneous fluids to a cat. There are many reasons your veterinarian may prescribe sq fluids. The primary reason is to correct dehydration, which may be due to an acute illness or a chronic illness such as kidney failure. SQ fluids can be very effective in treating dehydration. This video is NOT meant to replace the advice of your regular vet.

I'm so glad I'm not alone with this. My cat just turned 16 and I've been giving her fluids now for 2 weeks. Sometimes I get the full 100cc in, sometimes not.

Is it because they move and the needle sticks out? or is it because of the tissue resistance when there is more than 50cc already in?

Best How To video I've seen for giving a cat subq fluids. Easy to follow, on point, clear visuals. Clarese (20 year old cat) and I always go to our bed where I surround her with a giant body pillow and pin the fluid bag to the wall up high behind her. It's perfect. She's used to it now so she was in here waiting on me tonight. Just one tiny problem tonight though (thus, why I'm online watching videos). I am left handed and she curled up on the right side of me up against the headboard of our bed and is so damn cute and comfy that I don't want to move her! I tried once using my right hand but she growled and moved and the needle came out. So, if you plan to do subq fluids on your cat, make sure you put them in the position best suited if you're left or right handed because after a few weeks, they will actually come to YOU for the fluids (associating feeling better with the experience) and may plop down and chill in a position that won't work!

Sometimes it's not easy. I have a cat who is very cooperative -- the vet loves her -- but there are days when she doesn't want to be still and we just do the best that we can. The goal is to keep her happy and alive and well, not crabby and well. Sometimes you only manage to get half of the dose in. That's OK.

@teellbee That is an excellent point. Passing the fluid line through a simple warm bowl of water may help. There are warmers that can be used. Caution with microwaves as over heating bag can be dangerous. Ask your veterinarian how to warm fluids.

glad they mention "going too flat" could lead to needle going in and sticking back out. so when that happens, what do you do? all the vids show effortless, mistake-free procedures and don't mention what to do if it goes wrong. also agree that needle should be replaced for storage, another vid said store with the used needle and change right before the next administration.

I sit on the floor to administer the IV, first pulling the cat into my lap to pet him a few times, and then start to insert the needle. I push him all the way down onto the floor, so that his front legs are folded, to keep him from trying to walk around. He makes some attempts to roll over onto his back, but it's easier to deal with than him trying walk away while the drip is going and the needle is still in his neck.

  • @jogordon1530

You have to be kidding ! I takes 3 people to hassle my cat down in order to give him the SUBQ fluids and sometimes we don’t get a full treatment because he is squirming so much that the needle either falls out or he ends up biting or scratching someone to get away. We have tried everything the doctor has suggested and we still have not been able to get a full treatment done with our cat. What kind of drug did you give this cat (in the video) to relax? We need a bottle of Jack Daniels to get our cat relaxed! Great video but not all cats are alike.

I know it depends on each cat, but first I struggled with my cat as well, but per my friend (a retired vet) advice, instead of focusing on holding him down, focusing on the cat's favorite scratch place - my cat's chin scratch - and he became much calmer and the fluid delivery became constantly successful. Also, I warm up the fluid every time and that makes my cat calmer. Also, I bought thinner sharper needles from Terumo (gage 20G thinwall etc) and that helped tremendously my cat's comfort level. Hope this therapy went well with you cat...

@@Thankful456 I found out later that the vet assistant was giving the fluid too fast. So after about 5 treatments, I suggested we let the fluid in very slowly and Midnight eventually settled down. Yes, I agree, the needle size is also an option but my vet didn’t suggest it. Three months after trying everything, Midnight was put down due to kidney failure. In my opinion, the vet did not do enough and when I do decide to get another cat, I won’t be going through that vet. The people she hires are not “experienced assistants” and the girl that was showing up to give Midnight his SUBQ fluids had no vet experience at all !! So I was $500 in the hole financially after putting my sweet boy through this horror and he didn’t survive anyway. Midnight was 13 with FIV. He lived a very good life but I should have seen the signs and I didn’t - horrible throwing up occasionally, hiding in spots throughout the house and the weight loss. My other two cats lived to 19 and 18 and never had issues with their kidneys. Sometimes I wonder if those once a year vaccinations don’t have something to do with animal health problems much like the human doctors of today who prescribe pill after pill and do we really live longer with all the pills?

I'm getting very frustrated! I started subq fluids on my cat four days ago. There has been only one day that I got the needle in without it going through and leaking all over his fur. He has been getting his fluids, but I have to poke him more than once to get it right and I feel so bad having to do that. I think maybe what I'm doing wrong is I'm not aiming the needle a little downward as shown in this video. He's really skinny so it's hard pulling up his skin to make a tent. And also, I don't see a lump forming although I know the fluids are going in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was too late. I should have started him on fluids a year earlier but I was out of town for an extended period of time then & didn't know he was starting to get bad. My husband didn't notice anything different but when I got home I noticed right away that he had lost weight. At that point is when I should have started the fluids but by the time I started he was already in renal failure and I ended up having to put him to sleep a week later. He was 2 months shy of his 18th birthday. My brother had a cat, however, that he started on fluids right away and his cat lived another 4 years.

Usually I get it in properly by the 4th time but tonight I just couldn't do it. My cat is 18 and doing well but very skinny. @@CTY2023 I got it back! I first gave myself told myself to stop worrying, which was making it worse, and then I realized that I was making too much of the "tent" thing - it was really just pulling up the skin so you could get the needle under (I was all caught up in thinking it had to go through the teepee "door"....yup, crazy, don't ask...!) and lastly I reminded myself - it's "sub" cutaneous, it goes under the skin and that's it, and when I envisioned doing that, it worked. I also have noticed that when he is still better hydrated it's easier to do -I think the skin is all limp and thin like that when he is more in need of hydration. So you might want to do it a little earlier once just to get back in the swing of things. (But don't change the amount unless your vet says so.) And here's the final thing which is probably what made the real difference, haha - I got a thinner needle. I hope you get rolling again!
