I just did it for the first time today on my 14yr old Cat who was recently diagnosed w chronic kidney/pancreatitis. It's truly amazing how easy it is... this was a great video but noticed you didn't mention that the needle where there's the indent opening must always face up to allow fluid flow. This is as important knowing how to stick needle in. Depending on how fast you want the liquid to flow depends on the size of needle too... of course 18g would be faster since the opening is slightly larger then the 20g and Cats can use either or. I was given both sizes by my Vet to try. Just depends on the owner's preference. My Vet also said I can replace the line after 2 or 3 bag use. That it's completely fine. My cat was feeling so much better after administering the sub Q fluids. I truly enjoy all your wonderful videos on pet care. Thank you!
Very clear explanation ...thank you... One thing I do , is I immediately replace the used needle with a new one ...that way I never use the old needle by mistake ...
Lewis could care less haha. So calm. I just did this for the second time as per ER and vet instructions because my dog may have eaten raisins and already had kidney issues so we're playing it safe (been checking bloodwork levels too)! Now if I can only get better at replacing the needle. Careful not to prick your finger doing that! I'm shocked how relaxed my dog is when I do this. Was very nervous to try this but pet poison hotline and ER both been so kind about answering my zillion questions. It's not too hard. I turned music on and give him lots of praise and kisses.

Ok .. great demonstration doc.. but what if my 25 lb pet dog has more skin to tent above the shoulders ? Is it ok to go above the shoulders to neck scruff area where he has more loose skin? Thanks great demonstration all around an especially for a confidence booster ..
I have watched several of these instructional videos...this is one of the best. Thanks to Dr. Jones for making this, and providing the detailed "how to" comments.
The video is great because it teaches how easy this can be. As a registered nurse I only care for human patients but my dog is now sick with AKI and in need of fluids. My first feedback on the video gives you one big thumbs up for showing people that it is not difficult to give Subcutaneous fluids. The second feedback has to be a BIG thumbs down on the lack of sterile technique. Sterile technique is equally important when caring for pets and human patients. It is CRUCIAL to keep the spike that goes into the IV bag , sterile. Same applies to the end of the line. Also, A BIG NO NO, recapping a needle and reusing it.
How fascinating! With me working in the human medical field, and not knowing much about veterinary medicine, the idea of giving sub q fluids sounds like a form of torture lol. great video!
Dr. Jones where do we purchase IV fluids and needles? Do we need a prescription? My cat is in the early stages of CKD being managed by diet Hill's K/D, but this is good info to know for later if needed. Thanks for the great video!
But you are holding the spike without a sterile cap on the end and waving it around. We can’t do that with people because it contaminates the spike and then the fluid. Is it okay to wave around the spike without a protective cap like that before you spike the bag in pets? Serious question, as I never uncap a spike with humans until just before I spike bag and I make sure spike never touches anything else.
Floflok K Yeah thats what our Vetphysician said to us. It'd be contaminated if you sway it around or held it longer in the air. So dont do that if so buy a new one.
Hi, NaCl is .9%, same concentration as blood, but nothing else added. LRS contains: sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in water. It is used for replacing fluids and electrolytes in those who have low blood volume or low blood pressure In practice we would almost always use LRS, as we are replace lost electrolytes and raising Blood Pressure. NaCl was used for situations where we didn't want to additional potassium ( ie Addisons). or where there was an existing metabolic acidosis ( as can be in diabetes(
yah, I accidentally pulled the cap off the needle too hard and boomeranged the needle into my finger-oh, did I bleed and hurt. Best to have them do it if you can.
I don't like 18 gauge needles unless you have to give fluids very fast. However, most dogs don't seem to mind. My dog decided to scream when it went in and made me jump and start shaking that I hurt him. I'm a nurse and people always say that I'm so gentle with injections, so it was awful to see my dog jump and hear him cry like that when he never cries. Am I doing something wrong? I switched to a 23 gauge needle but it just takes too long for the fluids to go on. He has kidney disease and won't eat or drink unless he has some fluids on board, which drops his creatinine level and makes him feel better. I'm going to try a 21 gauge needle tomorrow and go in a little more slowly to see if that helps.
When can you stop sub q fluids? Our 12 yr old dog has Cushings and diabetes. On May 2, 2022 she began vomiting so we rushed her to the vet. We found out she had a BUN of 48 and we were told to give 150 ml of fluids. We gave them every other day because the vet really offered no advice or guidance. Then we brought her to another vet on june 18, 2022. She was seen by another vet. To our shock her BUN had jumped up to 82 despite the fluids we had been giving her every other day. This ER vet said give her fluids twice a day. Unfortunately, she couldn’t tolerate the needle so we were doing good getting one treatment of 150 ml in every day. We were very concerned but were doing all we could had hoped for the best. Today we brought her in to see a third vet to get her kidneys rechecked and to our surprise her BUN was at 29. He said stop all fluids and bring her back in for a recheck in 3 months. Why would he want us to stop the fluids? One vet said every other day. Another vet said twice a day and the last vet said stop giving her any fluids. Why doesn’t he assume the fluids helped her get back down to 29? I’m hoping someone can explain it to me because while the fluids are very hard to give her I don’t want to see her BUN go back up again. I’m trying to understand what helped her number to go down.
My vet charged me $50 for 1lt of 0.9 sodium chloride... Only after I begged him to give me a discount he lowered the cost to $20.... 😕 but you mentioned lactated ringers can be purchased for $3 or $5..... Are they almost the same? My dog has acute kidney failure..... 😕
Dr. Jones - You mention that Sub-Q fluids should be administered for no more than 30 days. My vet has my dog on fluids every other day in perpetuity. I'm obviously not asking you to diagnose my dog, but is every other day OK with kidney disease? Also, given I administer so often, can I/should I administer away from the neck area occasionally? She seems to get a little sore once in awhile. Thank you in advance for your feedback.
My pom just had pups and I was trying to keep pups warm but think I overheated her so when she got up this morning she drank and drank until she puled and has been puking all day and looks miserable. My husband's a nurse tech and going to nursing school so he's helping me give her some fluids but I'm scared I'm not giving her enough. She's not wanting to eat but she will drink some but can't hold it down. Anything you recommend?
What about just using a syringe without the drip line to put the fluids directly under the skin? Is there a reason we need to use a drip line? I have just used a large syringe filled with ringers in the past, and that seems to work well also. Any reason not to do it this way? Thanks!
Uhg. I tried on my 13lb poodle/terrier mix w/renal disease because i need to give him 100mls twice a week, but he could not handle the pain of an 18g needle. I tried a 25g needle w/success of placement but it was so small it wouldn't flow. So frustrating. I know a vet tech wouldnt have a problem but i am for some reason.
Hi would really love your opinion on my dogs bun and creatinine levels. 54 range is (6-31) Last month they were higher at 70. Creatinine is 2.1 range is (0.5-1.6) She is on baytril right now for a uti she gets them frequently. I feed her home made food I just switched to a low oxalate because she has had struvite crystals in the past. She gets sub-q fluids 2x a week. Calcium and phosphorous are good. Im not sure when to just let her go and stop the fluids at what blood levels? She's eating fine right now. Thanks Michelle
Doc I owe you a lot. But I have a Qusetion! Im not confident enough to prick my GS-German shepherd dog- And How would I know if its in the right "under skin"? Coz Im scared to prick him.
I believe you stated, 100ml would be good for a cat so my question is what's the general amount you'd give to a dog such as a lab? Also, better yet, is there a figure that coincides with their weight such as when you gave recommendations for fish oil (I believe for allergies) to be supplemented at 1000mg/10lbs, as an example.
Hello doctor how are you? i am a vet from Egypt and I wanted to ask about Polydipsia in dogs.I noticed that dogs infected with parvovirus that they drink massive amounts of water even when I put the dog on I.V fluids. Can you please explain to me the cause of this phenomenon and thanks in advance
We have a sheep that is really sick and we are going to give sub Q fluids. How do you know how often to give it? Is it based on how they are feeling and responding or based on once or twice a day?
Dr. Jones, Thank you for sharing thy wisdom. Doctor, would dialysis be preferred over sub Q fluids and by any chance can dialysis help curing renal failure completely f my Rotweiller with creatinine (6.3 MG) BUN (88 MG)?
My puppy is 28lbs. He was given 250ml of subcutaneous fluids on Tuesday morning at the vet, and then 250ml Wednesday morning. Is this enough to kill a puppy by "fluid overload"?
Doc can you help me. My dog has a viral infection. And he is at our home with a dextrose lactated ringer. And his feet became bigger because of the dextrose attached to him what can I do to relieved the bumpness on his feet. Its too pricey if I bring him to vet again.
My puppy has Parvo and I have to give her fluids thru the skin. Hopefully I can do this at home. I just found out today so I'm watching a bunch of videos.
Both my dogs had parvo last june 2020 and i have two Chihuahuas and gavd them lactated ringerz 100 ml twice a day and Pectalin paste to stop diarrhea its a probiotic to help their digestive system cuz pavo just turns theid imsides to mush. Keep them hydrated on fluids get anti nauseous med from ur vet also and bout the 5th day they should start eating again and moving around better. I staydd with both of them 24/7. The first 72 hours are critical to keep them from diarrhea and vomiting. After 72 hrs if they made it they will likely recover for sure. My pups survived and day 7 they were back to causimg cahos lol. I hope ur pup did well and recovered. Good thing is once they get parvo they wont get again amd if so they prolly wont show symptoms becausd their body can fight it off now. But its a nasty disease. Vaccinate ur pets. U can do it urself as well they sell vaccines at Tractor supply.
@@aliennemesis0663 wow. In my country vets just put down puppies with parvo. Vet care in my country is a joke. I have never heard a vet mention subcutaneous fluids and that it can be done at home. My brother's dog died of dehydration and he took her to the vet every day for 6 days for some injections. What injections? Who knows? The vet didn't get around to explaining that to my brother, but he didn't forget to bill him.
@@Freya1412 well thats sad to here. My dog and his sister aslo got parvo a week later. June of 2020. From my experience the key is to keep them hydrated with subcutaneous fluids (lactated ringer) most vet will sell u a 1000 ml bag or jusg order on ebay. I have a bag kept always just incase. 20 gauge needle as well. Amd the next thing is stop them from having diarrhea which causes severe dehydration. For this u will want a probiotic paste. Called Pro Pectalin. Its a lifesaver. Give it to them every 8 hrs 100 ml of subcutaneous fluids twice a day. This was for my 10 pound Chihuahuas though. If u do home treatment its best to be by there side for the first 72 hours after symptoms show giving them treatment. The first 72 hours is the worst my vet said. If they survive after 72 hours their survival rate is really likely to recover. Both my dogs begin to show improvement on day 4 and day 5 they finally wanted to take food with boiled chiken breast and white rice. By day 7 both dogs were eating and drinkin on their own and wanting to play again. But both kf them fully recovered and both today are still enjoying life. Vet says once they have parvo, they will never get it again amd if so you might not even can tell cuz they're immune system can fight it off alot easier and may not even show signs.
Dear doc jones Is it okay if i use the infusion set and needle that still has the original package and seal without i ever open but the problem is that its been expired, is it still allright to use? I really hope i got respond. Thank you.
My 16 year old Westie was given sub q fluids Saturday, by Monday he was dead. I had the vet do a necropsy. She said he had spleen and liver tumors that ruptured, causing his death. Is it possible that the sub q fluids contributed to his death?
Anyone know if this will make my dog eat? He hasn’t eaten in about 24 hours/ I took him to the vet yesterday where they told me he was diabetic, gave him fluids and sent me home with 100ccs insulin and an IV bag- $500 and i really feel dooped because he’s losing weight fast and still won’t eat
I cant afford to go to the vet for my cat also he is so bad and has never been outside he is an indoor cat and is terrified of the outside also cant get the bags in uk without prescription please will someone help me reply pls
Please use an assistant for close ups and help with camera. I need more details. Boy did I get myself with the needle. I couldn't get cap off needle and I pulled too hard.
Dr. Jones I'm so worried for our dog Snowball. He hasn't been eating or eating like he used to. I paid 1K in vet clinic for x rays, sq & IV fluids. Imma na try this until he gets back to his usual self. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have 14 cats, I have had them for 5 years. One of them has kidney cancer and is fading fast. I feed most of them dry kibble. Should I soak the kibble first in water, and for how long? I feed so bad and guilty for my cat, Jake's condition. I always feel guilty when someone I love so much has died or is dying. I feel like I must have missed something, and did not do enough. Does that link provide everything I need to hydrate him at home? My vet wants to do this to him twice a week at $27.00 a visit. Can my cat be just as hydrated by giving him electrolyte liquid supplements in the mouth?
Hi Joe, 1. the canned food is far better- as for the cause of the kidney disease, we don't know. Yes you can learn how to properly give subcu fluids on my video, but your vet should also be willing to show you
Veterinary Secrets Thank you. I don't think they will show me, that would cut into their profits. I see from the link where I can get the bag, but do they sell the needles and the drip cords?
+Veterinary Secrets For dehydration, is there a general guideline of how much fluid per pound should be given? The sweet lab in the video receiving 100ml is (I'm guessing) 40lbs? So would it generally be 25ml per 10lbs? I know it can vary per vet instructions. I'm just curious if there's a general rule of thumb for weight. Thanks for making the video.
Hi my Pom's kidney's are starting to give her some issue. One kidney is doing fine the other has an elevated bun and creatine with a mild potassium elevation. She wants to do Sub-Q and a kidney diet. She hasn't mentioned how long she wanted to do the Sub-Q fluids tho. What do you suggest? Thanks :)
Hi, 1. More fluid add to dry kibble, or more canned food. 2. ALOH - it is a supplement that will bind phosphorus, which is the nutrient damaging the kidneys. 3. Avoid the low protein foods now- they are only for advanced renal failure
Please Doctor thanks for your kindness My German Shepard has got pavo and it is dehydrating frequently I have sent it to the vert all their efforts had failed I have tried the infusion but there is a swell which made me removed Please how come that issue If given me names of medicine which when I buy I can treat it at home. Four days no food No water It vomit any food I give her and water Thanks so much Dorc Best regards Benjamin Attobrah Ackah from Ghana

Ok .. great demonstration doc.. but what if my 25 lb pet dog has more skin to tent above the shoulders ? Is it ok to go above the shoulders to neck scruff area where he has more loose skin?
Thanks great demonstration all around an especially for a confidence booster ..
I have watched several of these instructional videos...this is one of the best. Thanks to Dr. Jones for making this, and providing the detailed "how to" comments.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching, Ron.
Thanks
How fascinating! With me working in the human medical field, and not knowing much about veterinary medicine, the idea of giving sub q fluids sounds like a form of torture lol. great video!
I did this for 6 months with a cat with kidney failure. It was a 2 person job to distract the cat with treats and stay still and not wander around.
Thank you - great video. Do you have a video showing me how to administer with a syringe?
Welcome- but good future suggestion
Thank you for this information, Dr. Jones. What is the difference between sodium chloride and lactated ringers? My vet has given me both for my dog
Hi, NaCl is .9%, same concentration as blood, but nothing else added.
LRS contains: sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in water. It is used for replacing fluids and electrolytes in those who have low blood volume or low blood pressure
In practice we would almost always use LRS, as we are replace lost electrolytes and raising Blood Pressure. NaCl was used for situations where we didn't want to additional potassium ( ie Addisons). or where there was an existing metabolic acidosis ( as can be in diabetes(
Veterinary Secrets Good to know. Thank you, doctor. Happy holidays!
paid 500bucks for this at the vet today. I'd say i paid for the knowledge
yah, I accidentally pulled the cap off the needle too hard and boomeranged the needle into my finger-oh, did I bleed and hurt. Best to have them do it if you can.
Thank you for this helpful video!
You're most welcome!
Great instruction on how to do this. Being shocked on our dog having kidney problems is not the best time to retain any knowledge at the vet.
Kidney failure, we do this every day w a 15 yr old Jack Russell, it is no fun, but he may live a few more years, he deserves every day.
I hope so- good for you to be doing this
I don't like 18 gauge needles unless you have to give fluids very fast.
Good video Dr. Jones, Thanks a lot.
You are welcome- Thanks
Thank you very much Sir my puppy need fluid today, but all vet are close. Than I use your technic I hope its work.
Hi Jose, They are very similar, and the cost is minimal to your veterinarian
thank you very much doctor.... your video was a great help for me.
Thanks
Yes, safe long term and for some animals that is what is needed - as yours
thanks for all your help with your video s and I share your video s with all my friends and family.we all thank you very much .u are great.
Thanks Sarah
Thanks Doc!
Quick question: Sub-Q D5/D10 is not usually recommend, what’s your opinion on the matter? 4-6 week puppy hypothermic/hypoglycaemic?
Thank you for the video, it is very helpful for me.
You’re kool Dr Andrew.
:-)
Thank you so much. This was so informative
Happy to help!
Great video ... very informative.
You are welcome
Our 16 yr old 4.8 lb Multipoo has acute kidney failure, performed my first subcutaneous fluid procedure. Not much excess fat for daily injections. :(
What about just using a syringe without the drip line to put the fluids directly under the skin? Is there a reason we need to use a drip line? I have just used a large syringe filled with ringers in the past, and that seems to work well also. Any reason not to do it this way? Thanks!
The drip line allows you to easily put it under the skin, and as it goes slowly most pets tolerate it well. not so with a syringe
Thank you! This was very helpful.
Welcome
Can I give my dog 5% dextrose with lactated ringer subcutaneously?
this helped me a lot doctor.subscribed
Thanks
My dog is really sore is it safe to give it somewhat beside the back
Hi would really love your opinion on my dogs bun and creatinine levels.
Hi - it's based on her eating- if she is well enough to eat, then stay with the subcu fluids
Hi doc, how bout is it the same sites for injections
Doc I owe you a lot.
But I have a Qusetion!
Im not confident enough to prick my GS-German shepherd dog-
And How would I know if its in the right "under skin"?
Coz Im scared to prick him.
Hello doc can a dog eat and drink while on dextrose?
Should you let the fluid in the drip chamber fully empty out or just take the needle out once you re-clip the line
Hi, just re-clip the line when you reach desired amount and remove the needle. No need to empty it.
What happens if you hang the bag in a low hanger? Is it going to stop dripping?
Hello doctor how are you? i am a vet from Egypt and I wanted to ask about Polydipsia in dogs.I noticed that dogs infected with parvovirus that they drink massive amounts of water even when I put the dog on I.V fluids. Can you please explain to me the cause of this phenomenon and thanks in advance
How much should we give to a 4 month puppy
You are the best
Hey Dr. Jones I would like to ask If what to do If the IV Fluid stops dropping? I will appreciate it alot thank you.
I reposition the needle, or I pull up the skin
How many times a week should I do this? I have a 30 kg dog.
We have a sheep that is really sick and we are going to give sub Q fluids. How do you know how often to give it? Is it based on how they are feeling and responding or based on once or twice a day?
Hi,
In general I have given fluids twice daily until they start drinking again- hope your ewe/lamb is OK
Im so proudly when i seen ur video, Viele danke :D
Good day Guys, I just want to ask what I'm going to do, I neglected the liquid dextrose attached to my dog's arm, it's too swollen now

Dr. Jones, Thank you for sharing thy wisdom. Doctor, would dialysis be preferred over sub Q fluids and by any chance can dialysis help curing renal failure completely f my Rotweiller with creatinine (6.3 MG) BUN (88 MG)?
It is far better, but not readily available in vet medicine
My puppy is 28lbs. He was given 250ml of subcutaneous fluids on Tuesday morning at the vet, and then 250ml Wednesday morning. Is this enough to kill a puppy by "fluid overload"?
Thanks for sharing!!
great information, thank you
can i use d5w fluid?
How much of the fluid should I be giving my 60 pound pitbull?
Doc can you help me. My dog has a viral infection. And he is at our home with a dextrose lactated ringer. And his feet became bigger because of the dextrose attached to him what can I do to relieved the bumpness on his feet. Its too pricey if I bring him to vet again.
Thank you
My puppy has Parvo and I have to give her fluids thru the skin. Hopefully I can do this at home. I just found out today so I'm watching a bunch of videos.
How is your dog now ?
How many milliliter should I give my 30 kg dog?
Dear doc jones
Is it okay if i use the infusion set and needle that still has the original package and seal without i ever open but the problem is that its been expired, is it still allright to use? I really hope i got respond. Thank you.
Yes OK
My 16 year old Westie was given sub q fluids Saturday, by Monday he was dead. I had the vet do a necropsy. She said he had spleen and liver tumors that ruptured, causing his death. Is it possible that the sub q fluids contributed to his death?
How many doseged ml to inject in adog in 6month
Wow, thank you so much. This is fantastic to know🌹🌺🥰
Anyone know if this will make my dog eat? He hasn’t eaten in about 24 hours/ I took him to the vet yesterday where they told me he was diabetic, gave him fluids and sent me home with 100ccs insulin and an IV bag- $500 and i really feel dooped because he’s losing weight fast and still won’t eat
I cant afford to go to the vet for my cat also he is so bad and has never been outside he is an indoor cat and is terrified of the outside also cant get the bags in uk without prescription please will someone help me reply pls
Sir I have 1 query. How much time does it takes for the fluid to spread in the whole body?
the fluid is gradually absorbed over several hours (it may take up to 8 hours for all the fluid to be absorbed).
@@VeterinarySecrets Thank you Sir.
I think my dog got the fox tail out due to there has been no swelling and he's stop sneezing and his eyes are not watery anymore.
doc pls help my puppy she have a bloated stomach what can i do plss help me
Thank you.
Please use an assistant for close ups and help with camera. I need more details. Boy did I get myself with the needle. I couldn't
get cap off needle and I pulled too hard.
Dr. Jones I'm so worried for our dog Snowball. He hasn't been eating or eating like he used to. I paid 1K in vet clinic for x rays, sq & IV fluids. Imma na try this until he gets back to his usual self. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Is there a trick to keeping fluids from leaking out?
Just give smaller amounts at a time
HOW MUCH CAN YOU GIVE A DOG AT 1 TIME? IF DOG IS SEVERELY DEHYDRATED SHOULD YOU DO A CERTAIN AMOUNT EVERY HOUR OR EVERY FEW HOURS?
where can I get LR without a script? thnx.
Hi, here is one option..www.pet360.com/product/rx249/lactated-ringers-electrolyte-replacement-fluid
Hi Joe,
1. the canned food is far better- as for the cause of the kidney disease, we don't know.
Hi there's a few bubbles in the line and I'm nervous about giving it..i drained the line but still a few bubbles
Safe if giving subcu
Hi my Pom's kidney's are starting to give her some issue. One kidney is doing fine the other has an elevated bun and creatine with a mild potassium elevation. She wants to do Sub-Q and a kidney diet. She hasn't mentioned how long she wanted to do the Sub-Q fluids tho. What do you suggest? Thanks :)
Hi,
1. More fluid add to dry kibble, or more canned food.
2. ALOH - it is a supplement that will bind phosphorus, which is the nutrient damaging the kidneys.
3. Avoid the low protein foods now- they are only for advanced renal failure
+Veterinary Secrets I tried googling Aloh can't seem to find it.
Hi Michelle, here is a link; www.thrivingpets.com/index.php/aluminum-hydroxide.html
would I need this if her phosphate levels aren't elevated? Have you ever heard of Aminavast?
is there a link to buy that aloh?
Please Doctor thanks for your kindness
My German Shepard has got pavo and it is dehydrating frequently I have sent it to the vert all their efforts had failed I have tried the infusion but there is a swell which made me removed
Please how come that issue
If given me names of medicine which when I buy I can treat it at home.
Four days no food
No water
It vomit any food I give her and water
Thanks so much Dorc
Best regards Benjamin Attobrah Ackah from Ghana
IV fluids are mandatory- you need to be at a veterinarian
My s dog skick from 3 days she s not having food can I provide her drip
My cat has bad kidneys. He is eating wet food. I have been leaving some dry food out for the cats. I think he overdid it. He is pooping small amounts and thowing up.....
Can i use the old needle for drip? Please answer
Best to get a new one
It is past midnight in India and no vets open. He is in constant pain what can i help him to relieve his pain?
The situation is- he has cough, mucus from his nostrils, not eating food and very weak. The doctor has prescribed him a drip, mecopac forte(IM/IV) and Fenamol. The nurse supposed to visit home cancelled unplanned. And tomorrow is Sunday all the stores will be closed.
It would be kind of you to suggest me some idea. I have the medicines at home and new injections. But never have injected someone in my life. 😢. Please he is crying.
Hi, as it is late, with no vets open, use the old needle and drip. General amounts about 60-100ml/10lbs
