I watched several videos of vets demonstrating how to give IV fluids to one's pet. This was the most detailed. I was not placing the needle parallel to the skin, I was going in a little too vertical and the fluid did not flow very well. But when I inserted the needle at much shallower angle ( close to parallel) with the skin, then the fluids would drip much faster....Thank You for the video!!!

Excellent! I’m nervous about doing this to my cat at home. I needed a confidence booster and this vid was informative and reassuring.

Also, you're going to most likely be surprised at how thick the skin is.. tonight is my 4th time doing this with our fur baby. The first time it was very hard to do, then it was easier. I like to do a motion like I am scooping, not dipping down and mack up again, but like you're moving your. Endless and hand THROUGH something , rather than into it. If that makes sense, like following through instead of into. It help you not hesitate as much. I felt so guru I hesitated the first time and that actually made it worse or hurt more for him. Just be quick with the poke! ❤

If your cat needs it, suck it up. We've domesticated these animals and now they rely on us. We're responsible.

Don’t worry! Just keep trying! Watch the video a few times that will help and other videos (sometimes different teachers have different little tips or can explain better to your style) and don’t worry you will get it!!!! REPETITION IS YOUR BEST TEACHER 🥳🎉🎉

The Luer Screw-lock is super important with the needles and bags my vet provides, the needles don't stay on the live with just pressure/friction at all

What do you do when kitty just refuses? She growls, squirms, resists in every manner? Edit, see my response below. I forgot to add, however, that Rescue Remedy, once about .5 hr before, and again right before also has made it FAR better.

I'm here for the same question. Mine also pulls her neck tight, so you only scruff a tiny bit of fur. She'll also lurch back.
I've tried her in all different areas, with treats, with a towel wrap. And I look like a fool when I go to the vet to get it done and she's totally normal.

@@vincentg6613 I've finally had success. It requires two people. Cat on a table, the one person holds her next to her body, with free arm over the other side. Therefore hands are free to give scratches etc... Then I do the poking, and then feed her as I go with my free hand. There were touchy moments, but I was determined to not let her direct the scene. Need to get this right as it's just too expensive at the vet. So while not perfect, it worked and she's fine. Best wishes. I also got skin off center, as I poked so many times in the middle I think she was sore. Now I'll alternate between the three.

Treats and loves! There's only so much you can do, but association with treats or food can help

How do you make sure it doesn't poke through the other side?

    • @big-stinky-cactus

It's hard to describe but the way my vet showed me is to pull up a generous amount of skin behind the shoulder blades to form the "tent" with your thumb and middle finger, so your pointer finger is then free to pull up and into the side of the tented skin where you're inserting, and that method creates a wider surface area of skin on the inserting side to push the needle into. And of course only using needles that are 1/2" to 1" maximum
