2020 Subaru Legacy - An AWD sedan at an unbelievable price

  • The Subaru Legacy stands as a testament to the humble sedan in a world growing ever more crowded with crossovers and SUVs.
Shop for the new 2020 Subaru Legacy on CarGurus: cargur.us/xH2Fz
The Subaru Legacy doesn’t have a rear liftgate or enough ground clearance to go off-roading, but it does have all-wheel drive, plenty of legroom, and-best of all-the nimble handling of a sedan.
Subaru has made its mark thanks to wagons and crossovers, but the Legacy proves it can still make a good sedan, too. The boxer 4-cylinder engine under the hood of most Legacies produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, run through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) to all-wheel drive. It’s good enough to make the Legacy quick around town, but anyone hoping to drop the hammer on the highway will want the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder in Legacy XT trims. That engine’s 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque put the Legacy on the cusp of sport-sedan territory.
Inside, there’s plenty of cabin space both in the front seat and in the backseat. Up front, the 11.6-inch touchscreen runs Subaru Starlink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, although George Kennedy found its vertical orientation frustrating, and too many simple controls are buried in the system’s submenus.
Pricing for the Legacy starts at an extremely appealing $22,745 and rises to the Touring XT’s $35,895 MSRP.
For more information on the 2020 Subaru Legacy, read George’s full review on CarGurus: cargur.us/xH2DM

Just bought the 2020 Legacy limited last week. If you take a little bit of time to learn the touch screen it really is not that complicated and quite easy to navigate. It's no different when you buy a new cell phone. It takes time to figure out how to navigate through it but once you do, it just becomes second nature. Love the new legacy and not deterred by the new touch screen display at all. Great job Subaru!!! You have done a good thing here.

A car will do two things: take you somewhere, and bring you back. I think too much time on this otherwise decent review of the car was spent complaining about the infotainment screen. It’s a car: talk with me about more performance, handling, comparisons with previous models, comparisons (and contrasts) with competitive models in class, etc.

  • @jeffmorse645

You are overblowing this. The infotainment system took me all of one day to get used to. The auto stop/start disable was moved to the home screen by an update and all you have to do is reach over and touch it - easy as a physical button and no menus to go through. I like the touch screen with all its info and I'm an old fart relatively speaking compared to you. As far as the rest of the car goes - that interior is best in class. Seriously. I test drove a Mazda6 Grand Touring Reserve and the Legacy Touring XT (which I bought) is every bit as premium inside. The driver seat is the best I've ever sat in. The extendable thigh support should be in ever car for tall buyers. The exterior may be conservative, but it will age well compared to overstyled cars like the Accord, Altima and Camry. Basically, flat out love this car. Understated, premium, up-to-date in every way and fast.

Having the annoying auto start control buried in the touch screen menus is fine as long as it doesn't revert back to the on position each time you start the car, as most do. You don't say if that's the case. Otherwise, I'm fine with the touch screen- there are physical buttons and knobs for temp and basic radio functions and some redundant controls on the wheel. I had one of these as a loaner for a couple hours and it had a super smooth quiet ride that would shame many far more expensive cars. I was impressed.

I came out of a Maxima SR which was pretty stiff, this car is definitely softer sprung but when you hammer it coming out of corners with the all wheel drive it just bites and goes in the direction you point it. Power is great the 2.4 turbo has plenty of get up and go. Some of the issues in the video with the infotainment have been corrected with software updates at the dealer.

Regarding climate, mine is set to auto 99% of the time and I only change it to defrost. Why is this a big deal? I test drove the car and only thing I disliked was the buried start/stop switch. I’d prefer that the switch permanently disable it, but if Subaru won’t do that at least let me move the switch to the main screen. I’m surprised the review didn’t mention adaptive cruise and lane centering which are great features. The limited and higher trims have leather seats and an extendable thigh support that is unheard of in this class of vehicle. Legacy is my next car.

I've had a 2020 Premium since late September after having 2015 and 2017 Limiteds. It's definitely a tighter, better handling ride. I do think that you are being over critical of the infotainment system. I can, via USB, plug my Android phone into the system and get a perfectly acceptable navigation system. Likewise, a portable CD player works fine through the Media icon. Anyway, we shouldn't be making multi-step fine adjustments while driving. The basics like ventilation, heat, AC, radio are all easily accessible.

  • @loewkr
    @loewkr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The reviewer mistakenly indicates that to adjust the temperature it requires multiple steps. My premium has dedicated up and down buttons for temperature. I leave the car on Auto other than that. So this is more than simple enough.

As you moan about controls being in sub-menus you are browsing through controls that don't even exist on earlier cars. You ignore the fact that there are physical climate buttons along side the screen, and other climate controls are in a bottom panel that remains there all the time. In fact it is quite simple to drive this car and never touch a sub-menu. If you need to say, enable AVH, which is two clicks, just do it before departing.

The only issue I have with the display is the teeny, tiny, fan speed button that is hard to get while driving.
I usually will set all the other stuff while my 2020 Legacy Limited needs a few minutes to idle down after a cold start-up. During this time I will set the cabin temperature, find my radio station, and set the fan speed. I do admit that the screen needs way too much attention, so much so that the car yells at me to have my eyes on the road (I turn that off too! LOL), and so yeah, I think the touch screen needs some work.
Otherwise, I do like the car, and I am getting used to the touch screen and where to find things that I need or do not need.

I think you are making a big deal about the sub menus. The touch screen is fine. I love it, yes physical buttons are better but it’s not hard to get to the heated and ventilated seats or auto stop/start once you get use to it. The touring model interior is better the Accord, Camry, Altima and right there with Mazda 6. I looked at all of them and Subaru beats them at their own game in my opinion. The little things like AWD, front and rear ventilated disc brake, 11.6 inch tablet screen, and Napa leather that you cannot find on the others. Now the Mazda 6 does offer Napa leather which is nice but the rest doesn’t. Nissan does offer AWD but you have to pay a hefty price and settle for a lesser motor. Oh forgot to mention the driver seat hamstring extender, the precious Accord won’t give you that either.

Both my wife and I have '20 Legacy Limited's with the Harman Kardon stereo. The software update that came out in July was performed on both and the Speed Volume Control is now gone. Not to mention the Voice Image Control (seen in the video) that is not there. Very disapointing on a high end audio. Dealer doesn't care and I reached out to Subaru Canada who says to contact my dealer... I just want them to escalate the issue to tech support (no news since) . I've demosntrated the problem on 3... Legacy/Outback's with the Harman Kardon system. It's like Subaru just put the system there and didn't bother fully integrating it in their interface. It was the feature I was the most interested in the Limited trim but I should have saved thousands and gone with a cheaper trim. The Mazda 3 that I traded had a 7 "speed" volume control in its base 6 speaker audio and every base stereo now hav this simple control, not to mention all the controls under Voice Image Control.
As others have said, AVH and Auto Start/Stop should have physical controls on the console. Otherwise, they are useless when you actually want to use them. To partially defeat Auto Start/Stop, I put the transmission in Neutral when I get at a light.

Hello, I thank you for your very wonderful report on the Subaru Legacy 2020, I have a question and I hope you will answer, which is why the Japanese manufacturer has become dependent on the CVT transmission, including the Subaru because in the past it used to depend on the normal automatic transmission known to most car users and it was Powerful and enjoyable performance, especially since its engine is similar to the Porsche engines in that the movement of its cylinders is horizontal.

Camry AWD definitely looks sharper and more modern for 2020 and the user friendly controls work BETTER. Plus Toyotas standard reliability like the Corolla. I think I will just stick with TOYOTA this time around. Actually may go for a Used Low Mile HIGHLANDER and get the whole package for a lot LESS. @@TheBrownieSundownHD No car infotainment system uses open software. They all limit the screen ratio area of apple carplay and android auto access. Apple and Google have absolutely no say in how much screen if any those infotainment systems let them use. Until 2018 Toyota and Lexus did not even allow the apple carplay or android auto software to load in their infotainment systems. The way you are typing. Toyota and Lexus could not use Apple carplay before 2018 because Apple did not write code for their systems. That is as stupid as believing apple or Google have a say in the screen ratio allowed to be used.
In the 2019 Subaru forester their was two infotainment systems. They had one with a built in GPS map system. You're right on with the criticism of the touch screen. Subaru's conservative styling and performance cultivates interest from Luddites like me, then they blow it with a distracting, non-serviceable console that's sure to fail and disable the vehicle every six years or so. Add the central control board to the list of prohibitively expensive-to-replace components that ensure the early demise of our shiny new toys. I've been driving Foresters for the last 20 years and was hoping to buy a Legacy this year. But not now. I'll have to wait a year or two for Subaru to realize their mistake and start selling cars again instead of arcades.
