    John Piper is absolutely right that we shouldn't make assumptions about what people believe based on the questions they ask. That is an extremely judgmental attitude, something that Christians should keep well away from.

    • @Ancient_Path

      That is incorrect. Christians should be very discerning and we are not told to not judge in scripture, rather how to judge.

      @@Ancient_Path First, we ARE told not to judge in Scripture. In Matt 7:1 Jesus says:
      'Do not judge, so that you won't be judged.'
      There is a wrong kind of judging that Jesus refers to in this verse, and it is this kind of judging that I was referring to in my original comment.
      Second, of course we should judge in the sense of being discerning, but that wasn't what I was referring to. I was referring to the wrong kind of judging that often happens when someone makes guesses about what people believe based on questions they ask. Christians mustn't do that.

  • @lbamusic

    Thank Dr Piper for this reasoned approach. I am convinced that Almighty God knows what is in the hearts of each side, and He will judge and bring justice accordingly. A Black Pastor in Memphis made these comments about CRT and those Christians who oppose it. "They have already made their minds up,” said Johnson, who is Black. “They could really care less if I tell them about the tenets of CRT.” Johnson, who is the longtime pastor of a church in Memphis, said he sees no contradictions between the study of critical theory and Christianity, despite claims by critics that CRT conflicts with the Christian gospel.
    Critical theory looks at the way race operates in society, said Johnson. It doesn’t say anything about salvation or theology or other spiritual concerns. But it can show, he said, the way sin can permeate any system.
    “It is not an indictment of white people,” Johnson said. “It is not an indictment of individuals or groups of individuals. It is an indictment of the system and it offers a way to repair the system. But they’re not interested in any of that. So don’t waste my time.” I believe Pastor Johnson has nailed it, they have already made up their minds and don't want systemic racism and historical racism in the Church to be examined critically. But God is allowing it be done in spite of their opposition, and this frightens many Evangelicals..

    Its disappointing to see Piper misread this discussion. Its not a pejorative. Its a label to define the ideas being discussed. The counter to CRT during that debate had nothing to do with attacking that brother. Someone can be so indoctrinated, so academically persuaded by these ideas they've never heard of because the people they learned them from never called it CRT. Its like someone espousing Nazi ideas, but because they lived under a rock, had never heard of the term Nazi. Renvi (sp?) made this point. People today espouse socialist and communist ideals having never read Marx because his ideas have so saturated the conversation that it takes real intellectual discernment to recognize the ideas for what they are. Piper is off base on this one

      This is actually a disagreement over doctrine and Truth, which supersedes our desires for unity. I can have no real fellowship with someone who claims I’m a racist because I’m white. There is no unity to be found in CRT.

    • @eurekahope5310
      @eurekahope5310 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saying that white people are inherently more evil by virtue of their skin color (CRT) causes division and is on par with other forms of racism. Holy Scripture said there is neither Jew nor Greek in Christ Jesus. We can sorrow in the racism that people experience, but judging a person's guilt and innocence based on the way GOD made them is horribly divisive.

    • @cheekymoses
      @cheekymoses 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe anything should supersede a desire for unity. Christ and division don't mix. We are to pursue peace with all men... pursue it. It will not come by easily. This offense we want to hold on to is why the love of God will grow cold in the Church. As far as it depends on you, choose peace, unity, love, joy. There is only ONE doctrine that matters. Love God with everything and love your neighbour, in whatever package they come, as you love yourself. If Christ who is the SON of God gave up His place, His rights, His status, to come and die for mankind, why can we not lay aside our own hurts or feelings? Are we not called to be like Him? I am seriously wondering, where is the love? Absolutely nothing supersedes unity in the body of Christ! We are called to oneness. A house divided cannot stand. The person you easily hate or block or despise, whatever their colour or ethnicity or doctrine, Christ deemed worthy to die for. I say this to myself as well. I have no right to hate anyone Christ loved enough to die for... at least not if I call myself a Christ follower.

    • @bpaudert
      @bpaudert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate what you’re saying and I agree we should pursue peace “as much as it depends on us”. But you’re understanding of unity needs to be placed in its proper context. Truth cannot be reconciled with error and righteousness cannot be reconciled with sin. Unity only occurs to the degree that truth is acknowledged.
      Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

    • @cheekymoses
      @cheekymoses 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But surely that scripture doesn't speak of a divided Church, especially over race and politics. Divided or separated from the world? Yes. A divided Church? No.
      Christ also said blessed are peacemakers for they are children of God. My bottom line: Christ is all that matters and we must get rid of anything that divides us. He is a God of love and peace. By this everyone will know we are His disciples when we love one another. There cannot be division spurred on by hate in the Body of Christ... I can't get with that. I believe division is the devil's tactic. As long as we stay busy fighting each other, we will never get around to spreading the good news of Christ.
      I am saying that as believers, whatever is thrown at us, let the love of Christ be our response. There is nothing more powerful.
      I say this to you and me both. In this toxic culture, I NEED the reminder. My big takeaway from the episode was to avoid slander at all costs.

I particularly like how Part 1 came first because I fear that explaining the definition alone may be used to as a mechanism to silence or minimize between believers, seen as "ammunition" for a prepared back and forth debate - when we are called to speak truth, in love.

    I say this bcus as far as I can see it, both sides have become like the world in that they do not want a discussion. They want to call each other names and form factions. The "Red" / "Blue" divide is now in the church.

    Rasool's complaint that the church, when faced with ethical concerns, responds with epistemological critique comes because the church's response doesn't acknowledge that the issue is real and offer biblical solutions. Instead, we get arguments.
    There's a significant difference to the aggrieved party between hearing that Black citizens are experiencing disparate outcomes in interactions with the police because of widespread racism, affirming, empathizing, then offering a Biblical solution, and hearing that same concern and critiquing it for it's ties to critical race theory.

If you're arguing that racism exist, but "jumping to the conclusion that disparate outcomes are DEFINITELY the result of racism is, at best, naive, or, at worst, intellectually lazy." then we don't agree; you're arguing with me and not acknowledging the problem that I've raised as valid.

      @Samuel E. Fubara So when you read a study that concludes that Black male criminals face longer sentences than similarly situated white male offenders "after controlling for a wide variety of sentencing factors", how do you hold to the belief that racism doesn't cause desperate outcomes?

      That said, it's not the only example worth mentioning, just the most straight forward that I could come up with. You don't want to talk about criminals, ok. We could talk about how housing discrimination has caused desperate outcomes in wealth building opportunities; employment discrimination often faced by individuals with Black names; or increased maternal mortality rates in Black women. The issues are simply more complicated.
      There's a lot of Christians who aren't economists, statisticians, or sociologists (or whatever type of education is relevant in any given situation) who find problems with these studies. They haven't read the studies. They haven't read the methodology in the appendix. They just listen to guys like Pastor John saying that all critical theory is unbiblical and dismiss scientific evidence out of hand.

    That which is at the center table of any and all dialogues is a vast number of perspectives (world views).
    However, we as Christians are unique in that we view God along with His perspectives (His word) as having full and final authority in and over our lives. Beginning first in our minds thoughts (Rom 12:2), and filters it’s way through our hearts and experiences as we mature in relating with God (Heb 15:4)
    The fruit that results from our relationship with God will hopefully reflect God’s reality as we learn to trust and believe the supremacy of His Providence over all creation, thus, seamlessly making God (in the words of Piper) our greatest treasure (Deut 6:5).
    Reflecting God’s glory in a world that is both helpless and hopeless is huge in our relating with one another (John 13:34-35).

      @ikasdjfh Speaking up against racism as a Christian does not mean that one is espousing critical race theory. It means that one is living by the precepts of the Bible. The word of God makes it very clear that our God hates injustice and oppression and that we as Christians are to speak out against such things (Prov. 31:8,9). In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free. You are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:28). If the church is falling short of God's standard of us all being one in Christ then we have an obligation to speak out about it in love, without anyone being accused of espousing critical race theory. At the end of the day we are going to answer to God for our treatment of others. Straw manning in the name of CRT in order to silence criticisms about racism in church will not work with our Lord Jesus. Shalom.

      Piper is trying to make a pastoral response, which requires a part 1. He has no problem going straight to calling out CRT and its adherents, but the very foundation we use to have discourse is already faulty. That foundation is the deeper relational issue of people refusing discern a true adherent to a false teaching from someone who just trying to think critically. In other words, we live in a time when trying to grapple with racial issues honestly will make you branded as something sinister from well-meaning people, just for raising a question or a concern. Someone can simply say they don't support BLM and be branded a racist. Also, someone can simply say that race is a big issue and be branded as possessed by CRT.
      That seems to me why he wanted to explore the issues of labeling and slander first, so that when we get his answer in Part 2 on CRT more specifically, we have gained a perspective that allows us to engage people in a more thoughtful and Christlike way, and not like the world.

    With all due respect Pastor John, is it really slander to call an Arian an Arian or a Gnostic a Gnostic, even if the holder of the views espoused is unaware of where they originate? Is it not also possibly slanderous, then, to accuse those believers who accurately use the term "Critical Race Theory" in calling out un-biblical ideas as being slanderous for using the term? Would you accuse St. Athenasius of slander for calling out Arianism or St. Iraneus for calling out the Gnostics? I'm sorry, but I believe that suggesting that the labeling of CRT is slanderous because it makes assumptions about the motives of the speaker. If Pastor Berry is bothered that he has been labeled a critical race theorist, why is he upset by the label, rather than addressing the heretical nature of the ideas that draw the label? No one is saying that the issues of race are unimportant, but, perhaps, just maybe, espousing ideas that are themselves racist will not solve or address the racial issues at hand.
    Oh, and don't call it CRT? Should I not call Gnosticism Gnosticism? Should I not call Arianism Arianism or Palagianism Palagianism? If you are espousing heretical ideas, should I not tell you that you are espousing those ideas and where they come from? I should come to you privately where possible, but also, if you freely espouse heresy in public, you leave yourself open to a public rebuke, do you not? Did not Paul publically rebuke Cephas (Peter) for his public failure for not walking in step with the truth of the Gospel?
    'But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”' - Galatians 2:14

    CRT recognizes that racism is engrained in the fabric and system of the American society. The individual racist need not exist to note that institutional racism is pervasive in the dominant culture. This is the analytical lens that CRT uses in examining existing power structures. CRT identifies that these power structures are based on white privilege and white supremacy, which perpetuates the marginalization of people of color.
    Legal scholar Roy L. Brooks has defined CRT as "a collection of critical stances against the existing legal order from a race-based point of view", adding that:[10]
    [I]t focuses on the various ways in which the received tradition in law adversely affects people of color not as individuals but as a group. Thus, CRT attempts to analyze law and legal traditions through the history, contemporary experiences, and racial sensibilities of racial minorities in this country. The question always lurking in the background of CRT is this: What would the legal landscape look like today if people of color were the decision-makers?
    So let's break this down. Has racism made its way through the fabric of society? Absolutely. First point, check. Are there laws that give certain people of color less rights than whites? No. But the application of the law through adjudicators have shown to punish people of color more harshly than whites.
    But they'll never admit that. I saw a pretty racist post on Facebook and looked at the guy's profile. His tag line showed the perfect response to anyone who is pro-White America and anti-POC. "Admit to nothing. Deny everything. Counter accuse when you can."
    How does this attitude fit the Bible? It doesn't.

      Examples of 'engrained' racism abound in the Old and New Testaments.
      The Israelites were slaves in Egypt, of course. They were also oppressed and discriminated against by Nebuchadnezzar and Darius in Babylon.
      Because they were a different people.
      The Israelites themselves oppressed and discriminated against the Philistines and Canaanites and the other tribes sharing their lands in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament they did the same with the Samaritans, Gentiles, and other surrounding peoples who were not like them.
      Also, there is the Roman Empire, which had its own means of oppression and racism.

CRT is the racist, divisive ideology here, not the “pejorative” label of Critical Race Theory. Please do some more homework, John, with a special focus on Marxism and communism. Also, how is pointing out that someone is looking at life through a Marxist lens “slander”?? Aren’t we called to tell our brothers and sisters the truth, in love? Most of what I hear and see is a similar question with the "MAY" excluded, which proves that the question itself is founded on an assumption that racial disparity DOES in fact exist in Health Care, Education or anything else. I have yet to see enough compelling evidence that this would be the case, and someone who assumes this is the case must assume this under the unbiblical, "everyone is racist until proven innocent (possibly)", worldview of CRT. That's why I don't think it's slander to label someone's worldview as CRT based, when their questions are obviously founded on these assumptions. Through their questions, they prove their own guilt.
