Hi Tim, nice to hear from you again. Thanks for your support and for taking the time to write. How's Andrea? Has her condition improved? Paula and I are looking forward to seeing you both very soon. (Damn covid)
I have same question. Have you ever ground anything for real ?? I'm tool and die maker with over 40 years of experience . When I dress the will I never ever stop spindle . There is lot of experts on youtube but there is very few really experts.
@@georgezardecki2545 33 years as tool and die maker here. Most youtube grinding videos are terrible. I have thought about making some tutorials but free time is rare anymore.
Great video.... Smashing chap teaching folk on here some very valuable information on surface grinding. There's so much to learn with how to grind different materials, wheel selection, and a huge variety of attachments and various fixtures. Jones and Shipman 540 surface grinders are the best .
Bonjour, I admire the way you come back to explain your techniques . I am a fan of your art. I spent my prime time around 7 years from college and afterwards in Montreal , what a great place. Watching your videos from great land of Australia now.
I have been wanting to get a used surface grinder for my garage shop for a long time now. The video was very informative and I look forward to part two.
Also, great video! very informative. I've just bought a small 612 manual surface grinder and am learning as much as possible while I finish prepping/installing the thing (cleaning, new fluids, 3-phase power accomodation, Fix/replace DRO etc..). This helps a lot with the basics. I really like your description of the various tool profiles and the chips they produce when the DOC gets small. Initial process is a bit like woodworking where we use a jointer to make the reference surface then the planer guarantees thickness.
Marc is there a way when dressing the surfacing wheel with the diamond to prevent it from knock chips out of the outside and inside surface of the surfacing wheel. I noticed sometimes it will knock quite large chunks off the outside and inside of the surfacing wheel. If you slightly chamfer the outside edges it will cut down the actual width of your surfacing wheel.
Looking forward to the next video. I bought a surface grinder last year and will be moving it soon and getting it running. While i did use one years ago, i have forgotten so much.
Would you believe i got a job grinding tools and one of 3 machines is a small light weight surface grinder. Watching utube i learned alot and only had 1slight accidents cause i for got to tighten the index spindle. Like you say light removal is only way to accurately re move material safely. Tomorrow morning i was asked to see if i can remove. 008 from a spacer used in a spindle just being rebuilt.Since the magnetic table is around 6" there will be over lap of the part im grinding and at 30 degrees will be a challenge depending on the y travel in relation to the spindle or grinding wheel. I haven't seen the part yet but i may have to rearrange the complete magnetic chuck @30"
you should make a video on " what do you need to watch or pay attention when you buy an used surface grinding" I saw some, but wasn't sur what to look and test before buying it
Zipper tooling must be difficult. Lots of carbide and some visual grinding i assume. There was a shop in Indianapolis called Gentry tool that made zipper tooling. Before i started working but 2 of my former employers worked there and a few other local shop owners worked there.
I noticed at the 6 min mark you only fed the table in one direction and then returned it back to where you started. Do you only grind in one direction?
Once you have a side ground, you can tap it down lightly on the mag chuck with a softer metal tapper. You do this after the magnet is on. This is really paranoia speaking, but it makes sure the part is down. I agree with the two thousandths maximum for manual grinders like that. Any more and it’s super easy to get burn marks.
Marc, the problem with videos like this is that now I'll have to go get a surface grinder. ;) I've watched grinders being used in industry, but have never operated one myself. When I eventually get a surface grinder in my home shop, I'll certainly be reviewing this video series!
@@greg0uk I agree...we have both wet and dry grinders at work, small parts done on the dry grinders and large parts on the wet grinders, everything comes out just fine!
Why don't you just use vinegar to remove heat scale? It takes some time but it works wonders on raw steel. It seems like it would take a long time to remove the scale. [I'm a noob so I dont' now how thick that scale is, though]
Have you ever ground anything for real ?? Lmao

This was the first video on grinding I ever watched. I finally bought one and I'm so stoked! Thanks for lighting that fire!

Probably the best videos on TH-cam. Learned a lot. Huge thanks.

I love the surface grinders man! I took a big liking to them while in technical school 3 years ago.
Another great explanation
Thanks for posting Marc!

Thanks again Marc you’re all ways so explained and I learned a lot
I can't wait to see the next one. This required multiple watches in sections for me to get some idea on what is going on.
Great video. Thanks for making it! I like your presentation style. Information dense and no fluff.
Thank you, Marc for your great way of disseminating information

Hello Love Your video ! why not but a .~.005 piece of paper on the part and bring the wheel till it just touches the paper ?
Wbich grits are your burnishing and lapping plates?
How would you secure non-ferrous material to your table, or if it didn't have a magnet?
This man is a genius
That's what I have been telling my wife and kids but for many reasons, they don't believe me. Thanks for watching and for your support, Marc.

Please let us know how to open jammed surface grinding wheel and it will open in clocked Wise or anticlockwise
Very instructive! Thanks

Can select same Rpm for both grinder and grinding disc is it safe
Thank you Marc for the video! I like the background information that you give; it makes a big difference.
Funny thing happend we got a 10 foot bed surface grinder at work and im spose to figure it out. Itss goin just fine. Just fine. Anyone have advice?
Can a norton wheel grinder be used to grind a engine head?
I noticed at the 6 min mark you only fed the table in one direction and then returned it back to where you started. Do you only grind in one direction?
Very useful. Thanks.
Is it just me or did you feed your part into the wheel on your backstroke a few times? Also a nono?
Nice
Dear Marc, thank you very much
Lesson: 50
Thank you
Seems tile that’ll get exhausting for your arms , no ?

If you turn the machine off you have to true the wheel again when you turn it back on,no?
Just got a brown and sharp 618 ,580.$ at an auction
I bought one for $1 on auction
Works too
