    I saw 2 of them at Watkins Glen Can AM many moons ago. Donahue mashed 1 in the wall during qualification. Rolled 2nd one off trailer and won race decisively. I was a young teen with eyes wide open during bog antics for the weekend. Memories....

    I saw a 917 at the 24 hours of Daytona about 20 years ago. That one had twin turbos on a flat 12 cyl engine. The one spec on that one that kinda blew my mind was the zero to 60 in 1.6s.

    I saw the original 917-30 race at Laguna Seca back in 73, truly an awesome site..

    What a beast! Used to attend the Can Am each year at Road America. Made the earlier 917s and McLarens seem....inadequate. Can't imagine trying to put all that power down off a slow corner.

    I got to see it at Laguna Seca maybe 20 years ago. It actually stoped in the middle of the race and waited for the big block Chevy cars to catch up some.

      The car is too fast in Can-AM that let the organizer establish fuel usage restrictions to suppress the advantages of this car but they did not expect that this move would affect other manufacturers and lead to large-scale withdrawals makes the race unsustainable so this car nicknamed "Can-AM killer" in pun.

      @Marc Stephan - That's called "toying with the competition." Ken Miles loved to do that racing his Cobra against Corvettes. He'd pull into the pits and ask for a coke or glass of water, then get back on the track and mess with them all over again. Those truly were unique and fun times in road racing!

    As sister 917s appearance proves somewhat deceiving about her actual size, would this Spyder be significantly stronger built than the debut 908/3 Targa Florio with only a third of the V12s output? Thanks for the upload anyway.

    La Porsche 917/30 sponsorizzata Sunoco : la macchina col 12 cilindri ereditato dalla 917 e col turbocompressore, che stravinse nella Can-Am , e batte' le Mc Laren con Mark Donoue e George Folmer .....

    1500 PS / HP
    Not 1000 !

    • @hokamto7754
      @hokamto7754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1500 is only in activate extra turbo boost. It is not a long lasting mode or the piston will be melted because of heat so in max horsepower is 1000 in common.

      I believe 1500+ hp was qualification tune.

    • @god.mp4
      @god.mp4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well the title does say 1000+, but also the 1500/1600 is likely the qualification figure, during races the power is lowered to increase durability and reliability

      1500hp max in qualification

    Proof positive that, given unlimited funds, unlimited facilities and unlimited engineering you can go faster than cars which were designed in the back shop. And this proved exactly what? That a WW2 fighter plane could defeat a WW1 plane? Hollow victory.

      Bruce was a driver and had a team of pretty good engineers working for him, as well as mechanics and fabricators. McLaren had a pretty large operation with both F1 and CanAm cars. Obviously not as big as Porsche Audi, but a bit more than a garage.

      @Coldlake Alta - Come on man, use your head! That's how progress and improvements are fostered, by being the best you can and forcing others to get creative. This incredible car beat everything on the track during its time, it wasn't racing against old, obsolete machines. It was up against the best of the best and due to its total dominance, made those cars obsolete just the same! By the way, are you aware that American Mark Donohue, with a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Brown University, was enlisted by Porsche to help create the 917?
