What about a Pokémon that references the old ghost story “La Llorona”? Perhaps, Mahzan parents tell the story of this Pokémon to frighten young children, in hopes that they behave better. For if they don’t, the Pokémon will come and take them to the spirit world 😈. To tone it down a little bit tho, Jack, maybe the Pokémon is actually given QUITE the bad rep, and in reality, plays with the children?
A Hummingbird Pokemon would be very fitting for this region. They are only found in the Americas, and they already have a Fairy-like quality, so could be geared towards that typing.
I think I recall a very interesting thing I came across. There's an old Aztec god of the Sun, War, and human sacrifice called Huitzilopochtli, which means "the hummingbird's south", and it was believed that warriors would be reborn as hummingbirds upon death. Considering how aggressive hummingbirds can be (some even have serrated beaks more specialized for combat), that would be... interesting.

uhh, archetypes that haven't been covered yet: - early game fish - rock type for tunnels - "pikachu clone" - pseudo-legendary dragon - human-made artifact(modern, or ancient?) central american tropes that could have potential - a pyramid - those big stone faces the olmec built - that aztec sport where they hit the ball into a hoop with only their hips - soccer, maybe? - some sort of kid-friendly reference to communist revolutions, or foreign influence on the government? - something inspired by colonialism? maybe catholicism, conquistadors or even banana republics? - something to do with the panama canal? - something to do with tenochtitlan/mexico city being an extremely well organized city with beautiful canals, far better than anything europeans had? - el dorado?
El Dorado would be great for a town in the region with a gym specializing in Electric or Fire types. I also think it would be neat if the city names were in Spanish or had Spanish inspirations.
Yeah but it needs to be cooler like Barraskewda There's a fish native to Mexico called the Firemouth cichlid.. they could make it a water/fire type. A fish that shoots out flames too

"When defeated, its ally gains HP equal to this Pokemon's last HP" seems like a decent variation of Party Popper, but depends on Mudsmache's HP how viable it is. Given how tanky it looks, it could still be broken.
I also love the Rehydration ability for Maractus. I would definitely like that ability to work in reverse, like if it gets hit by or uses a fire type move while its grass type it'd turn back into a fire type because it got "dried out."
Imagine walking into a daycare and seeing your Mudbray hanging from the ceiling and the daycare lady blindfolded with a baseball bat whacking it for Full Restores. Also, Mudsmache should evolve while leveling up in trainer battles while holding a Light Clay.
Please, please, please! Do the desperately needed Día de Muertos Fire/Grass version of the Pumpkaboo line! This can be the region the line originated from, and the ghost/grass we get in the other regions only became such due to dying on the ships of colonizers as they did not know how to care for them.
Ok, another ideas for pokemon could be: -A llorona like pokemon -New eeveelution (the types I think could fit for this region are rock,bug and ghost) -Pejelagarto (water/steel, because the scales of this fishes is very strong) -Cactus saguaro -Amber. It could be for a fossil pokemon (México have good amber) -A rattlesnake or an eagle for the pseudolegendary of the region - Jaguar for the legendary
Lets be honest, Maractus needs a regional variant or an evolution. Also a ghost type day of the day Pokemon, and a normal electric type type pikachu clone based on a harvest mouse. You also asked for a poison type idea, so how about a type of bird or lizard

I’d bet on mudbray and mudsdale because I can easily see the muddy hooves, hair and tail converting into paper strips very nicely also mudsbray is a donkey and the party game pin the tail on the donkey exists and can be the secondary inspiration
What if Mazian Mudbray evolves when it levels up holding a special item. It could be like a Blindfold item that lowers accuracy and increases attack on any Pokémon, but having Mudbray hold it when it levels up makes it evolve. Or maybe it evolves after several Rare Candies have been used on it, like filling up a Piñata almost. Idk, it sounds unique and has never actually been done before so it could be a cool way to evolve a regional variant.
It would be super sweet if it had like a type change ability where in the rain it becomes a grass type only, in the sun it is a fire type only, and in other weather it is grass and fire- this way it could get bonuses to STAB fire moves while also giving it resistances to water boosted attacks, and it would always have both types of moves to attack with so you'd have a lot of build flexibility. And the coolest part would be counterplayung your opponents team with a grass OR a fire type whenever you needed it to be something specific.

You still need a electric rodent pokemon. Every generation has one, (or two if your Hoenn). Also it doesn't have to pure electric. Gen 7 and Gen 8's have been duel typing. Electric/steel and electric/dark. Maybe you can do a kangaroo rat that is electric/ground. That would be an interesting concept
How about a Ghost type based off of The Day of the Dead? It can have 2 forms: Its Good Soul form, which adds the fairy type, and the Wicked Soul form, which adds the dark type. I think this would be pretty cool. Cant wait to see more Mazah pokemon.

Pls take this in consideration I've thought about an opossum 2 stage evolution line; you should also take inspiration from an old native american legend about them, which explain why they are hairless in the tail. Since in this legend the opossum kills a wolf and uses his teeth as necklace, you should include this in the design. Always talking about the design of the opossum pokemon, it paints his face of different colours to make fun of the wolves came to avenge their friend, which would include different designs/forms for the line (like spinda (was this his name?) that has different forms with scattered spots in different parts of his body). About the typing, I thought about a unique one: ghost-normal. They in fact, when in danger, fake their death and it seems good enough to me to establish this new and amazing typing and maybe also some kind of related signature move. Moreover, it would be great to add an unused typing, the ground-fairy, with a "pink fairy armadillo" (it's literally the name of the species), which would be perfect to represent it. In the end, What about adding an Hamming Bird to the Pokédex? I fill it would fit kinda well in this Mexican Region, since Hamming Bird are present all over the real life region. Ghost type pokemon ideas: Pokemon based off of La llorona Pokemon based off of the day of the dead I also feel like there should be a bronze coloured griffin-esque pokemon, as seen in the flag of mexico.
If that happens Gamefreak might as well give Meowth a voice actor for the games since it's the third mascot of Pokemon. Yet a new regional Pikachu with a split evolution would be great. Or just give Pikachu a new Evolution or a new regional Raichu variant.

This is going to be a lot of suggestions 1.A gargoyle Pokémon based on all of the catholic church’s maybe a stained glass aesthetic, 2.regional variant for viloplume highlighting agave , 3.squid Pokémon since Baja is famous for the vampire squid water/dark type 4.Day of the dead “food Pokémon” skeleton cookies 5.A grass lizard Pokémon with a corn motif “You can eat the fruit from its back” somewhere in its motifs 6.Lastly the legendary’s I think they could represent the concept of civilization vs nature and the fight between them with ancient civilization being the center piece. It make sense with the starters as well, the Pokémon of civilation legendary gave us the fire started to give us fire to build and cook and delight us with Dance that the humans copied. The nature Pokémon gave use the grass starter to explore and indulge in the nature. Finally the final legendary gave us music which was found in the nature and in civilization so the nature wouldn’t claim another civilization ( the ancient civilization. Boom mind blown 🤯 I’m out
I think an easy fix to Mudbray's ability would be if it were to work like the move "Wish". When Mudbray faints the next Pokemon that gets sent out to the battlefield gets its status healed and their HP restored. It's still an awesome ability, since a full restore is always appreciated but limits its use since the player would have to play around the matchup with whatever Pokemon fainted Mudbray and make sure Mudbray is not the last Pokemon on their party for the ability to come into play.
I kind of thought the point of regional variants was to get Pokemon that wouldn’t normally fit in the region make more sense.. maractus and mudbray already would go perfectly in a Mexican region, so I would’ve hoped for something a little more creative but with that said I already love the look of these new variants. Maybe in the future you could go a little more crazy with Pokemon choice for variants if you choose to make more
Not really. Things like Sandshrew, Exeggutor and Wheezing would fit fine with their regions. I see it more as to make them thematically fit better, as well as putting a new spin on old, sometimes underused Pokémon.
Ben Weston you’re right, I may have been pushing my own bias a bit, and I see the benefit of changing these Pokemon. However, I still feel as though the choices of mudbray and maractus were too easy, and it would be interesting to see Pokemon that wouldn’t originally fit in the zone thematically gain some more attention, so I’m only hoping Jack makes more variants with a little more out-of-the-box thinking in the future
I think the easiest way to tweak mudbray’s ability is to make it somewhat like pick up, where it is a random assortment of items that can be dropped, instead of always being a full restore.
As much as I like these designs remember that pokemon usualy don'tt go so deep into region that they are inspired by - design wise. Most of them are made so they would not look odd in different regios. Several of your ideas are very deep into Mexican estetics making them hard to incorporate somewhere else.
If you're planning on creating more regional variants, I suggest theming them after Mexico's climate, areas, or other parts of their environment (like Alolan Exeggutor or Galarian Corsola). I still really love the pinata Mudbray-Mudsdale and the jalepino Maractus, which are based more on culture (like Galarian Rapidash or Alolan Raichu). I hope the Pokedex is sizable as well. To make Mudbray's ability not-so-OP, you could have it heal all status conditions on their team, heal 1/4 on a random member or the one to switch in, or have it do both but with a smaller percentage like 1/8.
Mudsmache looks like a conquistador Pokémon, maybe when it was originallly brought over it became a Pokémon for war. This could play into the major story as the people fight against the evil conquistadors and the natives of the region
I think a cool Pokémon could be made out of a set of melting candles (I’m thinking somewhere between the litwick evolution line and ralts evolution line) though this concept would also work as another diglet / digtrio type variant Candles are often used in traditional Mexican festivities so I think it would really work here!
While I really enjoy the designs in this, I feel like Maractus, while it is a regional variant, looks too little like the original Pokémon to seem like a variant. It seems more like a new but similar Pokémon to me.
Cool new bug type idea, and maybe another typing. A pokemon based off the Orchid Praying Mantis but instead its based off a catcus flower? Maybe it holds a Cactus flower? or maybe a different pokemon idea is a grass pokemon based off the cactus flower?
That mudsbray is adorable! I for one can't wait until they introduce a regional variant that starts off as a differently named original species but it's clearly based off of an existing theme.
There is a cool ability for a piñata Pokémon that I read some time ago: Every time it received a physical attack a berry will come out of its belly, the berry varies with it's nature and its body pattern.
The mudbrays ability should have been that it returns it's held item back into the bag when it's knocked out. Or just drop a random healing item. The better the rarer.

Maractus should be Fire/Grass!! A unique type combination! Edit: It would be a very balanced type combination as well, having only 3 defensive weaknessess (Flying , Poison and Rock) and 4 defensive strengths (Steel ,Electric, Fairy and Grass x 0.25) and offensively being very effective to Ground , Rock, Bug, Steel, Water, Grass and Ice, and weak to only Fire and Dragon. By the way I absolutely love all of these designs

For Mudbray's ability I would say something like "Knock Swing: raises the bearer's evasiveness by one stage when it is attacked by any move", similar to Alolan Mudbray's Stamina. Perhaps hidden ability?
Maybe a *popcorn* Pokémon? From my light research I found out that popcorn originated in Mexico so that's pretty cool fact that could inspire a Pokémon. Maybe it starts as a Kernal grass-normal but has a split evolution based on the two main types of popcorn the "butterfly" shaped and the "mushroom" shaped? Or if you want a regional form you could use the Jigglypuff line since they are all about expanding and that's how popcorn works with hot steam expanding a kernal.

@You’re Average Twice Fan there are great examples of mexican based Pokemons like the fire starter or the chupacabras, those take elements of the culture without falling into stereotypes that are offensive, also it is not a mariachi since it has nothing to do with music and the colors don't match a mariachi outfit (and the fact that it has "cactus" in the name but it isn't a cactus makes it even worse)

The pseudo legendary for Mazah could be based off the Axolotl, as there are several myths surrounding them and their supposed immortality. It could be Water/Dragon, but Water/Ghost could also work
I recommend you to change laguna's name, because it literally means pond in spanish. This could be easily fixed by transforming it's name to "Lepuna" or "Haruna", between many other name options.
An idea for another regional variant could be a Bergmite and Avalugg variation. Instead of the normal ice typing and icey design, the variants are based on rocks/ground. Bergmite is based on an icicle and could easily be a rock or stalagmite. Avalugg is the iceberg pokemon, however, what Mexico lacks in icebergs it makes up for it with plateaus, which would fit in with Avalugg's flat and cracked appearance.
I just found this channel due to the Bathygigas art I found online and cannot stress how absolutely amazing all of the art on this channel is. The character designs are phenomenal and the Pokémon are just simply too good to exist
My perfect idea of a regional variant is a regional Eevee. The regional Eevee would still be normal type while looking different, but can't access any of the original Eevee's evolutions. Rather, it has evolutions for every type our current Eevee doesn't have access to. Of course, the original Eevee would still exist, but each version would exist in different parts of the region, like how Shellos has different forms in the east and west.
Trying to imagine Mudsmache's animation considering it's inflexible is hilarous because it's either waddeling around, sliding like Minecraft, or throwing up it's back legs up while the front gallop forward.
What I’d love to see is a metal type Pokémon that’s like a horse from the conquistadors where it at first is a small pony who is clumsy and can barely stay in its armor; to a majestic war stallion that leads charge and a sense of a deltic presence
Two more things every good region needs are a cute Electric type rodent and a a mythical "New Mew"! I imagine there are plenty of cool things you could do with a Mahza style for them.
Could be interesting to do another take on the Axolotl. I think the mudkip line is based off of them, but one that shows off the fully aquatic, or perhaps endangered status of the axolotl could be quite interesting.
Maybe the region's grass types can be focused on next? I was thinking of basing one off of the Mexican Marigold combining the plant with Santa Muerte/La Catrina? It could be a 3 stage mon (each one inspired by the meaning of each day of the 3 day holiday) that takes ideas from Roserade and Florges maybe? But if the end stage evo is based off of La Catrina, it would have to be Grass/Ghost type.
You could say: Mudsbray must get hit by an ally in a double battle to evolve! Building on the party narrative, a double battle could be seen as a party because of the multitude of pokémon present. Furthermore, while it is possible to hit an ally with an attack, many casual players avoid doing this, so it becomes an underused mechanic (although it is sort of exciting when you first realize it is an option.)
As a game designer, I think Marahn Mudbray's ability is cool. The only balancing tweeks I would probubly do is to have the health restoration shared with all of the pokemon that don't have full HP. Not choose at random. The total amount of health that will be restored is equal to Mudbray's max HP (or twice as much, depends on testing). If for example, Mudbray's max HP is 100, then 100 HP will be shared with the rest of the pokemon that need restoration which means 20 HP each if all pokemon need restoration. 25 HP if 4 pokemon need, 50 HP if 2, you get the idea. One of the reasons is that it's the "fiesta" pokemon. It's not fun to party alone, you need friends to share the happiness. About evolving it. There are limitation that need to be take into account: not everyone have an online membership and you can't get experiance in online battles anyways. The evolution method should be possible in single player. There are also some people don't like to play multiplayer. Another limitation is how many trainer battles there are in the game. One who completed the game can battle other trainers pretty much only by challenging the elite 4 and the champion again which all have high levels. Beside having the method available in single player, it also must be possible with a wild enounter as it's available all the time and in all levels. To keep the fiesta theme and the friendship, I think the evolution method should have Mudbray either hitting or knocking out a pokemon that was also hit by another pokemon in your party. We party together after all. Why not share this knockout with other pokemon friends? The opposing pokemon must be hit by two different pokemon: Mudbray and another pokemon (can also be another Mudbray to evolve two at once), otherwise it can't evolve. Another possibility is just a good old trade evolution, it's another form of sharing a party.
Maybe a modification to the "friendship" mechanic could work for your region. Kinda like making curries, giving food and playing games at rest areas. The "bond" mechanic will give little bonuses to the Pokémon; such as a small exp bonus for the next fight, a minor increase on stats or even unlocking evolutions for Pokémon. And when a certain number of Pokémon are closely bonded with you and in the same party and resting the group will perform for the trainer; like a band or dance or mock combat and this will give the whole party a minor boost.
How about a Fighting/Ghost type regional variant of Falinks based on a mariachi band? Instead of fighting directly they play spooky music to frighten off predators. Maybe add some lore about how they guide the spirits of the dead towards they're living relatives.
That pinata ability gets more gruesome when you think about it. I remember hearing that horses were killed for their glue, and maybe full restores are farmed from rapidly killing-er knocking out... the pinata bois
For Mudbray’s ability. Make it so the effect only triggers, if it was hit by a contact move. This gives the opponent a way to play around it and the user can purposely predict a contact move and switch into it, so it goes down. Would make some fun mind games

I also love the Rehydration ability for Maractus. I would definitely like that ability to work in reverse, like if it gets hit by or uses a fire type move while its grass type it'd turn back into a fire type because it got "dried out."
Imagine walking into a daycare and seeing your Mudbray hanging from the ceiling and the daycare lady blindfolded with a baseball bat whacking it for Full Restores.
Also, Mudsmache should evolve while leveling up in trainer battles while holding a Light Clay.
Please, please, please! Do the desperately needed Día de Muertos Fire/Grass version of the Pumpkaboo line! This can be the region the line originated from, and the ghost/grass we get in the other regions only became such due to dying on the ships of colonizers as they did not know how to care for them.

Ok, another ideas for pokemon could be:
-A llorona like pokemon
-New eeveelution (the types I think could fit for this region are rock,bug and ghost)
-Pejelagarto (water/steel, because the scales of this fishes is very strong)
-Cactus saguaro
-Amber. It could be for a fossil pokemon (México have good amber)
-A rattlesnake or an eagle for the pseudolegendary of the region
- Jaguar for the legendary

What if Mazian Mudbray evolves when it levels up holding a special item. It could be like a Blindfold item that lowers accuracy and increases attack on any Pokémon, but having Mudbray hold it when it levels up makes it evolve. Or maybe it evolves after several Rare Candies have been used on it, like filling up a Piñata almost. Idk, it sounds unique and has never actually been done before so it could be a cool way to evolve a regional variant.

Maybe we need some kind of ground dark pokemon that scares locals in small towns, and where some myths are told about.
Why not a fire grass type maractus, that would be a lot cooler in my opinion.
It would be super sweet if it had like a type change ability where in the rain it becomes a grass type only, in the sun it is a fire type only, and in other weather it is grass and fire- this way it could get bonuses to STAB fire moves while also giving it resistances to water boosted attacks, and it would always have both types of moves to attack with so you'd have a lot of build flexibility. And the coolest part would be counterplayung your opponents team with a grass OR a fire type whenever you needed it to be something specific.

The Party Popper ability is actually balanced, as theres a Pokemon Move called Healing Wish that does the same thing!
You still need a electric rodent pokemon. Every generation has one, (or two if your Hoenn). Also it doesn't have to pure electric. Gen 7 and Gen 8's have been duel typing. Electric/steel and electric/dark. Maybe you can do a kangaroo rat that is electric/ground. That would be an interesting concept

How about a Ghost type based off of The Day of the Dead? It can have 2 forms: Its Good Soul form, which adds the fairy type, and the Wicked Soul form, which adds the dark type. I think this would be pretty cool. Cant wait to see more Mazah pokemon.

I've thought about an opossum 2 stage evolution line; you should also take inspiration from an old native american legend about them, which explain why they are hairless in the tail. Since in this legend the opossum kills a wolf and uses his teeth as necklace, you should include this in the design. Always talking about the design of the opossum pokemon, it paints his face of different colours to make fun of the wolves came to avenge their friend, which would include different designs/forms for the line (like spinda (was this his name?) that has different forms with scattered spots in different parts of his body). About the typing, I thought about a unique one: ghost-normal. They in fact, when in danger, fake their death and it seems good enough to me to establish this new and amazing typing and maybe also some kind of related signature move. Moreover, it would be great to add an unused typing, the ground-fairy, with a "pink fairy armadillo" (it's literally the name of the species), which would be perfect to represent it. In the end, What about adding an Hamming Bird to the Pokédex? I fill it would fit kinda well in this Mexican Region, since Hamming Bird are present all over the real life region.

I think they could represent the concept of civilization vs nature and the fight between them with ancient civilization being the center piece.
It make sense with the starters as well, the Pokémon of civilation legendary gave us the fire started to give us fire to build and cook and delight us with Dance that the humans copied. The nature Pokémon gave use the grass starter to explore and indulge in the nature. Finally the final legendary gave us music which was found in the nature and in civilization so the nature wouldn’t claim another civilization ( the ancient civilization.

Maybe mudbray evolves when eating a rare candy?
I think an easy fix to Mudbray's ability would be if it were to work like the move "Wish". When Mudbray faints the next Pokemon that gets sent out to the battlefield gets its status healed and their HP restored. It's still an awesome ability, since a full restore is always appreciated but limits its use since the player would have to play around the matchup with whatever Pokemon fainted Mudbray and make sure Mudbray is not the last Pokemon on their party for the ability to come into play.
What about a lightning, water type pokemon based on Chaac the mayan God of rain and storms?

I kind of thought the point of regional variants was to get Pokemon that wouldn’t normally fit in the region make more sense.. maractus and mudbray already would go perfectly in a Mexican region, so I would’ve hoped for something a little more creative but with that said I already love the look of these new variants. Maybe in the future you could go a little more crazy with Pokemon choice for variants if you choose to make more
Not really. Things like Sandshrew, Exeggutor and Wheezing would fit fine with their regions. I see it more as to make them thematically fit better, as well as putting a new spin on old, sometimes underused Pokémon.
Ben Weston you’re right, I may have been pushing my own bias a bit, and I see the benefit of changing these Pokemon. However, I still feel as though the choices of mudbray and maractus were too easy, and it would be interesting to see Pokemon that wouldn’t originally fit in the zone thematically gain some more attention, so I’m only hoping Jack makes more variants with a little more out-of-the-box thinking in the future
I think the easiest way to tweak mudbray’s ability is to make it somewhat like pick up, where it is a random assortment of items that can be dropped, instead of always being a full restore.
As much as I like these designs remember that pokemon usualy don'tt go so deep into region that they are inspired by - design wise. Most of them are made so they would not look odd in different regios. Several of your ideas are very deep into Mexican estetics making them hard to incorporate somewhere else.

If you're planning on creating more regional variants, I suggest theming them after Mexico's climate, areas, or other parts of their environment (like Alolan Exeggutor or Galarian Corsola). I still really love the pinata Mudbray-Mudsdale and the jalepino Maractus, which are based more on culture (like Galarian Rapidash or Alolan Raichu). I hope the Pokedex is sizable as well.
To make Mudbray's ability not-so-OP, you could have it heal all status conditions on their team, heal 1/4 on a random member or the one to switch in, or have it do both but with a smaller percentage like 1/8.

Mudsmache looks like a conquistador Pokémon, maybe when it was originallly brought over it became a Pokémon for war. This could play into the major story as the people fight against the evil conquistadors and the natives of the region

Candles are often used in traditional Mexican festivities so I think it would really work here!
Maractus seems more like a split evolutionary line than a new form. It really only shares the body and head shape and nothing else
While I really enjoy the designs in this, I feel like Maractus, while it is a regional variant, looks too little like the original Pokémon to seem like a variant. It seems more like a new but similar Pokémon to me.
Cool new bug type idea, and maybe another typing. A pokemon based off the Orchid Praying Mantis but instead its based off a catcus flower? Maybe it holds a Cactus flower? or maybe a different pokemon idea is a grass pokemon based off the cactus flower?
Love the designs! Only thing I’ll say is that I feel not making the mazian maractus the first grass/fire type is kinda a missed opportunity.
Maybe for Mudsmaché, it can only evolve when it wins a battle worth celebrating, like a Gym Battle or a Rival Battle.

Edit: It would be a very balanced type combination as well, having only 3 defensive weaknessess (Flying
, Poison and Rock) and 4 defensive strengths (Steel ,Electric, Fairy and Grass x 0.25) and offensively being very effective to Ground
, Rock, Bug, Steel, Water, Grass and Ice, and weak to only Fire and Dragon.

I loooooooved them! Except for Maractus' pepper moustache. It's weird haha. I like the pepper maracas arms tho. For Mudbray's ability I would say something like "Knock Swing: raises the bearer's evasiveness by one stage when it is attacked by any move", similar to Alolan Mudbray's Stamina. Perhaps hidden ability?

From my light research I found out that popcorn originated in Mexico so that's pretty cool fact that could inspire a Pokémon.
Maybe it starts as a Kernal grass-normal but has a split evolution based on the two main types of popcorn the "butterfly" shaped and the "mushroom" shaped?
Or if you want a regional form you could use the Jigglypuff line since they are all about expanding and that's how popcorn works with hot steam expanding a kernal.

@You’re Average Twice Fan there are great examples of mexican based Pokemons like the fire starter or the chupacabras, those take elements of the culture without falling into stereotypes that are offensive, also it is not a mariachi since it has nothing to do with music and the colors don't match a mariachi outfit (and the fact that it has "cactus" in the name but it isn't a cactus makes it even worse)

The pseudo legendary for Mazah could be based off the Axolotl, as there are several myths surrounding them and their supposed immortality. It could be Water/Dragon, but Water/Ghost could also work
I recommend you to change laguna's name, because it literally means pond in spanish. This could be easily fixed by transforming it's name to "Lepuna" or "Haruna", between many other name options.
An idea for another regional variant could be a Bergmite and Avalugg variation. Instead of the normal ice typing and icey design, the variants are based on rocks/ground. Bergmite is based on an icicle and could easily be a rock or stalagmite. Avalugg is the iceberg pokemon, however, what Mexico lacks in icebergs it makes up for it with plateaus, which would fit in with Avalugg's flat and cracked appearance.

My perfect idea of a regional variant is a regional Eevee. The regional Eevee would still be normal type while looking different, but can't access any of the original Eevee's evolutions. Rather, it has evolutions for every type our current Eevee doesn't have access to. Of course, the original Eevee would still exist, but each version would exist in different parts of the region, like how Shellos has different forms in the east and west.

What I’d love to see is a metal type Pokémon that’s like a horse from the conquistadors where it at first is a small pony who is clumsy and can barely stay in its armor; to a majestic war stallion that leads charge and a sense of a deltic presence
Two more things every good region needs are a cute Electric type rodent and a a mythical "New Mew"! I imagine there are plenty of cool things you could do with a Mahza style for them.
Could be interesting to do another take on the Axolotl. I think the mudkip line is based off of them, but one that shows off the fully aquatic, or perhaps endangered status of the axolotl could be quite interesting.
Maybe the region's grass types can be focused on next? I was thinking of basing one off of the Mexican Marigold combining the plant with Santa Muerte/La Catrina? It could be a 3 stage mon (each one inspired by the meaning of each day of the 3 day holiday) that takes ideas from Roserade and Florges maybe? But if the end stage evo is based off of La Catrina, it would have to be Grass/Ghost type.
That Mudbray ability is like healing wish and i love it.

You could say: Mudsbray must get hit by an ally in a double battle to evolve!
Building on the party narrative, a double battle could be seen as a party because of the multitude of pokémon present. Furthermore, while it is possible to hit an ally with an attack, many casual players avoid doing this, so it becomes an underused mechanic (although it is sort of exciting when you first realize it is an option.)
As a game designer, I think Marahn Mudbray's ability is cool. The only balancing tweeks I would probubly do is to have the health restoration shared with all of the pokemon that don't have full HP. Not choose at random. The total amount of health that will be restored is equal to Mudbray's max HP (or twice as much, depends on testing).
If for example, Mudbray's max HP is 100, then 100 HP will be shared with the rest of the pokemon that need restoration which means 20 HP each if all pokemon need restoration. 25 HP if 4 pokemon need, 50 HP if 2, you get the idea.
One of the reasons is that it's the "fiesta" pokemon. It's not fun to party alone, you need friends to share the happiness.
About evolving it. There are limitation that need to be take into account: not everyone have an online membership and you can't get experiance in online battles anyways. The evolution method should be possible in single player. There are also some people don't like to play multiplayer. Another limitation is how many trainer battles there are in the game. One who completed the game can battle other trainers pretty much only by challenging the elite 4 and the champion again which all have high levels. Beside having the method available in single player, it also must be possible with a wild enounter as it's available all the time and in all levels.
To keep the fiesta theme and the friendship, I think the evolution method should have Mudbray either hitting or knocking out a pokemon that was also hit by another pokemon in your party. We party together after all. Why not share this knockout with other pokemon friends? The opposing pokemon must be hit by two different pokemon: Mudbray and another pokemon (can also be another Mudbray to evolve two at once), otherwise it can't evolve.
Another possibility is just a good old trade evolution, it's another form of sharing a party.
Maybe a modification to the "friendship" mechanic could work for your region. Kinda like making curries, giving food and playing games at rest areas. The "bond" mechanic will give little bonuses to the Pokémon; such as a small exp bonus for the next fight, a minor increase on stats or even unlocking evolutions for Pokémon. And when a certain number of Pokémon are closely bonded with you and in the same party and resting the group will perform for the trainer; like a band or dance or mock combat and this will give the whole party a minor boost.
How about a Fighting/Ghost type regional variant of Falinks based on a mariachi band? Instead of fighting directly they play spooky music to frighten off predators. Maybe add some lore about how they guide the spirits of the dead towards they're living relatives.
That pinata ability gets more gruesome when you think about it. I remember hearing that horses were killed for their glue, and maybe full restores are farmed from rapidly killing-er knocking out... the pinata bois
For Mudbray’s ability. Make it so the effect only triggers, if it was hit by a contact move. This gives the opponent a way to play around it and the user can purposely predict a contact move and switch into it, so it goes down.
Would make some fun mind games
