I like to believe that as Yoronaqua gets close with their trainers they become very motherly and caring. I guess it just makes me less terrified of the scary they were based off 😅😅😅😅

In my country the story is more on the sad kind of vibe it goes that her children died of drowning and later she did too by trying to save them
And that when you are at home (specially in small towns and villages) if you hear a woman crying you should hide and close the windows and doors
For she will try to take you away to replace her children
The reason why she cries is because she can’t stop grieving the death of her kids
It scared me a lot as a kid since I actually heard a woman crying (whose voice I could not recognize) multiple times when I was visiting towns as a kid
@Iker González Sánchez Yes, though I think every different variation of the story I've heard (as a Mexican) always mentions how La Llorona herself drowned her children.
i grew up in a part of america with a lot of different latino and hispanic families so nearly everyone had their own slightly different version of the La Llorna story (oddly my parents didn't know the story, maybe it's not big in cuba)
a version of the story that was strangely prevalent that i never really hear people talk about online was that her cries sounded more quiet and distant the closer she got to you, so if you could barely hear her it actually meant she was really right behind you

Really yeah I’ve always been told that she drowned them herself and that god told her she had to find her children so that her spirit would be allowed to go to the after life but he lied to her and her children were in heaven so now she wanders around trying to find children and if she takes you she will drown you btw she’s only after kids

In mexico there is a newish religion called Santa Muerte where they worship lady death. It has witchcraft and "cult" elements to it so i think it could be a cool idea for the evil team. You could also make a legendary Pokémon based off of Santa Muerte since there arnt that many feminine legendaries

You are correct with Cresselia however, which is a female pokemon. You might be talking about the designs, but I’m not sure. Sorry if I implied the wrong thing.

I know I’m a bit late but I was thinking of a really interesting idea to pair with the starters. Since the Gulf of Mexico is where scientist theorise is where the meteor that wiped the dinosaurs hit, they could all tie into that. The grass types came down on the meteor, the water types were able to survive deep underwater and the fire type acted as a god, restoring life. I know this idea is super late but I thought it would be really cool to tie in.

I can actually picture a cute episode with Lilorina given the idea of them fearing water. I can just picture it hiding in some bushes during a rainstorm and being found by a little boy or girl. Who ends up befriending them.
Now this can go two ways.
1. The more peaceful option where the town is afraid and think the boy/girl is cursed just for simply interacting with the pokemon (Unlikely but an option)
Or the more sadder one.
2. This is all just a past memory and Lilorina is reliving it's most treasured memories as it had aged with the boy/girl and sadly watched it die as an elderly individual. At night the towns folk hear it's crying and make up a horrible rumor as the years go by saying if you hear it and your outside to find a place to hide. Meanwhile this pokemon is just looking for a friend again and is tired of feeling all that emotional pain.
I don't know why this came into my head but it did. I regret nothing.
Lionfish have recently become an invasive species to the Gulf of Mexico, so maybe a very aggressive version of it for this region
a lionfish pokemon would be quite badass, I also always like the idea of a beta fighting fish pokemon
I love this idea! I would live to see it lean into the "lion" part and be semi-aquatic, like have four legs and be able to walk on land, but mostly hunt in water. So I guess like a lion/lionfish hybrid. Mostly I wanna see a mane like those spiky fins!

@Mr Fabulous I sort of feel like dark-type is what Pokémon would do for an agressive invasive species but, maybe yours would make more sense because this region already has a dark/water type. But then again, does it really matter? Gen 8 added two lines that start out psychic and become psychic/fairy

I have an idea for three connected pokemon families. A Steel/Dark type conquistador pokemon, a Rock type aztec warrior pokemon, and a Steel/Fairy El Dorado pokemon.
The El Dorado pokemon could be a golden snake that curls up in squared coils to resemble the step pyramids of South America, and it would look like the snake statues of old mesoamerican civilizations. It's a Steel type to symbolize how it's made of gold, and Fairy type to symbolize how it's an unobtainable myth.
It could be named Eldoboatl (El Dorado + Boa, referencing the extinct titanoboa, the biggest snake ever + Coatl, meaning snake in nahuatl)
The aztec pokemon would be Rock type, both to symbolize their obsidian weaponry, and to make them naturally weak to their natural Steel type predators. They try to protect the El Dorado pokemon from the conquistadors. They could be a two-stage evolution with the bigger evolution being a Rock/Steel type with lots golden jewelry, symbolizing the gold-covered Muisca tribe that inadverdently started the El Dorado myth.
They could be named Macuatec (Macuahuitl, the aztec obsidian sword + Aztec) and Teocuitl (Teocuitlatl, meaning gold in nahuatl + Macuahuitl)
The conquistador pokemon would be hunting for the El Dorado pokemon's golden scales, and brutally wrecking any aztecs getting in their way. They could be a two-stage evolution with the bigger evolution having ornate gold decorations on their armor, symbolizing all the El Dorado pokemon they have stolen scales from.
They could be named Conqueso (conquistador + peso, the spanish currency) and Eldortez (El Dorado + Cortez, the most famous conquistador)
As an added bonus, both Conqueso and Macuatec can only evolve when Eldoboatl is in their party, seeing as they both need its gold to evolve.

Honestly I'm not sure how offensive those pokemon could be for Mexican people, but hey, it's usually better to try and ask if it's alright than to just abandon the idea right out the gate out of fear, in my opinion.
Personally I really like the idea, but I'm white, so my opinion isn't the one you should be looking for.
Hope you put that creativity into something really cool!
For conqueso it might just be me but I see queso which is Spanish for cheese

I would love to see a Fairy/Dark type based on the Aztec goddess Itzpapalotl, she’s a war and death goddess, but the also has huge butterfly wings. Maybe she could even be the basis for a regional variant of a Butterfree.
That would be amazing! Maybe the butterfly wings could come from a monarch butterfly since they migrate to Mexico.
That explains that B Rank's origins.

What about a regional variant of a Houndoom line with a more positive Energy and Bones decorated like a sugar skull. Maybe A round of feathers instead of horns.
A houndoom variant I think works best in a Greek region. What if it was a Liepard.

For the fish Pokemon in the region it could be a Pokemon based on the parrotfish family. It could have the vivillon treatment where there is a collection of different patterned parrotfish, eg rainbow parrotfish, midnight parrotfish, stoplight parrotfish, Queen parrotfish etc. Or it could have different formes depending on the area of the sea but they all have their own types so the midnight parrotfish could be water dark, Queen parrotfish could be water Psychic etc.
I’d love to see what you could do with this idea
Maybe they have some involvement with other Pokémon and wildlife which live in and around coral reef and some formes could be hostile while others contribute to their eco-system.

I also heard that parrotfish use mucus bubbles to protect them from parasites, so it would be cool too see how this would be translated into a pokemon concept!

Maybe the Fish Pokemon could be based off of the Firemouth Cichlid? The Firemouth Cichlid is native to Central America (Mostly the Yucatan Peninsula). It would be awesome to see what you would do with a fire/water dual type Pokémon. I feel like this would be such a cool fit as the Gulf of Mexico and the west coast of Mexico also makes up part of the Ring of Fire and you could do a fish that lives in or near the heat vents (Mexico has many underwater volcanoes).
I kinda like how the lore sort of implies the parents lie about Yorranaqua. The first two forms like kids and hate adults, but the third form hates everyone? Nah that’s just the parents being salty.
These are AMAZING!!! Wouldn’t be surprised if they had Liquid Voice (sound moves become water) as a hidden ability or something as well

She's usually depicted in a wedding dress or wearing a pale dress, so I really wanted the Shinny version to be of pale colors, but other than that, the design is incredible.

I like the final designs a lot but for some reason I REALLY love the first sketch of the final evolution. Something about the hair looks sooo good.
I do have a type suggestion for the “Day of the dead” Pokémon you mentioned. How about Ghost/Fairy?

The Day of the dead Pokémon would make a great ghost/fairy type Pokémon
I have an idea for a plant Pokémon, and I don’t think anyone had suggested this yet. Here it is: a cilantro Pokémon, as it is an ingredient for salsa, which is very common to see in Mexico, maybe it could be a pure grass type in the first stage. The second stage will have two forms, one is a very hot salsa Pokémon which would be a fire grass type Pokémon, that is very spicy and can burn somebody’s peoples tongue in one lick. The o5her one is a cold salsa Pokémon, which would be an ice grass type, and could give frostbite to opponents. You would evolve it by getting it to level 27 in a hot or cold area. Names could be cilbinep, combination of cilantro, pepper, and bin for the first stage, and I have no ideas for a name for the final evo.

Best line you've done yet. I've questioned a few of your other design choices but you absolutely nailed every bit of this one.
I also think that the final form is a little too humanoid and it kind of loses the appearance of a water type. I really love the concept and color palette though throughout the line and love the first two forms. The arm seems awkwardly positioned in the final form and the bottom of the dress seems lacking. Overall though I like the line a lot.
As for the generic fish Pokemon, not sure what to base it on but please don't make it mono water there's already so many of those. A flying fish would be kind of cool and shake up the water/flying is always a bird or Gyarados because Gyarados isnt allowed to be dragon type stereotype.
My exact thoughts. The first two forms are perfect, the third one still needs a little work.
I think that, perhaps making the hair more curly like maybe representing swirling water would help.

I think make the head and eyes bigger so it less humanoid
Firstly, i would just like to say i have very much enjoyed all of your designs so far. In terms of this evolutionary chain i'm impressed with the creativity within the first and second, the tear drop neck tie from the first form is great and i love how the shoulders within the second are shaped like tear drops, you mix cute with spooky very well, one minor thing i would add here however, is that since clearly these shoulders are tear drops you add the shine the other tears have as the second form loses an element of wetness in my opinion.
I love how in the second form the colour pallet starts to incorporate darker tones and has a heavier balance of them, it foreshadows the more sinister, dark tone of the last evolution, both in theme and design. The last evolution as you would expect has a small amount of lighter tones and more heavily focuses on the darker, the implementation of grey helps this balance and i understand you likely used it for the dress as you needed more of a colour variety, since the dark hair now connects with the whole body you cant really use the same colours again in the body to avoid the overall design looking like it lacks variety in colour scheme.
I also understand that the use of grey in the hair is to symbolise how this is the 'mother' character as the hair has started to turn grey from the roots of the hair, however i'm not sure how much i like this as i think it makes the character looked older than it needs to, i feel an important element of this story is that the mother drowned herself while she was still in the prime of her life due to heartache while this representation looks more like a grandmother to me (and i'm not sure how to word this, but i guess it loses the, fertility? of a 'mother' Pokemon?)
I feel the biggest design element of the second evolve is the hair itself, more specifically the locks on the top that are meant to be floating, as if in water, i feel you captured this very well, however in the last form the hair loses this buoyancy. I like how the hair becomes more jagged and sharp, this makes sense and the symbolism of such fits with the more dangerous element of this creature, but i really feel it needs to have more height to it, with the hair at least in parts, floating away the Pokemon.
Additionally, the first two forms are very pleasing to me because they have strong symmetry, it would be nice to see a little more symmetry within the last form, specifically the hair. obviously this is a personal opinion and i understand you would want to keep the hair looking wild and unkempt, and i would agree but i feel there is a middle ground somewhere that is being missed.
I also feel bringing the hair a little away from the body will give you more freedom to focus on the skeleton element, give you much more room for interesting posture (something reflective of being drowned ideally) and perhaps by layering the hair with lighter colours on the inside, darkening as it goes out allow you to use more colour within the dress as well.
Honestly i have a lot to say about this last form, i feel it's not up to scratch with the quality i have come to expect from you, the face is very bland, doesn't add anything to the design and the blobby tears don't look nearly as good as the previous designs, it's also very on the nose. Ultimately, i don't want to come across overly harsh on this, i love the previous forms and there are parts of this one i really enjoy as well such as how the tears form a necklace and how the bottom of the dress resembles an upside-down tombstone, i cannot deny your talent and creativity.
(As a closing thought, since the first and last form feature a necklace piece, which i would expect to be the 'source' of its power, perhaps the second should also have something of the sort as well to complete the theme?)
Ofcourse as with anything this is all personal opinion and others will think this looks absolutely perfect, feel free to disagree with me on any point, i just thought i would through in my 2 cents.

in a TH-cam landscape with half a dozen high profile Pokémon fan regions rn, you stand out as the single best one, hands down
She is beautiful, very good design, maybe the hair could be floating around her like in water and not going down all the time, however it is perfect as it is. Also La llorona cries "my kids" or "where are my kids" in a long and slow way.
For a fish Pokémon, you could do a Mahi-Mahi, or a Marlin (Relative of the swordfish), or a Bonefish. Maybe mix the bonefish with either some day of the dead stuff or a Bake-Kujira (The skeletal ghost whale yokai that has somehow yet to be a Pokémon). Any of these could be cool though
But maybe the bonefish could also have patterns that match fish skeletons???
Bonefish are often hunted for sport but most people think they taste gross. This has created a whole new sport called Bonefishing, in which you catch as many of them as you can and then release them. Maybe you could make this a bit more dark for it. Maybe it’s final form could be all about *Revenge*
Of course you shouldn’t do this Pokémon just yet, two ghost/water types in a roe could be a bit weird

Axolotl! I don’t know that much about them personally, but they’re cute!
I believe they are called the mexican walking fish. They also suffer from neoteny so they don't go through metamorphosis like frogs do so they keep the gills and tails of tadpoles. I'd really like an Axolotl pokemon it could be a fairy water type maybe? Idk but a cute Axolotl friend to go on a pokemon journey with sounds great. But they technically aren't fish they are amphibians so they don't perfectly fit the "early game fish pokemon" list. Still good idea.
Wooper is a axolotl pokemon
They actually already have one! Wooper is based off axolotles and looks how you’d think one would look.

That’s ok, there can be more than one Pokémon based on a thing, and I’m not a huge fan of wooper, so I wouldn’t mind another option.
Signature move: Haunting Tears.
Despite being a ghost move, this attack is also super effective against rock, ground and fire types.
It is also the only "water" move this Pokemon line learns.

I agree in part, but better idea. Because this is an adaptation of the La Llorona myth, the first two stages are hydrophobic and only learn the signature move as a ghost/water dual type attack. HOWEVER, Momma Drowns-Her-Kids gets a radically different move pool from her previous forms, to reflect now being The Thing That Killed People With Water rather than The People Killed With Water.
Maybe the kids get a status and support heavy move pool with very little independent offensive power outside of their signature attack (which incidentally causes statuses of some kind - SpA down, flinch, something nasty) and Big Momma gets a bunch of high-power moves with very few ways of inflicting statuses, so you’re encouraged as a Trainer to keep the move throughout the Pokémon’s entire life cycle as a reliable option to cover its weaknesses but those weaknesses radically change.
Just make it similar to Flying Press, that way it can be Ghost and Water simultaneously

I did some research into native Mexican animals, and I’ve got a couple of ideas:
1.) Armadillos are a well known and beloved Mexican animal - and I know we already kinda have one in Sandshrew - but, it really isn’t an armadillo. If you created a Poison/rock armadillo, I think it would be awesome! Maybe called Armalock, from the word armadillo, the hemlock poison, and lock. It could have small horns that it uses to play fight other Armalocks with. It could have an Anteater/armadillo evolution, also poison/rock, called Cycoroxin - from the Latin name for the silky anteater - Cyclopedidae, rock, and ‘toxin’.
2.) Jaguars were a huge part of Aztec culture, their warriors running into battle wearing Jaguar-like clothing. For this reason, a Jaguar Pokemon would be really cool! I think it could have a split evolution line, the first being a small, steel type jaguar cub, named Pumazin, named after the Puma, and Zinc. It would evolve into Titanther, a steel/dark type, resembling an armoured black panther, named after the strong metal, titanium, or the Greek titans, and panther. Alternatively, it could evolve into a fighting/steel jaguar named Xilagar named after the Aztec fighting style Xilam, and Jaguar/Cougar.

Buddy, there's a lot of ghost people and Ghost Pokemon who used to be people.
Hell, there's a kid in Pokemon USUM who has been possessed by Sandygast and I don't think beating him in battle ever got rid of the possession.
My point is... after SM Pokemon isn't afraid to go there in lore if they can't in character design.
Humans are Pokemon. How else could they evolve into Ghost types?

I love the designs! Although I think that you missed a huge opportunity with the shinies, you could have made the shiny a blood red color rather than the light pink, since, you know they’re dead.

For the fish pokemon it would be cool if u implemented the gulf of mexico in a way that the pokemon travels the oceans via the regions warm current. Design wise how about a dorado and whale shark mix!
Maybe for a couterpart to this can be a day off the dead tombstones with the flowers the bread,candles and some other offerings too. Then it's final evolution could be a cross or tomb shape on its head I see it like Yoronaqua and Gallade combined

There are extensive underwater caves in Mexico, that have albino fish with no eyes. Could make for a creepy water/ghost or water/psychic type, although the starter was already a water/psychic finned creature...
Lionfish could make a cool water/poison or water/fire, while a clown fish could make a cute water/fairy line
Maybe the water type could be based off the idea of evolution itself. Here’s my idea- a water type fish Pokémon based on lobed fin fish that evolves into a tictalik-like amphibian- it keeps the water type but gains the ground. It does this because it’s semi-aquatic now. I would love to see it have sprouts of skin to indicate something growing on its back. And for its final stage it could go into many directions, but the idea I really like is an amorphous flying monkey that combines elements from many animals. The reason for a flying monkey is because the march of progress mixed with the turns evolution takes. I would like to see a total type change with the final stage into flying and ground showing a complete species transformation. I hope you like this idea, maybe not as the water type of the region, but for the future! I think this concept would be cool subversion of the typical water type to strong beast standard

Previous humanoid examples in Pokémon such as gardevoir, even though they have somewhat humanoid appearance have exaggerated features, different body shapes.
But for the last one it kind of roams into literal dead woman territory. Maybe if you made her look less like a woman, and delve more into the ghost aspect. It’s a water ghost the only thing close to this so far is a weird jellyfish, so maybe instead of just taking inspiration from the drowned woman, incorporating some more water aspects would look cool. Not explicit “oh here she’s made of water” but maybe looking at midreavus to get rid of the long legs will keep the cool arms design without going to “dead human”

An idea for a regional variant could be a Bergmite and Avalugg variation. Instead of the normal ice typing and icey design, the variants are based on rocks/ground. Bergmite is based on an icicle and could easily be a rock or stalagmite. Avalugg is the iceberg pokemon, however, what Mexico lacks in icebergs it makes up for it with plateaus, which would fit in with Avalugg's flat and cracked appearance.

As a Latino and a ghost type fan I really, REALLY love this one, I screamed of joy when you said that this pokemon 'll be based in La Llorona XDDD cause it's a really popular ghost tale not only in Mexico, but also in a lot of countries of Latinoamerica, the only suggestion I could think is that the color pallete should have a bit more white, but in general I LOVE everything of this design 💜👻

I know they had to alter some of the textures in Terraria for the Chinese version for the same reason, though I'm not exactly sure why. From what I gather it isn't just skulls, they had to change the textures for the Eye of Cthulu and Skeletron bosses iirc, so I think it's just bones and gore in general.
Falconwing 51 They did the same with wizard101. To be approved in china they had to turn all the skeletal animals into living animals, turned skeletal pirate into a puppet, Wraith is just a floating hood with all semblance of his skeleton removed & flesh added to his hands and skeletal dragon was recolored from white to brown to instead resemble wood.
They had to change World of Warcraft in the chinese version to sell it there. The Forsaken, which are a playable race of undead, have all visible bones removed. Almost all visible bones and just general gore is replaced in that version.
I think a Pokémon based on the El Niño weather phenomena could be cool, it could have multiple evolutions, 2 or 3, that starts as a small, temperate storm and evolves into the fully fledged El Niño. The Pokémon could like tornadus with a physical body on the clouds, or it could be just a angry cloud that gradually gets angrier. I think it could be a unique concept for your region
I personally liked the second thumbnail sketch of the final evolution more than the one you went with, but I *loved* the second stage. This was a really cool video, and I can't wait for the next installment!
10/10 my trainer would have one of these babies~! Also the idea that because its a female themed pokemon, it should be a 100% female line imo. I would love to see the use of a sugar skull for a dia de los Muertos pokemon!
Here's a little story I came up with, just from watching this video.
Trainer finds her first wild Pokemon in the form of a Lilorina. The form a strong and unbreakable bond, forged from compassion and together the start to break down the stigma against Lilorina's evolutionary line. After winning a major competition together; Lilorina evolves into Yaqueena. That's when things start to change.
While Lilorina was kind to small children, Yaqueena begins to get a little rough; in training, in battles, and when 'playing'. Trainer begins to think that "maybe the tales are true. Maybe some Pokemon are bad, and nothing can stop that." And then the worst happens. Yaqueena attacks Trainer's companion and their Pokemon, injuring both pretty bad. Maybe it was an accident. Maybe not.
Trainer, afraid for the safety of her friends and even herself, sends Yaqueena away; consumed by fear, doubt and anger. Yaqueena disappears into the night.
Years later, Trainer comes through the town and hears whispers of a Yoronaqua terrorizing other trainers. "It couldn't be..." Trainer goes to find Yoronaqua, hoping to end the hostilities peacefully. And hoping that her intuition is wrong.
But Trainer is right. The Yoronaqua is the evolved form of Trainer's Yaqueena.
Yoronaqua attacks Trainer, angry that the trainer who had shunned her had returned to fight. Trainer takes the hits, apologizing for sending Yoronaqua away. Yoronaqua remembers the adventures it had with Trainer; the good, the bad, and the silly. Yoronaqua stops attacking, catching Trainer as she passes out. For the rest of the night, the Pokemon cares for her former Trainer. When morning comes, Yoronaqua shows that she is sorry for all the hurt she has caused. Trainer forgives her and offers Yoronaqua a place on her team once more.

I feel like the final evo is too human looking. It doesn’t look like a creature, it looks like the ghost of an animated woman. I really like the arms though. I think my problem with it is the proportions, but hey, I’m no artist, they all look great. Especially The first one, it’s so cute.

Aaron Olson I know there are others that look human like, but I feel like they’re actually creatures, like gardevoir has that protrusion and large eyes with a covered face, Mr. Mime and Jynx have weird proportions, Hatereen is super tall and doesn’t have arms, and Lopunny... well Lopunny is a rabbit... a furry wet dream of a rabbit, but a rabbit nonetheless. The final form really looks like Ken Sugimori drew one of the ladies from Coco
