Legit immediately thought of you Jason when I saw Elemental Gearbolt pop up on the wheel haha. Did a spit take when he started dropping the reference to you!
fyi the increased localisation difficulty for NA releases was typically because of the rental market, to stop players being able to beat a game and return it within the rental window.
The only evidence I've found for the increased difficulty being directly because of rentals is an interview where they mentioned they added the monkeys puzzle in lion king because of it on orders from Disney but that was in 1994. While many people claim it as fact for games before this. Personally in the UK I only remember Blockbuster renting out games from about 1993 onwards, I remember because when they started I got a giant promo poster for the NES Pac-Man game that just came out.
@@trailersic I think the main question you need to ask in the absence of definitive proof is why? Why make such a drastic change to the difficulty of a game for a localised release, or more pertinently, how would making such a change be worth doing so to the publisher in a real financial sense? Given this particular game sounds like it could be very short if you were able to breeze through it with no difficulty, it's a fair assumption that dissuading rentals was the motive for the change.
@@corintibbetts-harlow8021 Things can look like they have an obvious answer, knowing what you know, only to disappear into obviously another reason, when you get more information. Better to not assume, or state it as an assumption rather than fact.
I've heard a lot about Elemental Gearbolt, but had no idea Working Designs did so much to the balance. That's a real shame as it sounds ace otherwise. Another class episode mate, love the way you dissect these games but also add in humour and research!
DUDE was literally thinking of you & this exact series not even a couple hours ago! And now here all of a sudden is a bell-notification from your channel on my phone. Crazy how that happens...
You're the voice I hear in my sleep. Quite literally. TH-cam insists on your videos playing when I fall asleep before turning the TV off. I ain't complaining either. Good to see new content!
I really love your channel. Your positive outlook and interest in showcasing out there stuff is a big inspiration to me and my own videos. This is one of the best gaming channels on here imo.
The concept behind The Mission is actually really interesting. It's begging to be converted into a speed running game with a set of single player and coop levels. I reckon it could win over a lot of the people who are into mini golf games by making the focus on executing a chain of targeted shots and using the movement mechanics to get over obstacles and progress through the levels. It's clearly hampered by needing to recreate the advert, but it has potential.
The Mission reminds me there is a licensed football game for Gameboy Advance called Go! Go! Beckham: Adventure on Soccer Island that is a 2D platformer where you, as David Beckham, have to shoot a football at point items and eventually shoot it into a ring at the end of each level. All the enemies in the game only ever try to take possession of the ball from you. It is impressively committed to the idea of what a Beckham mascot platformer would play like. Though unfortunately it is easy to the point of feeling like they didn't wring all the juice they could out of the idea, but still! very cool.
Goddamnit Sean Seanson, you continue to deliver with perpetuity of the postal service. Cannot enthuse enough about how wonderful this series is and how many genuinely interesting titles you’ve covered have intrigued me. Much love and please continue to be yourself. I don’t just come for the games, I stay for the input.
Nascar Rumble is definitely my type of game, something that is usually taken seriously or is made to be quite grounded , but add an elemente that turns it completely chaotic
Rumble Racing is one of my favorite 'kart racers' ever. Cars feel good to drive, great power up balancing, and the tornadoes are HUGE. It does feel like a game with it's license stripped off. I never heard of Nascar Rumble as a kid, but this game felt like an unofficial sequel to Hot Wheels Turbo Racing with it's airborne trick system and car designs feeling like off brand fantasy Hot Wheels cars. Also the vibes are very American Choro Q HG2 box art.
I miss this era of gaming. Back then, developers had tons of creativity and such. Nowadays, it is generic as generic can be. Unless you're an indie developer(s). It's no wonder why I always go back to retro games.
The fact you got through the mission, which looks like a horrible time, i commend you good sir! i could see the chaos of Nascar rumble being fun with friends! Always fun to get the PlayStation fix through these videos!
10:40 That reminds me of the TWEWY games. Though that one revolves around reward drop-rate vs health, I think it's a similar principle of rewarded self-imposed difficulty. I'd like to pick a simple slider over the more conventional Easy/Medium/Hard or story/developer-intended/"hardcore". I do welcome recent games having a myriad of difficulty options too, but self-balancing can itself be a challenge. (some, like MISTOVER (RIP), even lets you be immune to each status of your choosing. Could you imagine playing Pokemon with the option of removing poison and/or freeze?).
I really enjoy your thorough reviews that almost always find a little gem to enjoy even in the nastiest of games(even in The Mission you thought the idea was neat and brought up a nice memory of those weird old ads!) but i really want to say how i love the style and presentation even before youre talking about the games. The little songs you chose, the ominous WHEEL WILL PROVIDE, it always looks and sounds cool to me.
I just wanna say that everytime you make this videos you make my day. It's always a blast to see those old games, and it makes for great content to watch on a day off work, chilling at home with a mug of coffee in hand.
Oh cool, new video with juuuuuuuust enough time to watch it before work. Perfect timing! Love your videos, always good to find new obscure games to try, and the PS1 is one of my favorite consoles of all time. Edit after watching part of the video: Thank you for highlighting the issues with the gameplay changes in Working Designs games. I can tolerate the localization style, although I don't particularly like it, but the gameplay changes are awful. Since most folks are likely to be emulating these games, though, I feel I should mention the "Un-Worked Designs" series of patches that revert the gameplay changes to about a dozen of WD's releases. Unfortunately, Elemental Gearbolt is not one of them, but the patches do cover a decent bit of their catalog.
Man. I cannot tell you how weird the Japan Only Vol 15's "[The Wheel] is providin'" has been for me every time I put that episode on again. An enormously sincere thank you for returning to a "[The Wheel] will provide" format.

It was great to see you tackle NASCAR Rumble; always fun to hear a Euro perspective on arcadey NASCAR titles, honestly. Elemental Gearbolt seems kind of awesome. Great episode!
The Mission has the skeleton of a good game in there somewhere, you could imagine the concept working really well with something like Metal Gear Rising or Vanquish.
On a sadder note for NASCAR Rumble, 2 of the drivers in the game (Kenny Irwin, Jr and Adam Petty) would pass away from on track incidents in the months following NASCAR Rumbles initial release and Dale Earnhardt would pass away 1 year and 15 days after the release of this game
Game 1: I have heard of the game before but never saw it to this extent. Looks nice and the music gives it some nice extra atmosphere points. Game 2: Oh wow, that game is truly obscure. That mission game is an incredible missed opportunity. The concept of kicking a ball at enemies as a weapon sounds so damn cool...doubly so if you can do tricks or have enemies with multiple targets
YESSS SPACE DEBRIS MY GAME WAS PROVIDED BY THE WHEEL !!! Thank you for reviewing this game, it was very interesting to have your point of view! To give a little context I had bought this game for not much a long time ago, honestly I did not expect anything from this game, especially having never played Starfox. When I launched the game, at first I didn't like it, mainly because of its high difficulty, but also for the progression system which requires you to start all the levels from the beginning if you lose. However I understood that this is where all the genius of Space Debris lies, since by starting everything again, you gradually improve and you have less trouble finishing the levels previously played, which makes it easier to progress. The gameplay with its upgrade system on five levels and the use of secondary shots is awesome. Not to mention the production of the game is just superb! I found the game too hard at first, and then I ended up finding the gameplay absolutely addictive, with impeccable production and a very interesting challenge! Reaching and beating the final boss was an extremely rewarding experience ! Regarding your review, I agree with you on several points, but the use of the basic laser and secondary missiles never bothered me, and for the repeating environnements, frankly I hadn't even noticed because I was so into the game, now that you say it it's true. I totally agree about the bosses, they are awesome! And I had forgotten the credits with the developers included! Definitly a GAME FOR YOUR SYSTEM haha I liked it Also, I was maybe expecting this review to answer a mystery that I never understood: how to unlock hard mode?? Did you manage to do it? Now that my game has been chosen, I will choose Buggy as my new game, can you tell me if it has already been chosen by someone else ? Thank you again !
Thanks for your suggestion and the info! Hope you enjoyed the review :) As far as the hard mode, I believe you need to get gold medals on all 10 levels on medium difficulty which is a VERY hard thing to do, especially since it needs to be done in a single run. Bit out of my skill/paintence range haha Oh Buggy! Nice choice, I was only looking into that recently, seems like a perfect game for the channel and one that nobody has chosen yet, so keep your eyes peeled in future :) Thanks again!
@@SeanSeanson Of course I ejoyed the video as all the others, even more so when it reviews a game that I choose ! :) Makes sense that the hard mode could be unlocked with full gold medals obtained, which is also something that my patience couldn't handle, even if I loved the game. Great that no one choose Buggy ! It's a racing game I liked with it's unique concept, quite fun and challenging, looking for your review I'll be very interested in knowing your opinion, let's see if we'll have the same. Hope the wheel will provide it ! \m/ See you for the next video !
Wow, I am a huge fan of that era of arcade racers and I have never played either Nascar Rumble or Rumble Racing. I'm so excited to dive into these. Love your videos.
- Elemental Gearbolt is one of those games I wish we could've ventured more into the world of. Felt too short for how deep the worldbuilding appeared to be before its destruction. - Nascar Rumble is super fun, I think. Lots of shortcuts to take. I got really good at managing the twister. - Space Debris is on my list of games I want to play; more interested in it now that you've spoken about it.
It wasn't until just recently that I learned that Working Designs' changed so much when it comes to the various games they ported. It's true that their releases definitely felt like a premium product. I won't forgive them for making Alundra into such a painful experience by reducing the damage you deal and increasing the damage you take for difficulty reasons. It made the final few areas of that game into such an agonizing slog. Beating it felt like an accomplishment, but also one of those things where I'll never go back to it. Or at least, never intend to beat again. I was really excited to hear of Elemental Gearbolt being mentioned in an earlier video in this playlist. I remember renting it, but never beating it. Now I know why. Working Designs doing their "magic" on the release. I miss these wildly experimental post-apocalyptic settings that's a blend of genres. I'd like to see more creativity in the settings throughout gaming. I've also seen some titles I'm excited to hear of your thoughts on, as far as the Wheel is concerned. Looking forward to your next video!
Game 1 - was so good. I remember seeing banger magazine ads for it back in the day, butI never got around to playing untilrecently and man. Yup, i'ts rough. I only played the NA version, and I did manage to beat it, but... I had to memorize practically every level. Thanks Seanseanseaneansean, great video
I vaguely remember a review of The Mission in one of the UK PS1 mags referring to it as "Nike Poo-er Soccer" which is some prime 90s UK games magazine brainstorming in the pub writing.
I knew Elemental Gearbolt was a light gun shooter but I was not expecting it to be super anime! That opening was a lot, haha. Such a gorgeous aesthetic, though. And wow, the music! I'm one of those people who is not super fond of Working Designs just 'cause their style is way too goofy for me. But you're 100 percent right that without them we wouldn't have an easy way to play a bunch of neat and interesting games. The difficulty stuff is super annoying, though, even with the rental excuse. I had never heard of The Mission (or seen the ad) but, like, wow! I love how delightfully goofy the idea is. The execution? Ehhhh... At least the legally required good PAL music is there, haha. It's a shame the easier difficulties in Nascar Rumble are so wonky and unbalanced 'cause everything else looks like it'd be nice and chaotic. It's probably a little TOO chaotic for me (CTR is about my limit, haha) but yeah, seems like good fun. Space Debris looks pretty fun but more than anything is making me realise I should really get around to playing Star Fox 64, haha. The little robot friend in the intro is pretty cute though! Thanks a bunch for the video and I hope y'all have been doing well! Always appreciate these videos. Sorry for the long comment as well, just couldn't stop typing, haha.
getting a perfect score on expert mode in Elemental Gearbolt sounds like an insane accomplishment. doing it on a specific day in the middle of the expo is the most amazing thing ever. anyone who won one of those truly deserves it.
Always thrilled to see another one of these! You really never know what you'll discover from within the PlayStation's hidden realms. As always, hope all is well and remains well for you, Sean. Looking forward to the next one, whenever it may be.
The good thing about present day is that we have hacks and translation patches that undo Working Designs sins. Ignorance is bliss when a kid and don't realize it, but you really are grateful for something done with care and not ego.
My Irish cousin, I am always super excited for every video you put up, I just smash that "tums up" before I start the video. You're the best in the biz.
Nascar Rumble is super popular in my country to the level that it is the *only Nascar game* on the PS1 for some people. We also remember the cheat code 😂 The same also applies for Harvest Moon Back to Nature
I am absolutely a Nascar Rumble stan. I have Rumble Racing but never played it, I think because it's one of those PS2 games that came on CD and I had one of the phat original PS2s that couldn't read disc games properly. I think I might have to play Rumble Racing now.
I mostly hear about Working Design's Sega Cd/Turbo CD output, so hearing about their... adaption choices on PS1 was interesting! I think there's enough of them on the platform that if you wanted to make a full All Working Designs video it would be worth it (an excuse to play Alundra again, at least. Or in my case, for the first time.). Regardless, glad to have another great video to rewatch constantly :)
Ha! Thanks for the shout-out. :D Been listening to your track lists for quite a while. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your suggestion and the info! Hope you enjoyed the review :)
As far as the hard mode, I believe you need to get gold medals on all 10 levels on medium difficulty which is a VERY hard thing to do, especially since it needs to be done in a single run. Bit out of my skill/paintence range haha
Oh Buggy! Nice choice, I was only looking into that recently, seems like a perfect game for the channel and one that nobody has chosen yet, so keep your eyes peeled in future :)
Thanks again!
@@SeanSeanson Of course I ejoyed the video as all the others, even more so when it reviews a game that I choose ! :)
Makes sense that the hard mode could be unlocked with full gold medals obtained, which is also something that my patience couldn't handle, even if I loved the game.
Great that no one choose Buggy ! It's a racing game I liked with it's unique concept, quite fun and challenging, looking for your review I'll be very interested in knowing your opinion, let's see if we'll have the same. Hope the wheel will provide it ! \m/
See you for the next video !
Wow, I am a huge fan of that era of arcade racers and I have never played either Nascar Rumble or Rumble Racing. I'm so excited to dive into these. Love your videos.
YESSS!! was my reaction when I saw you posted a new video. As a PS1 mega fan I cannot wait for you to drop a new video
The music in Elemental Gearbolt sounds amazing!
I just wanna say that that was a great intro. In less than a minute you told me exactly what the channel was about and what to expect. Subbed
Thank you Sean. These are always a treat :)
You have no idea how perfect the timing of this video is (more perfect than usual, anyway)
I vaguely remember a review of The Mission in one of the UK PS1 mags referring to it as "Nike Poo-er Soccer" which is some prime 90s UK games magazine brainstorming in the pub writing.
"It's not that I have anything against space"
Space: "Whew"
Look what the cat dragged in
A SECOND CAT?!
Just gave Nascar Rumble a try and it really is a fun game, thanks!
Yay new vid!
Also for some reason i was mixing Elemental Gearbolt with Elemental Gelade.
getting a perfect score on expert mode in Elemental Gearbolt sounds like an insane accomplishment. doing it on a specific day in the middle of the expo is the most amazing thing ever. anyone who won one of those truly deserves it.
So glad people can find an Un-Worked version of Elemental Gearbolt now.
That opening tune brings me nostalgia now to where I was when I first discovered this channel.
Always thrilled to see another one of these! You really never know what you'll discover from within the PlayStation's hidden realms. As always, hope all is well and remains well for you, Sean. Looking forward to the next one, whenever it may be.
I love how much that wheel provides...
Oh yeah! The Mission! 😂 Thank you for making Club Mixes and Obscure & Forgotten series. Keep up the good work! 😊👍🏼
Fun suggestion haha, hope you enjoyed!
@@SeanSeanson I did! Thank You! 😊
The good thing about present day is that we have hacks and translation patches that undo Working Designs sins. Ignorance is bliss when a kid and don't realize it, but you really are grateful for something done with care and not ego.
Tru
My Irish cousin, I am always super excited for every video you put up, I just smash that "tums up" before I start the video. You're the best in the biz.
yay! so glad you finally got to experience Elemental Gearbolt. such a neat little niche title, and I figured you'd flip over the ost. 😁
This channel and series makes me so happy
Mentioning Expendable warms my heart
When the world needed him most, he appeared with an incredibly strange thumbnail at his side. May your potato harvest be plentiful, lad.
Weird, I was just rewatching the PS1 Capcom video wondering when the next upload from this channel would be.
Nascar Rumble is super popular in my country to the level that it is the *only Nascar game* on the PS1 for some people. We also remember the cheat code 😂
The same also applies for Harvest Moon Back to Nature
The Legend has returned!
I am absolutely a Nascar Rumble stan. I have Rumble Racing but never played it, I think because it's one of those PS2 games that came on CD and I had one of the phat original PS2s that couldn't read disc games properly. I think I might have to play Rumble Racing now.
Crazy how obviously Elemental Gearbolt is inspired by Panzer Dragoon... nuts to see the quintessential Saturn aesthetic basically rendered on PS1.
"Being alive is a fucking nightmare"
As someone from Belfast, I love that you included that. 😂
I love him so much
I mostly hear about Working Design's Sega Cd/Turbo CD output, so hearing about their... adaption choices on PS1 was interesting! I think there's enough of them on the platform that if you wanted to make a full All Working Designs video it would be worth it (an excuse to play Alundra again, at least. Or in my case, for the first time.).
Regardless, glad to have another great video to rewatch constantly :)
Play the modded PAL version if you can, or the regular PAL version, just not the US version by Working Designs.
@14:07 Wow! I really appreciate that camera-swaying when turning.
I swear to god, I saw the notification and it felt like I reached Nirvana.
Oooh yes, a new Sean Swanson Obscure and Forgotten PS1 Games video!!
We just Love to see it.
Your video always encourage me to give a try to these games.
The soundtrack for Elemental Gearbolt is absolutely beautiful.
I love these videos, Thank You!
welcome back Sean !!
thank goodness- i needed this today
Ah yes, the Irish PS1 guy back again, and all his lovely late 90s title card vibes too.
