    CORRECTION!
Bad news folks we I didn't just miss one, but three whole games!
Two Japan only quiz titles called Kosodate Quiz My Angel (November 1997) & it's follow up Kosodate Quiz Motto My Angel (March 1999) and Micromachine V3 (January 1998) which turns out was published by Namco over in Japan. If theres anything else, please let me know in the comments below, apologies for missing out on em!
also, I just want to highlight the Arcade version of Starblade is actually rendered in real-time using polygons and is not FMV! My bad on that one.
Some folks have also asked for a music list, please find that in the reply to this comment below (it was too large to fit into the video description)
Appreciate the kind comments and support for the video so far, you're all sweethearts

Love the video but you should put up an epilepsy warning before some of the clips, Namco Museum 3 (starting at 46:44 ) what the heck is going on in those rooms with all that flashing of the in-game screens, for example? I am guessing it's an emulator issue? Anyway, it was really hard to watch and had to keep looking away. Keep up the good work, anyways

    • @SeanSeanson
      @SeanSeanson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@bretton_woods I'll always try to consider this during videos, as you can see with the warning during the Time Crisis segment but please be aware I can only go off when games give me warnings ahead of time and what I myself can perceive as potentially triggering, lots of old games are like this and I wouldn't have considered that scene or any others worthy of a warning based on my perception of it (that's also also how it is in game on hardware too , not emulator related.)
I've seen worse in many of these older games, the level of care for triggers isn't comparable to modern day games, so while I try to limit flashing images theres never a 100% guarantee I'll be able to pick up on each and every one of them. Its never intentional, but do keep that in mind going forward.

Honestly, as a HUGE Namco fan(of the classic era, I hate Bandai Namco), this video is REALLY well appreciated here. Not only do you look over every game here that needed more attention, but even exposed me to some new games I never even knew about like Ghoul Panic & Treasures of the Deep. Also I think one thing I'd like to see with this collection videos is something of a top 10 favorites of the list, as something to say "if you had to pick one game here" or "if there's any obscure game i'd recommend above all else"

Fun fact about about Rescue Shot: in Italy bootleggers used to sell the Japanese version under the guise of a fictitious Pokémon game for PS1. Seriously lots of disappointed kids (including my sister) bought a game with a Pikachu on the cover just to find themselves with an indecipherable game where only trial and error taught you that you actually shouldn’t shoot at the rabbit. The reasons why bootleggers decided to pass that game as Pokémon remain mysterious to this day.

It’s because of ridge racer in Tekken that my father got me a PlayStation for Christmas in 1995 when I was 11 years old!!
Me and my father had took a “father and son“ trip to the beach that previous summer and in the arcade, was none other than Tekken and ridge racer and I swear we must’ve played each one of those games hundreds of times?!?!
But having a game like ridge racer at that time, was truly next level and blew my mind completely, even my parents in the adult at the time cannot believe what they were looking at!

surprisingly all of the ending in soul edge had hidden interactive moments but Mitsurugi was the only one that really showed you it was even a thing. I always remember Voldo's one were he rubs his face against soul edge before he places it on a stand in his masters treasure vault, but while he is doing this you can press up and down to make him ..... rub faster.... and if you do it to much the Soul Edge breaks and the ghost of Voldo's master scolds him XD

As someone that grew up with an N64 and Dreamcast, I didn't know Namco was THIS prevalent on the PSX! I obviously knew about Tekken and Ridge Racer, but I wasn't aware of how massive the Namco Museum series was, or how many RPGs and ESPECIALLY light gun games there were.
Also, I had no clue Klonoa's foray into Volleyball was actually good! I just assumed it would be a subpar spin-off. Heart Moo is so adorable!

'Ridge Racer' is responsible for one thing that effectively cemented the PlayStation as a serious player in the console market. It made the Sega Saturn look like the inferior machine thanks to the less than stellar conversion of 'Daytona USA'. Couple that with being less expensive, and you have a console that's guaranteed to be a hit with consumers, which only continued upwards by the time the cartridge-based Nintendo 64 came out.
'Pac-Man World' has an interesting development history. It was initially going to be a full 3D platformer called 'Pac-Man Ghost Zone' that involved a kid transforming into Pac-Man and being sucked into an arcade. It was eventually cancelled due to an apathetic response by a staff member at Namco Japan, which lead to some of the developers being fired. Looking at footage of the game on Playstation Museum the apathy is justified, it's essentially a visually slightly better 'Bubsy 3D' only it would have been released when something that was considered passable in 1996 would be deemed clunky and unenjoyable in the following years. In other words, the decision to scrap the project in favour of what the game became was the right one.
    Another excellent video.

Sad I missed it to be honest, would have definitely included it had I known.
Its like I stated in the video, there doesn't really exist a place on the internet that catalogues and allows you to search every game from an individual publisher/dev so you have to search things out individually, and with games like Micro Machines, I would have just assumed Codemasters handled publishing in Japan. Unfortunate really, but appreciate you letting me know!

Just to add as a Light Gun Connoisseur:
There were no other PS1 Light Guns that could match the G-Con45 (or Guncon) in terms of quality at least in my vast experience, though I've not had the chance to test the Konami Justifier.
The Guncon may lack in buttons and things like vibration or whatnot, but it closely matched the form factor and shape of the Namco Arcade Light Guns, relatively accurate in comparison to EVERY 3rd Party option I've tested. Not to say you can't use 3rd Party options but every Guncon I've tested does not have a wandering sensor that's almost erratic the farther you are from the screen, making precision shots on small targets a chore. I can also safely say that in comparison to any other option, none of them failed me or broke down whereas every other option I had tested eventually did in some form.
The Guncon 2 of the PS2 era certainly improved upon it in features and smaller form factor but both will keep up with each other for accuracy. If you want the best PS1 (and a good viable option for PS2) Light Gun, Namco stood the tallest.

A correction - Regretfully despite catching Ace Combat 3 you did fall into the classic *actually a bunch of content was deleted for the Western release trap* here Sean. Smash Court 2 has an entire single player story mode/RPG board game that was completely deleted from the Anna Kournikova PAL release, the Japanese release is signficantly different than the PAL version despite initial appearances. There's not much good documentation about it online but it is what it is.
Also the entire of Ridge Racer 4 is built from the ground up for the Jogcon, I recommend tracking one down while they're cheap.

Quick Correction about Starblade Alpha: the game actually does support the Playstation Mouse; you have to plug it into the second control port and use the playstation controller in port 1 to handle menus. Once in-game, you just use the mouse to aim. You still have to deal with the game's jerky framerate, but it's a lot more comfortable than using the D-Pad.

The first time I heard of Namco was of course from the legendary Demo One Version 5, first and foremost through the playable demo of Rage Racer that was included on it, before I got to hear about Namco again through Klonoa: Door to Phantomile which I got to play the demo of via Euro Demo 07/98, my 2nd German OPM demo disc. And coincidentally enough, that game eventually became my very first ever game from Namco that I owned just a few weeks after playing the demo, thanks to a friend of my one of my mum's friends who had loads of PlayStation games that were given to me, mostly copied discs of course. Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer Type 4 became the next games by Namco that I got to own and grow up with during my first year of PlayStation in 1998/1999.

Ridge Racer Tipe 4 like you say, is really the most stylistic race game in PS1 era, even I hope they can carry it to the future game, but we know it is not happened. The UI, the Soundtrack, the game visual is still my most favorite all time... it is really withstand the test of time, especially the UI. The UI looks like 2000's era, but more polished & futuristic for the era, which I see it they made it to allow the gamer can appreciate it in the future. The SFX for the UI also somehow fit really well, and you forgot the lading screen... those loading screen is really beautiful! Also the gameplay really perfect for me, even for my brother who more had skill in racer game, it show what car fit the player really well... and like you said, the handling is beautiful as well, as you can feel & pickup how to handle your car & track within second.
I wish Namco Bandai remaster RR4 to nowdays era. I bet the visual & the look will be amazing! expecially seeing the UI in widescreen, I bet really beautiful.

I also need to note that Namco Lightgun games flash only as effect for the game rather than as functional thing on NES.
People do not realize always that NES lightgun was dead simple and was already improved over 80's to impressive lengths, like lightpen accessory for vectrex, as well as some other home computers having lightpens. G-Con essentially synchronizes itself to the video signal with the built in adapter piece, and the gun can actually accurately with computing, timing and following the TV beam, accurately and in real time. This is why shooting outside the screen is one of the main mechanics in many lightgun shooters instead of shooting "nothing in particular" on the screen since all of those are known and accounted for, even before you pull the trigger. It is positively maddening and I am still not sure do lightgun games introduce faked horizontal sync or what is going on and I read few articles on the technology few times.
The end result is; For your capture playing in lightgun mode might introduce something funky to the picture signal, maybe maybe not you tell us. But what comes to flashing that is not - or does not NEED to change for anything else but dramatic effect as the technology could track likely anything but a black screen more or less correctly, and most Gcon calibration screens show how the tracking is happening real time all time instead of NES zapper shenanigans. Heck I think Super Zapper already had something coming closer to Namco's solution for playstation and arcades.

There is one game that is technically missing, I guess a secret Namco title. Ayrton Senna Kart Duel which was released as an EU Exclusive and is a home version of The Namco Arcade Kart Duel from Namco System 12 (PS1 Arcade Hardware). But it is completely stripped of any Namco mention and was brought home by Sunsoft. It is pretty fun. However it will run at 25fps if you play it in PAL mode, but it was originally designed for 30fps so if you force it into NTSC mode it will run better. Definite hidden gem.

  • @RippahRooJizah
    @RippahRooJizah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Also, on the Tales of games...
Phantasia is my favorite of the bounch. It's also the first Tales game I've played so there's that. Destiny is a bit behind and one of my favorite silly things in the game (outside the Heihachi cameo) is the fact that there's a skill where Stahn throws his burning sword at an enemy. Cless has this move in Phantasia as well, but Stahn actually has to go grab it, and is limited to punches and kicks until you get your sword back. I also remember this because in one tournament match an enemy absorbs fire attacks, so I just threw the sword away (as it's basic attacks also deal fire damage) and jumpkicked the enemy to death.
Eternia is my least favorite of the bunch since it does some things that kinda irked me. Largely the fact that there seems to be less hit impact, in terms of visuals and in terms of the fact that sometimes enemies don't react to your hits (or at least more than in previous games, but this may just be me). Not only that, but Reid has my least favorite skill set of the main swordsmen in the PSX games. Cless had probably too many skills by the end of the game and it was hard for me to really come up with a set I wanted, so I would use Combo Command, an item that allows you to do every skill at any time, so long as you use a button combination. Stahn had fewer moves but he had a pretty solid set. Reid, even considering other Tales games I've played, is the only main swordsman in which I could basically just, by the end of the game, had a set of 6 and could safely ignore the rest, as he seemed to have too many redundant moves, and some stronger versions of moves that are less useful (The Demon Blade and Tempest skills come to mind, the basic versions are more useful for me).
That said, there's some cool stuff. Also the guy who voiced Reid is Sly Cooper's voice actor as well.
