Fabricating metal saw horses

- In this one, we fabricate some steel saw horses to help us while doing big jobs here in the shop. We use dual shield MIG to weld them up, and we do some cope work with a torch. I had an Intern on this project, and I was quite impressed with how he did. Hope you guys enjoy!

As someone who doesn't have a lot of hands-on experience with welding and fabrication, I find this sort of video valuable where you are teaching an intern.

22 minutes.. Bridger has the same angle that I weld 90% of my welds. He is still pushing it, but the nozzle is out of his way and he can see what's going on. My advice at the end would be to stop linear movement 1/4" from the end and rotate on the same axis as the weld until he gets to his 15-20 degree angle the other way and then drag the last 1/4". (I learned that from a guy that worked in a shipyard.) I have passed many x-ray structural tests using that technique on horizontal and overhead welds.
Bravo to you for not being an ass when he needs instruction. I have seen people try to teach welding and expect perfection from the beginners. By not overly criticizing, you keep him from getting frustrated.
I absolutely love seeing the trade get taught to the next generation, and the calmness in the explanation is great. Nice job !

Thank you for taking time to invest in a young persons future and keeping the trades alive here in the USA. Taught welding for a trade school in Phoenix AZ for High School Students after I retired. Each class was 3 1/2 hours a day with 2 classes of 24 students in each. Amazing how much they absorb and the drive they get to be the best. They just need someone like you to give them a shot.

HD saw horses are a must have. Build me some a couple years ago to match my welding table and are fully adjustable so you can level it out if need be and holes in the top so I can use my table clamps on them. Nice set for sure 👍👍👍

Nice job Bridger your saw horses came out nice brother. You will be driving the new truck and trailblazer to side jobs in no time 😁 I have had both rear ends out of a Mack dump truck and supported the chassis with a homemade steel saw horse. And yours look heavier built than mine. Those things will hold up a house lol

Great Video involving the Family 👍 mate , I did a similar job down under in this part of the world 🦘 , actually dropped another box section sleeve inside the existing one cast in the concrete driveway for added strength because it could be only welded from the top as well , kids usually bounce off the post when there shooting hoops , even the big ones 😂. Love your plasma table and all your Miller machines against the wall , I'm a big Miller man at heart .

This is by far my favorite to date. Kudos to you passing on the trade. He is taking to it like duck to water, a natural. You are so patient and give clear instruction.... Needle skadle looks like a useful tool 😆

Great job teaching your son. Just scared me when I seen that un-capped argon bottle free standing on the floor, I have seen those go off after falling over. Full bottle will go over 300 feet. Keep up the great work and videos. Thanks
Hood time and practice is key. I remember the first time I held a stick welder and torch in shop class. Safety is another learning aspect as well. You guys are doing great and I enjoy this channel. Thanks for sharing. Soon I plan on doing saw horses but not as wide.

Honestly its great to see you teach your kid how to fabricate stuff. But if youre not teaching him to use the correct PPE from the start youre doing him a massive disservice. For dual shield flux core you need to wear a respirator and unless he needs glassses there is no reason for him to have his face so close to the weld. You only get one set of eyes and lungs please look after them

Good to see your son taking an interest in your profession. I've never run dual shield. I'd like to try it. I am curious, why you told Bridger to push. I was taught "when there is slag, you drag" - I assume that "rule" does not apply to dual shield? What gas do you run with it?
It’s exciting to see him taking an interest. You should try dual shield. I think you would fall in love. It’s just my opinion, but I believe the “If there is slag, you drag” phrase is complete BS. Think about stick welding for example, When you weld overhead you should push the rod. When welding uphill, you push the rod. I feel like every process has examples of that phrase being incorrect. I took a
College class and the instructor used to say that. Then I got a job in the real world, and figured out that couldn’t be further from the truth. I didn’t mean to go off on a rant, just trying to explain why I feel that way. I use straight CO2 with my dual shield wire.

I didn’t cut them in half. They were drops from a previous project. We welded them together so they would be long enough.
you need more of a gap have bridger do a 3/32 gap

BTW, where did you get your nut and bolt kit from? What did you get? How is the quality? How is the price? I am currently shopping and I think I will just go with all grade 8 because the cost isn't much from where I am looking. Thanks
Thanks! I bought my bolt bins off Zoro.com, and I got the hardware from a local company here in town. It was probably $350 to fill it with hardware.(25 of each size) I love them so far. Gotta love a good bolt bin! I got stainless, grade 5, and grade 8 metric and standard. Hope this helps, and Thanks for watching!
