  • Hey there, in this video I installed a Natika backup camera on my First Gen Tundra and take you along for every step of the process. It is a fairly easy install, and with some clever wiring this camera helps simplify the process a ton. Hopefully you find the video helpful, and thanks for watching! - Sal

    Very professional looking rear camera installation! I was a bit intimidated by the task of installing a rear view camera on my gen1, so I had it professionally installed. The camera on my truck was installed on the top of the license plate, but I definitely dig the camera near the tailgate handle.

    Nice install! My self-install (06 Tundra) for my new radio head unit was similar, but I mounted the camera to the license plate. The wire routing was the same up through the grommet under the driver's seat. From there, I ran the wire over to the center consul and tucked the wire along the consul edge and carpet. I then fished the rest behind the dash and connected to the radio head. I purchased the head unit and BU camera from Crutchfield. They have some awesome connectors that I liked better than the fold over clip kind. Well done

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Steve, that routing sounds good too, especially if you've got captains chairs up front instead of a bench like I've got. Good to know about the other connectors too, I'll have to check them out. I typically like to solder this wiring, but for ease of install I chose these splicing ones. Thanks for watching! - Sal

    Dude. Thanks for this video! I have a 2002 and am looking to put some money into it. This video is a huge help especially since you have a link for an aftermarket head unit that already fits.
    Was there anything special you needed to do or was it as simple as removing the old head unit and simply bolting the new one in?

  • @BRTardiff
    @BRTardiff ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. The nice thing about choosing the handle is it’s easy to replace if you messed it up or change your mind in the future. (My rear handle ripped off a few years ago and it was an easy replacement.)
    Did you replace your head unit or buy it that way? I still have the stock JBL unit. Curious if your after market head unit was wired to bypass the amp or if speakers were just rewired?

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point about being able to replace the handle, I had replaced mine about a year ago because the handle ripped off as well and it's a very easy job. I installed the Atoto head unit, and I bypassed the factory amp. Not sure if it's correct or producing the best sound it could, but it's been working for me lol thanks for watching! - Sal

    Just a comment about running the wiring through the rectangular hole in the end of the PU bed. That is the hole you would insert the spare tire rod through. You could chaff your wiring when lowering the spare tire? It might be better to remove the tail gate and drill a small hole next to the rectangular hole? Just an idea. Great video!

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, didn't even think about that. I'm not sure what that spare tire rod looks like but I think you should be able to avoid chafing the wiring. Definitely an option to drill another hole right there. Thanks for watching!

  • @bhaubert
    @bhaubert 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Was looking to do something similar. I noticed you can't see your trailer hitch in the view, which would be my primary use case. As such, I was thinking a license plate model may be a better idea vs. putting in the handle.

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, unfortunately that is one of the biggest downsides of mounting it here. I know that they sell handles with an integrated camera that may have a view of the hitch, but the license plate one may be your best, sure bet solution. Plus, it will still work if you have your tailgate down, which mine does not. Thanks for watching!

    One Question...I have an ATOTO F7 XE head unit. the reverse function works flawlessly, However, the "live rear view " function is not working.. it say's "NO VIDEO DETECTED". Does your "rear view function work? Thankyou again

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question, and one that I played around with too. I have the same issue where it doesn't play for the live rear view. I think that the issue is that we tapped into the reverse wire to trigger the camera turning on, and using that live rear view button doesn't trigger it on its own. Not sure if we could install a separate relay for that to work properly, or if it's more-so designed for a separate camera like a front view camera out back. Not sure. Thanks for watching, and glad the install went well otherwise! - Sal

      I have had two of the higher end Atoto head units in my tundra, both 10.1”, the Atoto A6 and the S8. I, personally, would stay away from Atoto after several terrible experiences with their customer service. I’ll try to keep it short…
      The A6 which cost like $400 at the time, straight up crapped the bed after lien 8 months. Atoto customer service was garbage. They offered me either A) a refurbished, lower grade, less expensive head unit-even though it was under warranty. Or B) to get the newer S8 model of the same level of head unit that I had already, they forced me to pay the difference in price between the older lower grade refurbished model they offered. Stupidly, I angrily forked over the $. Well after like 10 months the head unit started completely factory resetting itself at any random time totally out of the blur. I’d be driving along and then out of nowhere it factory resets, losing all my settings, all my apps, all thr customizations. It was infuriating. Atoto customer service slow walked me until literally like 2 days after my 1 year warranty was up and then completely denied my warranty. It was complete bullshit since I had been emailing with them about it for months before the warranty was up. Pisses me off. So I personally will never buy Atoto again. They also claimed they have just as good a warranty as Apple which about made me fall over Laughing. Tess, sure….except I’ve never had every Apple prodict I bought die within the first year and then have customer service screw me out of replace both times. I would definitely look into getting either like a Joying or preferably a Teyes CC3.

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I don't think so. The way I have it wired up, it only gets power when the reverse lights are on because that's the signal wire to the head unit. I've tried using the camera while in drive or park and I can't get it to work. I'm sure if you wired it differently you could get it to turn on whenever you want, but it may not turn on automatically when you shift into reverse. The other sorta option would be to have a second camera that you could mount somewhere else like your third brake light and have that wired so it gets power all the time and you can select it in your head unit when you want to check on your load. Just spit-balling here. Thanks for watching! - Sal

    I need help finding a double din dash kit for my 2000 tundra (the peice with the 4 10mm bolts that holds the radio in place) i currently have my radio attached to my A/C control panel and is a major pain when removing.

      Hmm, I'd assume that you could find some universal double din brackets on Amazon with a bunch of holes to adapt to different models of head units. My head unit came with brackets so I didn't do any research myself. Best of luck figuring it out tho! - Sal

    If you ever lose the metal clips that keep your heater knobs tight, you can use some alien tape stuffed into the post hole or just regular like 3m double sided tape, or even just a rubber band wrapped around the post…I’ve also used just some silicone tape in the post hole as well, they all work great to keep your knobs on tight. It’s one very common issue with these first gen tundras.
