  • In this video I show you the process I follow when replacing a CV axle on my 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The process will be very similar for a 4runner or Tacoma, or really almost any IFS vehicle with CV axles. The process I follow makes the job very fast as simple. Thanks for watching!

    I always look forward to your videos. I changed passenger side CV Axle yesterday on GX 470. I had trouble getting the axle out and going back in. You make it look pretty easy, but you're a big guy that can manhandle things better than I. Ended up my OEM axle was broken when I took it out. 227K miles, it was probably due, I was mostly concerned about the torn boot so....what the heck, change it all. Glad I took that route now. Your video is what I used as my reference, I am extremely grateful for this video, thank you!
    Looking forward to seeing the solid front axle swap on the trail...I've had this GX470 since February and bought it as an extra vehicle to tow behind motorhome that is off road capable. It checked out in remarkably good shape and ready for dirt, but I'm not as daring as you off the road. It's still mostly stock but will upgrade as replacements are necessary

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! From what I've seen, the 8" clamshell is a pretty tough unit and should handle rcv's. Of course you're right that there has to be a weak point that could break somewhere, and I'd hate for that to be inside the differential! With that new RCLT setup from Marlin Crawler they've been running 40" tires with RCV's on an 8" differential and they said it's been ok. I called and asked them about that specifically. So my guess is that you'd really be ok doing that with 35's.

Axle threads are the same huh, that was smart of them. Which CV brand did you have in there that broke? How many miles did you get with it? What brand did you replace with? how much of a benefit would it be to just get that cage from RCV do you think? If they would even sell it which they probably wouldn't. I don't feel like spending $3k on a couple axles at the moment though which is what it costs for my application

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they don't sell their parts to my knowledge. The price is pretty steep, and I've heard that their warranty speed has been pretty slow lately, in the case you did break one.

    Does that bottle jack fit in the OEM jack compartment?
    Also, I would double check the front diff fluid. When I swapped my CV, I had it lifted on its side and it still leaked a little.

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it does not. I would check the level, but this differential is long gone!

    I’ve gotta do the same thing this week lol I have a question. I lifted my front up and spun the tires on both sides. The right side didn’t make any noise but the right side make a light ticking noise when I spun the wheel fast enough. Any thoughts on that noise?

      Without hearing it in real life I couldn't say. It may very well be nothing.

    I hope you bought a new bearing to rebuild the original part and have it as a spare. The original CV axles are superior to the junk metal used to build the aftermarket parts.

    I use Lotus Devolpmrnent upgraded axles. Its kind of like a halfway point between an OEM and RCV axles. I think RCVs are overkill for the front clamshell. Will we be seeing a SAS series?

      I have found that the higher priced parts store CV axles are just as good as OE.

    Hey I have moderately built FJ 2010 with 2.5 inch lift. I need replace my cv axles due to a ripped boot. Curious if you’re running stock cv axels? And if so do you think they’re up for the challenge with the slightly higher angles with the lift?

    • @offroadhub.official

      I think OE axles are just fine until you get a front locker.

    Great instructional video on cv axle. Definitely a must watch and to know when out off ok a beaten path. You're steps are very simplistic and easy to understand.
