One of the finest of all first symphonies - so beautifully played here.

Gosh!! I have not heard Winter Daydreams played with this outstanding quality since that famous Karajan/BPO recording of the 1970’s and this has the advantage of 2022 sound recording techniques. The recording engineers must have realised they were capturing something astonishingly special when those French Horns came in towards the end of Land of Gloom, Land of Mist. I was on the edge of my seat as the Finale unfolded with amazing sounds coming from every section of the Sinfonia Rotterdam. Clearly the players had an amazing rapport with Conrad van Alphen. As I look through the other comments, I see I am not the only one who clocked this as a great piece of music making. And yes, I did ‘Like’ and ‘Subscribe’.

The Symphony No. 1 in G minor, subtitled « Winter Dreams », Opus 13, by Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky is of incomparable melodic richness, a refined and poetic lyricism with a magnificent orchestration. The slow-tempo second movement, titled « Land of gloom, land of mist » is one of his most inspired. After an Introduction of muted strings, a dreamy melody appears in the Oboe. Then a contrasting theme follows in the violas and flutes. The two chapters alternate as Tchaikovsky creates exquisite, snowy orchestral effects around them. The main theme returns first to the cellos, then to the horns for a climactic variation. The opening string introduction then returns as the movement fades. Tchaikovsky embodies the dominant figure of 19th century Russian Romanticism in all its popular and generous. « The only music capable of touching, moving and reaching is that from an artistic soul driven by inspiration. » Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky *Lucien*

Well... that was... er... rather nice! Some beautiful playing in the slow movement, and the energetic finale brought out Tchaikovsky 's brilliant counterpoint. A well deserved standing ovation at the end. Thank you!

Definitely in the top 5 as the one of the greatest first symphonies of all time. Right behind in this order: Mahler no. 1, Brahms no.1, Tchaikovsky no,1, Beethoven no.1, and Shostakovich no. 1 !!!!!

It is nice to wach a conductor who looks to every player and makes a contact with them. In finland we say: Kapellimestarilla pitää olla partituuri päässä, ei pää partituurissa. In English: The conductor should have the score in his head, not the head in the score.

Great, but show the man with the camera where the viola-section is seated before the concert...
