Faure Requiem is pure genius. Such a beautiful performance by all. I fell in love with the Requiem a number of years ago when I had the honor to sing it as a member of my church's choir. It is my favorite piece.

To my opinion, Fauré wrote the most beautiful Requiem. The most peaceful, the most confident, the less thunderous (Verdi, Berlioz, Brahms ...)
The sanctus envelops the listener, the believer, the afflicted one, in the veils of hope in a future life. No revolt, only peace. Despite Fauré was agnostic ...

Wonderful!! Thank you for making this a requiem rather than like some recordings I've heard that do their best to blow off the doors of the hall. This is soft, quiet, peaceful - as such a work should be. I'll be 80 next year. Oh to have something like this peformed at my passing . . .

Catholics, all over the world, including of course those living in the Neetherlands, are confident that this excellent concert, this wonderfull Requiem Mass is the sincere expression of true spirituality in the face of human death and consequently the most strong and vivid repulse of the laws of euthanasia in the Neetherlands. Spain is suffering now the most unspeakable pain along the course of the current pandemia, while silent deputies, are writting in the shadow and silently the new euthanasia disgraceful law, absolutely and frontally opposite to the natural law.

    • @danmoran454
      @danmoran454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@ Luis profBove: Except this is not a liturgical or spiritual performance. There is no procession, no processional crosses, no acolytes, no incense, no priests, no Gospel reading, no Homily, no Communion, no High Altar or any of that. This is a superbly outstanding -- both Orchestra and Chorus -- secular concert hall performance. Some people seem to confuse the two just because the text of the piece is sacred or from the Requiem Mass setting. When I was in major Orchestra Choruses with performances in major concert halls, it didn't matter what Requiem Mass or oratorio we were performing, there was nothing sacred or at all spiritual about the performance, other than the text. None of the choristers blessed themselves before processing onto the stage because it was not a religious or even remotely spiritual occasion. And the audience knew that and applauded our secular performance, often with a standing ovation. Applause is inappropriate for a liturgical performance. You seem to be implying this is a liturgical performance and about spirituality. It is not. And it's not just (Roman or French) Catholics who use the Requiem Mass setting, Anglicans and Lutherans do as well.

I guess "natural law" means whatever suits you. Wouldn't be more "natural" living from what you hunt, renounce modern medicine and comforts and die (if you are lucky) in your forties? Euthanasia is not more unnatural than prolonging life when you are demented or seriously ill.

    • @pilou09100

Fauré's music must be decoupled from any religious meaning because Fauré was agnostic. But despite everything, he signed there the most profoundly serene, the most completely confident in the face of death and finally, the most Christian of requiems.

This is an extraordinary piece. I remember listening to it many time, wheter during educational in music schools in Poland, being part of boy's choir or in other concerts. It contains everything and at the same time is very original, simple, surprising and before all - very M O D E R N I S T I C and has got some secrets inside, that could not be explained to me.
I'm always deeply moved listening to this.

Simply marvelous. There are a lot of great Requiems, but this has always been my favorite, and the Agnus Dei in particular is one of the most beautiful ever written. Maestro van Alphen really respected Fauré's tempo markings, and just beautiful performances by soloists, chorus and orchestra. So glad I found this!

@ Sergio Contreras: "Excellent Choir's?" There was only one Chorus and that was Laurenscantorij Rotterdam. They are superb. They sing with perfect intonation and extremely clear diction. I suspect the women on stage -- both Orchestra and Chorus -- who don't think of themselves as beautiful will feel slighted by your comment. As well the men who are considered handsome. I looked at all of them, both women and men since they were all equally part of producing such a stellar performance. And Conrad van Alphen looked like he would be a pleasure to work with. The camera crew also did an excellent job.

The Requiem of Faure is very dear to my heart. The others I do particularly like is Verdi and Mozart. This does not mean I don't like the others Requiems. It is all a matter of choice. Having said that this orchestra, choir and conductor are excellent particularly since most of the Choir are so young and they all have such a glorious voice. Excellent performance!

A very impressive performance indeed! In my view, this is the go-to version on youtube at the moment (January 2021). Not only the performers are excellent, but also the acoustic and video engineering. (Yes, I could be picky about the soloists). It´s a pity that in late September, there are so many coughs and splutters from the audience.

A wonderful performance, thank you to all involved. It's such a shame about the constant coughing from the congregation; I've never understood why this is considered acceptable. If you have a bad cough you shouldn't be there. I was impressed on a visit to the Wigmore Hall in London, where before each performance the audience are reminded to silence their phones and also refrain from coughing. Another terrible example of audience misbehaviour is clapping their hands together before the last note has died away; it's ignorant and insensitive, and motivated I feel by some misplaced desire to 'get in on the act'. The best way an audience can do this is by listening respectfully and with concentration.

This is a terrific performance but marred by poorly mic'd soloists. This is a characteristic common among other available performances. The one marked Best Recording is indeed so because the soloists are well mic'd. But I prefer to see the performance so this is one I'll be showing to my classical music club.

An interesting performance and recording. The producers need to think much more carefully about microphone placement. The audience was one of the noisiest I have ever heard, but this could have been largely mitigated by better placement of more directional microphones. The performance itself had some lovely lyrical passages where choir and orchestra produced a particularly fine musical texture. However, the operatic style of some of the soloists is unsuited to this work and goes against the specifically expressed wishes of the composer. The choirmaster and soloists need to listen to performances like the 1994 recording by the late conductor Richard Marlow and the choir of Trinity college Cambridge and in particular the beautiful singing of Camilla Otaki in the Pie Jesu. Faure specifically asked for the male singers to sing in a 'cantor' style rather than and operatic style as heard in some parts of this performance. Again, an old Cambridge recording would help illustrate the point. The baritone Jon Carol Case sings exactly as desired by Faure is the 1967 recording by Sir David Wilcocks directing the Kings College Choir and New Philharmonic orchestra.
