1080i only looks good on a tv that handles interlaced content well and there is no list or wiki for such things. 720p is the best for 99.9% of consumer sets. There is a bios mod that forces 480p in 480i games, but idk if it effects performance in game.
Basically only CRTs deal well with interlaced content due to how they are designed: in simple terms, there is a blaster that shoots lines to the glass. Modern displays and capturing software deal with video as photos in sequence, not as lines. To deinterlace, the deinterlacer has to delay at least 2 fields since it has to wait for the odd and even lines and then it sends a complete "photo" for the display or capture device
The only advantage of interlaced resolutions at the time was that it was possible to send more video information without the need to upgrade the whole transmission method, since it is sending half the data of a progressive image at a time. Interlaced video is only used currently on sports broadcasting
FYI original Halo 2 supports native widescreen if your xbox is set to widescreen. I can see in your footage of it that the unaltered HD+ HDMI mod footage aspect ratio is actually correct. When you use the M classic to make it 4:3 then it is being squished. You can see with the weird shape of the halo on screen as in blows up that it is being squished on the horizontal axis in your M classic footage. You can even compare it to the MCC version of Halo 2 with original graphics and it matches correctly.
Thank you for spotting that. I thought Adam of all people would know about how widescreen was done back the day with 720x480 stretched by the TV just like DVDs do. I know this cause I'm making 352x240 home made VCDs for my Sega Saturn.
Another thing to add is the M classic is causing a halo effect through fake sharpness to an already pristine image from the xbox hd+, so in my opinion the M classic is a downgrade when combined.
@@silentd76I have an mclassic and I've only ever seen this halo effect in videos zoomed all the way in on a single tree branch or something, never noticed it in real life, and the clarity is unmatched, they don't make a better HDMI upscaler as far as I'm aware
Just a little word of advice to anyone looking to install this. Don't do it on a 1.6. The ribbon cable is a total bitch to solder. By comparison the ribbon cable on the earlier board revisions is pretty easy to solder. Great device. Have one on my earlier units and I use the chimeric adapter on my 1.6 units.
For years I remember you mentioning how you were surprised how the OG Xbox was lacking in the HDMI mod scene, while many of its contemporary consoles were getting HDMI alternatives. But fortunately that is a thing of the past...the OG Xbox looks FANTASTIC with HDMI and especially when paired with the MClassic.
I chased best picture quality on older systems for years. It was my gaming drug. I hit a wall of being tired of that. Due to money, time, effort and some products just sucking. So component is all good for me on og xbox. But its still nice to see things still happening for old consoles.
I chipped my OG Xbox and bought the Monster Cables RGB Scart cable, the chip allowed me to force progressive on all games(not to mention play DVDs and pirate games from standard DVD -R discs as well as forcing 60hz NTSC onto all PAL games) which produced a fantastic image quality on my CRT. The cable also had a jack port for an optical out adapter but my gawd was it a challenge finding one, in the end it came down to the one salesman in a Comet store(RIP Comet) who was actually old enough to buy a pint in the pub. I described what I was looking for and he realised he had seen one out back and brought it to me 20 minutes later with the still sealed packaging covered in an inch of dust, this is one of the times I was more than happy to pay the stupid Monster Cables price(£35) without hesitation. That adapter and optical cable pack remains to this day the only one I have ever seen and yes I do still have it, bloody thing took me over a year to find.
This is a great video, and is actually good you did mention the Mclassic. Believe it or not, you would be surprised how many people never heard of it. I actually use the Mclassic with the Wii Hyperkin HDMI. And it looks great on my Samsung TV with HDR+ enabled. But going back to the Xbox, that HDMI mod is day and night difference. I also got Steel Battalion recently! Only did the first Mission for now to check if my controller worked. It'd be nice to get online if I ever get around researching the xlink Kai software or whatnot.
Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance PAL version is 576i I remember this being an issue here in the UK where you cannot get the NTSC version which supports 480p. Its a shame as this was one of my favourite OG XBOX games.

This looks great. It just sucks that it's a bit of a challenge to install for inexperienced people in the modding scene. But yeah, this with the mClassic look really nice.
I saw on the other channel how much work goes in this mod that I pretty much said: no thanks I am more than happy with my softmodded one with component cables
True. It's pricey and hard to pull off correctly. Then having it be directly into the TV kinda sucks... I like having everything on a switch board... Also you can get HD with a 360/xbox/series x so just do that instead. The only lame thing is that SOME games like baldurs gate dark alliance run like trash on the 360 and the game only seems to run well on a OG xbox.
If you put your Xbox in PAL mode and run a PAL game it normaly normally run in 576i this was the normal resolution in Europe. Back in the day tvs had scart but most of the time we used SCART Male to 3 RCA Female
I just got a new Sony OLED TV and a Denon A/V Receiver, both only have HDMI inputs (receiver has RCA but no YPbPr, so not even considering composite). Trying to think of the best way to hook up my OG XBox to the receiver through HDMI so that I get the best video quality on my OLED TV and the best audio quality on my home theater setup (5.1 Dolby). Have considered the OSSC but more than even the cost, I've heard that configuring the settings is a real headache everytime, I want more of a plug and play solution. This is the work around I've come up with so far: XBox -> OEM Monster Component Cables -> Portta Component to HDMI (model without scaler) -> High Quality HDMI Cable -> mClassic -> Denon A/V Receiver Sony OLED (via eARC)/Home Theater. Thoughts on this config? Would it introduce too much lag? Do you think it would allow me to maximize on the quality of the OEM Monster component cables and the mClassic scaler without the Portta getting in the way and interfering too much? Also, would the Portta (model without scaler) be able to automatically detect and deinterlace 480i content? I don't believe the mClassic handles any sort of deinterlacing. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Similarly, the work around I've come up with for hooking up my Wii is: Wii -> Retrovision HD Component Cables -> Portta Component to HDMI (model without scaler) -> High Quality HDMI Cable -> mClassic -> Denon A/V Receiver Sony OLED (via eARC)/Home Theater. The Wii config seems more straightforward since there’s no interlaced content, but the lag and potential a/v quality interference that the portta might add has me thinking. I’d really appreciate any advice on both these 2 configs and if you think they'd be a good option to go with for the OG XBox and the Wii! Edit: RetroTink 2x Pro isn't really an option since it doesn't handle 480p input and a large amount of the OG XBox library and all Wii games are 480p and upwards…
Got the 5x in the mail today. Got everdrives for the N64, SNES, and Genesis/Sega CD/SMS coming in the mail. Excited to check out a ton of games I've never had the chance to. Mode for the Saturn/Dreamcast and Super system 3 HD for the Turbografx16 after! Which, I've heard it fits pretty tight on an actual Turbografx16 but hopefully it works fine
I ordered a Halo Edition OG Xbox with this mod (amongst others) pre-installed a month ago, and I received it Saturday. I definitely agree that the mClassic is a must for lag-free, quality upscaling.
I just bought a orig ps3 for just this reason. Best way to play ps2 games in hd to date. Sadly there is no better way. Even if the ps2 did come up with a great hd mod, it would still load a lot slower than the obviously more powerful ps3 console.
It's always hard to get ahold of these things whenever they come out. Everyone be sure to buy one when it comes out, because in a year or so's time it'll be 500 dollars.
Actually no ones really buying them at the moment, last time I checked it was on sale. Just got mine installed a few days ago and it’s pretty great but my only gripe is the graphical glitch at forcing 720p which is said the dude will produce a firmware update to fix that. Also playing games at 480p makes things that shouldn’t be seen obvious like many seams between walls that flash white aliasing which is distracting but you get used to it as it was a limitation of the time.
@@Shaka_Zulu Well, I'm not only talking about that, there's stuff like the WiiDual or DCHDMI which are pretty much impossible to get at a price under 400$
@@PersTG didn’t know theres an internal HDMI mod for the Wii, I have a wii2hdmi adapter but honestly I just use a Wii U. I just had a DCHDMI installed a few days ago, I got it off eBay from an installer that didn’t have the time to install it for just under 200CAD. N64 HDMI mods have proven much more illusive to me though. If you try and search eBay for some of the mods just make sure to avoid clones as they won’t be able to update to future firmwares.
9:28 "I and P?" More like I.P. Freely! BTW, interlaced video means the television is only displaying half the information, so it would be like the equivalent of 540p. That said, the blu-ray player I have hooked to my old HDTV "auto" sets itself to 1080i, which looks better anyways because the TV's method of deinterlacing looks better than if I tried manually setting the player to 720p because a lot of motion particularly text scrolling during credits at the end of a movie look aliased and blocky
Before I finish the video, I had the XBOX2HDMI by Teknemesis.. Mine had diagonal slowly moving jail bars. Not a big deal but they showed up in my captures. Ended up selling it on eBay for what I paid and mentioned the flaws. I had the Pound and it had no issues although technically likely had more latency if broken down. Now, I have the OEM Component Cable. Just the cable version which many don’t know exist, and yes it also has optical output. I paid like $80 for them around 4-5 months ago. Coupled with the RetroTINK 5X it looks really good. I don’t even use the mClassic with the Xbox anymore.
@@Di3mondDud3 They’re not bad but mine has interference which caused the jail bars. Tried two Xboxes and different TVs with the same issue. Now I get a slightly better image using the oem component with the TINK.
I know there was, I even saw it live at a TooManyGames once. But it seems to have just vanished. I think the issue might be just how many different PS2 variations there are.
No point. GSms doesnt work great, and 480p is so rare anyway. Most tvs wont take 480i over hdmi so really component is the best for the ps2 other than scalers. Xbox actually supports high def and progressive on basically everything your average person wants to play.
I love these HDMI mods however I don't play the system often enough to justify the cost so I get the HDMI cables and or adapter for the GameCube. It's good enough for me and for the amount I time I play them.\ I actually just sold my GameCube component cables for $400, can't believe someone would pay that amount but they did. Got the Prism adapter it's more modern anyway.
Very cool. I have the chemeric adapter. He had a run where he made 200 of them and got one of them. Would like this bc that is awesome that a game can be turned into 480 p.
Catwoman, such an underappreciated gem. BTW I know you're not a mobile game enthusiast but if you want to get an analogue pocket they've opened preorders back up and (I just checked) still taking them. I can't wait for the TG16 adapter... though I don't have the money for games lol...
18:00 NO games released in PAL territories supported 576p, only 576i. Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to deny us the progressive scan modes. The only pre-HDMI native PAL systems that supported 480p were the Dreamcast, PS2 and PSP. I always thought it was an odd decision not to give us 576p, because even 576i has a higher resolution than 480p. Then again, I know even some Dreamcast games were slowed down by 50Hz rather than recoded to 50Hz in their 576i modes.
Justice League Heroes I have that game for the original Xbox and side note I beat it in terms of gameplay just like Marvel Ultimate Alliance except it's only two player not four player speaking of which both of those games came out in the same year 2006 I have always felt like Marvel Ultimate Alliance overshadowed Justice League Heroes
Hey, Adam, when are you going to review the OGX360? Its an adapter that allows Xbox 360 wireless/wired controllers to work on OG Xbox, it even supports the Steel Battalion by using the Xbox 360 chatpad
I don't think anyone has asked this question but, has anyone (including yourself, Adam) test both Rolling & SCAR: Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo (on PS2 USA only, as Alfa Romeo Racing Italiano)? Both games were locked to PAL only Xboxes (Rolling did get a XBE patch to fix this, SCAR to my knowledge never did), therefore you couldn't force NTSC whatsoever. I assume the XboxHDMI+ will not have this issue but curious if anyone ever confirmed it working.
Umm... Adam, most Widescreen games are anamorphic 720x480 like DVDs. It's supposed to look squashed until the TV stretches it to 16:9 correctly. That's what DVDs and consoles did at the time: Dreamcast (CodeBreaker), Gamecube (also some Widescreen cheat), Xbox, PS2, and heck the Wii! And nearly all Wii games are widescreen and what signal did they use? 720x480! I thought you of all people knew that. Halo CE has a 1280x720 patch, and Halo 2 is one of those 720x480 Widescreen intended games. You should listen to mr munkee.
Completely off topic but I’ve just found out the physical copy of Halo Infinite WON’T play before the release date. MS are blocking it from being played until release, even if you try and install it offline.
Someday ill splurge for one of these internal hdmi mod. But im lucky enough to have the chimeric adapter. I need to get my moneys worth after being on that 6 month wait list early this year xD I havent noticed any distortion with my adapter, but upgrading from composite on the xbox or component on a ps2. It looks better than gamecube games out of a wii u so im happy lol. Tho i have issue with some widescreen games with the chimeric adapter. My tv doesnt seem to like to register anamorphic widescreen over hdmi. It sees that it should display 16:9 but wont display it right. Even when i can make it it cuts off just a tiny bit of the top and bottom.
Hey Adam and anyone else reading this what kind of capture card do you use for og Xbox? I use el gato hd60 s+, chimeric hdmi adapter, and mclassic but the quality is not good imo.
If it was plug and play I'd be all over this, the price and process to do all of this compared to the outcome isn’t worth it for me, the end picture honestly doesn’t look drastically better to justify this stuff
The Gamecube does not output a component signal it outputs a raw digital signal which a chip in the cable then converts the signal into a component signal, this is why you don't need to hard mod the console to get an HDMI output but just buy one of the adapters that have come out over the last few years.
@@AdamKoralik I don't care what you've been told the GC does not output a component signal full stop it outputs a digital signal and requires a converter to change it to component. The modern HDMI adapters use an open source FPGA design to replicate the function of the chip embedded in the GC component cable plug to replicate the function only instead of converting it to component it converts it to the HDMI protocol with the correct handshake. New component cables are also being developed(might be out by now) but they are trickier because of the nature of accurately transmitting/timing such a signal via an analogue transmission standard, this is why your third party Xbox components don't work properly.
5:40 "the fault of the creator!?" You make it sound like the existence of Mr. Chimeric of Albuquerque, NM is a bad thing, and such a savage statement would be fine if you were talking about me because I'm so used to hearing it. But this fine human being is a physicist who contributes to society and more importantly, the retro gaming community as a whole
Hey Adam! Um. I came here, Cause it's been 5 years since I watched the Game Society Pimps at all. And I just started startimg watching them again. They also just released a teaser trailer for the finale of Skyrim for Pimps. So did you leave and do you plan on ever returning?
So Adam just to clarify is this a better option against using a HDMI Adapter + Mclassic? I'm personally having a blast using the latter option and almost every game I throw at it + emulation looks amazing quality wise.
Merry Christmas, Adam! Any chance you might give the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI adapter a look sometime? It's been generating a lot of positive buzz on the original Xbox subreddit.
@@AdamKoralik Cool! So far, the consensus seems to be that it’s a definite step up from the Pound cable (though not quite at the level of the Chimeric). The only caveat is that it there have been some sound issues when using it with 1.0 motherboards.
Love my Xbox, its unmodded. LIke not even the clock cap removal. I like the idea of having an xbox still be original, maybe it's time to get a 2nd Xbox, mod it and do this. OR maybe i'll just play more Sega Genesis.
I have a moded OG Xbox and is run it on HD, but to be honest i think i like how the games looks with AV on a CRT, is a matter of preferences i think, i have always found the old games get too much "cleaned" in HD, even when there are now ways of having some kind of anti-aliasing on them, seems like old games needs some mud filther, some mist or foggy filther to give the proper look, scanlines are not enough, but yes the OG Xbox have games that are really kinda HD generation 0.5, for example Thief, Splinter cell, Doom 3 and Riddick, Dead or Alive 3 too, i mean those games look like another generation different than anything on ps2 and gamecube.,... but i still like the games of that generation on CRT
@@testvideo44 It more the capture process than the game unfortunately. One of the many reasons I hate capturing stuff. It always creates problems, especially with videos like this.

To this day, I still haven't acquired an OG XBox and despite every man's crush on Halle Berry, _Catwoman_ hasn't quite compelled me to go out and get one :(
I got the pound one and it's pretty damn good on my 65 inch flat sceen 4k samsung. I was curious about getting this set up but having to plug it into the tv directly killed it for me... I have space issues bad enough as it is and don't want to have to deal with it not being on my switch board.

Now all those 720p xbox games will look extra crispy clear.
Hey just saw this video and looked they have it bundled now
Before I finish the video, I had the XBOX2HDMI by Teknemesis..
I waited on the list for the chimeric adapter this year. I was number 69 on the list so i got it this summer.
@@Di3mondDud3 They’re not bad but mine has interference which caused the jail bars. Tried two Xboxes and different TVs with the same issue. Now I get a slightly better image using the oem component with the TINK.
I really do want to throw HDMI on a bunch of things, but man is it pricy to do so.
I have component for the Xbox at least.
what component cables do you use?
I've had a hard time finding ones that actually work and the oem is so expensive.
@@Henry_L I have a Microsoft component box thing.
1:47 "not a big deal!?" R.I.P to the homies who want separate audio outputs (analog stereo or S/PDIF) via OEM HD AV pack or XBox2Wii PRO version
I know it’s not related to the content of this video, but are you gonna do an 8th game generation recap series at some point?
When the Switch ends.
@@AdamKoralik sounds good
I really want to play Burnout 3 and Sports OG Xbox games on Xbox One
Great video, as always. Is something like this being worked on for the PS2 that you know of? That's the console that needs some HDMI modding.
It's good enough for me and for the amount I time I play them.\
I actually just sold my GameCube component cables for $400, can't believe someone would pay that amount but they did. Got the Prism adapter it's more modern anyway.
The component cables are super valuable to people with ED CRTs. Which...is huge for the Smash community.
@@AdamKoralik Good thought!
Wouldn't be surprised if the mclassic helps with the hdmi switch vs direct to TV issue as well.
It contains an HDMI repeater, so it should.
My hope is one day there will be a solution like this for ps2 instead of a component to hdmi
The GOAT...er...CAT....
I see everyone asking where the final 6th gen console, PS2 HDMI mod is.
I'm here wondering where the Samsung Nuon HDMI coming out
THIS. ^^^^^
Looks cool, but my component looks good, and most of my fave games run on 4k60 on XSX backwards compat.
I was asking if any PAL exclusives supported 576i to see if the HD+ would generate a 576p signal.
@@AdamKoralik All PAL games ran in 576i. If they are converted to 480p on soft modded NTSC Xbox, I wasn't aware.
Well that's not true, even the region free ones like Gene Troopers don't. Perhaps they adapter to being on an NTSC console. I don't know.
Never even heard of it to be honest.
After your last video I picked up a Xbox OG Halo Edition, to play Oddworld Stranger's Wrath. And I was wondering about HDMI options. Thank you!
How does it compare to the retrotink 5x?
It's better.
Tempting... Only issue is that I still have multiple consoles using the retrotink 5x anyway.
@@tompaquette7138 Guessing you're using a component switch box? Be careful with those, a lot of them create image signal quality degradation.
@@AdamKoralik I am the Phillips hd 4x1 switch, I've been impressed with it, can't complain.
Rolling ay...? I think I have that.
I would recommend getting it from Stone Age Gamer, vs the original author, cause there was a lot of sketchiness with shipping.
Completely off topic but I’ve just found out the physical copy of Halo Infinite WON’T play before the release date. MS are blocking it from being played until release, even if you try and install it offline.
I always wondered why we couldn't get HDMI out of the already existing AV out port, since it can go up to 1080i. That would be pretty good no?
I take it you commented before watching.
That seems pretty cool.
Someday ill splurge for one of these internal hdmi mod. But im lucky enough to have the chimeric adapter.
I need to get my moneys worth after being on that 6 month wait list early this year xD
I havent noticed any distortion with my adapter, but upgrading from composite on the xbox or component on a ps2.
You said before the monster component cables were as good as the Microsoft ones right?
Yeah, I think so.
Remember keep it at 720p, works the best
Im 1,588 on the Chimeric Systems list. 2030 Ill be getting mine.
I see you finally upgraded your tv
That was like four years ago son.
Does this mod fix any of the issues the 1.6 has with certain games running in 480p?
Would the official component cables look better on a 480i locked console (Australian) compared to third party ones? Or is there no point?
It would be mostly pointless. I suggest modding the console and unlocking the high definition modes.
So those of us who have the original OEM component cables can just stick to them than?
I'm saying, this is better.
watching this video in 240p
Hey Adam and anyone else reading this what kind of capture card do you use for og Xbox? I use el gato hd60 s+, chimeric hdmi adapter, and mclassic but the quality is not good imo.
Currently I'm using a Flint 4KP Plus, but I'm not super happy with it any more.
Everything I've been told about how the GameCube works says that's not true.
@@AdamKoralik
I don't care what you've been told the GC does not output a component signal full stop it outputs a digital signal and requires a converter to change it to component.
What about a comparison to the XBOX VGA Cables
I don't recall the original Xbox even having VGA cables.
Anyone out there have experience with both the ms adv hd pack and hd+? Wondering how different the image quality is between the two. Thanks!
If this is connected to a HD CRT do the light gun games still work?
Good question, I don't know. I'd assume so.
Oh I left in January of 2019, no I won't be back.
Do these work in PAL regions as well? I currently live in the UK and interested in buying one from Stone age gamer.
Honestly, I don't remember unfortunately.
I have a question how many different models of the original Xbox are there ? Like is it the same motherboard for the entire lifespan of the console?
There's a few, but to be honest I'm not an expert on that. Generally the one to avoid is the 1.6.
1.0
1.1
1.2
1.3
1.4
1.5
1.6
Would this be a good call if I have a retrotink 5x with decent component cables?
It's an upgrade for sure, but it depends on how much it's worth to you.
So Adam just to clarify is this a better option against using a HDMI Adapter + Mclassic? I'm personally having a blast using the latter option and almost every game I throw at it + emulation looks amazing quality wise.
Oh definitely, technologically yes. Financial and personal value is up the user though.
17:30 it's almost as if there's HDCP like the PS3 👀
Merry Christmas, Adam! Any chance you might give the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI adapter a look sometime? It's been generating a lot of positive buzz on the original Xbox subreddit.
I'd be willing to check it out.
@@AdamKoralik Cool! So far, the consensus seems to be that it’s a definite step up from the Pound cable (though not quite at the level of the Chimeric).
The only caveat is that it there have been some sound issues when using it with 1.0 motherboards.
How can I get that done if I'm in jolly old England hey squire
Love my Xbox, its unmodded. LIke not even the clock cap removal. I like the idea of having an xbox still be original, maybe it's time to get a 2nd Xbox, mod it and do this. OR maybe i'll just play more Sega Genesis.
I got my chimeric in 3 weeks I think so they are around
I love this kind of mods tho, even tho I like og hardware but it is still cool!
They need to build mClassic technology into the HDMI mods...
Adam, have you compared OG Xbox HDMI Mod with Xbox 360 BC? Is COMPONENT + RETRO TINK 5X better than HDMI mod?
Well, one is an emulator so it's a bit different.
so my PAL xbox does not have a HD mode? will it then make a difference if i get the hD+ if i have a pal or us console?
Standard no, though once they're modded it doesn't matter, it gets unlocked.
All the footage was quite dark, I would have liked to have seen a brighter game playing.
I'll tell my capture device to work differently.
