Like I'm sure many other keyboard warriors like me needlessly correcting you, The European launch PS3s weren't just emulation, they were a weird mix of both some emulation and real PS2 hardware inside the PS3 PS3 models are CECH*, the * being the generation I guess The model A is what you have, it has an entire PS2 inside it and is 99.9% ps2 compatible, since it basically is one The model B was the same, but without wifi and less space The model C was what we got in Europe and other PAL territories, it didn't come out in NTSC land. The model C has the real PlayStation 2 hardware inside it, except for the PS2's emotion engine CPU. Instead the powerful PS3 cell CPU would emulate the PS2's CPU so it uses what's called partial emulation. These are like 95% PS2 compatible (and some people argue they are better for PS2 than the model A and B since the performance of the emulated ps2 CPU is sometimes faster then the real thing lol). We didn't get the model A or B in Europe unfortunately, only the C The model D got axed before release The model E is the emulation one you're thinking of in this video, with the 80gb HDD. This one is only around 80% ps2 compatible and has issues and such from my understanding. The model F also got cancelled before release The model G had no PS2 hardware or software emulation and 0% ps2 compatibility, and had the cost cuttings of two USB ports and no card readers and no chrome trim, but interestingly still has the original PS3 hardware the earlier ones had, just lacking PS2 essentially The model H and later are very redesigned inside, using revised PS3 hardware, and have the ports on the left rather than the right, have only 16mb of internal storage, while the ones before all had 256mb of storage (and at one point could be used without a hard drive!), and many other cost cutting things. No more ps2 :( but yeah the European model C was partial emulation, partial real hardware. Far better than fully emulated, tho not the best. The model A and B still remain the best, and we didn't get them unfortunately :')
One good thing about the fat PS3 is that even if they do die we now know what causes it and it's relatively easy to fix if you can solder. I already repaired my 40GB PS3 and it was so nostalgic seeing it come back to life with all the games the way I had them. If you are interested to learn about it search for NEC/TOKIN capacitor repair, it's essentially a couple faulty capacitors that cause the console to die in most cases.
Yeah of course it could be something else that fails, as in any device. But in a lot of cases that was the cause for it. Problem is that a lot of people did that stupid solution were you put your motherboard into an oven, which caused more wear on the poor consoles. Eventually all hardware will die but this is a cheap fix that's worth trying at least.
Yeah while not all YLOD are because of the NEC caps, it's great since it is a large majority of them, and being relatively easy to do and a lasting fix is great :)
@The tricky tick Actually, if RSX die you still can replace it with one form a newer model, on better transistor node аnd add mod chip to boot it again. So even if your OG PS3 BC die and reballing didn't work you have an option. And those ps3 are no longer widely available, so at some point we will have to start transplant RSXs "Artificial" on youtube have a video about it
Ah, I remember that first year of PS3. There were very few PS3 games at the time, but I didn't mind since it was backwards compatible and I had skipped most of the previous gen. I picked up Resident Evil 4, FF XII, God of War I and II, Metal Gear Solid III...all for cheap at that point. For me there was no game drought because there were so many games to play until the PS3 titles started to pick up steam.
I recently got my hands on a couple of fat PS3's that were used for software development and never touched the Internet or any updates and were sitting in a cabinet since 2008. I pulled those HDDs out and slapped some 500GB SSDs and put CFW on them...then I loaded up that SSD so quick...had to get a USB drive for smaller games. // Due to being a broke college student and later getting a 360 instead, I have an entire backlog of PS3 games I get to enjoy.
I've had my hacked PS3 for about 3 or 4 years, so I've had quite a bit of time to figure the system inside and out. I've had no issue using external drives for PS3 games in either ISO or folder format. They run about the same as my internal 1TB. I have a 500GB Goflex drive formatted to FAT32 with one USB connection. There were no power problems. Also wanted you to know, I've used burned discs when ripping PS2 ISOs to my PS3 with no problems. You can also customize the PS3 boot up. I replaced the EvilNat boot up with the original 2006 boot up and sounds. Also restored the original game boot screen after selecting PS3 software.
I have a hacked PS3 slim, it is pretty cool. I use it to play PS2 ISOs on mine and most games run pretty well without issues. I also put an SSD inside mine for the same reasons you said.
@@bbay1977 if im not mistaken, you can just run ps2 isos that are: 1- on the internal hard drive 2- inside the PS2ISO folder 3- encrypted 4- after installing a ps2 loader compatible with your CFW (it tends to be hen on slim and superslim models) so, many more steps than psx games, and a bit more time consuming, but in my opinion is worth it 💕 and the convenience in the longterm is just the best 🥰
@@agata-1337 Okay thanks for the information. I just put the project on the back burner till I found more information out on it but then forgot all about it with all the projects I have here. I will revisit it though for sure. I have tons of PS2, PS3 and PS1 games. Just was trying to figure out the best way to store them in one location. Thanks
Webmans most important feature is manually set the fan speed when reaching threshold over certain temperature. Also I read somewhere that the YLOD could happen if you turn off the ps3 right after gaming session, and therefore the fans cannot cool down the system and it overheats. I leave my on for one hour afterwards just to be safe, with the power save 1 hour feature.
@@fernandomartinez4486 well, I thought that was crazy as well at first - but actually the reason it's 1 hour is because that's the shortest time before the PS3 will automatically shut down using the Power Save feature. So basically, the fan only really needs to run for probably 5 - 10 minutes after you're done playing a game for the system to go back to a normal temperature
Did my first Deep Clean to my PS4, replaced the thermal paste, clean/vacuum the dust and clean the fans with the microfiber cloth,Q-Tips and 91% isopropyl alcohol. I legit can't hear my PS4 anymore and I'm happy about it. Also, putting it back together took an hour. Tip: don't deep clean electronics while high af. P.S. I used Artic MX4 thermal paste
When Webman is not recognizing the game, try entering the Webman browser and checking the games tab in there. I find that I can launch newly added games from there even if its not showing in the games folder yet. Great vid as always!
I use this kind of stuff to backup the phisical games as isos on the computer to check if the discs are ok. also, for preservation. a hacked ps3 allows you to install the patches from other sources. sooner or later the servers will be offline so even if you have the disc you'll have a buggy or incomplete game. we are lucky the community does more for preservation than the companies themselves.
Thank you Adam for the amazing video, as always, I really enjoyed it ! I use one of my PS3s (a hacked Fat model) only for digital PS3 games and import PS3 stuff While I can technically use it for PS2 games too, I still prefer using my PS2 with a 32" CRT for an authentic experience ! But not everyone have or want a CRT nowadays, so indeed, a modded PS3 is the best way to play PS2 games on modern TVs.
The reliability of an SSD is a good enough reason to swap to one.I went the performance route with my CECHE01 and got a 1TB firecuda solid state hybrid drive.CPU and RSX have been delidded with new pastes, CFW with a custom fan curve, coolermaster laptop cooler underneath as a nice safeguard with some aluminum riser feet.
@@servantbyday it's still audible but doesn't ramp up like crazy since it stays at a consistent lower speed with the fan curve, the console fans volume is pretty much matched with the laptop cooler. The RSX hasn't exceeded 67 degrees Celsius since all these mods combined. Also the SSHD's flash storage helps benefit in faster and snappier OS features like XMB and its thumbnails or MMOs file explorer etc.
As usual great vid. I’m still rockin my ps3 super slim for the same reason you got the ssd, I want my console to last a long time and the most common problem I’ve seen on ps3s are broken disc mechanisms so take away that by getting the super slim.
@@BabaWahidSafi I would say the 360 was better in my opinion thought it had a lot better games plus now in the future we can play 360 games enchanced on series x you can’t do that with PS3 games though but I will say ps4 definitely had better games than Xbox one
Hello Adam, I have a PS3 with CFW, I have experienced the same problem with PAL PS1 games, the solution that I found was: 1) Use Iris Manager to launch them (IrisMan). or 2) After you get the message "you cannot play this game at the current video output", if you go to screen settings on the XMB, you'll notice that instead of the usual 480p 720p, etc options, now you have 576p instead of 480p, then if you uncheck all boxes and leave marked only the 576p, if you go and try to launch the PAL PS1 game again, now it will work.
I tried that, didn't work. However, did come up with another step. If you check the PS2 upscaling feature in the game settings menu, you can disable the upscaling. When I did that, it worked. Wish I had known that before the video though.
@@AdamKoralik I see, interesting. But did you try Iris Manager? It always works for me, to launch PAL PS1 games. (Although you have to select the memory card in the Iris Man menu before, because if you don't then you can't enable the memory cards from the PS3 menu in-game).
Since I got a ps2 with standard AV output ,I wasn't impressed enough until I purchased that component cable you talked about earlier in your videos , huge investment for a slight difference , but definitely worth it .Good job mate !
That glitch about empty space is not actually a glitch. When you are deleting something you need to let console do it for a minute or two. It needs to be idle with multiman loaded ( mmc... software ) or in main dashboard. When it is done deleting it will refresh page so you will know it finished. Same with ftp, it needs a minute or two to delete files. Since you got your games ripped in iso format it might take longer. I recommend using copy function. It just creates folder and copy data from disc into that folder, and its faster, loads better.
Just got a 20gb model myself. That Delid process is scarry as hell. I'll tell you though, you're happy when you see those thermals. My fan speed before the Delid was 60%-80%, in game to maintain 60c. After the Delid, it dropped down to 30%-50% to maintain 55c. Regardless, It's a loud son of a gun at any of those fan speeds. The peace of mind and a pair of headphones is my cure for the fan noise.
That's new to me, i knew that first PS3 versions had PS2 hardware but i thought they would just play the same as PS2 not better. It would be nice to see a comparison of modded PS2 with HDMI board or retrotink vs this PS3, also i wonder how PSone games doing do they improve as well or not.
I have 2 Playstation 3s for this reason. I have my original launch 60gb model I use only for PS2 games and a super slim I use for PS3 games. Both have been upgraded to a WD blue 1tb SSD. Worth it because just like you said less moving parts it better. Great video as always!
28:23 I've never owned a hacked PS3 before, but a hacked Vita has something similar called PKGj. Personally, I only used it to download digital copies of games that I owned physically. I never pirated games I did not own. I did it out of convenience, nowadays I just dump the card's contents.
@2:55 I have a modded CECHA01 with a 2TB Samsung EVO SSD. After shrinking the SSD size I get a total of 1.525TB of usable space on my PS3. It's 100% stable and 100% runs correctly as far as I can tell. I'd be interested to know how the video maker identified that his system was no longer stable.
Also I'm glad I'm not the only one that experienced the PS3 not recognizing ripped PS3 ISO's! It took me (I'm not kidding either) 10+ whole reboots for my PlayStation 3 to find Modern Warfare 3 ISO, and most of the time the console would freak out and completely crash trying to load the game, but now it seems to work.
Very cool. Since you mentioned doing potential comparison video of ps2 games, I’d love to see a comparison of a ps2 game on a ps2 w component to the Retrotink 5x vs the hacked PS3. Great video as always. Giving me ideas!
Hi! The launch Model of the PS3 in Europe was a bit weird, the PS3 had either the PS2 CPU or GPU (I can't remember which) and the other chip was emulated. While this means it does have much better compatibility than full software emulation, it doesn't support all PS2 games. This also means un-modded Launch PS3s in Europe can also play PS2 games, unlike the consoles that software emulate which can't play ps2 games anymore. Hopefully, this clarifies the info about EU launch PS3s :) Edit: For some reason, I put RSX instead of GPU
Yeah .. the launch model in Europe was the CECHC0x models which only had the PS2 GPU, they also removed the PS2 32MB RAMBUS memory. THE PS" CPU was emulated by the PS3 CPU
I have a CECHC04 with the PS2 GPU and the compatibility from known lists is around 90%, the real problem is the glitches. Hitman Contracts or Ratchet & Clank have framerate problems and Burnout 2 has a minor graphical bug. Any PS2 game that I tried to run works though, just expect some bugs in a couple of them. This is where converting your PS2 discs into PKGs with config files helps, some of them can be fixed. Sort of like the PS2 compatibility on jailbroken PS4s, you can make over 500 games playable thanks to hacky code. Anyway, I much prefer to use my modded PS2 instead so I don't have to worry about the PS3 going toast.
I'm getting a PS3 pretty soon. It's down to either the *CECHBxx* or *CECHAxx* models for full compatibility with PS2. I guess the *CECHBxx* is the 20GB launch model which is all black, lacks Wi-Fi capabilities and the flash memory ports, like SD cards. The USB ports can make up for the flash memory ports such as a PS3 to PS2 memory card adapter. And it also seems there are workarounds or upgrades available to the console for giving it Wi-Fi capabilities. Of course there's always an Ethernet cable. Then the CECHA** is the more familiar 60GB black model with the chrome accent, Wi-Fi capabilities and flash memory support. The common aesthetic giveaway to determine whether the PS3 is fully backwards compatible with the PS2 is the 4 USB ports. I like the look of the all black launch model, so if I find a good deal, I'm gonna shoot for that. *Edit:* I feel I should clarify that even though the *CECHBxx* models aren't listed to support flash memory ports, that doesn't mean their mass storage of the standard HDD can't be "upgraded" to support SSDs (a form of flash memory) as Adam showed in this video, because they can be. So, that shouldn't be viewed as a roadblock. If I'm correct Adam, I'm betting you were showing off a hacked *CECHAxx* model given it's black and chrome color scheme in addition to it's backwards compatibility. *Source:* en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_models *This reddit post was helpful too:* www.reddit.com/r/PS3/comments/j0otyq/cechb_vs_cechace_differences/?
Watch out before you decide to get a hackable PS3 for PS3 games. The super slims and the later slims can't run CFW. They can still run backups of games and do other things with HEN, but it's more limited. The most recent and probably best models for running CFW are the CECH25XX made before 2011. I just picked up one a few months ago so did some research recently. Anyway, love the videos.
I have a modded ps3 slim that i purchased last year that came with a 1tb hdd. I only played it maybe a few hours and it started to overheat. I repasted it thinking it would work and it instantly overheated. that's when I googled and found out that I needed to delid the CPU and GPU and that was a process. It sat for almost a year until i finally decided that i was either going to fix it or break it. So i ended up fixing it by deliding the CPU and GPU and now it works perfectly. It works so good that you can hardly hear the fans now. However during this last year I found out that most of the games i was playing are playable on the RPCS3 emulator and run great on my 9900k at 4k 60fps upscaled. So i mostly play them that way now. but at least it works.
Same here though, the only reason I'd ever do this myself is for a console that plays 720P PS2 games, I am just fine with my PS3 that plays all my PS3 games, with mClassic, but my PS2 games just do not look as nice as I think they could, since all I've got for this on a 4K screen is RetroTink Pro and mClassic for my PS2 titles as it stands.
That's simply not true. To quote another user: Here in Europe our Launch PS3 was running PS2 games only partly by emulation since there was still the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) Build in, and the Emotion Engine was handled by the CELL CPU. The difference is the Japanese/American launch units used 100% hardware, the European units were a mix, like our 80 GB PS3s.
I play my PS3 game disk image files through my LAN, which are stored on my PC upstairs and any PS3 games that need to install files to the PS3's local hard drive can do so without the PS3 needing to have a copy of the iso as well (thus potentially doubling up the space needed on your local PS3 hard drive). It also means you can have as large a library you want on your PC with unlimted amounts of disk storage (upto you how much you can afford or already have spare) which is accessible from any modded PS3 in your house with an ethernet connection on your local network (wireless not recommended). This method for me works brilliantly and all my games work fine using CFW 4.84 (which was the latest version when I did the softmod). I think you also need any PS3 game disk in the PS3 disk drive to get it to see it has a disk in its drive and to boot any game image, but it doesn't matter which game disk it is (even a copied disk will do it if burnt correctly). To solve the updated hard drive storage space issue, you have to delete files in a particular folder (I can't remember which folder right now), which stores this data and when you reboot, it updates the storage space for you, but leaving mmCM on for a few minutes idly can tell you your updated storage space too, I think.
I picked up a slim PS3 about 2 weeks ago and softmodded it and already I've reached nearly full capacity of the 160gb hard drive with just 7 ps3 and 6 ps2 games. Guess I'll be upgrading to a 1tb drive in the new year
I have some 80s computers with their original drivers, I keep my collection the most purist I can, while capable of running, and the HD drivers are still working. They aren't so unreliable as people claim. If you keep them away from dusty they will last for a long time, I don't claim they are more reliable than SSDs, but they aren't so fragile either.
I loathe mechanical drives. The countless numbers of them I've had die on me for no apparent reason makes me wish I could afford to viable never allow one in my home. But...alas, can not.
@@AdamKoralik I had so few problems with hard drives... Most of the ones I had problems were old ones that people didn't take good care of and some consumer graded modern ones. For my archives I prefer to use tape. Yes I have I server tape system, I collect computers XD. But when I need instant access to some archive I tend to use server graded HDs in a NAS server. They are more expensive, but still cheaper than an SSD. So my experience with modern consumer HDs are limited to my daily driver.
@@AdamKoralik I never wanted to sound like you should do as I do. Or even denying your experience, I just don't think well made HDs are as bad as people think and maybe some bad experiences are due a decline in the fabrication quality. I remember a particularly bad year were almost all brands of HDs had problems. It was a problem in one production line in China. If you look up good SSD reviews you will notice the quality of the SSDs are declining too... They are using cheaper and cheaper components. Unfortunately the longevity of an HD are more dependent on the production quality. But a good HD, can last for a long time.
Another big difference between mechanical and SSDs drives it's that mechanical ones usually gives you warnings like when they are about to fail for example clicking noises or files get corrupted unable to open blah blah...in contrast the SSD dies without a warning...boom it's done ...won't boot it doesn't get detected bye bye-bye
Just gave your video the 1k like brother! I thought I had liked it when I first watched it but I guess I had forgotten. But thanks for the video. Good content
By the way Adam if you ever get bored you should try using the mClassic with this thing. I used to have it on mine but switching from PS3 video output to PS2 games really messed with the mClassic. I ended up taking it off. I'm curious if you can figure out what's going on.
Hi Adam , I’ve got 2 original European ps3 phats and both play every ps1 and ps2 games I throw at them , both were bought at the launch for my twins, and somehow I’ve ended up with them both, maybe after I got them ps4s at launch 🚀 they gave me them to ease their consciences lol 😂, I still play them to this day. Niiiiiiiiiiice video Adam. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
I never said they don't play PS2 games, I said they're emulated instead of using full hardware, or at least partially emulated. To quote another user: Here in Europe our Launch PS3 was running PS2 games only partly by emulation since there was still the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) Build in, and the Emotion Engine was handled by the CELL CPU.
It's a good thing that u did get an SSD like I did. I didn't hack mine but a HD will eventually give out. Radicalreggie had like 2 of them and they gave out. I have like 300 games bought and around 70+ physical games with DLC and I still have 400+ GBs left.
Another note worthy feature of Multiman (mmcm) is it has a setting to change the PS3 region code (a,b,c) for blu-rays. Since you travel a lot and have picked up movies on a few trips, I thought it would be helpful to know. This feature is the predominate reason why I modded my PS3 to begin with and why it's my primary blu-ray player in my living room. Also, the PS3 hook up to an mclassic upscales the blu-rays to 4k, and does a cleaner job at it than the PS4 and my Sony 4k player.
@@AdamKoralik I know the ones from Umbrella are "Region B", but just play all region. Things from Eureka, 88 Films, and Arrow UK marked B definitely won't play on a US player.
One issue with ps2 on ps3 no matter how you do it, it has lag due to how the ps3 handles the interlaced video which most the ps2 library outputs. Mostly fighting game nerds trying to play a classic like CVS2 will notice lol.
That's why I would like the use the RetroTink 4K to enhance PS2 and PS1 playback even more than what the PS3 is capable of by itself. I want all of my PS1 and PS2 games to run in 16:9 and deinterlaced all of the time. Whether running on the PS2 hardware or the ps2_netemu through Webman.
The best way to prevent failure on this console is to turn off the main power from the back. Leaving it on standby leaves the PSU constantly ON. And since you can fry an egg on the PSU, it means the PS3 will cook itself on standby.
That's bananas. I have three ps2s and never thought to get the big chonkey boi Ps3 to play ps2 games. But that system is still one that I'll gladly play on a CRT
The webMAN thing you're mentioning where the games don't show up - you need to scan for content, preferably this is done manually. You just have to select the option "Refresh webMAN Games & XMB" and it's fine. Or do it from the web server, whatever suits your fancy :) (you can connect to your PS3 from a web browser, hence the name *web* MAN hehe) For the "install data" you can do a symbolic link (aka shadow copy in multiMAN) and it saves space that way.
The Wii U ran games directly of of Bluray based Discs. The PS3s Drive was just a 2x Drive and also its only CLV (like the PS2 and PS1) wich meant that the discs had to be spun at different speeds depending on where the laser is. On Wii U the disc spins at 6x in CAV Mode wich meant that not only bandwidth but also access times were much faster because the disc always spun at the same speed and the laser didn‘t have to wait for the disc to reach the appropriate speed each time it moved. (Because of this CLV and CAV Drives make much different noises when seeking) CAV vs CLV was also the Reason Xbox 360 ran almost all games directly from disc, even though the drives average bandwidth wasn‘t higher and also why games on the original Xbox and Gamecube generally loaded much faster than PS2. CAV = constant angular velocity CLV = constant linear velocity
The Wii U doesn't use traditional Blu-Ray, I said the same in the past and had a million people pointing out that it wasn't true this that and the other.
@@AdamKoralik well the Wii U Discs are basically „unlicensed“ „off Brand“ Bluray Discs. In that they use mostly the same technology but without any of the associated licenses. Just like Xbox One and Series X Discs. (Which is why only Playstation Discs have the Bluray Logo on them) The Same way the Gamecube, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360 used „unlicensed“ Versions of DVD. So yes „technically“ it isn‘t Bluray. Interestingly, some PS4 games sort of run of the Disc while they are being Installed and actually grab the files immediately from the Disc if that particular File hasn‘t been installed already. There aren‘t that many but those games can be launched within seconds of putting the disc in. (Digimon World: Next Order for Example). Both the Xbox One and PS4 have 6x CAV Drives to enable this, although most games don‘t take advantage of this. But knowing and caring about these miniscule and mostly irrelevant details is what we nerds do 😅
I think SSDs actually give a substantial benefit. SSDs typically get a maximum speed of 550MiB/s. The PS3's SATA-II is 3Gbps or around 375MiB/s maximum. So, it's true you can't use the full max speed of an SSD. Aside from the obvious- things you mention, like better seek times, the thing is a mechanical hard drive tops out at around 180MiB/s - in ideal conditions, which is around half the speed of the Bus that the SSDs would supposedly saturate, so you are still getting a pretty big boost in speed.
34:13 If I may make a suggestion, if you can acquire one, why not do a video comparing the performance of a hacked hardware-based backward compatible PS3 compares with a hacked partial-emulation backward compatible PS3? The partial-emulation models were all we got in PAL regions. Do PS2 games with compatibility issues play any better as an ISO rip? _Area 51_ is my favourite example of such, the PAL version crashes when I try to play it on my PAL partial-emulation PS3. Supposedly the NTSC version runs but is unplayable due to catastrophic frame stutter and lagging, while the hardware-based models play it fine. I'd be interested to see if the ripped version plays any better.
Nice definitely worth it I got 2 60gb ps3 one is hacked and the other is regular just so I can play online.plans on making other hacked console videos?
My PS3 in the UK is a 60GB model with PS2 support I got at midnight launch. It has the shiny silver trim (20GB/80GB models had a dull grey trim), liftable panel with compact flash/memory card slots and 4 USB ports. It got discontinued really quickly but it did launch in Europe. The 20GB and 80GB models came out right after. My friend got a 60GB model also for PS2 B/C but my sister got a 80GB later revision. I still have it for parts but it died when Fallout New Vegas came out. It has the 4 USB ports, memory card ports and says PAL on the back sticker.
To quote another user: Here in Europe our Launch PS3 was running PS2 games only partly by emulation since there was still the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) Build in, and the Emotion Engine was handled by the CELL CPU.
Im going to sound insane but the PS3 was the perfect machine released ahead of its time. $600 got you a Blu ray and DVD drive (~900 on its own), a PS2 and by extension PS1 (~250, with PS3 capable of higher resolutions and smoother visuals), multimedia applications with their corresponding card readers and enough USB ports to hook up other devices as needed, wireless internet capabilities right out of the box (cough Microsoft) and the ability to run the device as a PC through Linux on the early firmwares. Sony bungled it with lackluster launch games, the extreme newness of Blu Ray, and missing features, plus the idea of paying that much for a “games machine” was rightfully beyond rationale to most customers. Sony did win out but that horrid reveal was the ego shattering kick in the face they needed.
Sorry but no,but the blu ray worked better than most bluray players that aside all games were better on 360,better resolution and better frame rates, even tho it came a year earlier so no it wast ahead, but it was for me better than ps4 cuz it offered more originals games, ps4 are mostly remasters
I softmodded my 80GB PS3 to archive my bluray games (lost my PSN acc too, so who cares?) What I did is opening the BD drive via FTP on my computer and simply copy the contents. Holy moly... just to copy one of the discs - especially first party games like Uncharted - takes forever with that 10/100Mbit NIC inside the PS3. Still, it's much more versatile now than when it was unmodded.
I was on the fence about buying a backwards compatible PS3...but I'm definitely getting one after watching this! Did you ever figure out a work around for the PS1 PAL games?
Adam You are wrong, in Europe Sony release the PS3 60GB + 40GB, we didn't get the 20GB model which was released in Asia & North America. The PS3 60GB has the PS2 hardware built in + 4USB ports with all of the CF cards ports. Then we later go the 80GB PS3 which had the software emulation for the PS2, if you live in Europe you can buy a PS3 60GB which has everything built into it. This is the reason why PS3 60GB console are highly sort after in Europe and go for high prices on ebay here.
I am not wrong. This was elaborated on in the comments below. The launch European version of the PS3 uses a mixture of hardware and software emulation to run games, similar to our 80 GB model. The US/Japan got pure hardware models, at least initially.
Launch ps3 in UK was 4port ps2 compatible, I have two. Its very noisy once modded. Got a slim and modded that too for quieter operation :) love backing up my collection and running from hdd with all psn updates. Great video.

@@AdamKoralik they really did!!!!! . I had no idea until you said. Aww man. I was sold a lie all those years ago. I even saved extra for it and trashed my original ps2. What a knob head I was in my 20s. Damn it... Look like I need to back to Japan and start hunting.
Well, with that information about earlier ps3 in europe, which I didn't knew, maybe getting this or a slim is almost the same. I just hope someone somehow create a decent solution to get the ps2 to shine on a modern tv. I know it's hard, but maybe in the future we may have something. Dreaming is tax-free. I've thinking about getting a ps3 lately and as soon as I can find a nice deal, I may buy one. There's several ps3 games I want to play and even if just a few ps2 games work well, it's not a complete loss. Nice video, Adam, another great one. For everything ps2, I'm here :D
@@AdamKoralik lol in all seriousness though i think itd be interesting to see how it compares with a ps2 with hdretrovison cables into a retrotink 5x. the motion adaptive deinterlacing mode is soo nice
I can definitely 100% confirm that we actually had the 60GB launch PS3 model in Europe. In fact mine is one of them, which I bought in Italy at GameStop. Not sure why people believes that the 60GB launch PS3 never reached Europe. That is not true. And yes, it has PS2 games support. After that we had the 40GB model with software emulated PS2 support (quite poor in fact). Then the 80GB, which was the last FAT system in Europe.
We believe it because it's correct. This was elaborated on below. The issue isn't that you did or didn't get the 60 GB PS3, it's that yours was different. The US/Japanese one used pure hardware, the European one used a mix of hardware and emulation. It's like our 80 GB version.
@@AdamKoralik We had the 80GB one, and its support for PS2 games is not at all the same as the 60GB one. Mine has that support even after the firmware update that got rid of said PS2 compatibility. The result was that the 40GB and the 80GB lost that support. Again here in Europe. The 60GB still has it. I mean, I live here, I lived in Italy until I was 37 (now I am 48 and live in UK), I kind of know what I own and bought.
You can argue with me about it all you want, but it won't change objective reality man.
@@AdamKoralik What I said is that the 80GB, which my brother has, was not at all like our 60 GB. So I don't know why you are saying that our 60GB is like your 80GB. Did they sell a different 80GB over there in the USA? Our 80GB doesn't have the graphics synthesizer. So, to recap, here in Europe: The 40 GB, 80 GB (CECHL, CECHM, and CECHK) and 160 GB models have two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models and do not include multiple flash card readers, SACD support, or backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. This was due to the removal of "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU, which stripped the units of all PlayStation 2 based hardware. So I guess they really sold a different 80GB model in USA.
Sadly WebMan doesn't rip my PS2 discs even though my PS3 is a North American backwards compatible PS3! My console rips my PS3 discs seamlessly and installs the ISO's onto the HDD, and they're fully playable. Webman says it successfully rips the PS2 disc ISO but it's certainly not playable and my PS3 crashes every time! I've had this issue for quite a few months.
To quote another user: Here in Europe our Launch PS3 was running PS2 games only partly by emulation since there was still the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) Build in, and the Emotion Engine was handled by the CELL CPU.
@@AdamKoralik I'm pretty sure there is either a 40gb or 80gb but the 60gb definitely has PS2 hardware just same as the Japanese version. I thought you didn't like PS2 ? It's amazing I've had over 50 and need to pick one either this month or next.
@@AdamKoralik really ? I was in a cex and the manager said to someone that either the 40 or 80 version had emulation but that 60 was PS2 hardware. I guess I'll just stick to the actual PS2 hardware for now. Plus emulation on phones are nearly there. The adaptor for hd is good but nowhere near 720p man you must have a big house. You need it to be a collector I guess. Great episode by the way. I forgot to mention that. I've never seen a hacked PS3.
@@pauldoake6188 In Europe, the 60GB model was a CECHC which is the same "generation" as a North American CECHE (80GB). It contains the PS2 Graphics Synthesizer chip, but the rest of the duties are emulated by the PS3's Cell processor, and is therefore known as "partially emulated" or similar terms. Only the CECHA and CECHB versions (Japanese/North American 60GB/20GB respectively) have the complete EE+GS chip, which is the "full hardware" PS2 backward compatibility. Japan/NA never got the CECHC 60GB that Europe got, but Europe never got the CECHA/CECHB.
Need to correct you here (from the UK) Our European 60GB CECHC03 Launch PS3 model was Partial Software Emulation and Part Hardware Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games. It has the Graphics Synthesizer Chip but not the Emotion Engine PS2 CPU. It also performed fine but not perfectly with some games (e.g. Tekken Tag Tournament ran in slow motion). Your 80GB model was pretty much the same as our 60GB model with 4 USB Ports and Part Software Part Hardware Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games. I also have a CECHA00 Japanese Launch PS3 with Custom Firmware on it and it plays my PAL PS1 games with no issue.
@@AdamKoralik Apologies if that came across wrong, it sounded like you were suggesting our European Model only did Emulation and not a Hybrid of GS and Emulation.
@@AdamKoralik Just a suggestion RE PAL PS1 Games, does your TV Support 1080p at 50hz? Mine does hence it working for me with my CECHA00. If yours doesn't, that might be why you get the Video Mode Error.

Don't listen to people who hate on SSDs in a PS3. While they're right in that the maximum transfer speed isn't really different due to the limitations of SATA 1, SSDs will still have superior random seek speeds. Even the XMB alone loads icons way quicker with an SSD. Plus, like you mentioned, no moving parts. Most modern SSDs support their own garbage collection/TRIM, and costs aren't all that much more than a hard drive.
Hey, Adam! Shenmue 3 is free right now on the Epic Games Store! It will be free for just 24 hours. It would be great if you spread a word about it, maybe even with a video on your channel. The more people would get it, the sooner we'll get Shenmue 4!
great video. i recently hacked my ps3 as well so learning about a few of the homebrew apps was informative. i will say though, another great method for ps2 games would be to mod an actual FAT ps2 with free mcboot (i used a 2TB internal drive which is amazingly cool) and combine that with a retrotink 5X upscaler. that will give you the best ps2 compatibility and image quality (up to 1080p i believe) on a modern LED TV. this setup will possibly be more expensive? but not by much when you consider just how overpriced the (ps2 compatible) ps3's are these days... plus FAT ps2's are very reliable as compared to the launch ps3's. i still need to get myself a retrotink 5x but it is next on the list for sure.
Unfortunately, that solution isn't even close to being as good as this. While I love the RetroTink, it still has to work with the crappy source data it's been given. While this isn't perfect, it at least starts out waaaaaay better. In short, the PS2 plus a RetroTink is like a room that is messy, and the RetroTink is a vacuum. It'll help a lot, but won't do it all by itself. The PS3 is a room that is already completely clean, it's just more expensive to deal with because you had to hire a maid.
I've never used a hacked 3DS so I can't compare. I wouldn't describe them as hard to use, just slightly tedious to set up to your liking. But once it is, smooth sailing.
I have a modded 1tb phat bc ps3 and a modded ps3 slim that I just put that same ssd in. I compared the load times on both with the the last of us. The ssd made a huge difference.
Like I'm sure many other keyboard warriors like me needlessly correcting you,
The European launch PS3s weren't just emulation, they were a weird mix of both some emulation and real PS2 hardware inside the PS3
PS3 models are CECH*, the * being the generation I guess
The model A is what you have, it has an entire PS2 inside it and is 99.9% ps2 compatible, since it basically is one
The model B was the same, but without wifi and less space
The model C was what we got in Europe and other PAL territories, it didn't come out in NTSC land. We didn't get the model A or B in Europe unfortunately, only the C
The model D got axed before release
The model E is the emulation one you're thinking of in this video, with the 80gb HDD. This one is only around 80% ps2 compatible and has issues and such from my understanding.
The model F also got cancelled before release
The model G had no PS2 hardware or software emulation and 0% ps2 compatibility, and had the cost cuttings of two USB ports and no card readers and no chrome trim, but interestingly still has the original PS3 hardware the earlier ones had, just lacking PS2 essentially
The model H and later are very redesigned inside, using revised PS3 hardware, and have the ports on the left rather than the right, have only 16mb of internal storage, while the ones before all had 256mb of storage (and at one point could be used without a hard drive!), and many other cost cutting things. No more ps2 :(
but yeah the European model C was partial emulation, partial real hardware. Far better than fully emulated, tho not the best.
The model A and B still remain the best, and we didn't get them unfortunately :')
I actually prefer this kind of correction because you have actually have a case instead of the usual "we had 60 gb" which is not the issue.
This is the comment I was hoping to see. Thank you for breaking down how the many details were different. I found this most interesting!
In a way our PS3's still sucked because of the region locking on PS1/2 games so we stuck with 50hz for most games which is not even remotely good tbh.
Thank you, you just saved me a job 😆 you also explained the hybrid emulation far better than I would.
Fun fact, When it comes to playing PS2 games in HD with full screen and sharpening enabled, the full emulation E model tends to look a little sharper.
Whoa!
@The tricky tick True. You need to check the SYSCON readings to be more precise to see your issues.
And those ps3 are no longer widely available, so at some point we will have to start transplant RSXs
"Artificial" on youtube have a video about it
Ah, I remember that first year of PS3.
Do you run the PS2 isos from a external or from the internal drive?
@@bbay1977 if im not mistaken, you can just run ps2 isos that are:
1- on the internal hard drive
2- inside the PS2ISO folder
3- encrypted
4- after installing a ps2 loader compatible with your CFW (it tends to be hen on slim and superslim models)
so, many more steps than psx games, and a bit more time consuming, but in my opinion is worth it 💕
and the convenience in the longterm is just the best 🥰

Webmans most important feature is manually set the fan speed when reaching threshold over certain temperature. Also I read somewhere that the YLOD could happen if you turn off the ps3 right after gaming session, and therefore the fans cannot cool down the system and it overheats. I leave my on for one hour afterwards just to be safe, with the power save 1 hour feature.
It's insane that that's needed. Unfortunate.
Damn, you have to leave your ps3 on for 1 entire hour just to cool off? Sheeeeeit
@Ali Hendrickson it's a combination of bad design of the system and heating and capacitor problems
Just reload Mygames XMB. Is right under ther unmount disc option.
I use one of my PS3s (a hacked Fat model) only for digital PS3 games and import PS3 stuff
While I can technically use it for PS2 games too, I still prefer using my PS2 with a 32" CRT for an authentic experience !
But not everyone have or want a CRT nowadays, so indeed, a modded PS3 is the best way to play PS2 games on modern TVs.
The holy grail of PS3's. PS2 games look so damn good on it.

Is it not nearly as loud after making these modifications?

PS3 is my favorite console, but PS2 is my favorite to collect for.
The PS3 slim is also a great system to hack, better than I thought it would be, minus the PS2 full backwards compatibility
Thanks for the input on that drive, totally just ordered 1.
I have 2 Playstation 3s for this reason. I have my original launch 60gb model I use only for PS2 games and a super slim I use for PS3 games. Both have been upgraded to a WD blue 1tb SSD. Worth it because just like you said less moving parts it better. Great video as always!
27:10 lol, love how you pulled your sleeve over your hand just to add to the effect 😂. You nailed it!
you should definitely make a video showing the performance and picture quality of PS2 games on this PS3.
You'd have to ask the guy who did the mod.
Hopefully, this clarifies the info about EU launch PS3s :)
Edit: For some reason, I put RSX instead of GPU
Yeah .. the launch model in Europe was the CECHC0x models which only had the PS2 GPU, they also removed the PS2 32MB RAMBUS memory.

Modded PS3 is the best PlayStation system ever.
Not by a mile
@@sirmi9868 you must not own one.
I still need to play more of my PS3 Backlog. I would also install retroarch in that CFW PS3 as well.
7:47 Correct. We got a 60GB model software-based backwards compatible models of PS3s in PAL regions.
60GB model is partially software-based, only EE is emulated.
And plus the fat ps3 look better than the slim I wish they kept the spiderman font
I remember you from dc-talk, look at you now 10k views 1 day nice
Same here though, the only reason I'd ever do this myself is for a console that plays 720P PS2 games, I am just fine with my PS3 that plays all my PS3 games, with mClassic, but my PS2 games just do not look as nice as I think they could, since all I've got for this on a 4K screen is RetroTink Pro and mClassic for my PS2 titles as it stands.
Adam we did get the launch PS3 60 and 20 GB here in Europe with PS2 hardware inside with 4 USB ports and memory card readers.
@@itsasecrettoeverybody To each their own!
Dude!!!! Your hoodie is legendary !!!
Man u should make the spiral holes in the bottom so the ps3 cool correctly
By the way Adam if you ever get bored you should try using the mClassic with this thing. I used to have it on mine but switching from PS3 video output to PS2 games really messed with the mClassic. I ended up taking it off. I'm curious if you can figure out what's going on.
This video surprised me. I always thought you were against/not interested in playing games like this.
I've done many videos on hacked consoles and things like ODEs and Flashdrives. What makes you think I wouldn't want this?
@@AdamKoralik I always had the impression you preferred hardware as it was intended.

I do like import Blu-Rays, but I've never actually encountered one with region locks. They tend to say they are...but then run anyway.
@@AdamKoralik I know the ones from Umbrella are "Region B", but just play all region. Things from Eureka, 88 Films, and Arrow UK marked B definitely won't play on a US player.
@@emilyvilleneuve9315 I have a Region B Arrow release of 12 Monkeys, totally works on a US Blu-ray player.
Or do it from the web server, whatever suits your fancy :) (you can connect to your PS3 from a web browser, hence the name *web* MAN hehe)
For the "install data" you can do a symbolic link (aka shadow copy in multiMAN) and it saves space that way.
I remember playing Power Stone 2 when I was very little on the Dreamcast I'm not even sure how old I was
The Wii U ran games directly of of Bluray based Discs.
(Because of this CLV and CAV Drives make much different noises when seeking)
CAV vs CLV was also the Reason Xbox 360 ran almost all games directly from disc, even though the drives average bandwidth wasn‘t higher and also why games on the original Xbox and Gamecube generally loaded much faster than PS2.
CAV = constant angular velocity
CLV = constant linear velocity
(Which is why only Playstation Discs have the Bluray Logo on them)
The Same way the Gamecube, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360 used „unlicensed“ Versions of DVD.
You're my hero.
I followed Mr Mario and got my fat ps3 modded nice to see you do a video on it.
Nice definitely worth it I got 2 60gb ps3 one is hacked and the other is regular just so I can play online.plans on making other hacked console videos?
I've done a few like the 360 and Wii U.
*cough* Microsoft when the first version of the ps3 did not have the wifi. Only the most expensive launch model...... Yeah *cough* Sony too
Ahh. I remember buying a Japanese launch PS3 after launch from a shady guy from Clist.
Best decision ever!
I softmodded my 80GB PS3 to archive my bluray games (lost my PSN acc too, so who cares?)
What I did is opening the BD drive via FTP on my computer and simply copy the contents.
Yeah, there's a setting that fixes it
@@AdamKoralik if you do a follow up please show this setting 👍
Adam
You are wrong, in Europe Sony release the PS3 60GB + 40GB, we didn't get the 20GB model which was released in Asia & North America.
Yes, via a mixture of half emulation/hardware. The American/Japanese launch ones were pure hardware.

There's not much benefit from owning the earliest PAL PS3 models.
It has the most chance of YLOD not full BC and well do we need a 3?lol
I used to think it was gigantic. Then the PS5 came out.

@@AdamKoralik
We had the 80GB one, and its support for PS2 games is not at all the same as the 60GB one.
You can argue with me about it all you want, but it won't change objective reality man.
@@AdamKoralik
What I said is that the 80GB, which my brother has, was not at all like our 60 GB.
So I don't know why you are saying that our 60GB is like your 80GB.
Did they sell a different 80GB over there in the USA?
Our 80GB doesn't have the graphics synthesizer.
So, to recap, here in Europe:
The 40 GB, 80 GB (CECHL, CECHM, and CECHK) and 160 GB models have two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models and do not include multiple flash card readers, SACD support, or backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. This was due to the removal of "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU, which stripped the units of all PlayStation 2 based hardware.
So I guess they really sold a different 80GB model in USA.
wait so playing PS2 through my CRT with component cables isn't good enough anymore!?...dam
It's actually one of the best ways to play PS2. Games look so clean and vibrant on it.
We got the 60gb version in England with PS2 hardware in it. Cex now sells it.

Our European 60GB CECHC03 Launch PS3 model was Partial Software Emulation and Part Hardware Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games.
That's not a correction, we agree. The launch European unit didn't have the full hardware release unlike the US/Japanese version.

Most modern SSDs support their own garbage collection/TRIM, and costs aren't all that much more than a hard drive.

have you noticed PS3 games have been going up in price recently? Some games that were worth $15 CND 5 years ago are over $50 CND now.
That's mainly because of rarity of certain games or someone that falsely believes it's worth that much.
I was able to play Pal games to work on the PS3 slim
Hey Adam, you realize that the SSD is ...
just kidding, great video as always :D
Hey, Adam! Shenmue 3 is free right now on the Epic Games Store! It will be free for just 24 hours. It would be great if you spread a word about it, maybe even with a video on your channel. The more people would get it, the sooner we'll get Shenmue 4!
There is only a few CFW that will allow you to play burned discs; one of them is my favorite - Habib CFW version 4.81.
great video. i recently hacked my ps3 as well so learning about a few of the homebrew apps was informative.
i will say though, another great method for ps2 games would be to mod an actual FAT ps2 with free mcboot (i used a 2TB internal drive which is amazingly cool) and combine that with a retrotink 5X upscaler. that will give you the best ps2 compatibility and image quality (up to 1080p i believe) on a modern LED TV. this setup will possibly be more expensive? but not by much when you consider just how overpriced the (ps2 compatible) ps3's are these days... plus FAT ps2's are very reliable as compared to the launch ps3's. i still need to get myself a retrotink 5x but it is next on the list for sure.
You don't see many of these fat models today... They were very expensive and exclusive, just like turtles
Great vid, Adam. Is Multiman and Webman hard to use? Is there a direct store like HShop on the 3DS to find PS2/PS3 iso files?
I've never used a hacked 3DS so I can't compare. I wouldn't describe them as hard to use, just slightly tedious to set up to your liking. But once it is, smooth sailing.
If you’re a college football fan a jail broken PS3 is a must have
I have a modded 1tb phat bc ps3 and a modded ps3 slim that I just put that same ssd in. I compared the load times on both with the the last of us. The ssd made a huge difference.
The European PS3 60 GB launch model did had the PS2 GPU inside but not the CPU wich was emulated. It was a hybrid solution..
Yep, like our 80 GB model.
My mechanical 💾 drive from 1987 is still stable 😆
I would say try using the PS3 with the OSSC + Playstation Scart cable for the PAL Playstation 1 game.
Please do a video comparing the FAT PS3 and the PS2 running through a retrotink 5x
